SubReddit Announcement: A New Rule and Deputy Moderators

Hello everyone,

I know, you folks barely hear from us moderators. Truth is, we're both super busy and really only show up when called upon. I recently stumbled upon a post here bemoaning an up-tick of low-effort posts where people expect an unrealistic amount of hand-holding without much apparent thought of their own on the level of ask they are making. Therefore, a few changes around here to help keep this place tidy:

  • A new rule! No low-effort posts:

Cosplayers are passionate craftspeople. The skills and knowledge that you come here seeking comes from effort born of that passion. If you would like help with your costume, all that we ask is that you show a bit of that effort yourself. Posts must show some time and thought from you on the project you are requesting help with, and some basic understanding of the scope it would entail. Not just a blanket "I want this, HELP PLEASE!"

  • New Deputy Moderators: I'd say I'm introducing you to these people, but you see from them more than you've ever seen from me. I've reached out to some of our most vocal commenters and granted them the power to moderate posts and comments. Rather than having to report rule-breaking posts, which they have been very good at, they now have the power to directly clean them up themselves. I'll still pop in if somebody needs to be banned or larger changes need to be made, but I've seen consistent great advice from these people, and I trust them to maintain the quality of discussion here on r/CosplayHelp. Everyone say thank you to:

Cosplay 101 answers to a lot of basics

First and foremost. Your health and safety is more important than 100% accuracy. If making or wearing the item will be dangerous or painful don’t do it.

Second, I’d add this info to the FAQ but it appears I don’t have enough karma to update it personally! If the info is in the FAQ I did not duplicate it here! (The FAQ is on the sidebar! It wasn’t visible before for some reason but it’s up now!)

This is not a comprehensive list, but I hope to be able to update it when I come across new or important information! I do hope if you’re looking for something not featured here, it will at least give you a base knowledge set on how to be able to search for what you’re looking for.

------------------GENERAL TIPS-----------------------------

(Where to find certain things, very basic crafting info)

EDIT TO REMOVE INFO ABOUT COSPLANNER APP, it doesn't appear to exist anymore!

-To find patterns, or specific props. These are host websites for artists or creators where they can sell things like Etsy, or Redbubble. Etsy is a fantastic place to look for patterns to make props or cosplay pieces, sometimes you can even find people open for commissions! Artists on instagram will almost always have links to their shops to buy things, so explore there too.

-To find cheaper clothing pieces, props, or things to be altered try thrift stores. So Goodwill or other small local resale shops. This will likely take more than one trip so don’t give up if you don’t get it in one go. Ebay is also a good place to check believe it or not, there’s just a slight learning curve to searching things to find what you want.

-Dance and Athletic apparel websites will have things like leotards, bodysuits, specialized undergarments etc. They’re going to be a little pricier but they’ll be good quality, durable, and 9 times out of 10 machine washable!

-Hardware stores, paintball and airsoft companies, military/paramilitary surplus, and second hand sports equipment stores may also be good places to check for bits and pieces. Paintball/airsoft will also have a variety of masks and helmets that can be painted and altered.

-VERY IMPORTANT FOR PROP WEAPONS: Always look into your local guidelines and convention rules to see what kinds of prop weapons are allowed! Some cons have strict policies on what can and cannot be brought in!

-Michael’s, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby etc. and any local craft stores will have tons and tons of craft supplies. If you want to save money and keep up to date on sales check to see if you can join an email list. I know Joann’s has coupons in them all the time!

-You can buy a variety of brands of fabric paint from almost anywhere that sells craft supplies. This makes it easy to get designs or patterns on most fabrics. For changing the color of an entire garment I’d recommend dying it.

-Some fabrics can be dyed different colors very easily, some cannot. A good way to tell is if the fabric is natural (cotton, linen etc.) it is generally easier to dye. The more synthetic (fake) a fabric is the longer and slightly more complicated it will be. Tulip is an excellent dye brand and they offer both regular and synthetic dyes with nice simple instructions right on the packages!

-You can make stencils out of craft foam or thicker paper to make it easier to copy logos or symbols on whatever you’re making!

-Wig and contact websites are listed in the FAQ but there are companies like dental distortions that make tooth veneers that can take a cosplay to the next level!

-Hollywood makeup, FX, and costume professionals almost always have social media accounts they can be extremely helpful when it comes to reference images! For example the costumer who designed the Moon Knight suits has tons of detail and behind the scenes images on her instagram!

