News [Jon Krawczynski] So here's what I have: - Ant was feeling really good after resting his knees in the summer. - Camp went well. Then he tweaked it in Miami. MRI revealed need for a cleanup. - Doing it now gets him back likely in Jan. He believes Wolves can contend for the title when he returns.

[Jon Krawczynski] Anthony Edwards' biz mgr, Justin Holland, to @TheAthletic: "It’s not about individual accolades, All-NBAs or anything like that. It’s a single focus — winning a championship. We’ve seen in a short time what this team is capable of, and know big things are ahead when all are 100%"

[Seehafer] Very likely a partial meniscectomy, where some of the meniscus is removed. Median time to return is approximately 9 weeks.

Continued: “Meniscus injuries can often be treated without the need for surgery. Edwards mentioned resting for two months following the season, which is generally enough time to determine if the injury is responding to rehab. Unfortunately, as we see, it doesn't preclude the injury from re-emerging.

For some people (and many NBA athletes) the symptoms don't recur. For Edwards it did. Easy to second guess why surgery wasn't done sooner, but it likely wasn't indicated because his knee responded adequately to rehab alone. The decision to do it now is likely based on the fact it is early.

If it were March, it wouldn't surprise me if the decision would have been to let Edwards play through it. But with only four games down, the calculus is different. Get it done now so he can be clicking on all cylinders come the playoffs.”

Joan Beringer last night showed me intangibles that could make him better than Rudy in the future

While I believe Rudy is still the way better player at this point it’s entirely possible that Joan will one day be better than him all time

Joan is more athletic than rudy, more quick than rudy, has way better hands on offense and is improving quite well on defense too

If Joan Beringer can become even 80% the defender rudy is he can be a regular All Star and All Defensive player

News [Jon Krawczynski] Anthony Edwards will have surgery on Thursday, after which there will be a better idea on the timeline for recovery, I'm told. As of now, the belief is it's going to be more than two months.

Ant's knee injury exposes the absurd 65-game eligibility rule

Post image
124 Upvotes

The news today that Anthony Edwards is going to require arthroscopic knee surgery - sidelining him for "up to 2 months" - carries a mind-blowing subtext that goes beyond any Western Conference standings: before Halloween has even arrived, his postseason award eligibility is essentially dead on arrival. This means MVP, All-NBA teams, and most importantly (for him), his supermax extension eligibility for this upcoming offseason.

This NBA/CBA rule enforces a strict minimum of 65 games played with at least 20 minutes logged (with a 2-game 15 -19 minute allowance and a season-ending injury exception) to be eligible for end-of-season awards. The idea was to curb "load management" so healthy stars consistently play in regular season games, rewarding fans, broadcast partners, and ticket buyers. A noble idea, but put into practice, it's an unfair proposition. Ant's recent injury is a perfect example and here's why:

Ant would have to return on Dec. 1 vs. Portland, play that night, and then play all 61 remaining games without missing a single back-to-back, twisting an ankle, or getting sick. Yet when he plays, like almost all superstars in the NBA, he logs around 36 minutes a night. So the rule isn't really targeting "load management"; it's an attendance contest that treats a superstar loading 36 minutes a night the exact same as a reserve barely clocking 20. Worst of all, if a blowout allows a coach to pull a star after an explosive 2.5 quarters, or they have a minor injury mid-game, an arbitrary per game minute floor risks wasting the appearance entirely, thereby punishing a player for dominating early.

The NBA needs to scrap this rigid 65 game mandate entirely and replace it with a 50% + 1 minute threshold: 1,969 total minutes across an 82-game regular season. Instead of letting blowout rest or mid-game injuries erase eligibility, a cumulative minutes pool ties awards directly to on-court labor.

Here's the math: A 30 minute starter clears the bar in 66 games, while a superstar carrying 36 minutes a night reaches it in just 55 games, providing a realistic 27 game cushion to recover from legitimate injuries like Ant's knee surgery. Fifty-five nights of elite, heavy minute basketball carries far more regular season value than a player clocking in for 20 minutes across 65 games.

