Mod Post Subreddit Rules CLARIFIED

The Mods have returned and we've worked this week to rewrite the subreddit rules to better explain what each one means. This post will be locked from discussion as it just meant to serve as a reference point for the rules in place for the community Please see the linked post in the comment below for the discussion. Thank you for your patience during "chaos week". Please know that the Mod Team saw everything and stepped in only where it was absolutely necessary.

  1. Be Kind and Courteous: This rule *should* be self explanatory. In case it isn’t, follow the Golden Rule and treat others how you would want to be treated.
    1. Comments that are mean, hurtful, and/or harassing towards OP, the mod team, or another user will result in a 3-day ban from r/crochet. Do it again when the ban is lifted, 7-day ban. Continued negative comments after the 2nd chance will result in a permanent ban from this community.
      1. Permanent bans can be appealed but it will be at the discretion of the mod team, and will be dependent on behavior during the ban. Accounts with hidden profiles will not be eligible for being unbanned.
      2. Ban evasion goes against Reddit ToS, which all users agree to upon sign-up. See rule 11 for more info.
    2. We are bound by Moderators Code of Conduct to ensure that this space is a positive experience for everyone. That includes shutting down conversations that devolve into insult-flinging and inciting violence in any way. It also includes locking posts that have (or have the potential to) become unruly and wildly off-topic.
  2. Do not share copyrighted material: Don’t share screenshots of a pattern you bought or obtained for free from a website. Instead link directly to the website it was purchased from. If it is your own pattern, please see Rule 4.
  3. Use the NSFW filter *generously*: we are not censoring anyone's bodies with this rule. We are providing a safe space for anyone anywhere to view the feed. If you can’t show it at the office or at school, it should be filtered.
    1. This includes but is not limited to: revealing clothing, profanity, weapons and drug paraphernalia.
  4. NO Self promotion except in the monthly Promo Megathread: Sellers can post *pictures* of their work with tasteful, unobtrusive watermarks. Watermarks are encouraged to be used by all users to deter images being stolen by bots or scammers.
    1. We don’t allow sellers to share links to their shop/website/blog/social media EXCEPT in the Monthly Buy/Sell/Promote/Trade Megathread. This is a pinned post on r/crochet.
      1. Self promotion includes, but is not limited to, mentioning your shop/etc by name or offering to DM others or be DM’d by others with the express intent on sharing the info, or directing users to your profile for links. If anyone is truly interested in finding your work, they will know where to look.
      2. The Megathread refreshes automatically every month, and links can be posted there as often as you wish (please don’t spam it).
      3. Please do not promote on behalf of someone else as it still directly impacts the seller, even if they don’t use Reddit.
  5. Fursday Friends- Please post pictures of your crochet *helpers* on Thursdays only (timezones are taken into consideration)
    1. If you made an item for your dog/cat/lizard/toddler/teenager, and they are modeling it, you can post those pics on any day of the week.
    2. If your furry friend is in the background of your pic and obviously not the focus of the pic, you can post it any day of the week.
    3. If Fido or Fluffy decided that your WIP is the best place to take a nap, please wait to post that pic on Thursday.
    4. We prefer it if minor’s faces are blurred or otherwise covered for privacy.
  6. Stash Saturday- Please post stash pics on Saturdays only (timezones are taken into consideration)
    1. Stash pics include but are not limited to yarn hauls, hooks, tools, books, and crafting spaces.
  7. Focus on the crochet, not the model: Modeled photos are great, especially for wearables! Please ensure that the focus of the image is on the crochet work, though, and not on the model or the poses.
    1.  The crochet work should be clearly seen (close ups whenever possible). See rule 3 if necessary.
    2. This also applies to comments that focus on someone’s body rather than the crochet work. Negative or derogatory comments made against OP or someone else will be subject to Rule 1.
  8. Please post questions in r/CrochetHelp: This is not a “beginner’s only” subreddit. Crocheters from all skill-levels can get tripped up depending on the project! Whether it’s a poorly-written pattern, a long-forgotten WIP that needs stitch ID, or you’re looking for color or fiber suggestions. It’s also a great opportunity for those who are highly skilled at the craft to flex their expertise by answering questions!
    1. Most, if not all crochet-related questions should go to our dedicated help sub. Questions can get lost in the main sub.
      1. Questions include but are not limited to: “what can I make with this yarn?” “How do I fix this?” “Why is it curling?” “What should I get for my gf/wife who loves to crochet?” and questions about crochet-related pain (please seek actual medical advice for major or worsening pains!)
  9. Stale Topics: These are topics that have been over-discussed and are no longer active discussion topics.
    1. Stale topics currently include: Hobby Lobby’s business practices, Steering wheel covers, Selling advice (see rule 4), the “sweater curse”, Fast Fashion and rants about their costs, crochet-related pain/medical issues, Woobles kits, and AI (including suggesting its use in pattern help)
  10. No off-topic posts or comments: if it is not related to crochet, it is considered off-topic. Please find an appropriate subreddit for your post.
  11. Ban Evasion: please do not use or create alt accounts to get around a ban. This is against Reddit ToS and we will report this to the Reddit admin.
  12. No fund-raising or solicitation of goods or yarn: This includes asking for replacement yarn after theft or loss, requests for items for a charity/cause, offers or requests for trades. Please see r/craftexchange, r/yarnswap, or your local community’s subreddit for these kinds of requests. This also includes requests for commissions, see r/CrochetRequests for this.
  13. No Karma farming: Please don’t use r/crochet to earn “easy Reddit karma”. Please only post your own work made by yourself or someone you know.
  14. Please do not suggest the use of AI/ChatGPT for pattern creation or help: AI artificially creates crochet patterns and images that are very nearly impossible to replicate, and is becoming harder and harder to spot because of its overuse. We also ask that you don’t use it to enhance the backgrounds of your finished work either, as it takes away from the realness of crochet.

