Discussion Films that were initially negatively received and have since been reevaluated, but you feel the initial reception was correct

Sometimes a movie that was well-received upon its release will get evaluated after a time and start becoming thought of as good (or at least not as bad as once thought). Which films where this has happened do you feel the initial, negative opinion was actually correct?

For me, the movie my mind goes straight to is Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Contrary to the movie's 31% audience score on RT, I feel like almost any discussion I've had about this movie IRL or online eventually leads to people saying that it's a good (or at least okay) movie that was judged too harshly when it was released. Having only seen it once, when I was a kid, I gave it a rewatch to see if maybe I'd been too negative, but I discovered that it was just as bad as I remembered it to be.

Question Are there any color pictures (not colorized) of the iconic costume ball gown from Rebecca?

I am referring to the big white one with flowers that gets the lead in trouble because Rebecca wore an identical dress.

I've been trying to find pictures, but they're all colorized and none of them agree on the color of the flowers. Hell, I found an image where the dress was light blue instead of white.

I would've thought it'd be in some museum collection somewhere? But it also seems like maybe the dress just kinda disappeared into the film industry and was repurposed.

Discussion Worst 2026 Movies You Saw

2026 has offered a lot of great and terrible movies. acclaimed directors with awesome films like The Oddysey and acclaimed directors with bad films like Disclosure Day. so what are your least favorite / worst 2036 movies?

Mine:

Michael - to be clear it’s a great stage show. But an awful biopic. Well directed and edited… but man it’s just greatest hits.

Supergirl - I was so excited for this movie.… so excited…. and then greatly disappointed.

Disclosure Day - a sci-fi alien flick filled with random religious imagery and a boring narrative with cringe worthy dialogue.

Moana 2026 - need I say more?

The Mandalorian & Grogu ….. need I say more?!

The End Of Oak Stteet - has a lot going for it… but man that ending might’ve been the worst. I’ve seen this year besides Supergirl.

Discussion I watched National Lampoon's Vacation and was kind of turned off by how mean spirited it is.

Clark holds John Candy's character hostage so the family can go on some rides. He's on the verge of cheating on his wife when he jumps in the pool with the woman he has be gazing at throughout the movie. He has no respect for the grandma. While the film has a few laughs, most of them are just mildly amusing. Is this one of those you had to be there when it first came out movies?

Discussion Johnny Depp as Scrooge

I just saw a commercial for "Ebenezer", Johnny Depp's upcoming "A Christmas Carol" story.

Frankly, we all know the story. I've read it several times, I've seen it several times, and except for the musical "Scrooge" and "A Muppet's Christmas Carol", I have little urge to see it again in any format with any star.

Is Johnny Depp a reason for you to go see it 'cause it ain't for me?

Discussion It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

This movie changed the way I look at life. It's a feel-good story about an average man living an average life, trying to help the people in his community overcome the cost of living. Going through betrayal, bankruptcy, disability, and crushed dreams, George, our main character, still finds a way to make the most of his life. But all those things crush him near the end, and his later realization that he shouldn't take life for granted and that everything happens for a reason is what made me fall in love with this classic. If you haven't watched this movie, give it a chance. Even if you don't like old black-and-white movies, I think you will have a great time, especially with the upcoming Christmas holidays. Life is beautiful.

Discussion Ridley Scott’s filmography can be slotted into The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. With The Dog Stars hitting digital today, where do all his 30 movies fall?

No filmmaker swings between utter cinema masterpiece and “WTF is this trash” quite like Ridley Scott. He's banged out thirty features across nearly 50 years. Some are among the best movies ever made, some are fascinating messes, and some are genuinely baffling. So I sorted every one of them into the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Good

  1. Blade Runner
  2. Alien
  3. Gladiator
  4. The Duellists
  5. Thelma & Louise
  6. The Martian
  7. American Gangster
  8. Black Hawk Down
  9. Kingdom of Heaven (director’s cut only, don’t @ me)
  10. The Last Duel
  11. Prometheus
  12. The Dog Stars
  13. The Counselor

Yes, The Duellists is that high. His debut is a lean, gorgeous, deranged little movie about two men who can’t stop trying to kill each other for 15 years, and it’s criminally underseen. If you haven't seen it - FIX THAT NOW! AndThe Counselor is a cold, nasty, McCarthy-brained weirdo of a movie that I will totally defend to this day.

The Bad
14. Matchstick Men
15. All the Money in the World
16. Alien: Covenant
17. 1492: Conquest of Paradise
18. G.I. Jane
19. Body of Lies
20. Robin Hood

Not terrible, just Ridley on autopilot: handsome, competent, but forgettable.

The Ugly
21. House of Gucci
22. Napoleon
23. Black Rain
24. Gladiator II
25. A Good Year
26. White Squall
27. Hannibal
28. Exodus: Gods and Kings
29. Someone to Watch Over Me
30. Legend

Legend looks incredible and is completely inert. Tim Curry deserved a better movie to be a giant red goat man in.

His latest, The Dog Stars got dogpiled by critics and flopped at the box office but I still thought it soared for most of its runtime before a bumpy landing, so it still sneaks into the good pile.

How would you break out his films?

Chloë Levine, an actress known for her work on shows like Netflix’s The OA and Trinkets, is set to star in Your Heart is a Hummingbird, a semi-autobiographical indie drama written and directed by former adult film actress SM Goldberger.

In Your Heart is a Hummingbird, Levine plays successful adult film star Rebekah Rosenberg — aka Bex Bacall — who upon learning of her mother’s cancer diagnosis, finds her very carefully separated worlds collide forcing her to reconcile the girl she was with the woman she’s becoming.

Discussion Movies where the actors age changes your viewing of the film.

Watching some films over the weekend made me wonder about films where the actor's age isn't meant to be critical to the role, but it still changes how you see it.

* Tenzing - William Defoe plays the real-world figure of Colonel John Hunt. Watching it, while Defoe was still a fit man, I struggled to see how an old man would be leading such a mission in the 1950s. I later learned that the real John Hunt was 42 at the time of the climb.

* Mayday - OK, now I know this is meant to be breezy nonsense, but... given the comparison the film makes with Top Gun, I was just thrown by how this near 50-year-old man was still a Lt. Nothing in the film says the character is meant to be much younger than the actor. Which means if that is the case, the character was born in WW2.

With both of the films, you are just supposed to roll with it, but I was drawn out. Any similar experiences?

Discussion First time watch of Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Just watched this film for the first time last night thinking this was the OG (don’t come at me pls) and i honestly liked it. I hopped onto Reddit for a few questions i have on the film only to find out so many ppl HATED it and that it is horribly INACCURATE to the book. So that leads me to my questions:

  1. What Dracula movie is the original?

  2. What movie adaptation is the closest to the book?

  3. Is Bram Stoker’s book the original Dracula telling or is there one before that?

  4. Is there an order to watch Dracula/Van Helsing movies?

  5. From watching this movie, am i now educated enough to watch other adaptations such as the Luke Evan’s version?

TIA to everyone willing to read and discuss :) Happy October!

Recommendation What’s a movie to watch on a rainy night

I just finished all my exams after a long stressful week, I just wanna watch a movie that’s fun but also beautifully shot. Any movies that come to mind I’m open to checking out all recommendations so don’t be shy. Like the range could go from dune or blade runner 2049 to winter light or like a barry Lyndon. I really don’t mind any type of color palette🥹
