AI generated content

1.7k Upvotes

We do not permit AI generated cosplay in this community.

This community uses a Reddit application that scans each post, if it identifies AI generated content it notifies the moderators and the post is removed and the user could be banned.

We understand that cosplayers like to edit their pics to make them look more like the source material. After all who would not want to see AquaMan under water, a hobbit in the shire, an Jedi in battle, etc.

If you post a pic that has been edited (filtered, added background, etc.) especially if you use AI tools to do it… we strongly suggest you include an unedited pic in your post. Moderators will be checking for it, if your post is identified as AI, it could save your post from being removed, and you being banned.

If you suspect a post of being generated by AI, just report it. Include any evidence you have. “Left hand looks weird” is not evidence. Proof of AI detection is.

Making “Ai slop” comments in the post is not helpful, and will be removed as gatekeeping, and can get you banned.

See the community rules and pinned Cosplay Post and comment Guidance.

Edits

  • Added additional clarification around AI editing.
  • Added additional clarification on reporting with evidence.

Cosplay post guidance

The following outlines how the Cosplay community is moderated, and what is expected of the users who post/comment here. Any questions should be sent to the moderators via modmail.

Expectations of the community

  • Follow the Rules of both Reddit and this community. You are responsible for ensuring your post/comments meet the rules of the community prior to posting.

  • Report content that breaks the rules so it is brought to the attention of the moderators quicker. This helps make the community a more enjoyable place.

Community Rules

1) Treat everybody with respect

Posts or comments that are creepy, vulgar, invasive or abusive in anyway will be removed and the user banned. Comments should be about the cosplay not the cosplayer’s body, race, sex, sexual preference, religion, ethnicity etc.

Examples of comments that violate this rule: * Nice tits * I'd hit that * Your to fat to cosplay Aquaman. * You are a 🤬, just ☠️. * You are not the correct race/sex to cosplay this character * gross

2) Posts must be correctly titled

The Post title must include the name of the character being cosplayed, and be free of emojis, ascii art and social media account information.

Examples of posts that violate this rule: * My new cosplay * My new Aquaman cosplay on IG: @COSPLAYMOD * My new Aquaman cosplay ❤️ * My new Aquaman cosplay <3

3) Spam is prohibited

Do not advertise in any way, do not ask for upvotes, likes, follows, or money. Keep posts to no more than one every 24 hours, and do not repost a cosplay.

Examples that violate this rule: * Selling my Aquaman cosplay on ebay * I am in a Aquaman cosplay contest please vote for me * My Aquaman post did so well this morning here is another pic * Check out my Aquaman discord * Look at this pic I drew

Note: Reposting of cosplay may be permitted if improvements have been made to the cosplay. If improvements have been made, then those should be detailed in the title.

For example: * Halfway done sewing my Aquaman cosplay * Completed my Aquaman cosplay for Atlantis Con 41 * Added scale armor to my Aquaman cosplay * My AquaMan with a Superman Cosplayer I found at Atlantis Con

4) AI Generated Images, Memes, and bots are prohibited.

Examples that violate this rule: * A meme post, however a cosplay of a meme may be permitted. * AI generated images. Filtered/edited pictures are permitted, however you should also include an unedited pic as well. * The use of bots to edit all your previous posts or comments will get you banned.

5) NSFW content and porn accounts are not permitted.

We have a large percentage of minors (users under the age of 18) in this community, so NSFW content... our definition not yours. See image attached to this post or the community rules. Posts that focus on an cosplayers body part or of a NSFW topic may also be removed at the moderators discretion.

Accounts with ties to NSFW content or NSFW pay sites such as "OF" cannot post here. There are many other communities that welcome this content. Not sure why anyone would want to try to advise porn in a child friendly community, but we ban accounts daily.

6) Fraudulent Posts or trying to ID a cosplayer is not permitted

This community is for cosplayers and their photographers to post their work. Posting the work of others is not permitted.

Examples of posts that violate this rule. * A pic my friend wanted me to post of their Aquaman cosplay. * No really, she is my best friend/girl friend and I have her permission. * I found this funny pic of a fat dude in a Aquaman cosplay

7) Help posts are not permitted

There are communities established specifically to help cosplayers.

A couple examples are: * /r/cosplayhelp * /r/sewing * /r/cosplaywigs * /r/3dPrinting * Use Reddit's search functions to find an appropriate community for a specific topic.

General Notes about the community

  • Rules Change over time The cosplay community evolves over time, and so does the community's rules. Posts and comments are held to the rules as they were when the post was made.

  • Holidays and Events Mods may suspend a specific rule/rules during a Holliday or special event. Doing so it at the mods discretion and may not be announced ahead of time.

  • Not all rule violations are equal. Minor violations may get a warning. Doing so it at the mods discretion.

  • Removed Content that was provided a removal reason is considered a warning.

  • This is a cosplay community, posts should focus on the cosplay, users should expect criticism to their cosplay as well as praise. Feedback should be useful to the poster and detail how the cosplay can be improved. Comments that cross the line into gatekeeping will not be tolerated.

  • Trolling posts/comments should just be reported, don't engage with trolls.

  • Low effort and other posts that do not contribute positively to the community should be downvoted.

Moderation

  • Moderators are not employees of Reddit they are human volunteers. They volunteer in the cosplay community during their free time, between their real-life obligations such as job, family and friends.

