Discussion is ram the only issue when a building pc rn?

So basically i really want to build a pc, i do have a gaming laptop so i wont rush making the pc right away but one main thing i wanna know is if only ram was made hard to get for building a pc or are other parts hard and expensive to get too. I have no idea how building one works so id like to know abit of how the market is looking rn to at least make something decent, nothing extremely insane.

Build Upgrade 5700X → 5800X3D or just jump to AM5? (9070 16GB, 1440p + Quest 3)

Got a 5700X and a 9070 16GB. Mostly play at 1440p and do a fair bit of Quest 3 VR.
Is the 5800X3D still worth it as a last AM4 upgrade, or should I just move to AM5 at this point?
Curious what people would do in my situation

Discussion My PC was easy to build and surprisingly annoying to work on afterward

About a year and a half ago I spent weeks picking parts for my PC. Checked GPU clearance, cooler height, airflow, PSU wattage, basically every compatibility detail I could think of.

Last weekend I decided to add a second NVMe drive.

The free M.2 slot is underneath my graphics card. Fine, remove the GPU. Except the PCIe latch is almost impossible to reach with the CPU cooler installed, and I have to take off the GPU support bracket first.

Eventually got everything out, installed the drive, and put it back together. Then figured I might as well clean the dust filters while I was down there.

Turns out the bottom filter only slides out from the back, which means pulling the entire tower out from under my desk. Naturally, I'd made the cables exactly long enough to reach.

None of this is a disaster. It's just funny that I spent so much time thinking about how the parts would go IN and almost none thinking about how I'd get to them again.

Next time I build, easy access to storage, filters and cables is going on my list alongside airflow and temperatures.

Do you actually consider how easy a build will be to maintain and upgrade, or is that something you only appreciate after living with it?

Troubleshooting I'm Tech support, Stumped

Naturally, as I think that the majority of us are in this subreddit, I am tech support for all my friends; However, recently I have had my first "unsolved" mystery...

My buddies computer failed to post. So he calls me up and asks me to help him, the first thing I made him do was re-seat the RAM naturally, and then check single sticks. as that seems to be the quickest thing to cause any issue. Then I realized that we were working with a solid white VGA LED. So naturally, we try some Graphics card Debugging, reseating it, unplugging connections from the power supply, and the Graphics Card, plugging them back in etc. Plugging it into a separate PCIe slot.

Also notable is that he has no NVME Storage devices. He only has a 2.5' SATA SSD. I also had no means to a spare Graphics card, Spare PC etc. So I was not able to verify that the Card hadn't died. I also tried the "turn it on, unplug video outs, turn it off, turn it on, turn it off, plug video outputs back in and then turn it on" trick, that didn't do anything. Now I am wondering if it's a BIOS issue. We did reset CMOS by Bridging JBAT1. Didn't work, I am going to flash it, but I obviously can't get it to post.

Finally, after I was at my wits end, he tells me that he had the computer on over night, and then it just turned itself off and now won't post. So now I'm straying towards a potential Power Supply failing issue. This seems most likely, but I don't think he want's to go down a "Fix It" rabbit hole...

We are working with system specs of -

CPU: i7 10700k

RAM: Vengeance 32gb kit (2x16) 3200 cl16

Graphics Card: RTX 3080 Founders edition

MB: MSI MPG z490 Gaming Plus

Power Supply: RM850e (I Don't know what year, but I do know that it's new enough to have those braided style cables)

All In one water cooling, don't know the brand, and case looked like a h7 flow.

Any ideas that could help would be awesome, otherwise I guess I'll tell him to take it to someone :'(.

The only reason this upsets me is because I've never came across a computer issue that I wasn't able to troubleshoot and this would be my first one. I don't want a loss on my record.

Build Upgrade Cheaper to max out AM4 platform or buy mid-tier AM5 Microcenter bundle?

Hi all,

My brother's PC is (imo) adequate-ish with managing of settings, but according to him, he wants to upgrade soon for new games like the recently released Modern Warfare 4 and potentially GTA 6 if the rumors of Q1 2027 are to be believed. Either way, I think he'd most benefit from a better CPU and GPU. As far as GPU goes, he will have to find a deal on one at some point, but that can be kicked down the road as a separate purchase.

