How To Do A Chance Me And Improve Your Chances

The submission template for /r/ChanceMe contains a since-deleted post about how to do a ChanceMe, so I thought it would be good to cover this and replace that dead link.

Tips for a Good Chance Me Post:

1. Do Some Research. Start with the /r/ChanceMe wiki and the college's Common Data Set. If you can't find it in that link, just Google it. These contain a treasure trove of information about the college and how they handle admissions and financial aid. This is the best place to see how your GPA, test scores, and other components stack up. It even lists how important each component is to the school's admissions process. Another great resource is the college's admissions website. Often this will include some helpful hints about how the school evaluates certain things or what they're looking for in applicants. For example, Penn's site even has in-depth explanations of how interviews are evaluated including sample mock interviews. (See the links at the bottom of this post for more). As another example, Notre Dame has a great explanation of the specific coursework they want and how they evaluate extracurricular activities. Finally, you can search through /r/CollegeResults and /r/ApplyingToCollege for examples of admitted and rejected students. This can give you actual data points to consider for comparison. Keep in mind that students with high stats and poor essays/LORs are likely to be "inexplicably" rejected, so don't put too much stock into any single example.

2. Include enough information for us to chance you accurately, but don't write down every little activity or personal quality. If you have a lot of stats/info about yourself, do not put down everything; it makes it harder to read through your post. Include the ECs you've devoted the most time to/have leadership positions in. By only including stuff that moves the needle, you'll get more responses and better feedback.

3. Have a descriptive title. Writing "Chance me!" is a little obvious and unnecessary. Instead, include some of the schools you're applying to and your intended major. Example: "Chances for English Major: Ivies & Top Publics" -or- "Engineering Chances for GT, VT, and MIT." This makes it easier for those of us chancing you.

4. Make it organized. Please, try to format to the best of your ability. A wall of unformatted text makes it a lot more difficult to read. It would be great if you could break it up into bulleted sections and bold them. Here's a template:

Demographics: Gender, race/ethnicity, state, type of school, and hooks (URM, first generation, legacy, athlete, etc.)

Intended Major(s):

ACT/SAT/SAT II:

UW/W GPA and Rank:

Coursework: AP/IB/Dual Enrollment classes, AP/IB scores, etc

Awards:

Extracurriculars: Include leadership & summer activities

Essays/LORs/Other: Optionally, guess how strong these are and include any other relevant information or circumstances.

Schools: List of colleges, ED/EA/RD, etc

5. Remember that while /r/ChanceMe and other online forums can be helpful resources, they leave a lot to be desired. Usually they don't include review of every part of your application and they lack critical context about you and the rest of the applicant pool. On top of that, most respondents don't have much by way of real information or qualifications. Competitiveness along with online anonymity sometimes drive people to be downright toxic. You will be spending 4+ of the most formative and impactful years of your life and six figures of someone's money on college, so you need good information for making that decision. You want to make it count and do your best. Don't blindly trust random strangers on the internet or take their feedback as gospel truth. Be willing to respond to comments and have a productive conversation without taking criticism personally.

Tips For Responding To ChanceMe Posts

1. Try to evaluate the post in the context of each college listed. How does it stack up against the 25/75 percentiles for test scores?. Roughly, if it's in the 40th percentile or lower, it's a reach. If it's in the 40th-80th percentile it's a match. And if it's in the 80th+ it's a safety. But those percentiles should be tweaked for fit, risk tolerance, and applicant strength outside of stats. Finally, and this is the important part, assess their chances in the context of each school's overall acceptance rate. If the stats are at the 25th percentile, but the school admits ~95% of applicants, they're probably getting in even though they're on the low end. If they admit ~4% of applicants, it's going to be a long shot no matter how strong they are. If a school has an admit rate below 20% it's basically a reach for everyone. Yes, this means College of the Ozarks is a reach for you. Edward Fiske calls these "wildcards" because with rates that low, it's really hard to predict. If a school admits 95% of applicants (e.g. University of the Ozarks), then it's basically a safety for anyone who can academically qualify.

