[Rant] Please offer your seat to pregnant people on the metro

I am 6 months along and am very visibly pregnant, and every single day that I’ve commuted to work on the metro since my pregnancy has become obvious, I have stood in a crowded car while everyone seated stares at their phone. A few people have even looked up, registered my big belly, and then quickly looked back at their phones.

While I will survive my commute at this stage of pregnancy without sitting down, being pregnant is uncomfortable and it would be so nice if an able bodied person, especially one sitting in a seat reserved for people with disabilities, offered me their seat.

There will come a point when I’m further along in my pregnancy and am less able to stand for long periods, and at that point I’ll have to ask people to let me sit down. It would be so nice if people could just have an ounce of situational awareness so that we can all avoid me having to ask you to move. And for what it’s worth, you’ll look like a hero and put all the other metro riders to shame if you offer a pregnant lady your seat.

(And before anyone says they don’t want to offend a non-pregnant person who might just look pregnant by offering their seat, I promise you: 1) that ain’t me! I look very pregnant, and 2) you don’t have to explicitly reference pregnancy as the reason for your kind gesture.)

[Discussion] blind 26-year-old potentially moving to DC

Hi.

I, 26 and blind, currently live in very rural Alabama and am trying to escape my not good, to say the least, home situation. I know that DC has solid public transit and I have career hopes of getting some kind of entry-level job to start with. Once stable, I plan to go for law school, and then eventually congress.

The place where I've lived my entire life doesn't have any good jobs, much less ones that would hire a blind guy because employers see us as liabilities or problems to be managed.

My plan is to find entry-level jobs, apply under schedule-A, and finally move.

Thoughts?

DC is one of the few places across the country that I can live independently without worrying about having to rely on someone else's car or timeframe. Rural America is depressing if you can't drive yourself.

Thanks for reading my rambling LOL.

Heads-up: possible ICE activity near 5432 Connecticut Ave NW

Posting to warn neighbors: October 27, 2026, I encountered people at 5432 Connecticut Ave NW wearing vests labeled “U.S. Marshals.” The vests looked fake.

I approached them and asked what they were doing there. They identified themselves as marshals, said they were looking for a sex offender, and then left.

A few of us witnesses are concerned this may have been ICE activity. I’m sharing what I personally witnessed so neighbors are aware. Photos of the vehicles are attached.

Stay safe everyone!

[Discussion] Ira J

I know there are a lot of mixed feelings on tiktok about Ira J, but I was curious what the general consensus on here is.
If you’re unaware, Ira J is a man with around 160,000 followers on tiktok, and he frequently posts videos of himself filming random strangers on the street (usually around 14th St and Dupont) and narrating their lives. Part of me finds it amusing, but the other part of me is uncomfortable for the people who have no idea they’re being filmed and broadcasted to almost 200k people.
I’ve actually met Ira in person a couple times out and about when I recognized him and he’s very nice, but I’m still not sure how to feel about the whole filming strangers aspect, even if it’s done in a silly way.
Thoughts? Would love to hear more opinions than just tiktok comments!

[Rant] Texting and Driving is out of control

It’s shocking to look into a car and see the driver paying attention and not texting. I thought right after Covid would be the worst of it, but IMO it’s somehow gotten worse over the last year. Every single day this week I’ve seen someone almost get run over in a crosswalk right by my building and every single time the driver had a phone in their hand. One dude had his window rolled down so I said “phone down please!” And he started screaming at me and threatening to fight me — for POINTING OUT THAT HE WAS TEXTING AND DRIVING AND ALMOST HITTING SOMEONE. Like, how dare I!

Is there any possible solution to this? What should JLG’s administration do about this since Bowser doesn’t care?
I’m no fan of cops but is traffic enforcement ever going to happen here?
Are road diets even possible with a budget deficit due to congress screwing us over?

[Discussion] Council member Robert White proposes having taxpayers pay 1/3 of unpaid rents with balances <= 6K

Post image
368 Upvotes

Fresh off his recent proposal to cut traffic fines by half, council member and future member of Congress Robert White is back at it with a new proposal to make the public on the hook for unpaid rents.

First thing: I don’t want the public to be on the hook for unpaid rents. Zachary Parker (5th district member) has proposed similar funding in which the district pays unpaid rents in large apartment buildings. Why is the public funneling money to private landlords and irresponsible tenants?

Second: this creates a ridiculous incentive to not pay your rent, especially as you won’t have the blemish of an eviction or even a hearing on your record. I’d also like a 2/3 discount on my rent, that’d be sweet

This is the 2nd postcard from Europe I’ve received for this person, who as far as I know has not lived here (in Takoma) for the past 10 years or so. I feel bad they are not getting a personal message!

[Rant] DC 311

DC 311 is just about the most useless government service I've ever encountered, and I was a bureaucrat for 25+ years. The routinely close tickets without resolving them or even reading them. I ordered a trash can, paid for it, referenced the payment in the ticket and waited a month just to have someone close it for non-payment. It's just ridiculous.

[Discussion] Heard a show on WAMU at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday October 27th and I can't figure out what it was.

The show was about sleep which I obviously need at this point. But it's driving me crazy that I can't figure out how to see their schedule or find their email address for that matter. I've got some wonderful directions on how to get to their offices but no email addresses, and apparently no detailed schedule.

[Discussion] Sit or stand on the Metro?

Curious if people have a strong preference for sitting or standing on the Metro. I usually prefer standing because the seats never look particularly clean, and I can’t get past the thought of my clothes picking up whatever’s on them.

[Transportation] Metro trip planner

Post image
80 Upvotes

I want to like the new Metro website — it’s so much prettier than the old one — but good lord, it is often baffling. Trying to find out travel time from Foggy Bottom to Dupont on the train and it tells me to walk instead. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Edited to add: I guess I wasn’t clear enough that I’m mostly just baffled by the UX of the planner. I asked it for rail information and it refused to provide. But I appreciate the bus advice especially!

Submit your opinion, there or another way.

I wrote about my experience which generally has been problematic, both as a pedestrian and as a user - many of their bikes are poorly maintained.

I suggested more CaBi citibikes and citibike CaBi docking stations. Seems to work in Manhattan although they also have a subway that accesses more of their city.

If you're like me and you weren't able to get a Turnstile DC poster from the store before they sold out, and we're hoping to find one of the ones they use for street promotion, I found some! There are a bunch along Georgia avenue at the Georgia thrift shop off Quackenbos and by the defunct Tomoka coffee shop.

[Discussion] Uber wait times

What’s going on lately? 10+ minutes to find a driver, 10+ minutes for them to arrive, then they take the most nonsensical route to the destination. Why has it gotten so bad? Or is this their play to get us to get Uber One for priority access? Wont even mention to DCA surcharge…