Superstars like Ant shouldn't lose an All-NBA legacy (and the extra millions that come with it) to a calendar quota when their real value is measured on the court, minute by minute!

General Discussion It's TSJ time with Ant out!!!

I know Ayo deserves to be starting now but I really do like him in the 6th man role. Starting TSJ leaves everyone in their same role so nothing really changes when Ant is back.

News [Krawczynski] The Wolves are bringing back Enrique Freeman on a 2-way contract, per source. They had one open 2-way, looked at several options. Freeman is well-liked and has familiarity with the system. He will begin in Iowa.

Hopeful Jaden All-Star season loading

It definitely sucks that Ant is going to miss a bunch of time, but this is now the eve of the Jaden McDaniels all star breakout season. We got first option Jaden 30 bombs from here on out. Don’t lose hope, this could be the start of some incredible development for some of our other guys.

This is the perfect time to go get his surgery. He'll be back with plenty of time to ramp up for the playoffs and right now the schedule is going to be pretty light.

Stats Rudy Gobert is the 14th player in NBA history — and just the 4th since 2000 — to have 20+ rebounds in a game without making a field goal

Hopeful Wolves are still a good team

The LaMelo trade and Kuminga signing I think still insulates us from plummeting out of playoff contention. We have a good starting 5 still and can hold our head above water for the next couple months. I still think with the defense combined with LaMelo Ball being the offensive engine and Shannon taking that bench playmaking role, it could actually be a very good team still.

Oh, and Jaden all star? 👀

It ultimately could be a silver lining that it happened this early, and Ant could be super fresh for the playoffs. I think they just need to go .500 over the next 25 games for them to still be a solid playoff lock this year.

Only question is. How bad is an arthroscopic procedure for the long term health of the knee? That is tbd.

Oh and btw. With Ant not getting an all nba this year, he still can’t sign a supermax next summer. It’s possible the wolves can save money if he fails to make all nba this year and next year. He would then have to sign a shorter two year, less lucrative extension. Just something to keep in mind.

Bring Ya Ass Elite teams lose a lot.

I know we expected this team to go 82-0, but this is your friendly reminder that even an ELITE season by NBA standards, which is 60 wins, comes with a whopping 22 losses.

It will be OK. Rudy will be OK. We will all be OK.

LaMelo has no other choice but to stay healthy now

If he can replicate what he did in Charlotte during that January - April run where they went 33–16 then I’ll be satisfied. This time he has a better roster around him but this time he’s in the western conference which will be difficult to overcome considering the teams they will be facing during the 2 months Anthony Edwards will be out but let’s hope for the best.

In the 2024 season, Karl-Anthony Towns missed 18 games with an unexpected knee surgery

The Timberwolves went 12-6.

This sucks, but the team has been here before. I remember how doom and gloom this sub was when the KAT news was announced, but the rest of the guys stepped up and helped keep the team afloat. Naz Reid cemented his 6MOTY status by filling in during this time.

We don’t have Naz anymore, but SG is the deepest position group on this team. Ayo, TJ, and Bones are ready. We also have guys like Clark and Williams available.

Losing Ant for a couple months is a massive blow, but we’re uniquely suited to survive losing a top 5 player.

Fuck it, we ball.

Jingles was the wind beneath our wings for the last few seasons, and now we have Rocco out there in street clothes elevating the vibe game after game. Highest +/- of any player with zero minutes. We've got a formula and we're sticking to it.

Daily Discussion Free throws

If the wolves make their free throws last night they win the game, they are averaging a league worst 60.7% from the throw line and shot 14 of 23 from the line last night. I 100% agree with all the posts talking about how we often don’t get the greatest whistle when Ant is getting hacked every time he drives the ball but it doesn’t matter if we don’t start making them. I’m also willing to live with our whistle if it goes both ways (which admittedly it often does not). All things considered if free throw percentage is one of our biggest issues so far in the season I’m ecstatic, just something I’ve noticed trending negatively and potentially cost us the game yesterday.