2. Understand what your evaluation means - and what it doesn't. Many students tend to either be cocky and overconfident or cynical and self-deprecating. One of the highest value outcomes of posting on /r/ChanceMe is that it will help students assess where they fall on this spectrum. Even when odds are low, it can be worth applying to a few targeted reaches. Every year there are students who get into a school they considered a massive reach. As long as applicants have some match and safety schools, it's ok and even encouraged to have some reaches on the list. At the same time, don't think that someone is a shoe-in for highly selective schools just because they have strong stats.

3. Remember the human. These are real people posting their life-to-date achievements on an anonymous forum and asking for feedback. Don't bluster, pontificate, or overstate your knowledge and expertise. Don't denigrate, harass, or disrespect people, even if they rub you the wrong way. Be nice and follow the rules and Reddiquette.

How To Improve Your Chances

Ok, now that you have a list of safety, match, and reach schools, what can you do to maximize your chances? There's a lot that goes into a quality application, so you need to address every component.

1. Find Resources. Check out the /r/ApplyingToCollege community. You'll learn a lot and there are several really knowledgeable people who are happy to help and answer questions. Take a look at the Khan Academy courses on the SAT and college admissions (these are free). Go talk to your guidance counselor about your plans for life, course schedule, and college admissions.

2. Explore your passions. Don't just let the status quo of organizations in your high school limit you. You won't stand out by participating in the same activities as every other student. Instead, look for ways to pursue your passions that go above and beyond the ordinary. As an example, you can check out this advice I gave a student who was asking if he should continue piano despite not winning major awards in it:

"Do you love it?

If it's a passion of yours, then never quit no matter how many people are better than you. The point is to show that you pursue things you love, not to be better at piano than everyone else.

If it's a grind and you hate it, then try to find something else that inspires you.

If it's really a passion, then you can continue to pursue it confidently because you don't have to be the best pianist in the world to love piano. If it's not, then you're probably better off focusing on what you truly love. Take a look at what Notre Dame's admissions site says about activities:

"Extracurricular activities? More like passions.

World-class pianists. Well-rounded senior class leaders. Dedicated artists. Our most competitive applicants are more than just students—they are creative intellectuals, passionate people with multiple interests. Above all else, they are involved—in the classroom, in the community, and in the relentless pursuit of truth."

The point isn't that you're the best. The point is that you're involved and engaged. If you continue with piano and hate it and plod along reluctantly, you won't fit this description at all. But if you love it and fling yourself into it, then you don't need an award to prove your love.

Consider other ways you could explore piano and deepen your love for it. Could you start a YouTube channel or blog? Play at local bars/restaurants/hotels? Do wedding gigs or perform pro bono at nursing homes/hospitals? Start a piano club at school or in the community (or join an existing one)? Start composing or recording your own music? Form a band or group to play with? Teach piano to others? Write and publish an ebook? Learn to tune, repair, or build pianos? Play at a church or community event venue? Combine your passion for piano with some other passion in your life?

The point is that all of that stuff could show that piano is important to you and that you're a "creative intellectual with a passionate interest". But none of it requires that you be the best according to some soulless judge."

3. Focus on getting strong grades in a challenging courseload. You should take the most challenging set of courses you are capable of excelling in and ideally the most challenging courses your school offers. To get in to top colleges you will need both strong classes and strong grades. Most schools come right out and say that the high school transcript is the single most important component of their review. If a student doesn't show an ability to handle top level academics, they just aren't a good fit for their school. If you are facing a quandary about what class to take or what classes to focus your efforts on, prioritize core classes. These include English, math, science, social science, and foreign language. Load up on honors/AP/IB/Dual Enrollment courses in these disciplines and your transcript will shine.

