Moving to Houston for 18 months — advice on living costs, neighborhoods and jobs?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!😁

My husband has been offered an 18-month relocation to Houston, and we’re trying to decide whether to take it. We visited for a week last August, but living there is a different story!

We’re a couple with no kids, and while my husband’s benefits include health insurance and a 401(k), we’d be responsible for figuring out most of the day-to-day costs.

I’d love to hear your advice on a few things:

● Cost of living: What monthly budget should we realistically expect for two people, including rent, utilities, groceries and transportation?

● Neighborhoods: Which areas would you recommend living in? Any areas you’d avoid?

● Job opportunities: I’ve worked in accounting at an accounting firm in Italy for the past 10 years, mainly handling accounting and administrative tasks. My visa would allow me to work in the US, but I’d need to leave my current job to move. How realistic would it be to find a job in Houston with my background? Would my experience transfer well to the US job market, or would I need additional qualifications?

● Career alternatives: If finding an accounting job proves difficult, what other roles would be worth looking into or preparing for before moving?

We need to make a decision fairly soon, so I’d really appreciate honest advice from people who live in Houston, especially anyone who’s moved to the US from abroad.
Thanks in advance!😁

Looking for 2 tickets to the Halloween party at the Museum of Science

Hey y'all, I know it's last minute, but my partner and I just found out about the Halloween party at the Museum of Science and it's already sold out. Does anyone have a way to get tickets, or is anyone no longer able to go and willing to sell theirs? Happy to pay face value. Thanks!

Edit: Before I pay, all I ask is for some verification in some way! I don’t want to get scammed

Friends!

• Upvotes

Hey y’all! I’m 33, on the northwest side of Houston, and looking for a few good friends to have in my circle.

I love going to concerts and finding fun things to do around town. I’m into all kinds of music—the last concert I went to was Glass Beams! I’m always down for brunch or grabbing food somewhere, and I love museums and artsy stuff.

I’m also working on my fitness journey, so I’m trying to be more active and throw in the occasional workout class. But I’m equally good at staying in and binge-watching a show 😂 I love taking vacations whenever I can, too.

I’d love to meet some women around my age who want to build a genuine friendship, keep in touch, and actually make plans. If any of this sounds like your vibe, feel free to message me!

making friends in houston

• Upvotes

hi there.

i don’t really ever use reddit, but i feel like ive tried all the other options. (fb groups, bumble bff, literally just introducing myself to people in public)

i’m a married 27f in the cypress/katy area. i’ve been here for 2.5 years, transplant from the northeast, and the only friends ive really made are a few people i’ve met through my husband (almost entirely 30+ year old men ((who i adore but a girl needs other girls around her lol)). i’ve felt lonely since coming here, but ive found no luck making friends.

so i guess im here hoping maybe there’s someone else looking for a friend who’d like to talk and see if we vibe?

a little about me:
-i’ve recently become a giant fantasy nerd
-i love to write fiction and poetry, im currently working on my first novel
-i’m obsessed with cats
- i like literally all kinds of music
-i love to throw parties and host game nights
-i love to bake. it tastes really good, but im still working on the decorating aspect
-i love alternative fashion and really want to explore it more
-proud ally and member of the lgbtq community
-i have a really dark and dry sense of humor, but i love to laugh
-i love to go out but there’s nothing better than a good night in
-i’m that person who’s seen no movie ever, but im slowly powering through the classics (drop me recommendations, please!)
-i chronically ill, but my symptoms are currently decently managed. i’m looking for friends who aren’t going to be weird about that but also understand i physically have limitations.

i don’t really know what else to say in a post like this. i suppose if anything i said sounds like something you might want in a friend, please respond or message me privately :))

U of Houston, Meow Wolf, mall—best hotel for visiting all?

I’m bringing my daughter to tour University of Houston, and we know nothing about the city. In addition to touring the school, we want to go see Meow Wolf and also she’d love to go to a really good mall. We’ll be ubering instead of renting a car, so I’d like to keep things relatively close if possible. Can you recommend a hotel or neighborhood that would be fairly centrally located for these three attractions? (I realize I didn’t specify a mall, but I’m hoping you can help me with that too. She’s 18 and loves, loves, loves to shop. Our local malls suck, so she’d be excited to go to a newer one with a wide array of stores.)

Thanks in advance.

