General Discussion Jordan Spieth putting

Has anyone followed Spieth's career all along? Does he still putt short/medium putts looking at the hole or has he abandoned it? When he has had trouble putting, did he stay with it?

What do you think about the technique? I am trying it, it is certainly interesting. Not sure I will stick with it but it certainly works. The issue is does it work better than conventional so that you make more putts, the simple bottom line.

General Discussion Solo high-handicap golfer looking to visit Ireland – advice

• Upvotes

Hi everyone

After binge-watching the documentary A Course Called Ireland with Bill Murray, I’ve been inspired to visit Ireland and experience some of these amazing courses for myself (ordered Tom Coyne’s book).

The only thing is, I’m usually a solo golfer and play off a fairly high handicap. Is it realistic for someone like me to visit and enjoy some of Ireland’s courses? Do many courses allow solo bookings, or is it difficult to get a tee time as a single player?

I’m not looking to play the most prestigious or expensive courses. I’d just love to experience a couple of beautiful courses, enjoy the scenery and soak up the atmosphere without spending a fortune.

I’m based in the south of England, so Dublin is only just over an hour’s flight from Southampton Airport. Ideally, I’d love to explore Ireland’s southwest coast, although I’m open to suggestions!

I’d really appreciate any recommendations for:

Courses to play that are welcoming to solo golfers and higher handicappers.

Where to stay and the best areas to base myself.

The best time of year to visit, considering the weather, course conditions and costs.

General advice or experiences from anyone who’s done a similar trip.

I’d love to hear your suggestions, especially from anyone who’s travelled around Ireland playing golf on their own.

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion Finally broke 90

I did it! Almost at the end of my third season, I was finally able to break 90 the first time (88 hits total).

What surprised me; I did that with a hangover, after only 3 hours of sleep, it was my first round on that course, and it rained almost the whole time while having only 8° (celcius).

I also didnt notice until hole 16, that there is a chance today - maybe thats the reason I was able to finally do it.
Anyways, I´m super happy I was able to hit all my goals for this season with that round and wanted to share that with you guys, since I really had doubts in meeting my season-goals this year and I consider myself the most untalented golfer that has ever tried to become somewhat decent in the game.

I played +200 rounds in total (most of them only 9 holes), spent a ton of time at the putting-green, chipping and driving range. Of course I also watched a freaking ton of youtube videos, filmed myself, and even went to the pro two times - In other words, I think I definitely have a factual basis for claiming to be one of the worst ever.

Thats a great achievement for me, even though for many of you a round in the 80s is propably a pretty bad day.

My goal for next season is to consistently shoot under 90, and if I ever manage to shoot under 80, that would of course be wonderful; but I think that’s more of a long-term goal and might be about as far as I can go.

What I'm trying to say is: Don't give up hope. I've been there, but then, when you least expect it, you suddenly manage to pull it off. Keep going.

General Discussion Phil Kenyon putting challenge videos

I did the Phil Kenyon's 5 day putting challenge back in 2017 or 18. The first video was about start line, where you'd put up a two tee gate maybe 12 inches along the line...

Fast forward to 2026 and I am now a recovering yips artist - and am looking for those drills again as everything has changed and I need ro relearn. But i can't find them. The website isn't working and the FB page is also closed.

Does anyone have those videos and could share? Would be super grateful for the help!

General Discussion 18 memorable holes

Trying to identify quality courses that have a ton of variety hole to hole. Each one memorable and sticks in the brain. Played quite a few top ranked / bucket list courses and some have been completely wiped from the memory with too many holes being mundane and repetitive.

For me, Sherwood CC has always stuck. I can remember every hole and it’s just a load of fun off every tee box.

Any great courses in America with 18 memorable holes?

General Discussion Needing some advice. (building a club set)

So I used to be into golf as teen, which was mainly my grandpa taking me to the driving range at least 3-4 times a month during the Summer. Since then, I can't remember the last time I've done anything golf related other than playing 9 holes with my uncle over 10 years ago.

I'm looking into getting back into the swing of things though since I have a cousin who's into golf now but I don't have any clubs.

What do you guys recommend as a good starter set? I just saw the video by Rick Shiels the other day and I'm kind of going off his recommendations as well but wouldn't mind having extra opinions.

I've been scrounging FB marketplace, ebay, and offerup for anything I can find but would like to stay under $300. Thanks for the help

Beginner Questions Swing confidence for newbs?

I’ve been playing since July and putting a lot of time in, as well as a lesson or two a month. I know inconsistency is the soul of shit golf, but I’m hitting the point where I’m flushing my irons on the range and then, during the short walk to the tee, chonking / Scalding / shanking everything. Like my brain can’t connect the ease of movement from the range to the tees.

