Rant PSA about local cleaning company

Hey everyone just feeling super frustrated but also wanted to warn any potential clients / employees about a cleaning company called Cali’s.

I started working for them as a team lead back in mid September. I thought everything was legit, very nice people, everything was smooth sailing. I got my first pay check on time, it was smaller due to it being my first check. I worked the next two weeks of course and our scheduled day to be paid was October 8th. That came and went. No pay, no announcement nothing.

I’m like okay, mistakes happen, our finance guy was on vacation ok it’ll be cleared up the following business days. WRONG. Still no announcement. I finish the week but told the OWNER directly that I will not be working until I am paid. She calls me and explains the situation and it gave me some ease and she agreed I can keep my job and wait until I’m paid.

Another week goes by. We were told we’d get our pay on October 23rd. A full MONTH since our last paychecks. Came and went. No pay.

Meanwhile me and others (that I got to speak to) are all scrambling. I can’t pay rent or utilities coming up and my coworkers have children and bills too. We’re all royally fucked by this.

The morning/night I’m writing this was my final straw because a memo was put out our pay would come by Wednesday (today)….i received a deposit…a ONE DOLLAR DEPOSIT. No joke one single dollar. Then I get an email with my paystub showing I should’ve gotten $903 for just the 2 weeks not even the full week and one day I worked that would’ve been on another pay cycle by now.

To top it off along with that email I got another email saying I’m being laid off due to business conditions. I was fully removed from the app we used to communicate so I can’t even communicate with my old coworkers anymore.

So please, do not support this scam of a business. And yes I’m filing a claim against them with the department of labor because two weeks ago I began gathering my receipts of all interactions regarding this issue and bank statements of the past month.

Rant Amount of drivers looking at their phones while behind the wheel is concerning

I just wanted to warn everyone out there to please be careful while you drive. Two cars swerved into me today because they were too distracted texting/doomscrolling while driving, and I saw 3 others doing the same thing on Arlington Blvd throughout the day while I was out and about. One of them was driving a Taycan. Such an expensive vehicle to repair and insure lol.

Seriously, can't y'all get off your phones for a few minutes? Jesus Christ. No wonder insurance rates have skyrocketed.

Working at Capital one

Hello everyone, I recently accepted an offer at capital one. What's it actually like working at Capital one. I have read some many posts and opinions are so different. Some say it's a good coasting company, and some say it's just a terrible place to be at. Anyone here currently work at capital one more than 2 yy?

Meetups Don't be alone this winter! Here are places to go and make friends and even a partner

I've seen people ask where to meet people in NOVA and it shocks me how people live in such a high dense city yet go home alone to an empty apartment(no shade of course).

I moved here earlier this year and I had no idea where to go to meet people so I just went out, at first on weekends because I was kinda scared lol, to local shops and restaurants in Arlington/ballston/Clarendon/Rosslyn and here's the places where I still go to today, please note do not just go to these places and loiter please buy something small like a drink to support them as most are small businesses:

Kaldis social house - my current gf sat next to me while I was reading a book and asked me out

North side social - great seating to sit next to people and chat, on weekends most people do just that

Spider Kellys - great bar to shoot pool as people will ask to play with you and start up conversations

Onelifefitness ballston - huge gym with a lot of people, gets crowded at times but people will gladly spot or workout with you.

Trader joes Clarendon - a very busy grocery store, met some cool people here as well asking them what they will be making with the groceries they buy

Four five - kinda pricey but brings in professionals, met a guy who works as a exec at one of the nearby buildings here.

These are just a few places, I'll name many more for happy hour, parks, bars, etc. if this gets 50 up votes.

There's just so much real estate here that's flooded with high dense people just looking to hang out with people and meet others. So give these places a try!

Moving PSA for renters: Don't sign a lease at a property managed by WJD Management (they can charge you >$4,000 if you leave them a bad review, and other bangers from the lease)

Thumbnail gallery
309 Upvotes

If you don't want to read my preamble and want to skip to the juicy part, just scroll through the selected screenshots from the lease and the example of WJD Management's Yelp activity.

My wife and I just concluded a search for a new rental in NoVA, and I'm happy to report we found a great place that we're very excited about...but not before we almost signed our lives away to a ridiculous local property management company with a borderline predatory lease.

Thankfully we read the lease carefully before signing. After identifying the most outrageous items, we sent a list of eight requests to change some aspects we did not feel comfortable with. They responded with, "No," to six of the points, "Understood," to our request to use wall anchors for baby-proofing, and the one thing they approved was removing our liability for the dehumidifier (that the lease requires us to run) if it fails.

Their general dismissiveness was enough to turn us off from signing with them, but the aggressively anti-tenant nature of the lease left me feeling like they would invent ways to come after us even beyond the explicitly stated expenses and liability we would be on the hook for.