-Complicated cosplays can be simplified by boiling down the costume to its essentials the best way I’ve learned to do this is through toys or fan art. What things are essential to recognizing the character and what things could be left off! You don’t have to be 100% to be recognizable!

-If big all out cosplays aren’t your thing you can always try “bounding.” You’ll hear “Disneybounding” most often but you can do it with other things too of course! Disney doesn’t allow adults to dress as characters in their parks, but fans got creative. “Bounding” is more about matching colors, getting similar accessories, or finding just the right combination of things to make you think of the character. It’s hard to explain verbally but easy to understand once you look into it!

-Say you have an OC, and you want to cosplay your OC. That’s fine! Have at it! You’ve got no professional media to tie you down! All these tips can still help you find or make your cosplay!

-I do have a friendly reminder though, please remember you cannot expect people to know who your character is. And it’s not fair to get mad at them if they make a guess and the guess is wrong. A simple “Nope its an OC!” is plenty for most people! I’ve complimented plenty of cosplayers and asked about their cosplay only to find out it was an OC!

“Crossplay” safety

-DO NOT BIN D YOUR CHEST WITH ACE BANDAGES IT’S UNSAFE. Compression tops or more heavy duty sports bras are much safer. If the character has an open shirt you can use wig tape/skin tape to hold the material of the shirt to your skin. If you do not have breasts but are looking to add some to a cosplay you can always pad a bra. You’ll want to measure your chest around your pectorals, that will be the band size, the letter size will be the cup. So a 34A means your chest is 34 inches around and A would be the cup size you would be looking to fill. (I have more on taking measurements later.) Companies now sell latex chests with or without breasts for people looking to be the most accurate they can.

-You can always just “genderbend” the thing and cosplay them as the same gender you are. It’s okay. People do it all the time and it’s very widely accepted. There’s also a third, more neutral option, don’t obviously genderbend the thing? You don’t have to call attention to the fact that you’re not the same gender as the character you’re cosplaying.

-An example of what I’m trying to explain: I generally read as female, but have cosplayed Johnny Cage one of the male characters from Mortal Kombat. His base look is shirtless, with his own first name tattooed across his chest. The only change I made was putting “Johnny” on a crop top. I didn’t “feminize” the rest of the outfit or go out of my way to be read as male. There is a “middle option” when it comes to presentation and cosplay. At the end of the day everybody knows it’s just a costume.

-This tip might seem dumb, but you’re going to have to trust me here. This mainly applies to people looking to make large costume pieces or props by hand. People who are already kind of intermediate with their skills. If you’re stuck on something go see how furries would make it. Not kidding. I’ve made all kinds of non-furry things with tutorials put on the internet by a furry. The vast majority of them are fun, friendly people and the community as a whole is WILDLY talented and creative. You only ever really hear about the bad apples.

A big question I see here is “what is that piece of clothing?” That’s a good question! Here are some links to historical fashion databases! They’re all arranged a little differently BUT this is a place to start looking for what specific pieces of clothing or styles are called!

Here’s another important pro tip.

It’s okay.

Your cosplay doesn’t have to be perfect.

Cosplay is for fun and if it doesn’t feel fun or rewarding don’t do it. Other con goers and cosplayers aren’t going to judge you. If they do for some reason and try to make you feel bad about it, that says more about THEM and their personality than your ability. Everybody has to start somewhere. Nobody should be ashamed of learning and practicing and getting better. You can always go back and fix things or redo whole cosplays later on after your skills develop. This is a hobby and you have the right to participate in said hobby your own way.

I can add theatrical or FX makeup tips? things like scars, bruises, old age makeup, or like changing the face shape with very specific contouring?

I also have a draft of Convention tips similar to this post, would that be helpful as well?

Help smoothing stuffing under costume

1.5k Upvotes

Hi everyone! While this costume is not cosplay, I figured I'd go to the best for help!

I'm a teacher and have a taxidermy rat as our class pet named Paprika (they don't know it's fake lol). My students this year in particular are obsessed with her. I am being her for Halloween, and she is being me. Top secret! I am working on the body to create a "bell"-like shape (Paprika has some booty). I made the first top "stuffing" by rolling up an old mattress pad and sewing it together, then sewed three pillows together to make the larger part. Great in theory....but when I put the grey stretchy dress over it, you can see every lump and it doesn't curve gradually at all.

