U of Houston, Meow Wolf, mall—best hotel for visiting all?

I’m bringing my daughter to tour University of Houston, and we know nothing about the city. In addition to touring the school, we want to go see Meow Wolf and also she’d love to go to a really good mall. We’ll be ubering instead of renting a car, so I’d like to keep things relatively close if possible. Can you recommend a hotel or neighborhood that would be fairly centrally located for these three attractions? (I realize I didn’t specify a mall, but I’m hoping you can help me with that too. She’s 18 and loves, loves, loves to shop. Our local malls suck, so she’d be excited to go to a newer one with a wide array of stores.)

Thanks in advance.

History Aficionados, wya?

I've very recently moved to Houston, and aside from devouring the delicious food, the spicy Sichuan burning my tummy, and getting lost in parking lots, I haven't really been doing much.

I really want to get into a low-key book club that focuses on world affairs non-fiction, mostly history. The recent political flurries and hopes of changes did get me excited!

So, I think I want to find and meet great people who wanna discuss history, history books, and chat about geopolitics or their favourite stories. I'm particularly passionate about mediaeval history and late antiquity, and I want to learn Texas history as well.

I'm willing to open a group as well if that helps!

Looking for 2 tickets to the Halloween party at the Museum of Science

• Upvotes

Hey y'all, I know it's last minute, but my partner and I just found out about the Halloween party at the Museum of Science and it's already sold out. Does anyone have a way to get tickets, or is anyone no longer able to go and willing to sell theirs? Happy to pay face value. Thanks!

Soap on 59?

This morning during my commute I noticed that 59 (westpark to 610 area) seemed to have some sort of sudsy stuff all over it? I couldn’t see the lane lines because of the extra reflection. Anyone else see that or know what it could be?

Halloween

Hello!
I am curious about Halloween in Houston! Halloween is my favorite time of year, I currently live in Katy, Texas ! I am thinking about going to the black lagoon pop-up at Nickle city on Friday night I will likely drive with my boyfriend and have a lowkey night! Saturday I am trying to decide if we do the Montrose bar crawl and then stop by numbers since I saw that recommendation! I’ve never actually been out in Houston before ! But I see there is also the party at the museum of natural sciences but it’s looking a little pricey and I will likely uber Saturday so I can let loose! Curious about people’s thoughts/ recommendations !!!

Any foster cat parents? Need guidance!

I applied to be a foster through BARC and Houston Humane.

I found a 5 week old kitten on Westheimer and was unable to locate an owner or colony. She's been with us for three days and is doing great but we need to find her a forever home.

I am willing to care for her until she is adopted but I want to foster her through the system because we need help in listing her so adoptees can find her, we've had no luck asking people we know.

How long can I expect it to take for my foster application to be processed and how hard is it to be accepted? I've never fostered before I just want to help this kitten find a good home asap. How hard is it to get an appointment to surrender her, I checked the BARC website and they don't have a single appointment to surrender cats!

Any Houston carpet cleaning company that can actually get rid of old dog urine smell?

We bought a house in the Heights back in August, and with the Houston humidity hitting this week, our living room carpet suddenly smells like a damp petting zoo.

The previous owners had two old Golden Retrievers. We knew they had pets, but during our walkthrough, the place was blasted with air fresheners, so we didn't catch it. Now every time it rains or gets humid outside, this horrible sour pet odor wicks right up out of the carpet.

My 4yo daughter has mild asthma, so I am terrified of using heavy chemical sprays or having a traditional steam cleaner come in and drench the padding, I know leaving the subfloor wet in Houston heat is just asking for toxic mold.

Does anyone know a low-moisture carpet cleaning company in Houston that actually neutralizes deep pet odors and is safe for kids with asthma? We really can't afford to replace 800 sq ft of carpet right now.

Apartment Questions

Hi everyone!! I’m looking into moving into my own place in March and i’m looking to be close to Galen College of Nursing since I start in person classes in March but I also don’t want to be super far away from the medical center where i work. Ive narrowed down my list to these 3 apartment buildings and was wondering if anyone had any insight on what it’s like to live at these places.
My number one pick is Heritage Lofts
My second pick is Briarwood Apartments
My third pick is Woods on Lamonte
A backup option I also have is 5401 Chimney Rock Rd

Midtown, Houston Bars/Clubs

So my friends are trying to go out for halloween this saturday. We normally go out in The Heights, but we are going friday night and we want to try Midtown for actual halloween because we’ve never been.