For CPU, I'm not fully sure which path is best to take from the current specs and prices:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

4x8 Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO SL DDR4-3600 for total 32GB

EVGA RTX 3070 Ti XC3

2TB NVMe + some 500GB-1TB SATA SSDs

EVGA 750GQ Gold

Dual 1080p 165Hz monitors

Basically, I think he could buy a 5800X3D for roughly $300-350 to max out this (surely?) dead platform and get 2-4 more years out of it, or buy the cheapest Microcenter AM5 CPU/Mobo/RAM bundle for $400. The only issue is that that bundle has a 6 core 7500X3D with mATX and 1x16GB DDR5. I'm sure he can offset some costs by selling off his old CPU/Mobo/RAM, which can be used to buy another stick or a whole new 32GB DDR5-6000 kit and selling that one stick.

Is that 7500X3D worth getting as an upgrade over the 5600X and for the future socket upgradability? Will the 3D V-Cache bring his fps up at 1080p enough to run decently? After reselling old parts, he should be better off just having the same core count but with newer architecture + 3D V-Cache and upgrade path rather than maxing out the AM4 socket with a 5800X3D for marginal cost difference of $50-100-ish and no available future upgrades, right?

The GPU will need to be done at some point later regardless of the CPU platform, so we'll decide on a decent AMD GPU later.

Thanks.

Build Help RX 9060 XT 16GB vs RX 9070 GRE 12GB for $50 more — can my EVGA 650 BQ handle the GRE?

Hey everyone,
I recently bought a PowerColor RX 9060 XT 16GB from Micro Center for $499.99, but I’m considering returning it and exchanging it for the PowerColor RX 9070 GRE Reaper 12GB, which is $549.99 at my store.

The GRE is only $50 more, and I’ve seen people say it’s significantly faster. However, I’m unsure whether it’s worth giving up 4GB of VRAM, and I want to make sure my current PSU can handle it before making a decision.

My current PC specs:
- CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
- GPU: PowerColor RX 9060 XT 16GB
- RAM: 32GB DDR4-3200
- PSU: EVGA 650 BQ 650W 80+ Bronze, semi-modular
- Motherboard: ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming 4
Resolution: 1080p currently, with a possible upgrade to 1440p in the future

The GPU I’m considering:
PowerColor RX 9070 GRE Reaper Triple-Fan 12GB
Micro Center’s listing specifies a recommended 650W PSU and 2 × 8-pin power connectors. My EVGA 650 BQ is rated for 650W, but I’m not sure whether it’s a good idea to run the GRE on it long-term or whether I should upgrade to a 750W PSU.

I mainly play Escape from Tarkov, including demanding maps like Streets, along with other games. I want good overall value and a GPU that will last through a future CPU/platform upgrade.

My questions:
1. Is the RX 9070 GRE worth exchanging my RX 9060 XT for at only $50 more?

  1. Is 12GB of VRAM enough for 1080p and eventually 1440p gaming, or would I benefit from keeping the 16GB card?

  2. Is my EVGA 650 BQ a reasonable PSU for the GRE, assuming it’s in good condition and has the required PCIe connectors?

  3. Would I need to buy a new 750W PSU, or would that be unnecessary spending?

  4. How much of a performance improvement should I realistically expect in games with my Ryzen 5 5600X?

I’m still within Micro Center’s return window, so I’d appreciate advice before making the decision. I’d rather make the right purchase now than regret it later.
Thanks!

Build Help GPU died, looking at two cards to replace it.

First off, I live in Canada, where availability and especially prices for parts is pretty poor. I'm upgrading from a 3050 8GB, play at 1080p (will go for supersampling if performance allows), and always try for high settings and framerates in mostly single player games. I don't care for raytracing, although a couple of newer titles I'm interested in require it.