4. For standardized tests, you should start with the PSAT. If you are a top student and rising junior, it is absolutely worth studying like crazy to become a National Merit Finalist. This is awarded to the top ~1% of scorers by state and confers many benefits including a laundry list of full ride scholarship options. Even if you are not at that level, it will help prepare you for the ACT or SAT. I highly recommend that you take a practice test of both the ACT and SAT. Some students do better on one than the other or find one to more naturally align with their style of thinking. Once you discover which is better for you, focus in on it. You will likely want to take a course (if you're undisciplined) or get a book (if you have the self-control and motivation to complete it on your own). If you're looking for good prep books I recommend Princeton Review because they are both comprehensive and approachable. Which ever test you decide to focus on, you should plan to take it at least twice since most students improve their score on a second sitting. If you can't afford a test prep book, your local library or guidance counselor may have one you can use for free. There are other resources available at Khan Academy, /r/ACT, and /r/SAT.

5. Letters of Recommendation. Intentionally consider your letters of recommendation. You want to choose a teacher who knows you well and likes you a lot, but will also work hard on it and make it unique, detailed, specific, and glowing. You don't want to pick the lazy teacher who just shows videos once a week for class. They're quite likely to just copy and paste their LOR template and that won't really help you. If you don't have a teacher that you feel close to, don't wait too late to start developing a deeper relationship with one. Pick one and stay after class or arrive early to talk about your future. Ask for advice, inquire about their experience, etc. This will show your maturity and deepen your relationship with them quickly. Focus on actually building a relationship rather than flattering them or manipulating them into giving you a good recommendation because that's unlikely to work and will be pretty transparent.

6. Essays. You should start thinking about your college admission essays your junior year. Many students, even top students and great academic writers, find it really challenging to write about themselves in a meaningful and compelling way. They end up writing the same platitudes, cliches, and tropes as every other top student. I've written several essay guides that I (obviously) highly recommend as a good starting place for learning how to write about yourself (linked below, but you can also find them in my profile). Other great resources include The College Essay Guy, ThisIBelieve, and Hack The College Essay. Read through these and start drafting some rough attempts at some of the common app prompts. These will probably be terrible and just get discarded, but practicing can really help you learn to be a better writer.

GUY APPLYING ED TO UPENN NURSING ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️🚨🚨🚨

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m applying ED to UPenn Nursing this year and wanted to get some opinions on my chances. I know Penn is a reach for pretty much everyone, but I’m curious where I stand, especially since nursing has a smaller applicant pool. Any feedback would be appreciated!
Demographics
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian (Singaporean Indian)
State: Pennsylvania (Philly)
School: Public high school
Household income: ~$300k/year
Intended major: Nursing (BSN)
Application: UPenn Early Decision
Academics
Unweighted GPA: 3.95/4.0
Weighted GPA: 6.05 (my school uses a weird weighted scale)
SAT: 1480 (760 Math, 720 Reading & Writing)
APs completed: 4