My questions are:

Do midtown clubs/bars normally charge cover? if yes, what’s the prices for each bar/club or a range so we can be prepared.

What midtown bars/clubs are good for dancing? My friends and I really like Heights Social and BLVD Park in The Heights, so something along those lines. I’ve heard Barbarella is a good place for dancing, but we’d like more options if possible.

Will there be special cover/requirements to get into these bars because it’s halloween? Barbarella is the only bar i’ve really looked at in the area and i can’t find anything that says it’ll have a special ticket/cover for halloween.

alright that’s it! any help would be greatly appreciated!! THANK YOU! also this is my first post ever, i’m excited hehehe😝

EDIT: I forgot about Main Street being a thing! If anyone can answer these questions for Main Street instead or in addition to Midtown, that would also be so wonderful and i’ll love you forever🫰

Houston recovery nonprofits: who should we connect with?

Hi Houston! I’m Trang. We’re planning a free, alcohol-free Rally for Recovery Radiate Houston Event — an afternoon of pickleball and community, similar to our Austin event.

We’d love to partner with local recovery nonprofits to share resources and welcome their communities. The Houston date and venue are still being finalized.

Which organizations should we reach out to? Personal recommendations or introductions would be appreciated. Thank you!

My dad passed and left me his '72 GT. He had someone swap in a Nissan engine, not sure which one (pics below if anyone can ID it). It's been sitting in Pearland since 2014 when it started stalling out a lot.
Want to get it running and driving by his birthday next December. Anyone know a good shop around Houston that's worked on GTs or swaps? Also open to tips on what to check first after it's sat this long. Not a car guy so trying not to get ripped off. Thanks.

Girls trip Houston

No car, 4 women meeting in Houston because it’s central to where we’re all from but have never been there. We’re staying at the JW Marriott at the Galleria. Any suggestions for excellent dining options, shopping, or spa or can’t miss places?

Apartment search help (west of the beltway)

I need access to METRO bus routes 161 or 162, so I've been concentrating on apartments on Memorial Dr and Wilcrest Dr (or somewhat close to those main roads). But I haven't loved what I've seen so far.

Budget is max $1k for base rent. I know this isn't going to get me much. I don't need much. I just need somewhere I won't be massively regretting soon after moving into. This low of a budget also means that the apartment locators I've reached out to won't help me because their minimum is $1.2k.

I've toured:

  • Latitude 2976
  • Brighton Oaks
  • Gracie Square --> this is my top choice at the moment, but there's some weirdness with their apt listings not matching what they told me in person, so I'm expanding my search

I'm considering looking at:

  • 9900 on Memorial
  • Estates at Westchase
  • Briar Court Apartments
  • Park Terrace Apartments
  • 600 Nottingham
  • Warwick at Westchase

If any of these are "RUN IMMEDIATELY" places, do let me know. If you or someone you know lived at one of these places and the experience was "mostly bearable" also let me know because I'm so down for "mostly bearable".

And of course, if there's any I've not listed that you recommend, I'll love to hear about it!

Is it just me, or is anyone else noticing these massive run clubs more frequently at Memorial Park?

The last few times I’ve been, I’ve had to avoid these fast packs of 15-20 runners taking up the entire path and generally just being rude. Anyone else nothing more of this lately?

Haven't been to either, so I'm asking about the vibe, music, and any other tips.

Looking to possibly go on Halloween to check out the costumes and people.

Thanks folks

Can I get into bars downtown with most of my face covered for Halloween ?

Basically as the title states… I wanted to dress as the silent hill nurse which would have most of my face covered by surgical gauze. The way the makeup would be done is I can’t remove it once it’s on. I did want to keep my eyes and mouth mostly uncovered so I can see/ drink, but I totally forgot I’d have to give my ID to get in…. This might be a stupid question but I just want to see if anyone else has tried and have been successful.