Finally finished

My first wearable project!

F*ck AI Skeleton Sweater by Earthtricks

It's taken me well over 6 months, first time doing anything that wasn't finished in 2 or 3 days, first time doing anything I could wear, first time doing tapestry crochet.

There was many mistakes along the way, some frogging, some literally cutting away whole chunks and stitching parts back together. It's not perfect, but it was never meant to be because I'm still learning and I've learnt a lot :) still happy with what I've achieved. What's next?!?!

Halloween FO/WIP Bucket of Popcorn Costume

My daughter wanted to be a bucket of popcorn for Halloween this year! The pattern is self drafted. The bucket is just rows of double crochet, and the kernels were individually crocheted following the Secret Yarnery's youtube video. The costume inspired a movie theater theme for Halloween; her little brother is the ICEE, and grandma and myself are concession stand workers.

Happy Halloween!!

Finished Object I’m am so proud of this blanket!

So technically I finished this blanket during the summer, however it took me until yesterday to finally get around to sewing in the last 30 or so threads.

This blanket pattern has been on my to do list for at-least two years as I am a procrastinator by nature and was overwhelmed in colour choices. Well this year I put myself on a yarn buying ban as I have A-LOT that I should really be using . When looking through my stash for this project I realised that I had a lot of pinks and purples and my bedroom is a similar colour scheme, so that was the colour situation sorted.

I grabbed every single yarn skein I had that had a hint of pink or purple and some dark yellow/ pumpkin? yarn that I had to add some contrast. Plus I had a glittery version of a similar colour that I thought would add some pizzaz to the butterfly’s.

Finished Object I made a granny square bag out of a thrifted sweater + pillowcase

I’d been wanting to make a granny square bag for a long time and finally did it. Shout out to r/knitting for helping me unravel the sweater. And to y’all when I posted about modifying the handle on the bag. I’m happy with how it turned out and that it’s eco-friendly since I used secondhand materials. The sweater is 100% cotton and this took just about all of the sleeves so I still have the body of the sweater left to use for something else. And I only used one side of the pillowcase.

Discussion Never adjust your tension for a project.

I’ve been crocheting for more than 50 years, and I grimace every time I see someone mention doing this. If you feel you need to make an adjustment to achieve the gauge for a project use a different hook or yarn size. This is especially true if you’re the type of crocheter who rotates working on different projects.

Made with #3 thread and 2.25 mm hook. I was trying to use up yarn I had lying around but ran out and had to buy more. Oh well. It was a fun first doily pattern, and now I’m ready for Halloween.

Image descriptions: a crocheted round doily in off-white featuring six cute ghosts.

Just wanted to share this little crochet summer top I made! 🤍🌸
I really love how the floral details and delicate stitches turned out.
It took some patience, but I'm pretty happy with the final result.
What do you guys think? Would you wear something like this? 🧶💕

Top-Down Crochet Raglan using Waffle Stitch Front/Back-Post Ribbing for Cuffs & Collar

Caron Latte Cakes in Colors “Blueberry” and “Cream”

4.5mm hook

Worked on it consistently for about 3 weeks then left it lol. Would have probably finished it in 4 weeks if I stayed consistent.