AP Biology: 4
AP Chemistry: 5
AP World History: 5
AP English Language: 5
Senior-year APs: AP Government, AP Literature, AP French, AP Statistics
Honors / Awards
AP Scholar with Distinction — National
National Merit Commended Student — National
Honor Roll — School (9th–12th grade)
Extracurriculars (Common App Order)
1. Hospital Volunteer
Volunteered 350+ hours across the ICU, oncology, and rehabilitation departments. Built connections with patients, prepared and delivered supplies, and supported nursing staff.
2. White Blood Cell Chemotaxis Research
Investigated how different stimuli affect white blood cell chemotaxis speeds to wound sites under PhD supervision. Presented findings at a regional science conference.
3. Lifeguard & Swim Instructor
Supervised 50+ swimmers daily and taught 70+ children swimming and water safety. Built confidence and stayed prepared for emergencies.
4. Astrobiology / Origins of Life Research
Conducted an independent research study modeling electrochemical gradients in the subsurface oceans of icy moons to investigate the origins of life.
5. Cancer Research Program
Explored cancer care, diagnostics, and therapies through a Wake Forest program. Conducted independent literature research and presented a final capstone.
6. Mixed Martial Arts
Dedicated 9+ years to BJJ, Muay Thai, and kickboxing. Competed in fights, underwent intense training and conditioning, and learned to adapt in difficult conditions.
7. Fantasy Worldbuilding - Personal Project
Spent 5+ years developing an original fantasy world with intricate geography, weather patterns, ecosystems, magic systems, distinct cultures, and civilizations.
8. Music - Flute & Piano
Played flute and piano for 8+ years. Taught myself advanced techniques and challenging pieces and performed at local cultural events and celebrations.
Essays
My Common App essay is about the fantasy world and how I slowly started appreciating the smaller details and stories within it. I connected that to volunteering and how I’ve come to appreciate the little things about the people I meet.
Final Thoughts
I’m mostly wondering how I stack up against other Penn Nursing applicants. I’m a little worried about my SAT, but I’m hoping my GPA and extracurriculars can make up for it.
Also curious if being a male applicant to nursing makes any difference, since I know it’s a pretty female-dominated field.
Would love to hear what you guys think! Please be honest!

Chance an Asian female for T20s/Ivies (bio/stats + art) — realistic feedback appreciated

Currently a sophomore, so this is the ideal profile I'm aiming for by senior year, not my current application. Curious how competitive it would be and whether I'm aiming too high. I know planning everything out this far in advance probably comes across as a little robotic or overly calculated... but I've honestly been really nervous about college apps

Demographics: Asian female, competitive public HS in Northeast

Intended Major: Computational Biology / Statistics / Biology (possibly premed)

Academics:

  • GPA: ~3.9 UW / 4.6 W
  • SAT: 1550–1560
  • Coursework: 13–14 APs, mostly 5s, near-max rigor
  • Mostly As/A-s, possibly one B+ in Lang
  • Highest math: Multivariable Calculus
  • Submitting a supplemental art portfolio where accepted

Ecs:

  1. University research internship: Conducted computational biology research with university researchers, contributing to a first-author publication in a biomedical journal.
  2. University research internship (paid): Conducted more computational/biomedical research, contributing to a research publication and working on independent projects.
  3. Summer wet-lab research: Conducted experimental biology research at a university lab, contributing to an independent research project.
  4. President of arts nonprofit: Led free art education programs, inclusive classes for children with disabilities, and community donations. Coordinated school and community partnerships, reaching 100+ students.
  5. Competitive athlete (niche sport): Varsity starter and team captain (3 yrs), competed nationally, including at major junior championships.
  6. Biology Club President: Organized USABO preparation, peer tutoring, and biology enrichment activities.
  7. Digital artist/content creator: Created art tutorials and educational content, built an online audience, and developed a digital art portfolio.
  8. Church volunteering: Helped organize weekly services and community activities, and taught younger children during summer programs.
  9. Art/health outreach: Created and donated educational artwork for hospitals, schools, and community organizations.

Awards:

  1. USABO Semifinalist, Top 125/225 recognition
  2. 2x AIME qualifier
  3. Research publication/conference paper
  4. Scholastic Art regional Gold Keys / National Medals
  5. Additional science/art awards

Schools:

ED: UPenn, Duke, Cornell, Northwestern (deciding between these)

ED2: WashU, JHU, UChicago, Emory

RD: Other Ivies/T20s, plus targets and safeties

Questions:

I'm worried my application might look like the stereotypical Asian STEM applicant with research, Olympiads, and high stats. Does my involvement in art and community service help differentiate me, or is my overall profile still fairly generic?

Assuming I achieve most of this, am I realistically competitive for Penn, Duke, Cornell, Northwestern, and similar schools? What would be the biggest weaknesses in my application?

I also have access to art resources and mentorship, so I'm considering putting more time into Scholastic Art competitions. Does anyone know how much more impressive a National Gold/Silver Medal is compared to regional Gold Keys, especially for someone not applying as an art major? Would pursuing national recognition be a good use of my time given my other STEM activities, or would I be better off focusing on research and science competitions?