My system has a 5800x (a little overkill for these cards, but I got it for $C230), 48GB of before-times RAM, and the biggest issue, I still play off of hard drives. Before-times-me never considered games would demand SSDs before he'd buy one large enough for games, I guess.

Also, haven't really looked at the used market, mostly for fear of getting a brick and ghosted.

With that out of the way, the two cards I'm looking at (13% sales tax included, prices accurate to time of posting) are the Arc B570 and the 9060XT, about $C500 and $C876 respectively.

There is also the bonus options of of the 9070GRE, which has one currently going for C$960, but feels like it'll fall out of my price comfort zone at any moment and the B580, which has units in stock starting at C$80 over the B570.

My biggest concerns are

  1. VRAM, 10GB vs 16GB. While trying to "futureproof" your system is kind of stupid "how long until 10GB of vram becomes not enough for 1080p?" is something that, with prices likely to never get better, keeps me thinking in circles.

  2. Drivers. Not really about stability, although I know Intel has been working on that, but more general experience (which I guess includes stability).

  3. The price delta. This is basically the whole point: is the 9060XT 16GB worth the extra ~C$400 over the B570, for native 1080p in modern AAA games?

This is the PCPP list I'm using to gather pricing and availability data. Thanks for any help and sorry for the long post and any grammar issues, posting from mobile.

Build Help I'm planning to build a new PC, and the question arose about choosing nvidia and amd

Hi everyone! I'm kinda new here. My pc is slowly dying, and my 1060 not handle any new games good :(
Which is why I started thinking about almost completely replacing the components in the near(i hope) future. I've decided on the memory and processor.
First guestion about cpu. I'm looking on r7 7800x3d. Is Gigabyte B650 UD AX good enough for this? I'm not planning on boosting memory, card or processor.
And second, main question about gpu. Long enough i planning to get rtx 5070, but due to ai problems in the world, and cuz my country is shittiest place in the world in last times, i've read a lot about the fact that it's not the most reasonable option to take a card from Nvidia right now, but it's better to take one from Amd. So i started to thinking about 9700xt. In my country it doesn't cost much more, but it has 16 GB of VRAM. I'm not really interested in dlss5 things and path tracing, but framegen might interest me cuz i heard that on last rtx cards it extremely imperceptible. So I can't figure out who I want to take the card from in the end.
In general, are there any obvious problems with amd cards? Or i can safely consider this option at the future? I'm considering on this card "PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Reaper", is it good?
Thanks for answers ^^

Build Help 3060ti ——> 9070 GRE

• Upvotes

Like the title shows I’m curious if it’s worth upgrading to a 9070 GRE I refuse to pay close to $1000 for a High end GPU. My current set up is 5800x, 3060ti, and 32gb DDR4. I found a 9070 GRE for msrp at my local microcenter and I know it’s impossible to get anything close to msrp with the current market. Advice?

Build Help First PC build.

So as the title would suggest, this will be my first PC build. I've scoured this sub and all the questions seem specific so I figured I'd ask my own.

I know....honestly nothing of PCs other than ELI5 basics. I've been an xbox gamer my whole life so this is all new to me but I'm looking at building my pc, google "what parts are required"-CPU okay great I knew that, now lets check microcenter. Look at CPUs and might as well be reading giberish. I have gleaned from this sub that "Clock speed isn't the same across the board just because it's the same Ghz", "More cores doesn't mean better" and "AMD is the best choice for gaming right now".

All that said I do plan on going with AMD unless y'all suggest otherwise but WHAT should I go for? My budget is lets say $1,800 and I want something I won't have to upgrade for a few years.

Also while this is about CPUs if y'all want to lowkey help me build with ideas of not only what is compatible but what's actually good that would be much much appreciated. Thank you all in advance

TL;DR: Never built PC, break down how to understand what makes a CPU fast and how to ultimately build a fast gaming rig for $1,800

Build Upgrade Help! I'm buying a DDR5 RAM kit and I don't know if it's legit

Hi! I found a pretty good deal for a ddr5 kingston set, and tomorrow I meet the guy I'm buying from. We're meeting in a parking lot so I don't have any way to test the kit beforehand. I have these screenshots from him and I want to know if it's actually legit, since AI signaled me some problems with the serial number and the tRC on XMP-6000. Here are the screenshots he sent me:

Edit: I'm going to buy them. I will come back with results.