Apartment Questions

Hi everyone!! I’m looking into moving into my own place in March and i’m looking to be close to Galen College of Nursing since I start in person classes in March but I also don’t want to be super far away from the medical center where i work. Ive narrowed down my list to these 3 apartment buildings and was wondering if anyone had any insight on what it’s like to live at these places.
My number one pick is Heritage Lofts
My second pick is Briarwood Apartments
My third pick is Woods on Lamonte
A backup option I also have is 5401 Chimney Rock Rd

History Aficionados, wya?

I've very recently moved to Houston, and aside from devouring the delicious food, the spicy Sichuan burning my tummy, and getting lost in parking lots, I haven't really been doing much.

I really want to get into a low-key book club that focuses on world affairs non-fiction, mostly history. The recent political flurries and hopes of changes did get me excited!

So, I think I want to find and meet great people who wanna discuss history, history books, and chat about geopolitics or their favourite stories. I'm particularly passionate about mediaeval history and late antiquity, and I want to learn Texas history as well.

I'm willing to open a group as well if that helps!

Midtown, Houston Bars/Clubs

So my friends are trying to go out for halloween this saturday. We normally go out in The Heights, but we are going friday night and we want to try Midtown for actual halloween because we’ve never been.

My questions are:

Do midtown clubs/bars normally charge cover? if yes, what’s the prices for each bar/club or a range so we can be prepared.

What midtown bars/clubs are good for dancing? My friends and I really like Heights Social and BLVD Park in The Heights, so something along those lines. I’ve heard Barbarella is a good place for dancing, but we’d like more options if possible.

Will there be special cover/requirements to get into these bars because it’s halloween? Barbarella is the only bar i’ve really looked at in the area and i can’t find anything that says it’ll have a special ticket/cover for halloween.

alright that’s it! any help would be greatly appreciated!! THANK YOU! also this is my first post ever, i’m excited hehehe😝

EDIT: I forgot about Main Street being a thing! If anyone can answer these questions for Main Street instead or in addition to Midtown, that would also be so wonderful and i’ll love you forever🫰

Soap on 59?

This morning during my commute I noticed that 59 (westpark to 610 area) seemed to have some sort of sudsy stuff all over it? I couldn’t see the lane lines because of the extra reflection. Anyone else see that or know what it could be?

Halloween

Hello!
I am curious about Halloween in Houston! Halloween is my favorite time of year, I currently live in Katy, Texas ! I am thinking about going to the black lagoon pop-up at Nickle city on Friday night I will likely drive with my boyfriend and have a lowkey night! Saturday I am trying to decide if we do the Montrose bar crawl and then stop by numbers since I saw that recommendation! I’ve never actually been out in Houston before ! But I see there is also the party at the museum of natural sciences but it’s looking a little pricey and I will likely uber Saturday so I can let loose! Curious about people’s thoughts/ recommendations !!!

Any foster cat parents? Need guidance!

I applied to be a foster through BARC and Houston Humane.

I found a 5 week old kitten on Westheimer and was unable to locate an owner or colony. She's been with us for three days and is doing great but we need to find her a forever home.

I am willing to care for her until she is adopted but I want to foster her through the system because we need help in listing her so adoptees can find her, we've had no luck asking people we know.

How long can I expect it to take for my foster application to be processed and how hard is it to be accepted? I've never fostered before I just want to help this kitten find a good home asap. How hard is it to get an appointment to surrender her, I checked the BARC website and they don't have a single appointment to surrender cats!

Houston recovery nonprofits: who should we connect with?

Hi Houston! I’m Trang. We’re planning a free, alcohol-free Rally for Recovery Radiate Houston Event — an afternoon of pickleball and community, similar to our Austin event.

We’d love to partner with local recovery nonprofits to share resources and welcome their communities. The Houston date and venue are still being finalized.

Which organizations should we reach out to? Personal recommendations or introductions would be appreciated. Thank you!

My late dad's '72 GT with a Nissan swap, need a shop near Houston

My dad passed and left me his '72 GT. He had someone swap in a Nissan engine, not sure which one (pics below if anyone can ID it). It's been sitting in Pearland since 2014 when it started stalling out a lot.
Want to get it running and driving by his birthday next December. Anyone know a good shop around Houston that's worked on GTs or swaps? Also open to tips on what to check first after it's sat this long. Not a car guy so trying not to get ripped off. Thanks.

Girls trip Houston

No car, 4 women meeting in Houston because it’s central to where we’re all from but have never been there. We’re staying at the JW Marriott at the Galleria. Any suggestions for excellent dining options, shopping, or spa or can’t miss places?
