Mystery bugs in old barn wood

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Last year I got some barn beams from a demolished barn that was built in the 1800s for a woodworking project. When pulling some of them off the shelf for use, I noticed that they had some different bugs crawling around, and when I started cutting the wood, there were bore holes through the center of the wood. The attached picture is one of the kinds of bugs I saw. Is this bug what caused it? And if so, can I get rid of them in any way to prevent the wood from getting destroyed further? Location is Ohio, and these beams are currently sitting on a shelf in my garage.

Mouse, rat, pack rat, squirrel, or something else? It's in a section of the attic where one roof line meets another, I can't access it.

The ring around the hole is dirt, I touched it and it just flakes away. It's not water damaged at all.

Mice and/or rats in sheep shed

Hello! Hoping resident adviser and Lord’s Disciple, PCDuranet, sees this. I have sheep. They have a run-in shelter/shed. I’ve noticed golfball sized holes around perimeter and corners. I’ve seen rodent activity. Quick movement, mice droppings, some droppings that may seem larger than standard mouse droppings 🫠🤮 one grain bag had a hole chewed into it…

Obviously they are going to find food sources. I have since moved the bags and put them inside a bin. I know some people might think, who cares? It’s outside. Rodents and snakes are just my bugaboo. I jump and scream like a little girl. Freak me out 🤷🏻‍♂️ always have. Make me squeamish. Some people it’s blood. Some people it’s thrown. Rodents and snakes for me. And they are usually in the same area haha…I digress.

How can I safely eradicate without doing harm to my sheep?

Thank you for the help.

Help!! There are thousands  of them swarming in my backyard, patio, lawn, side yard & front yard. They are very small. Enlarging the pictures I took it looks like they have a pin dot size black body, clear wings, and a yellowish-orange area on their bodies. When they fly around in the air, they look white.

When I walk outside they swarm around me and land on me, my face, hair, skin, clothing.  They do not appear to bite. Most active in the afternoon sun between 1 and 6 PM. I walk outside and they land on me everywhere!

Only appear around this time of year. For a few weeks. I need to know what they are so I can do something about getting rid of them next year. I can’t go outside or enjoy my backyard for a few weeks while they are here. They were here last year as well.

Do those Nixo plug-in things really work?

Hello everyone. I keep getting ads on Facebook for these Nixo plug-ins that emit various signals and (supposedly) are effective at repelling rodents. Do these actually work? I'm skeptical. Is there ANY kind of plug-in that reliably keeps them out?

I live in an apartment. Between late September and mid-October, I caught fifteen mice in my apartment. Yes, we keep it clean and we don't leave food out. Anyway, prior to today (when I found a dead one in a trap that I had forgotten about), I hadn't seen or caught any in almost 3 weeks. About two weeks ago, an exterminator came out and found the hole in my kitchen they had been using to get in. But evidently they're coming back. I don't want to have to keep calling back the exterminator.

Is there a plug-in that works? I don't care about the cost.

Cockroach disappeared behind my bed frame

Wanted to vent. Just as I was about to sleep, I heard one of those little bastards right next to my ear on my bed post. I tried to flick it, but it just vanished, I assume somewhere behind my bed. It's 11pm and and I can't sleep knowing these shitheads are lurking around.

Advice needed - rats in floor / wall cavity

We bought a ground-floor terraced flat in SW London, with a kitchen extension, and have been dealing with what we believe is a rat problem.

Initially, we could hear scratching and movement in the ceiling void above the kitchen, particularly overnight. We had a pest-control company out three times. They identified a hole in our neighbour's garden (boundary wall) and since filling it in around a month ago we haven't heard anything in the kitchen ceiling cavity.

However, we're now hearing scratching / gnawing either underneath the floorboards or inside a cavity wall, so clearly they are getting in elsewhere!

Before purchasing the property, we had a CCTV drainage survey carried out. It identified cracked and displaced joints in the drains, as well as water ingress at one point. They recommended drain relining, but we didn't proceed at the time because we weren't sure how urgent the work was.

Given the ongoing rat issue, we're now wondering whether the defective drains could be the root of the issue.