Any advice on how to get a smooth curve? Thanks so much!

Credit: the rat head is based off of these instructions!

Accessory Anyone know what kind of material I can get to replicate this cape?

Thumbnail

Hello! I’m new to making cosplay and am currently working on an Agamemnon suit for Halloween. I’ve been trying to search what kind of material this cape is made out of but I can’t find anything as nice. Is this some kind of wool? Does anyone know what the closest kind of fabric (that isn’t crazy expensive) to replicate this could be or close alternatives? I have a hobby lobby near me for fabrics and Amazon if anything.

How do I replicate the folds within the cape, is that just tucking them against each other and sewing a stitch?

Will adhesive Velcro work to pin it down under the medallions?

Thanks!

It keeps drooping downwards and ending up lopsided since the material isn’t strong enough to stiffen up like that, and it doesn’t really look as great with the collar down…

Wig Struggling with kids Cosplay- wig help?

Thumbnail

Ok, I want to start by saying I have no idea what I'm doing. None. I'm winging in and I'm winging it hard.

My kid has asked to cosplay a specific character from a Minecraft SMP. That's all kosher, I know the show and the character, it's kid friendly.

I've gotten pretty far into the process and the costume/cosplay is passable. I'm on the last step which is attaching some alien style antenna to the wig.

The antenna are floral wire wrapped in pipe cleaners, topped with a foam ball each that are also wrapped in pipe cleaners. The "presenting" length of the antenna is about a foot with a gentle curve forward so they sort of dangle (Like Mantis for Guardians of the Galaxy). At the end of that length is a 90⁰ bend and about 6 inches of floral wire.

I assumed I'd feed it into the wig, like through the skull cap and such but.. I have no idea. I'm worried the antenna may be too front heavy and lift the wig if I do that. I can't replace the wig on short notice either so I don't want to risk ruining it.

Should I make them shorter? That still leaves me with the issue of how to mount them. My kid is dead set against a headband, which makes sense as the cosplay also has a tiara. Could I mount the antenna to the tiara in some way, and if I did would I then have to somehow secure the tiara to the wig?

I've watched so many tutorials through this entire process but this is one I just can't find the specific answers for. Should I scrap the antenna entirely and try again with other material?

This is literally the last thing I need to do and have absolutely no clue how to do it. Sewing I can do, painting and redesigning, easy. Figuring out how to get the stupid antenna to stay put? Impossible.

I have access to pretty much every material needed for cosplay, though in off-brand form. I researched hard before starting and made sure to buy product best suited for the need. My kid is willing to suffer for this cosplay, but I'd rather keep the discomfort down as much as possible.

Attached are the antenna I described and just.. Help 🫠

Bought a replica ultimatrix from artcrist and since they don’t do sizing, it’s relatively loose around my wrist and will occasionally ride down my hand. Do any of you know a good way to make it a bit more secure while also still being able to put it in and take it off?

Prop Which 3D printer to buy for props?

Like title, just want to spend around 600 on a non-exposed one (not sure if that’s the right word) since it’s black friday. Doesn’t need to be fancy or big, just for props like weapons etc. Currently looking at bambu’s P1S or P2S, which would you recommend?

I found a helmet for my Ghost Nightwar cosplay. Quality or garbage?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi! I’m putting together my first cosplay—a fairly simple one: Ghost Nightwar from Call of Duty. I’ve been looking for a helmet with night-vision goggles (NVGs) and found one that also includes tactical headsets and a microphone. It’s on AliExpress, but since I’m new to the cosplay scene, I’m not sure if that’s a reliable source. I’d hate for it to be like Temu—where things fall apart almost immediately—as I’d like it to last for a couple of years of attending conventions (assuming I take good care of it). I’m also concerned about the NVGs: I need to know if they can be flipped up, or if they’re fixed in front of the eyes. It doesn’t matter if they function like real night-vision gear, but I do need to be able to see well enough to walk around without tripping when they’re down, and they need to stay in place when flipped up—I don’t want them falling down if I tilt my head forward. The helmet (which, again, comes with the NVGs, headset, Velcro, and microphone) costs "only" €95.39. This low price makes me question the product's quality. Should I consider buying it? In any case, if you’d like to take a look for yourselves, here’s the link: Link

I need to finish this by Halloween this weekend, and I don’t know the best thing to use to get this effect. I was just going to paint it but it won’t give the stiffness that the screen does. Maybe paper and a plastic cover? I really don’t know.