Finished Object I just finished the poncho for my nephew’s girlfriend.

I freehanded the first poncho and took notes along the way. For this poncho I double checked my directions and the stitch counts. I will put the “pattern”in the comments in case anyone is interested. Please understand that I do not know how to read patterns so I have no idea how to write them in a standard format. I like the steps written out in a list format as I find that easier to follow.

I used a 6.0 mm hook to make the neck opening. I switched to an 8.0 mm hook for the rest of the poncho. I needed three skeins for the poncho leaving only a small ball of yarn leftover. I bought four skeins of yarn to be on the safe side.

Because of that extra skein I have enough yarn to make her a hat and scarf set as well. I only just started the hat. But the plan is for the brim to be in the poncho color (Cat’s Cradle)and the body of the hat will be in Premier Puzzle yarn in white. The Pom Pom will be a mix of the two yarns. I made a two toned hat once before. It is actually easier than I thought. The trick is to pull the yarn color just completed to the front then pick up the new color which is below. At the boundary of the two colors you start the stitch in the old color then switch to the new color for the final yarn over and pull through.

Here is the tutorial I used to make that first hat: Two Toned Hat https://youtu.be/_SU_TUomPIA?si=nQqqECHYBADNgG5c

I saw someone's cardigan here that she made for her niece and I loved it so much so I had to make my own version. 12 colors in the squares, plus the black. I stitched it together however I felt like so there's not really any consistency on the black.

4 hook and Two of Wands Cottino yarn. It's a cotton/superwash merino blend.

Work in Progress First Time Blocking, Way More Difference than Expected

Post image
165 Upvotes

I’ve always been the crocheter that didn’t block anything, and I figured that I probably never would. Been working on a cashmere blanket made of multiple unraveled sweaters, meaning that the yarn isn’t 100% equal in gauge, so I figured I’d do it just this once to make the squares match as much as possible before joining.

Wow. The difference between the blocked and unblocked squares is huge, and I wasn’t anticipating just how crisp the corner edges on the blocked squares would become.

I can’t say I find the blocking process enjoyable (probably mostly because my blocking board is a bunch of darning needles stabbed into a shoebox), but this has definitely converted me to seeing the value in doing it

Work in Progress Rainbow in a storm weighted blanket progress

Thumbnail

Im working on a king size weighted blanket with ponybeads on every other stitch to make it weighted! Its going to be a christmas gift for my nerodivergent sister who's going through a rough time right now. The beads are a fun texture and soothing to rub your hand across, and the weight is very comforting. Its about halfway done, expected to be 20lbs in the end!!

Looking at it in pictures its a little hard to see the rainbow blues and greens but I loves how gloomy the yarn i picked looked, it reminded me of the sky at the end of a storm.

Edit: I just had the most horrifying realization that ive been doing double crochet stitches instead of half double crochet stitches and now im wondering do I switch to the correct stitches? Do I continue with my mistake because im 80hrs into this project and just try to forget i ever had this realization and carry on like nothing is wrong? Do I frog it all (10 skeins, 1000's of beads....) and try again? Im leaning towards forgetting i ever realized it was the wrong stitch......

Edit 2: thank you everyone for being so kind about it!!! ❤️❤️ I need to have more grace with myself than expecting perfection in everything, this is only my 2nd crochet project ever so I dont know a whole ton, but im having fun figuring it out as I go.

Finished Object My 5 month Birkin project

Thumbnail

I learned to crochet last year, so this was a big project for me! I tried to keep the tension high, so it was a labour of love!

Pattern: thatcrochetguy
Yarn: 2 strands of Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/8 Walnut (15), I used 20 skeins
Hook: 4.5mm
Hardware: Babylon leather

Also to add some tips:
- The videos on TikTok from swaydoescrochet are really helpful to assist with reading the pattern, as it’s not written like patterns usually are.
- They also advise about not doing a turning stitch, which is what I followed to get crisp edges. So I didn’t chain and turn, I just turned and went straight in for the next row.
- The designer, that crochet guy has a YouTube on how to stop the handles from stretching by adding a lining, which I followed.
- I also bought a Birkin liner which sits inside the bag to help keep the shape.
