North America Sharpie or Coop?

Thumbnail

Stanislaus County, California

I think it's Cooper's, but Merlin is giving me Sharp-Shinned on all three photos, except when I tweaked the contrast in the last photo.

I've seen Cooper's plenty of times in the area, but this would be my first sharp-shinned.

So, experts... what do you think?

North America East Tennesee bird call I've never heard before

• Upvotes

It was a raspy scratchy noise then a clear two note bell like call, kind of like "yura" or "eu-ah". I could not see the bird, but it was definitely the same bird making both noises. Thank you so much in advance for trying to guess based on my terrible description 🫠

Is this just a juvenile? It has a short tail and odd scaling on the back of the neck.

From Smithfield, NC, they are believed to be about 4-5 months old. We were told they were Toulouse siblings, but I am not convinced. Maybe hybrid? At least one started laying eggs this week (both seem to be nesting), we have gotten 3 eggs so far.

Saw these in Mindo, Ecuador as a storm set in. Are these a type of nightjar? Looked at Merlin and some bird guides and got overwhelmed by the number of those here. There were probably 50-100 individuals but all we had was phone cameras and I can’t attach video.

Thanks!

I’m sorry for the poor angle of the bird. These were the only pictures I could get before it flew off.

I am just looking for confirmation of ID on these birds. Seen in the Skagit Valley, western Washington, back in Feb 2026. The patterning down the back/tail, orangy-yellow legs and bi-colored bill plus bill length are the markers used for ID; if wrong, would love tips on differentiating further!

North America Large chickadee/chipmunk hybrid?

Post image

Sorry for the blurry photo. This bird was flying around my pond and kind of sounded like an angry chipmunk. It's the size of a blue jay but looks like a huge black-capped chickadee (obviously I know it isn't). I've never seen one like it before so does anyone know what it is?