Wig Wig on a rollercoaster???

• Upvotes

My friends and I are going to an amusement park for Halloween. Though their cosplay will be very elaborate, mine is mainly a wig, cool makeup, and a dress. I'm very new to all of this, and too ashamed to ask them for help. Under my wig i wear the thights-looking thing that came with it but that's all. How can I make sure it will stay on? Helpp

Hi I'm currently working on a Maomao cosplay, In this outfit she has the new hair stick that Jinshi gave her (not the one she got in s1 at the garden party). I have only been able to find one website that sell similar hair sticks with the outfit, because I'm making my own dress I can't get this. Does Anyone know were I could get this hair stick (plus the other 3) for a reasonable price. If not what would be the best way to make them with all the small details. I don't have a 3D printer. Thanks

Sewing How to make a durable raggedy robe if I have to join a sheer fabric with background fabric

• Upvotes

hello there I’m pretty new to cosplay so I can’t say I’m the most skilled person nor I have a huge knowledge on sewing but I wanted to try and make a cosplay of a character I really like, the thing is that she’s from a stop motion movie and I belive they used tinsel to make her robe so shiny but I don’t see that being very useful when making a human sized version so I was wondering if there is any pattern or or tips anyone can give ?

last pic is the fabric I plan on using I’ll probably end up up going for the second one and a black preferably light fabric for the lining(?) cus where I live is pretty hot lmao

anyways any sort of guidance is very appreciated!!

Wig Hot pink to dark pink

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello, I ordered this synthetic wig and it’s a bit too bright for what I was looking for. I would like to dye it as I’d like just 2-3 shades darker. I read a lot of previous posts regarding this but I didn’t know if it being hot pink changes anything. I would definitely order a different wig as I read it’s a lot of work to dye, but nothing would arrive on time :(

My questions are:

Since the wig already is a hot pink if I dye it a darker pink, is it likely to take the color?

If not, does anybody have any other recommendations on how to get it a bit darker?

What products would best suit this?

It does have lace which makes it a bit difficult, so is there any way to minimize it dying the lace?

Thanks to anyone who can help 🩷🩷

Makeup Body Paint Timeline

• Upvotes

So I haven't had as much time to cosplay this year as I would like to/as I used to so I am going all out for Halloween and want to make sure it's perfect.

I've done face and neck paint before, but this will be my first time doing body paint covering a large portion of my body. It's for Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas so it's mostly one color with some easy decorations, including face, neck, arms, upper chest, and legs.

I was wondering how long this generally takes so I can plan when to start? I got a snazaroo paint from Michael's that is one of the ones you add water to.

Accessory How to paint this mask to look like exposed muscle?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

I'm putting the finishing touches on a Cenobite costume for Halloween and part of the ensemble is this mask from Spirit Halloween that I've cut the chin and part of the forehead off of so that it better fits my face. I've got a mustache and I don't have any semblance of talent with makeup so I figured a mask that's meant to look like it's my face would be a suitable alternative.

What primer (brand and color) would you recommend? After that how should the muscles themselves be painted or could I get away with drawing them with colored sharpies and then covering it all in a gloss coat or should it be painted as well? And lastly, what should I do to fill in the carved lines and sculpted wrinkles? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Creating a peaked hood/collar

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I need a bit of help turning a visual to life and I can't quite figure out the geometry.

I'm cosplaying as the Flatwoods Monster and am at the point of making its fabulous spade-shaped head. I decided for this iteration it should look kind of like a shallow hood, curving around the back of the head but then extending up to the point rather than coming forwards to cover the top of the head, and have a big bit of stiff black felt for this purpose. I just cannot visualise how to properly cut/fold/stitch it to get the three dimensional shape. Any pointers? When I try searching for 'peaked' or 'pointed' hoods I get adorable pixie hats, which isn't quite what I'm after - it would be more like an Elizabethan standing ruff, but cupping the back of the skull instead of standing straight.

Image for reference, not my illustration!

Armor NEED HELP

• Upvotes

Hi! So i just got this wolverine cowl 3d printed for me, using magnets to hold the wings/eye pieces together! However it seems the magnets connection to each other is weak and the pieces tend to fall off. The magnets are already glued in place! I'm very new to this and would love some advice or help on what to do to make it solid as a rock when I move around!