I'd really appreciate advice on the following:

  1. If we already know the drains have cracked and displaced joints, is it worth getting them repaired specifically to address the rat problem? Or could the rats be entering through a completely unrelated route?
  2. Is there a particular type of pest-control specialist who understands drainage-related rat ingress and can investigate the route from the drains into the building?
  3. Has anyone had rats travel through floor voids or cavity walls because of defective drains, and managed to resolve it permanently?

We're keen to fix the underlying problem rather than keep paying for pest-control visits without knowing where they're getting in. We also have an indoor cat, so need to be careful about any treatment used.

Thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations, particularly for specialists in London/South West London.

Bats in Attic

I’m going to expose what I find my somewhat embarrassing situation I’m currently in. I bought my first home last year. It was a total flip. Inspection went okay with some issues that were fixed by owner. Well since I’ve moved in, I’ve had all sorts of pest control problems. Different critters getting into my dirt basement and bugs in general. Partially concerning is I’ve spotted about 3 roaches during my time here. Have a local pest control company coming to do routine treatments, but spotted another one last weekend so thought it may be time to look into exclusion work as well. I called Orkin and he checked out the basement then the attic as well. Least of concerns I thought but I’m guess I’m glad he did cause apparently I have bats too and a ton of droppings according to him. He says the only fix is to fully re-insulate the attic as everything is contaminated now. The quote for that was 11k. I need advice and opinions. Does that quote seem high? Do I truly need to fully re-insulate my attic?

Unanswered Ants: silly question about infestation?

I thought I took care of this problem several times but I saw 3 scouts in my ottoman tonight and I don’t even know if they are only scouts.

I set out 3 of the plastic raid traps because i’m out of terro. 2 next to each other between my bed and the ottoman and one in the far corner of my room under my desk, sort of in the same vicinity.

It has been hours with zero activity at any of them. Only just now I am seeing 1-2 ants going in/out of a singular trap.

Just wondering does this indicate a smaller of an infestation/problem? Or is it possible to even tell from this?

That’s basically my question

Help! Dont know what to do. My girlfriend's building has had a German cockroach infestation since May. The condo management denied the problem for months.

It all started at the end of May, when I saw a German cockroach in our apartment. Shortly after, a neighbour told us she had seen a cockroach on the floor below, at the opposite end of the building. We notified the condo management, who refused to step in, saying it was "each apartment's own problem".

As a precaution, we had a preventive pest treatment done by a professional company, paid for by the landlady, and for a few months we didn't see any more. In October one showed up at home, acting strangely: it didn't run from the light and stayed still on a door frame, out in the open and in the light. I couldn't see well enough to tell whether it was a German or a sewer cockroach.

For weeks, maybe even months, the condo management kept saying they weren't cockroaches, just "other little bugs" coming in from outside. They never admitted the problem, but they eventually called a pest control company for the common areas. According to that company's report, there's a \*\*high\*\* population of German cockroaches and a \*\*medium\*\* population of Oriental cockroaches.

We suspect the main source is an empty apartment on the 7th floor. The apartment right below it, on the 6th floor, is completely infested. They even crawl through the window and balcony. We suspect several apartments from the 7th down to the 4th floor on the left side of the building are infested too (we're on the right side). The technician said the condo asked for them to apply treatment on her flat, because she never stopped complaining, but my gf says its looks way less then what they did in our appartment.

Even so, the condo management refuses to coordinate treatment of the apartments. Some residents are going to pay for pest treatment themselves (or they say they will) but many others are ignoring the problem. So nothing gets solved, because the cockroaches just move to another apartment and come back.

Honestly, I don't know what to do anymore. I've warned the condo management, the public health authority and the city council. No one gives a damn, and nobody seems to understand how serious this is. It's only going to get worse.

I haven't lived there since May, because I started a new job in a different area. My girlfriend is moving out at the end of November, but I'm worried she might accidentally take some cockroaches with her during the move, to her new place or even to her parents' house. For now her house does not look severe infected since there aren't any sightings since 15 days that one with wierd behaviour he had some previous glue traps with bait but now we are going to put new ones, those old might not be trustable.

