New here! Needs advice on setting up 86Box on a MacBook Pro (Retina, Early 2015)
Hi everyone, I'm new here!
I'm getting into retro virtualization and emulation. I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro (Retina, Early 2015, Model A1502 - Intel Mac).
Previously, I used Boot Camp with Windows 10, but I rarely used it because rebooting back and forth from macOS was annoying. So, I decided to switch to virtual machines.
Currently, I'm using VMware Fusion and running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 7. For the most part, Windows 98, 2000, and XP run ridiculously fast and smooth. However, I'm running into a few specific issues:
- Game Compatibility (Beach Head 2002): In Windows 2000, Beach Head 2002 won't launch at all. In Windows XP, it runs, but it's extremely slow and laggy. (Note: I also run Win 7 in Classic theme to play a fan-made Pokémon game and a billiards game that wouldn't launch on XP).
After browsing around retro pcs posts, I saw a lot of people recommending 86Box. Since my Mac uses an Intel CPU, UTM isn't really an option for me. I downloaded 86Box, but I'm completely lost on how to use it or configure it properly.
My questions for the community:
- If I move to 86Box, what hardware config, ROMs, graphics card drivers, and settings should I use so it runs as fast as possible in Win95/98/3.11/NT/ME/2000/XP/Vista/7 for use normally and games?
- Why is Beach Head 2002 performing so poorly or failing on Win2k/XP virtual machines, and is there a specific display driver, Glide wrapper (like dgVoodoo2), or setting I need to fix DirectX/3D acceleration?
Any advice, driver recommendations, or setup guides would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
