Commute Could I get a sense check on an altercation I had this morning? Are drivers as bad as I think they are?
So on my commute into work just now I was coming down this narrow two way street in Glasgow and reached this junction:

I was turning right out of Miller street onto Ingram street so took a position on the right hand side/centre of the left hand side of the road. There was loads of traffic coming down Ingram street from the left so I had to wait there a while. As it cleared and I started my turn a car came up directly next to me on my right and also starts turning right. He was maybe 30 cm away from me. As you can see there are not two lanes going in that direction down Ingram street and I am turning so I motion at the driver to stop as he is undertaking my turn when we are both going the same direction.
We reach the red light a little down the road and he starts screaming at me asking what's my problem and I say he was undertaking me on a turn. He says he had plenty of room and I should pull into the taxi rank area which I think he thinks is a cycle lane. He also says he had no way of knowing I wasn't going straight so he thought he was overtaking. He then angrily ran the red light and rapidly accelerated to maybe 50MPH. He was maybe in his early 70s so likely old enough to know better.
What had me questioning is when we were arguing some guy on the pavement came and defended the driver saying he can pull through the junction at the same time as long as there is plenty of room even if we are going to the same lane. Said he had been driving for 20 years.
Surely this is insane right? Proper driving would be to wait for the vehicle in front of you to make their turn (me) and then approach the stop line and make your turn separately when clear. Even if that taxi rank had been a cycle lane you would wait until the vehicle in front had made the turn and not drive next to them in a junction.
Am I fundamentally misunderstanding how to navigate junctions or is the standard of driving so poor that two drivers independently could think that undertaking a cyclist at a junction is OK?