\*\*TL;DR:\*\* My girlfriend's building has had a German cockroach infestation since May. The condo management denied the problem for months, but the report from the pest control company they hired confirms a high population. They still refuse to treat the apartments. Some residents are treating their own units, others are ignoring it, and the cockroaches keep spreading. I've warned the condo, the public health authority and the city council, and no one is doing anything.

Bug droppings?

Having the shower redone in our 1985 home. Never opened these walls before. Looks like we had, or actively have a bug problem. Does anyone have any insight on what might type of infestation we have? I see some roach oothecae, and I do see some American roaches from time to time in the home, but I wasn’t sure if they alone could cause this mess. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Also want to make sure we treat everything appropriately before the walls get closed back and tiled, so any insight on that would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Is this Delta Dust or ExciteR residue? How excessive is it/should we be worried?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

One week ago, an exterminator treated our bedroom for possible bedbugs. He used Delta Dust and ExciteR.

He said he put Delta Dust along the baseboards, underneath our desk, in cracks in the brick walls, between our mattresses, and that's it. He said he used ExciteR inside our dresser drawers, behind picture frames, and in some other places (he didn't name every spot).

When we returned a few hours after the treatment, the room smelled heavily of insecticide; we aired it out as much as we could, but it still smells a bit one week later. We also noticed a new residue on objects that, weirdly, he specifically said he did NOT treat (I asked)—most clearly, a vanity mirror on the dresser and some big plastic bags in which we're keeping our clothes because of the possible bedbugs (see photo). We can't tell if it's residue from Delta Dust or from ExciteR, and we don't know how worried we should be. We are only clearly seeing it on the plastic bags and mirror, both of which are shiny/reflective, but we assume it could also be on other stuff and just be harder to see.

Separately, we're seeing white powder on some bricks and near certain baseboards, so that's got to be the Delta Dust. And there's a corner of the floor under the desk that's now covered in a white chalkiness that wasn't there before; we assume this is Delta Dust too (see photo).

We're not sure how to assess whether these residues are dangerous to us and/or our cat. Is it possible there could be Delta Dust on many surfaces throughout the room? Is it possible many surfaces are covered in ExciteR (and which is worse)? Knowing that he treated the inside of the dresser drawers with ExciteR, do we have to clean them before putting clothes back in? We don't fully trust the exterminator for several reasons, including that he kept insisting Delta Dust can't harm cats when apparently it can. Any advice would be much appreciated!!!! Thanks!

looking for some advice from professional or experience pest control for mice/rats

Hi Reddit people, I wanted to get your opinion on something. If you were dealing with a construction site that had a pretty bad mouse and rat problem, how would you go about handling it? I’m talking about keeping the garbage under control, cleaning and sanitizing the bins, pressure washing when needed, setting traps, and checking them regularly. From your experience in pest control, what would you do first, and what kind of routine would you set up to get the problem under control and keep it from coming back? I’m trying to get a better understanding of the proper steps to take and what actually works in the long run.

Smashed the mf, but I've seen this bug 3 times or 3 separate bugs of the same size and speed in the last month. I never got to kill it the first two times I saw it, both times were in my bathroom, this time it was on my living room crawling up the wall (jesus help me). I'm not sure it isn't just the same one I hope to God it is. I bought roach bait stations about two weeks ago and put them all over the bathroom and joining closet, tonight I put the rest out all over my house. I didn't want to spread the problem I didn't know if that would attract them to other rooms or not. I guess I'm asking if this is in fact a roach, and if so what kind? I'm also asking if I need to do more and when I should notify my landlord. I'm not the cleanest person but I'm not the worst either and I'm absolutely freaking the f out. I live on the second floor of a 3 apartment complex so I thought I would be relatively safe from this. It's currently 2:30 am and I'm not planning on sleeping tonight I am thoroughly freaked out. I live in West Virginia if it helps.

Unanswered Seeking insta-kill mouse traps safe for house with stupid cat

Have a house mice problem but still trying to pinpoint the location as my (indoor only) cat usually finds them first and leaves them all over the house. He is a bit stupid and doesn’t like to kill them, just wants to play so most have escaped him and I’m not sure where they went. I would appreciate advice on any mouse traps that are insta-kill without chemicals or holes my cat can stick his paw into. Specific models preferred if possible.
