Self-Promotion (Developer) NEX can now turn browser videos into 3D in real time, right on your Quest

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey, I’m one of the developers behind NEX, a video player for Quest. We’ve added Instant 3D to the built-in browser, so you can open a supported site and turn on 3D with a click. It runs directly on your Quest, with no PC or conversion beforehand.

Converting a movie can take hours, and I get why people don’t want to wait that long. That’s why I’m excited about real-time 3D. We’ve also improved Instant 3D performance since the earlier version, so if you tried it before and had frame drops, hopefully this update feels better.

I’ve been testing it mostly with music videos from a few singers I like, and I’ve been enjoying how they look. Some shots work better than others, so I wouldn’t call it perfect, but it's good to me enough as it's real-time 3D.

I’ve mostly been watching in the lake environment, where the screen’s light reflects on the water. You can use the browser in the other NEX environments too, and customize the playback controls to keep your usual settings handy.

As for which sites work: Netflix still doesn’t because of DRM. YouTube and most sites work, but compatibility varies.

Click here to try NEX for free. All features and environments are available with a daily playback limit, so you can check your usual sites before deciding whether to buy the whole version.

Hope you enjoy the update. If you have any feedback, I’d love to hear it.

[Timeline] The Last 15 years of VR

Hey friends, I'm the co-founder of Road to VR where we've been covering the VR industry now since 2011. We recently published this timeline that I think many of you that have been on this journey for a long time will find interesting.

Two things I'd love to hear about:

  1. What year did you get your first headset and which one?
  2. Do you feel like progress in VR overall has been faster or slower than you expected over the last 15 years?

We're launching FLYON on November 5 (Meta Quest), and we'd love to celebrate by giving away around 5-10 game keys!

You can fly drones, planes, helicopters and more in VR or Mixed Reality, using your own room as a flying playground. There's multiplayer too, so it'd be great to see people jumping in and flying together!

How to join?

- ✈️ Tag a friend you'd like to fly with, and you might both get a key!

- 🚁 No friends to fly with? No worries! 😂 Just drop a comment telling us what you'd like to fly!

We'll randomly pick the winners and send them their keys on launch day.

Good luck, pilots! See you in the skies! 🛩️

Hey!

I'm working with the Readality team this semester as a marketing student to share what they've been building.

Readality brings digital comics and manga into VR, letting you physically hold 3D books, flip pages naturally by hand or controller, read in any position wherever you'd like, and even read together with friends.

Try it out for free now by downloading the Alpha:

Drop your thoughts, bug reports, or feature requests either here or on our Discord so we can build this with the community.

Self-Promotion (Developer) Introducing Project VIM (VR In Motion)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Today I am ready to start showing everyone something I have been working really hard on for the past 6 months. For the longest time there had only been a few titles you could play in a Yaw motion simulator with no PC required by using a Meta Quest VR headset, but sadly all but Epic Rollercoasters have dropped that support over the years.... Also, I don't think I've ever seen a standalone game move another simulator other than a Yaw, so I set out to change that!

🚀 What is Project VIM? Project VIM is designed to deliver motion telemetry and full simulator integration right from your standalone headset, making motion cockpits more accessible and easier to jump into than ever before.

I'm in the process of working out the licensing and final pricing details, but I should be launching this for direct-to-consumer sales soon on vrgamerdude.com and possibly other platforms. I'm also interested in talking to potential investment partners who are industry connected to see how far and wide we could take this into VR Arcades, LBEs, and other pop-up VR attraction spaces by helping vendors negate the high cost of a gaming PC to run some attractions.

👇 Drop a comment below: Are you running a motion rig like the Yaw VR or DOF Reality? Which games would you want to see supported first on standalone?

💸Save $200 off the purchase of the YAW Ultimate motion simulator from Shall XR when you use code "vrgamerdude" or this link: https://shallxr.com/?ref=vrgamerdude

Very weird bug

I'll try to explain this as best I can

Games like

\-Geronimo

\-Pavlov

They both have a weird bug where I can play them no problem, but after my pc been put into sleep mode, or after a few days, the game starts up normally, but I only see black, even though I have a screen on my pc

I tried \[opening and closing SteamVR, forcing the game to open with OpenVR, going to developer mode to change displays or reset the headset, downloading SteamVR and the games again\]

None worked; however, if I fully restart my PC and then open the games, everything works well. I have noticed it's only with Unreal games

Hardware Just to be curious, has someone tried to make a standalone Rift CV1 ?

Post image

I mean like take the motherboard + battery of a Quest, it's cooling and cameras then fit them inside the shell then adapt the screens + IPD to the system ? I would really do it myself with a broken CV1 but i don't have the ressources to do it.

Edit 1 : Some people recommends me to buy a Quest 1 but the project would be more for fun than actual playing. Also what's the point of downvoting me for something random ?

Self-Promotion (Developer) Your Steam library on Quest and Pico, now with multiplayer: GamePort 0.9.1

Hey everyone,

0.9.1 is out, and the thing I'm happiest about is that multiplayer now works. I spent a lot of time on it: a game that signs in through Steam can now log in to its own online services, and lobbies work.

What I've tested so far:

  • Ancient Dungeon VR: lobbies work, and I played a game with another player.
  • Archery Pro with James: the online mode works too.
  • PAYDAY: Aces High Demo: it logs in to Epic Online Services, and I played a game with other people.

A few rare games stay blocked by a protection in their APK, like VRChat, which closes by itself after a few seconds. If you try a multiplayer game, tell me how it goes, here or on the Discord: that's how I know what works and what doesn't.

I'd especially like to know whether Forefront works on Quest or on Pico, and Gorilla Tag. Any feedback is welcome, here or on the Discord.

This version also brings:

  • A real download progress: the downloader could say 99% while a quarter of the files were missing. The progress now never goes above what is really on the device, and a time left is worked out from how the download moves.
  • Passthrough, game by game: some games use the view of the real world without saying so in their VR build, and the device then hides it (Cubism, since an update of the game). On the compatibility page of a game, a choice of automatic, on or off lets it show again. Automatic does it for the games known to need it, and the list grows as players report one.
  • Games with large data files: many big games ship their data separately, and Android limits where an app can write it. Some games stayed incomplete or didn't start, Pico in particular. GamePort now asks once for access to the files, lets the game place its own files when Android refuses, spots a game that is missing some and offers to repair it.
  • Launch arguments: the page of a game lists the ones Steam publishes for it. The ones meant for VR are preselected, but you stay in control and can change them. It can fix some problems, Quantum Void in particular.
  • The store pages now show the game's screenshots and its trailer, so you can see what it looks like before installing it.
  • A Manage games page, and screenshots and trailers in the store.
  • Guided tours of the main pages, and a Help section in the settings that explains the marks, the buttons and the options.
  • Games for adults stay hidden until you say you're an adult.
  • More precise problem reports: you pick what goes wrong from a list (several choices are possible) and can describe it in your own words. It also counts as a "doesn't work" vote for the game, and the compatibility page, in the app and on the website, shows what other players reported, kind of device by kind of device.
  • A game that was just updated no longer asks for the same update again.
  • And of course I improved compatibility with games: an Unreal game that starts from a splash screen now opens in VR, games that stuttered on a missing Meta library now run evenly, and a game's other controls are given when the runtime refuses one.

The APK is on the releases page, and it installs over the previous version and keeps your games, saves and settings. The Discord is there for help and compatibility reports. GamePort isn't made by or affiliated with Valve, Meta or Pico.