Is it as simple as ignoring everything and swinging like I’m on the range? Or just stick with the repetition until it clicks in any format? Or, is there some sort of dark ritual I can perform?

I’m aware the answer is probably “shut up and keep swinging” but curious to hear how others transitioned when first starting out.

Serious Washing hats

Hey guys,

I need to wash some golf hats. I’m thinking about soaking them in the tub or using one of those hat holders for the washing machine.

Any other suggestions? Can’t seem to find much info in this sub.

EDIT: Clearly I was the only one who has seen all the hats in the dishwasher posts in the past few weeks. This is what I get for trying to be sarcastic/funny.

My wife and I were recently in Cabo, Mexico and while golfing at Sol Mar Golf Links, I got my first hole in one on the 150yd par 3 11th hole. Great course and definitely a round I’ll never forget. All of the staff at Sol Mar definitely made the celebration afterwards even better.

Beginner Questions How to improve chipping?

I had a very frustrating round of golf the other day. I was getting out of the tee box and onto the fairway, my iron game was solid, even sunk a couple of nice long puts. My score was ass though specifically because of short chips around the green. A couple of times I was pin high in two shots and then took another 2-3 just to get on the green. This is my first season golfing frequently and the one part of my game that hasn't improved at all. What should I do?

Swing Help Tips on becoming more consistent?

I've been playing for 20 years this year, have never broken 80. Shot 80 on the nose in 2022 and decided my goal for 2023 was to break 80. Didn't happen, hasn't happened yet. I have been taking lessons and they really have helped me stop thinking about a lot of the small stuff. I can hit every shot. I went to the range Sunday, hit several balls with my 9i, hit them all almost perfect. I can hit my driver 300 though I would say I am typically 275ish. And that's plenty.

My problem in consistency.

Like on sunday, hole number 1 I sliced my tee shot OB after having hit several perfect shots on the range. I hooked my tee shot on number 4. But then on Number 7? I nearly drive the green on a 330 par 4. Hit the ball perfectly and hit it exactly where I aimed. Then number 8? Banana slice. Number 12, long par 5 I hit it dead straight and then hit the green in 2. Number 13? short par 3 and I hit it short in the water... and so on.

And this is a course I am a member of, I play 3 times a week so it's not like I don't know the course.

I understand that even the best in the world hit bad shots. But my bad shots are BAD. And again it's just inconsistent. Is there something anyone has found in similar circumstances that helped them be more consistent for 18? When I play, on number 1 if I hit a good tee shot I usually say "1 down 13 to go. Like, I only need to hit 36 good balls in order to score dedcently but I just seem to have too many goof ups every round.

General Discussion Returned Callaway Opus Wedge to Starter at El Prado in Chino

This was on the Butterfield course this past Sunday (10/25). What are the chances it makes it back to its owner? I’m new to golf and started thinking I should have said something like I know the guy from playing here but don’t have his contact info. Hoping they don’t just keep it.

If you’re on here, I hope you got it back! Sincerely Platinum II dude.

Equipment Upgrade 1999 Irons?

As title, so I as a beginner (been playing 3 years now) have got a full set of cobra irons which I found on marketplace and when i researched them they are from 1999. Driver is newer and by newer 2010 and similar woods and putter.

I have a lot of fun playing with my set and they are all in pretty good condition. But my questions is this do you think i as a high handicapper would even notice any difference?

Ive been working on my swing and practicing lots and finally things seem to be coming together (more consistency) still hit my fair share of belters. Thoughts?

General Discussion Hadn't broken 90 yet, shot 83

Pretty much on the dot one year into golfing I broke 90 for the first time, and it was with an 83. I was just entering my scores into Grint and not really paying attention but one of my buddies toward the end of the round was saying "dude what are you scoring on the back half, you must be killing it." Looked at the end of the round and couldn't believe my eyes. I had to go through each hole mentally a few times to make sure I scored it right.

He had paid good attention, because I shot 39 on the back half. I was baffled.

3 double bogeys

9 bogeys

4 pars

2 birdies

that's all it took. it seems so easy when you put it like that. I played safe, I kept my head clear during my swing, and I only ever swung 80%. Birdied two par 3s, and the four pars included one that I holed from 75 yards out with a 60. Watching that ball fall over the horizon into the hole was fucking magical

Serious Ping G710s

Have been using these ping g710s as my irons and for my PW + UW. I just started golf and have been playing for two months but I’ve improved a decent amount since I started.

Wanted to know if anyone had any inputs on these clubs, how was your experience? Do you like them? Also on game improvement irons in general.
