Weekly r/Birding Discussion, October 24, 2026. What did you see this week?
Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.
Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

Social Media Some brave soul decided to report an albatross in Montana.
I didnt think they live out here, but I guess there might be a few living in the Unicorn preserve just outside of town.

Fun Fact A Scientific study found that birds fear women more than men. Source: Morelli et al. (2026) People and Nature.
An international study involving several universities and research institutions, led by Italian researcher Federico Morelli from the University of Turin, investigated this phenomenon.
The researchers conducted the study in five European countries: the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Poland, and Spain. They observed 37 bird species and found that all of them fled sooner when approached by a woman than by a man.
The researchers could not find a clear explanation for this phenomenon.
The findings were published in the journal People and Nature.

Discussion My little catbird
This cutie showed up a few weeks ago and was learning to fly. I think he got blown out of the nest during a storm. His mama stuck around and was bringing him berries. He had a feather sticking straight out of his wing and now it grew back white and heβs able to fly. My question is why is he so small? Runt or dwarfism? I think heβs adorable and praying heβs able to make it through the coming winter. π₯Ή

π· Photo Ruby-crowned kinglet
(My original photo) Here's a ruby-crowned kinglet, a tiny bird capable of perching on the thinnest of twigs. It's taking a rare break here between pinging around the bushes like it just downed a six-pack of Monster energy drinks. Seen in Prospect Park, Brooklyn NY USA.
