Might not be the best answer here, but I've heard this sentiment being said about Future by some of his older fanbase who were there at the time.

Around 2014 during the release of his second studio album, Honest, his career atleast quality wise was looking shaky considering how much of his fanbase and critics alike genuinely did not fuck with that album because of the singing/songs for the ladies on there that made them believe he "Went Pop" and really was one bad album away from completely falling off. It wasn't until the 1-2 effect of Monster and Beast Mode that we him ultimately reinventing himself into the Future that everyone knows and loves now.

My brother-in-law passed away over the weekend… this was from his last project (and best imo) called MACABRE. Just wanted you guys to have the chance to hear it.

Love you bro.

I was thinking today about how amazing the line “call for the monster beats and Blockhead got Animal drums like he Dr. Teeth” is, what are some other mid-song shoutouts on that level? (not counting something like Mastermind where it’s the entire song)
