Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Which village is this? (Austria)

I am looking to find out what this village is called. I bought this handpainted little painting. It is quite old. I have not dated it yet but looks at least 50years old. My guess would be older. I bought it in Austria/styria/Graz. It is likely Austria and presumably Styria. These churches are typical for around here. Could also be Slovenia though or something else close to modern day Styria.

Any help would be grately appreciated!

Open Trying to find motel in Arizona or New Mexico from my childhood.

There was a motel my family stayed at when I was a kid (probably 25 year ago) that has haunted my memory. I’m curious if it’s still there, but I have no clue where exactly it was.

We were traveling from California to Tucumcari, New Mexico so I know it was either in Arizona or New Mexico.

It was a very stereotypical single story run down old motel (I feel like it was green, but I could be wrong). The stand out thing I remember about it was that it had a playground out front, but it was an old metal playground. I think it was just a metal slide and a metal merry go round.

Does anyone have any idea where this might be?

Solved Help finding where this photo was taken

Post image

Hello people of Reddit. I've tried multiple ways of figuring out where this photo was taken and I can't seem to find it. The couple is my maternal grandparents and the photo was likely taken in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The were residents of North Carolina and I assume this was taken in the eastern US but I don't know that for sure. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

I found an old undeveloped 35mm film roll from an old camera I had laying around. I bought the camera a while ago in a yard sale, and I had no idea that had a roll inside. I developed it out of curiosity and only two of them came out good enough. I think the school is in southern Spain ( Torrepacheco, Murcia Spain) but I might be wrong. The camera is from the mid 80s, thanks in advance :)

I bought an old film camera from a thrift store 2-3 months ago. Inside was a roll of Kodak 400TX that was partially shot. I developed the roll last night and was surprised to find photos of Japan.

u/Umibozu_CH from r/japanpics ID’d a few of these as Okayama, Korakuen Gardens. Does anyone have more info on these photos?

Where in LA were these photos taken?

I’m going to LA this weekend, and I was hoping to take photos in this exact same spot. The subjects in the photos are the Japanese girl group f5ve, and they were promoting their concert in LA at the time, so I’m 90% sure these photos were taken in a rooftop somewhere in LA.

I took this Google Earth screenshot for the first time in 2018 while exploring a random place. I saved it as “N Lincoln Street,” but now that I want to explore it again, I can't find it anywhere. It might be somewhere near Seattle or on one of the islands there. It looks like a river, and there's a railroad bridge. I'm not sure :(

Solved Pretty sure this is England somewhere, late 1980's or early 90's. I think my grandma was about 50 here.

Open Where in Newfoundland was my Grandfather hunting

Post image

My grandfather was an avid moose hunter and every year he’d make a trip to western Newfoundland to go hunting. He passed away 9 years ago today and I was looking through old pictures and found this. I was hoping someone may be able to help me find the location this picture was taken. I’d love to go there someday.

"UCR" letters in Santiago, Chile

I was playing geoguessr about a year ago and was put in this location in Santiago, Chile with visible freestanding letters that said "UCR" (I think it was yellow/blue but not sure). It was amusing to me because it was easily confusable with UC Riverside and I would like to re-find this location.

I do not remember the specific location but I remember it was next to an intersection in a fairly busy area. The unique characteristic was the "UCR" giant letters, though I havent been able to find anything related to "UCR" in Santiago (im 99% sure it was in Santiago but it couldve been in a suburb?)

Solved I'm looking for the building which is on or near Fő utca, Kaposvár, Hungary

This 1992 photograph was taken within easy walking distance of the Rippl-Rónai Museum (located on Fő utca, Kaposvár, Hungary). Despite searching Google Street View, I have been unable to locate the exact building. I'm looking for the building out of curiosity and for sentimental reasons. Thank you.

Solved Where was my grandfather in this photo?

Post image
33 Upvotes

I found an old photo of my grandfather in my grandmothers photo album, I’m pretty sure it’s from WW2 since it matches the Nazi uniforms from that time.

I would be interested to know where this was. I thought of Vienna but I am not sure what building this could be?

I never met him, just know that he somehow survived being stationed/fighting in Russia in the end. I know he was also in France for a while. I also know he never talked about the war and that he died when my father was 18.

Solved Where is this? I know it's 100% in England, possibly Mid/South England between 2000-2010! Thanks.

Hi all! These are images of me from when I was a really young child, so between 2000 to 2010 for sure. My parents are old as heck and can't remember where this exact location is, but we know it's obviously England for sure as none of us have been outside of England nor the UK for that matter. They think it's somewhere in Mid/South England, and I've never been to North England as far as my memory goes. I'm in my late 20s now and really into photography, and would love to revisit this place with them and take some more photos to recreate them before it's too late... If the place even exists anymore! Thank you so much if some magic person here knows where these photos were taken exactly. The person in the photos is me, of course.

Thank you so much!

“Made in Zhanreda”?

Post image
9 Upvotes

My friend has a pair of fingerless gloves from the early 2000’s that she’s started wearing again. She grew up in Malta (if that’s relevant?).

I noticed the buttons on these gloves say they’re “Made in Zhanreda”, but there are no results on Google when I search!

Am I missing something obvious? Where is Zhanreda?