  • Moderators treat rule violators like a cop may treat a speeder. It does not matter what someone else has posted, if you violated the rules actions will be taken against you. We will not discuss actions taken or not taken with another user. If you are aware of other content that breaks the rules, report it.

  • We do not issue temporary bans

  • This community uses Reddit’s available moderation tools to identify: repeat infractions, likely to break the rules, circumventing a previous ban, are promoters of adult content or websites.

  • Crowd Control If a moderator believes a specific post may generate rule breaking comments, the moderator may adjust the post's "Crowd Control" Settings.

  • Use modmail to communicate with the moderators, do not send DM/PM's directly to moderators. They will just re-direct you to modmail. Using modmail also helps ensure transparency between the mods.

  • Moderators answer requests in the order they are received, do not send multiple messages. Doing so just slows down the process for you, the mod, and anyone else trying to get assistance.

Moderator expectations:

  • Follow and enforce the Reddit website rules in a fair and consistent manner.

  • Follow and enforce the cosplay community rules in a fair and consistent manner.

Almost everything is homemade! Pretty pleased with how it turned out, considering I started putting it together at the beginning of October.

Future steps are to add a glowing element to the chest, make some more accurate pants, and build myself an ax!

It took me a while to get everything just right, but I was going for Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit.

Most of the outfit was thrifted and modified by yours truly.

  • Jacket: A corduroy evening coat that I altered for a better fit.
  • Vest: A tweed vest I found at Goodwill. It was missing all its buttons, so I added new ones.
  • Shirt: A white linen, low-collar button-up, also from Goodwill.
  • Pants: Brown corduroys from Goodwill that I chopped down into what are basically capris.
  • Pipe: An officially licensed Lord of the Rings pipe called "The Rivendell."
  • Hobbit feet: 100% natural. I'm planning to shave my back the day before Halloween and repurpose the hair for a little extra foot floof. Waste not, want not.

This is basically my first serious attempt at cosplay, and definitely the first time I've put this much effort into getting a costume right. Lots of thrifting, minor alterations, and figuring things out as I went.

I'd genuinely love some feedback, especially from fellow Tolkien fans and experienced cosplayers. How'd I do?

Self Thumb Thumb - Spy Kids

Thumb Thumb from Spy Kids (second picture is a still from one of the movies)

I'm back at it with another cosplay project, this time it's a Thumb Thumb from the 2001 masterpiece Spy Kids (although they allegedly also appear in most of the sequels, which I haven't seen)

Because I'm obviously all thumbs, I made sure my 3D printer did most of the important work.

Materials: - Close to 4kg of PLA filament (1kg in the helmet / head thing, 500g each for the hand things, and 1kg each for the foot things) - Red shirt (off-the-shelf) - Red sweatpants (off-the-shelf) - Two red pillow covers and some safety pins to attack them to the sweatpants (I cut a hole in the top side while the bottom side falls over the foot covers) - Heels to reduce my footprint area (second hand) - Ribbons to enable my feet to lift up the foot pieces.

I used a Creative Commons thumb model as the basis for this costume. I had already measured my head with Cosplay Calipers and resized a base helmet design to fit my head using RefMaker, so I essentially just needed to adapt my base helmet to the thumb design.

I ended up printing the front and back parts of the head separate and made them attach and detach using magnets. I recently got my Creality Ender-6 working again, so the 57+ hour print of the front side was a good stress test. Didn't print anything on my Bambu Lab A1 Mini printer this time as the Ender-6's 250x250x400mm print area proved wonderful for my needs. For previous projects, I cut my models into way more parts which made them look less than ideal in the end. Eye holes are made by removing a cylinder (scaled along the X-axis) from the front side, then glueing in a part based on the same cylinder that has square holes made into it. I ended up scaling the eye lattice to be 1mm less wide than the hole for easier fitting.

The hand pieces are almost identical to the head piece, just uniformly scaled where the head uses about a 1.5x relative scale along the y-axis. I added a cylindrical hole for my hands to go in, and cylindrical grips inside those. The hands were printed upside down so I would essentially only need support material below the grips.

For the feet, I once again had to scale the model along the Y-axis. I removed a rectangular prism with rounded corners for my feet to go through and pretty much maxed out my Ender-6's print area (X and Z axes were exact fits to my printing area, I had a little bit of leeway along the Y axis and would have liked even more spare area but I couldn't reduce my footprint more along that axis than I was already doing with the heels). The end result has some truly off proportions along that axis.

I used ribbons I had once bought for a different cosplay project but didn't end up using to create bands that rest on my feet so I can actually walk with the thumb feet (without them my feet would simply go up through the 40cm tall hole, a recipe for disaster). These were glued to the inside of the foot tunnel with contact glue, whereas the front and back sides of the feet were attached to each other with cyanoacrylate glue.

To hide the horizontal platform on top of the thumb feet, I added pillow covers with holes in them for my legs that just about extend over the thumb feet's upper side. I affixed them to the sweatpants with safety pins. It gives the costume an unintended 70s disco vibe, resembling the flared pants of the era, and while it wasn't planned, I love it a lot.

Wanted to try something unusual with this one, so we shot half a set on a very long exposure. The shutter stayed open while the light was painted around me, so the halo, the glowing "wings" and the motion trails all happened right in camera, not in editing