Would appreciate realistic feedback!

Chance a broke post soviet union country girlll

• Upvotes

Demographics: Female, white (romani/jewish), Hungarian, capital city, public vocational HS + private US HS (i’ll explain below), first generation in college and in HS, disabled, low income, I speak 3 languages (fluent: Hungarian, English, intermediate: Greek)

High school situation: I graduated (2025) from a public vocational HS where I received a regular HS diploma and a vocational certificate in accounting. After graduation I won a scholarship to receive a US HS diploma at a private catholic HS in rural CT. I started that school as a Junior but I had to leave in October this year due to temporary health issues. Right now I’m finishing the US HS diploma through Penn Foster.

Intended Major(s): Economics and Business

ACT/SAT/SAT II: I didn’t take any of them due to said health issues that was diagnosed during summer but I’m going to submit National leaving exam scores instead.

National Leaving exam scores:
Hungarian lit/gram: 91%
History: 94%
Math (advanced): 97%
English (advanced): 90%
Basics of Economics (advanced): 98%

UW/W GPA and Rank:
Vocational HS - 4.9 out of 5
US HS - 3.88
Neither of my schools have ranking

Coursework:
I took AP in Math, English and Economics but it’s only reflected in my National leaving exam scores.
At my US HS I didn’t take any AP because my vocabulary was lacking back then.

Honors:
Vocational HS:
9th - General commendation from the teaching staff for outstanding academic achievement
10th - General commendation from the teaching staff for outstanding academic achievement, Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Competition Results
11th - General commendation from the teaching staff for outstanding academic achievement
12th - General commendation from the teaching staff for outstanding academic achievement
The general commendation is the highest avaiable in my school’s system.

US HS:
11th - First Honors, Certificate of excellence in Religion, Chemistry, Earth Science, American Literature, Health, Geometry

Awards:
-Immerse education essay competition - merit award (International)
-International Jewish heritage research comp - 2nd place
-International Art show winner
-National Innovation challenge competition - Best business model
-National Financial Junior competition - 3rd place

-National student barista comp - 1st place + group leader
-National essay competition - Top 10
-National Sustainability comp - 1st place + group leader
-National Innovation challenge - Sustainability/STEM award
-Halo Awards - Best sound design/execution nomination
I have a few other awards in art/writing but I’m not sure if I should include them because they don’t really fit my profile I think?? I have written a lot so thank you for reading all that😭🙏

Extracurriculars: Include leadership & summer activities
-I have been working at my Dad’s workplace since 8th grade (paid)/8-9 hours a week
-I have worked at my US HS’s Development office (paid)/roughly 20 hours a week
-I did nail modeling/designing from 9th to 12th grade
-I started and managed an AI related business in construction (it’s pretty small but I have already made some money with it ~$1000)
-Recreational figure skating 2022-2024
-I have been doing digital and traditional art and I have wo competitions 2020-recent
-I have written short stories & poems that have been published online & physically 2018-recent
-I don’t think if this counts as an extracurricular but I actively search to challenge myself throughout my HS years in different things out of my comfort zone e.g the barista and diplomacy competition
-I was one of the three soundmasters in both of my US HS’s drama club Junior year

Essays:
I feel like that my essays are the biggest weakness, I think that they’re pretty 7-8/10, my personal statement is about how nail designing and hand modeling became an important part of my personality and how it started just as a stress relief method.

