Hello everyone. First of all, thanks to all of you for making this sub what it is today. This community literally IS the subreddit and how we go about not just identifying locations but also interacting with each other here is a reflection of that. For a community of this size, the mods honestly have very little 'crowd control' to worry about in the comments.
I do want to bring to everyone's attention to a recent change in the subreddit rules. We've been seeing a big increase in what we're calling 'low-effort' posts - basically just a picture and a subject line with very little information provided about the image. In some cases, the location is pretty obvious or could be determined with a simple google search. These posts don't really add anything to the community, so Rule #1 now covers Low-Effort Posts as described.
Thanks again, all. Hope this updates helps keep our subreddit full of high quality content for everyone.
I am looking to find out what this village is called. I bought this little painting. It is quite old. I have not dated it yet but looks like it is from 1920 or older.
I bought it in Austria.
It is very likely Austria and presumably Styria. These churches are typical for around here. Could also be Slovenia though or something else close to modern day Styria.
I want to find out more about the painting and figure out where it was done.🧡
The exterior shot of the church has been successfully identified as the Église Saint-Pierre in the village of Maizieres, south of Caen, however that church is not the same as the one filmed from the interior, since the architectural layouts don't match up.
Shortly before the scene there is a shot of a roadsign and in the archived text version the villages of Avranches and Vire in Northern France are mentioned shortly before the scene with the organ, meaning the propaganda film crew were moving around the area of Normandy shooting propaganda footage around July 1st 1944. The episode itself is dated to July 13th 1944.
It is worth noting that because this is reel made for propaganda, the story presented may be faked, and random footage may have been jumbled up to fabricate the story in the reel. The interior of the church may also have been recorded someplace else outside the area it is presented to be filmed in under for the production of this propaganda reel.
There is also a possibility that the church may have been demolished after the war like with many other damaged churches.
If anyone knows anything about this mystery please let me know!

WW2 photo taken by my great-grandfather. He was stationed on Crimea / near the Black Sea for a while. Does anyone have an idea where and more importantly who this might be?
I know nothing about Wehrmacht uniforms, but these guys look important.
Alternatively it could also be France but that's much less likely.
Photos taken in August 1998 in Ireland, driving from Galway to Cork, along the coast. I'd like to identify exact beaches (probably not the same beach in the two pictures, but not sure). Thank you!
I’ve been trying to identify which street this photo was taken on in central Athens in 1987 but with no luck - please help!
My partner took it on her travels and remembers it being close to Monastiraki.
AI (which I’ve used to sharpen the image) says it’s close to the Central Market but comes up with a different street suggestion every time I ask and none has been right so far.
The signs are almost but not quite useful - the one on the bottom right says tourist travel, the one on the left says warehouse, and I think in the distant left one says gyros.
Any help would be appreciated - so far this sub has helped us to identify her 1987 travel locations in Piraeus and Malgrat de Mar so here’s hoping!
I was watching the music video for No Excuses and right at the beginning there's this bridge scene at the beginning with a man running across it and I got to thinking, where was this filmed? Going off of the catenary lines (more shown in the 2nd photo) and the silhouettes of PRR position light signals it has to be on the Northeast Corridor and some evidence suggests its Dock Bridge in Newark, New Jersey but I figured I'd let others weigh in if they know more.
Attention Michigan GeoGuessr experts! I would love to figure out the location of this photo.
It was on I-75, potentially a rest area, heading North. My family was on a road trip departing from Michigan State University (East Lansing) to Kitch-iti-kipi in Upper Penninsula in July 1993. Yup, that little one was me.
Now I have returned to Michigan as a proud resident, I would very much like to revisit where my parents took me. I literally could not remember and neither could they...