Build Upgrade 9070 XT Pulse - Coil Whine and price went up

built the pc in octobre 2026

my build
CPU: ryzen 7 7800x3d
Mainboard: B850 Asus TUF Wifi Plus
RAM: 32gb ddr5 6000mhz cl30
Case: lancool 207 digital black
PSU: power zone 2 plat - 850w
SSD: 1tb 980 pro from my old build (still got a 990 pro 2tb with heatsink for 115€, but not sure if i should use or sell so my new is more "affordable" coz of ram prices)
GPU: 9070XT Saphire Pulse

bought the saphire pulse for 860€ in Austria/Europe. I am quite happy with the performance, but it has coil whine. Especially with high FPS games.

I still have 3 days to send it back via amazon - but they will only return the money, not a new card.

Also the prices of all gpus went up in the last 5 days or smthg? Just last week or so i saw 5080s for 1500-1800€, now most of them are 2k+
Same with the 9070XT for 1000€~ +-100€
5070 TI? Starts with almost 1,4k+

Should i just suck it up and keep it? Undervolt and hope for it to disappear?

:)

Build Upgrade Upgrade or Buy? Help a lost noob

Question: Is my PC upgradeable/ is it worth upgrading or should I plan on buying a newer one?

Context: I have always just gamed on PlayStation. My wife and I have been playing our PS4 for like 8 years, never felt the need to upgrade to a PS5 but we know we will upgrade to something eventually.

A friend gave me his old gaming pc that he was done with so I could get into sim racing. It was a prebuild from Cyberpower that he tinkered with. I have been driving on Assetto Corsa with a single monitor and the PC has done just fine. The only plan I had for my set up was going with triple monitors down the road.

I figure I could get the PC up to snuff and ditch the console. We play on a projector that we would upgrade too. We play a bit of everything but have spent days upon days on games like God of War, Elden Ring, Bloodborne, COD MW3 but also Hollow Knight, Death's Door and whatnot. Definitely don't care about having the most insane graphics. I mainly care about not being able to play a game because my PC can't handle it. I want the PC upgrade to be a longer term investment and not feel lacking in a couple years.

We will watch an occasional movie off of it but other than gaming that's it. I don't edit media, stream, or much of anything outside of very basic laptop usage.

PC Specs:

CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

GPU AMD Radeon RX 5700

SSD Samsung 850 Evo 500gb

SSD #2 Sandisk X300 256bg

Ram 32gb DDR4

Board Asrock B550AM

Power EVGA 600 watt Gold 80 Plus

Cooler Master A71C

Fans 3 Aprevia 120mm

Case Cyberpower H550

OS Windows 11

Monitor Dell S2721DGF

I have read different comparisons of what CPU and GPU would give the most similar performance to a PS5 Pro.

I read stuff about parts being too old to upgrade with the wrong ports and whatnot.

I put all of my components on the different sites but they just told me that my CPU and GPU were well balanced without bottlenecks.

Then my eyes crossed. Like I said, I have always been a spoon fed console boy, PC world is weird.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this!

Build Upgrade What should I upgrade when I’m on an extreme budget?

I bought a prebuilt in 2020 that has served me pretty well. I’ve been playing a lot of deadlock, but I’m averaging 50 fps with semi-frequent stutters. I am wanting to upgrade my PC slowly as I’m on a pretty extreme budget due to health issues that make me unable to work consistently. The specs are:

Motherboard: AsRock A320M
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100
GPU: Radeon RX 570
RAM: 32gb DDR4-3200
1gb hard drive + 250gb SSD

I guess technically my main question is what GPU should I look for. I’m thinking I need to find a cheap (ideally <$200) GPU, but I’m not sure which one would be a decent bump in performance for relatively cheap. I’m also thinking about purchasing a Ryzen 5 5500 from Amazon as it’s around $90.