"But OP, they have 4.7 stars on Google." Dear reader, that is because if you sign this lease you AGREE TO PAY LIQUIDATED DAMAGES IF YOU MAKE DEGRADING STATEMENTS ABOUT WJD MANAGEMENT.

Truly unhinged stuff, but despite those legal threats the brave people of Yelp have still managed to rate WJD Management 2.8 stars. That is also where you can find the owner of the company nastily clapping back at people who have already had a bad enough experience to go rant about it online.

Nadia B.'s Yelp review from 2024 reads like a case study of how some of the most concerning parts of the lease could come back to haunt you in real life. The response from WJD Management's owner boiled down to victim blaming and concluded with, "Therefore, none of the events you outlined should have come as a surprise to you."

As recently as July 2026, you can find the owner snapping at someone who was not happy with how her pet request was handled by referring her to "www.realtor.com" so she can find another place to stay. Thankfully it appears that Yelper was spared from actually signing a lease with the company.

We're extremely relieved we did not end up in a relationship with WJD Management, and could not be happier to have found a different home that met all of our needs and didn't come with crushing legal liability and future financial burdens.

Here are some lowlights from the lease, with screenshots included.

- You owe them $4,375.00 if you make disparaging comments about them orally or in writing.

- They are only required to give you two hours' notice to show the property. If you fail to provide them access, that's a $500 fee and they can keep your security deposit.

- Regardless of the condition of the property, you're out of pocket for five different professional cleaning services on move-out.

- If you cash the refund check for whatever they give you back from your security deposit, you are forfeiting the right to make any further claims about anything related to your tenancy.

- If you take them to court over money they keep from your security deposit and you lose, you pay their attorney fees.

Question Local Places Frozen in Time

Hello! I’m an escapist history enthusiast who loves to go to commercial or community places that haven’t changed much or perhaps at all since they opened decades ago. For the likeminded I can recommend Tabard Inn in DC, Hornes in Port Royal, VA, Yorkshire Restaurant in Manassas VA & the west building of the National Gallery off the top of my head. Oh, there’s also Martin’s Tavern in Georgetown where JFK proposed to Jackie & Old Ebbit Grill. We have a decent amount of historic hotels of course like the Willard. And we’ve lost some good places in recent years like the Tastee 29 Diner in Fairfax. Do you have any “frozen in time” local (~within a 2 hour radius of DC) places like this you can recommend? Places that’s are actually historic, not just “in the style” like, say, Silver Diner. Even banks, post offices, libraries, etc. Thanks!

Food Non-spicy food to try before you (read: I) die

In the name of avoiding a sob story, I'll cut to the chase: I'm recently diagnosed with metastatic cancer. I'm thinking a lot about how I want to use whatever time I have left; I love food and flavors, and definitely want to experience whatever I can. That being said, as much as my tongue and my brain love spicy food, the rest of my digestive tract is no longer compatible with even mildly spicy things due to chemo (dammit). So, I am looking for suggestions on foods to try that are NOT spicy.

I live in Arlington but still have a vehicle for now. I'm an adventurous eater and enjoy trying "weird" food. No food allergies or dietary restrictions except no spicy, no alcohol, and no raw/undercooked meat. I can eat things that have a lot of spices in them as long as they are not the burning kind. Also I love fruit. Please shout out whatever dishes/restaurants, premade snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages you think should be on my bucket list! Thanks y'all :)

Meetups Any moms wanna hang out lol

I live in Ashburn and have no mom friends. All of my friends live in Arlington and are childfree.

My son turns 2 in January and is an only child, not in daycare, and I would love to socialize him (and me!).

Or if anyone has any good recs for gymnastics in the area. He loves to run and jump / not really the library kind of boy right now.

Backpack recs for everyday living?

I would like your recs for an excellent quality backpack that is large enough to carry some groceries and can also be my daily bag for errands while walking about the city.

It would ideally have a strap across the chest to support my back and have some good storage pockets for a water bottle etc.

I don’t mind spending a little more as it will last me for years if it is a good quality. I also want to get one for my kid who is carrying a load on her shoulders to work/college as a gift for Xmas.

Please share your recs as far as brands, websites or any links of your favorites—my sore back thanks you tremendously! ☺️

Weekend Winter Getaway (up to 2hrs from Leesburg)

Would like to take my wife on a weekend getaway for Christmas this year, ideally in December and somewhere that truly feels like Christmas. Cost aside, does anyone have strong recommendations for luxurious and/or romantic weekend getaways? Preferably under 2hrs drive from Leesburg.

Capitol Tours week of Nov 1

• Upvotes

I have company coming and wanted to do the US Capitol tour next week. I usually have no trouble getting timed entries (there are many available the remainder of this week). But next week there is NO availability. Because of the mid-term elections? Just wondering.