LORs:
I chose to get recs from my Hungarian HS teachers because they know me better (4 years vs 1).
-I chose my Hungarian HS’s Principal as a counselor rec, idk, at first she didn’t really like me but after a while she became proud of my achievements and supported me.
-Teacher rec 1: my basics of economics teacher, he was my favourite teacher, he was the one helping me find my path, he adores me so I’m sure he’ll send something really good
-Teacher rec 2: english teacher, she was my homeroom teacher during all four years, she gave me a lot of support through the years so I think she’s also going to be good
-Other rec: I asked my boss at my father’s workplace, he’s pretty good at writing so I don’t worry at all

Other:
-I have scoliosis that I have to maintain by spending around 5 hours each week on physical therapy
-I take care of my maternal grandparents regarding shopping, cleaning, handling personal matters
-I won a scholarship to the most prestigious college prep school in my country and I attended it during 12th grade and through it received the US HS diploma scholarship

Schools: List of colleges, ED/EA/RD, etc
-Harvard REA
So I’m pretty torn between Harvard REA and RD because I feel like that my application is not good enough and could be improved (I’m waiting for one award and multiple competition results/publications that I will receive after Nov 1st) but I’m afraid that I will get rejected RD due to the bigger pool of applicants.

Thank you so so much in advance for any good advice about any part of my application!

Chances of getting accepted to USC, Spelman, Howard, FAMU, and UM (Junior, California native living in Texas)

Hey everyone! I’m currently a junior in high school in Texas, but I’m originally from California and moved to Texas, so I’d love some honest advice about my college admissions chances, especially at out-of-state schools. My current GPA is a 3.5 unweighted and a 6.033 weighted (approximately a 4.1 on my school’s conversion scale). I scored a 5 on the AP World History exam, and I’m currently taking AP Lang, AP Biology, AP Psychology, College Algebra dual credit, and US History dual credit. I plan on taking dual-credit Precalculus over the summer before my senior year, followed by AP Chemistry, AP Literature, calculus, and earning my pharmacy technician certification during senior year. I currently work at Adidas, serve as Junior Vice President of Black Student Union, participate in all of my school’s honor societies except math, and am involved in Sports Medicine. I also volunteer at a science resource center and plan to reach 100 volunteer hours. I’m looking for a medical or research internship and am starting my own nonprofit focused on women’s health and community outreach. My long-term goal is to become an OB-GYN, and I’m interested in neuroscience, biology, or another science-related major before medical school.
My top schools are USC (my dream school!), FAMU, Howard, Spelman, the University of Miami, and UC Berkeley. I’d appreciate feedback on my chances at each school and whether you’d consider them reaches, targets, or likely schools for me. I’m also wondering how much my leadership, work experience, volunteering, AP score, and dual-credit coursework could help balance my GPA. What SAT score should I aim for to be competitive at these schools, and would a medical internship or developing my nonprofit further make a bigger impact? I want to show academic growth before applying and make the most of my remaining time in high school. I’m open to constructive criticism, so please be honest! Thank you!! 💗

Interviewed a Stanford + UC admissions officer/reader for internal insight and built an 85% accurate essay reviewer with the info.

Most essay AIs are genuinely fucking useless. They rewrite your whole draft into chatgpt mush or they glaze every sentence and tell you its fire.

so i interviewed a Stanford + UC admissions officer/reader and used that to build one. 85% accurate according to our internal research. tells you exactly where to fix your essay if you actually want a shot at your dream school. wont rewrite it for you. one free review.

Here's the link for if you're interested: https://aristoscholars.com/essays/AI

chance me for washu ed

4.10 gpa weighted (it's a funky system where we don't have AP classes and honors only give you 0.3). in reality i had a b+ first sem in alg2trig and a b second sem (9th grade) and then the sporadic a- here and there.

SAT 1510 (760 RW 750 M). National Merit semi (1490--750RW7 50M)

For EC i volunteer at my synagoge and at a local hospital, prez of jewish youth group chapter, employed at local bookstore, xc team.

not applying for aid.

attend a really elite bay area private school where since 2021 4 people have been accepted to washu each year. however while i am national merit so are 13 other people in my class of 88 kids (it's really hardcore)

Want to do premed but didn't indicate that on form bc counselor said quotas. applied as public health but in practice undecided

please help!

i submitted ED already but i'm scared...