The only upgrade I made to the pre build was buying the 32gb of RAM in 2021, so I’m wanting to stick with AM4 so I can take advantage of the RAM/avoid having to pay for the exorbitant prices of DDR5. Would it be worth it to upgrade my motherboard as well?

I also have a 75hz monitor and would like to get a better one and use the one I have as a secondary monitor. Not a huge priority as I don’t even get 75fps in deadlock with my current specs, but any suggestions for cheap monitors with a better refresh rate?

Build Upgrade Upgrade my 5800x to Ultra 5 250K+?

Hey all.

I have a 5800x with 32gb of RAM and a RTX 3080 10gb.

I recently noticed in Gears of War E-day, I'm pretty sure my CPU is a bottleneck as I've been getting some questionable performance, and my GPU isn't at 100% usage in game. Also, I've been doing a lot more hobby development work using Claude.

At first I considered a 5800X3d, but that's like $340 right now.

Now, my local microcenter, has a Ultra 5 250KF+ and 32gb of ram with a B860 motherboard for only $500. Sounds like a more worthy upgrade.

They also have an Ultra 7 270k+ combo with a z890 mobo for $630, so maybe that is worth the price premium?

Now I know the 1851 is essentially a dead socket right now, but these prices are soo much cheaper than the equivalent AM5 platform.

Troubleshooting Have I murdered my GPU?

I recently cleaned my custom built PC, as I have many times before. I used 70% isopropyl wipes (I know 99.9% would've been better but too late now), and a can of compress air. I then plugged it back in and turned it on almost immediately after cleaning like an idiot.

I must have messed it up and got water somewhere in the motherboard, because when I turned it on, a few things weren't working.

-The LEDs in ONLY my front intake fans weren't working, the fans were still spinning though.

-I was getting no video output on either of my display ports.

Everything else seemed to be working normally.

-Every other LED worked fine.

-All fans, including the ones in my GPU were spinning normally.

I then turned it back off, after about 30 seconds of letting my life choices sink in.

I came back tomorrow and hopefully tried it again. This time, as u flipped the PSU switch, I saw a flash coming from the IO panel. I then turned the PC on, only to get the same results.

My motherboard is replaceable within reason (B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2), but my GPU dying is another thing (RTX 4070). The complete lack of video output scares me to death, but the fans still work, so maaaaybbeeeee???

Anyone with more knowledge than me know if the no video output is a death sentence for my bank account, or if there is still hope?

P.S.

pls be gentle.

Build Upgrade Dusted off the old PC, need some advice

This was my gaming rig a few years ago and it served me well, but life got busy and I quit using it. I've recently gotten back to PC gaming, and I'm just curious if this system is still decent nowadays? Is it worth keeping and upgrading? Or would I be better off starting fresh?

I was going to attach a pic but it's saying that's not allowed so I'll type it out I guess.

GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super

RAM: 32GB DDR4 @2666 Gskill Trident

CPU: Intel core i5 8400 @ 2.8 ghz

I'm not looking for 4k or anything crazy, just 1080p on triple A games and the occasional shooter.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Gaming OC 8G Graphics Card, WINDFORCE 3X Cooling System, 8GB 256-bit GDDR6X, GV-N307TGAMING OC-8GD Video Card

I bought in 2022 finale succumbed to dog hair and overuse. So I am looking to replace.

Know very little about pc hardware, that’s why I copied the entire name from amazon as I don’t know what’s relevant.

I would like to not worry about replacing it for a few years and don’t like to think about game requirements.

Would like to stay below $1,000. Obviously cheaper is preferred but would rather spend money if it was worth the investment.

Suggestions?

Build Help Need advice. Building a gaming PC.

Hi all, I'm looking to build a gaming pc. I found out about microcenter in this sub and luckily for me, there's one about 40 mins away. I checked their website and saw a cpu+ram+motherboard bundle with a sale on a graphics card. I wanted to ask if this is a good deal and how this set up holds in 2026. I have attached a link to cart. Thanks in advance to all.
