NEWS An update from the moderation team 🎂

Hey everyone,

You may have noticed an increase in spam and bot accounts posting on r/birthday recently. A lot of these posts follow the same pattern, accounts pretending to celebrate a birthday while asking for upvotes, comments, or attention. These posts are not genuine birthday celebrations and can clutter up the community for people who are actually here to share their special day.

Until today, moderation on this subreddit for me was limited (and I am the only active mod), which made it difficult to properly deal with the amount of spam coming through. I was mainly able to remove posts, but the process was slow and difficult to keep up with.

The good news: I have now been granted full moderator permissions thanks to Reddit themselves, which means I can take a much more active role in keeping r/birthday clean, welcoming, and focused on real birthday posts. 🎉

Going forward, I’ll be:
Removing spam and bot generated posts more quickly
Taking action against repeat offenders
Improving moderation tools and filters where possible
Keeping the subreddit a place where genuine birthday celebrations can be shared

We are also looking for new moderators!

As r/birthday continues to grow, we would like to bring in more active members who are willing to help keep the subreddit friendly, clean, and spam free. If you are interested in becoming a moderator, please keep an eye out for a future mod application post or send us (me) a message through modmail.

A reminder to everyone: please continue reporting suspicious posts when you see them. Reports help us find spam faster and keep the community better for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck around and helped make r/birthday a fun place. Let’s keep celebrating real birthdays! 🎂

I turned 46 today. Normally I underplay the heck out of my birthday, but my wife very firmly reminded me that I deserve kindness and celebration. Therefore, I am leaning into this, because I am nothing if not literal (it's the 'tism). So, feel free to wish me happy things!

19 years old today

First time I haven't had anything to open. Hope I can get a job soon. Being a family of 3 with a dog living paycheck to paycheck doesn't leave room for gifts, especially when only 1 person has a job. This is a real strong contender for worst birthday, other one was my 16th spent in a motel 6 with a cookie cake. This time I actually have a place to live but having absolutely nothing is really soul crushing.

minor Birthday betrayal

• Upvotes

My birthday is in two days and I just found out my best friend decided to go to the mall with her friends on my birthday instead of going with me. So I'm doing it with just my sister. We're gonna be in the same exact space btw as if it couldn't get any worse. This feels horrible like I'm being betrayed. She's saying "Oh you're going with your family it will be fun right?" like she doesn't know she's the only person in my friend group who could come and I really wanted her to come.

I understand her because she said it's the only time she can hang out with them but I also don't because it's my birthday. And she knows how important it was for me for her to come

There seems to be mostly old people in this subreddit but if you've ever gone through something like this I'd like advice

Special! The dusk of another Birthday's Eve...

I turn 32 tomorrow... I've never met one person my entire life that cared for me the way I cared for them. That would/would have said or done the things for me that I did/would them. I don't think I ever will. I'm the oldest living member of my family, and I'm so lonely. Everybody complains about not feeling needed. Everyone that's stepped into my life has made it obvious I was only around because I was beneficial in some fashion... Such is life... One time I just want to know what it's to feel wanted. Someone reaching out to check on me, instead of asking how I can help them. I'm glad my presence grants security to those around me. I'm a provider my actions will always go unacknowledged. But will I ever know what it feels like to be someone's satisfaction instead of their security? My heart breaks a little more yearning for this every day... I miss you Mother</3.

Birthday Boss

I work in a small office with only 10 employees, and I’ve been here for four years. Believe it or not, my boss still doesn’t even know my name. He constantly calls me by someone else’s name.
The woman who used to handle HR retired, and a new woman joined the company. Let’s call her Rox.
When our boss’s birthday was approaching, an employee who has worked here for over 20 years, let’s call him Peter, decided to organize a gift and collect money from everyone.
According to Peter, buying gifts for the boss on his birthday and Christmas has always been a company tradition, and we are expected to keep it going.
Rox doesn’t like Peter, so she refused to contribute. Two other new employees didn’t contribute either, which created tension between them. Rox bought her own cake and decorations, while Peter purchased a pair of red sneakers for the boss. Nobody really liked the gift, but no one suggested anything else.
The whole situation became ridiculous because Rox wanted everyone to contribute to the party she was organizing instead of Peter’s gift.
Here’s where things get worse. Peter sent us an email that felt like a threat, implying that if we didn’t contribute, the boss would find out and we might lose our Christmas bonuses. For context, our boss usually gives us a bonus equivalent to one week’s paycheck.
Honestly, I felt pressured to contribute. Our boss hasn’t given us a raise in four years, yet we’re expected to spend our own money buying him presents.
There are four employees who constantly kiss up to the boss, including Peter and Rox. They seem desperate to stay on his good side.
The irony is that our boss is extremely wealthy. He has so much money that the gifts we buy him often become a joke. On top of that, he’s the kind of person who constantly talks badly about his own employees, creating a pretty toxic work environment.
Personally, I try to keep a low profile, stay out of office politics, do my job, and go home. I don’t want to be involved in this unnecessary drama.
What bothers me most is that we’re expected to show appreciation to a boss who doesn’t even bother learning my name after four years, hasn’t given us raises, and regularly criticizes his employees.
Now Christmas is approaching, and I can already imagine the same drama starting all over again.
Am I wrong for thinking employees shouldn’t feel pressured to buy gifts for a wealthy boss, especially when their year-end bonuses seem to be used as leverage?

It's my birthday!!!

It has been a very rough couple months. My grandma died, my cat died 2 days ago, I lost the funding for my housing and could very well be homeless come Saturday... but today is my day! Today I celebrate surviving, getting through, never giving up.

P.S. Happy birthday to all my birthday twins.

Is it just me or with time you don't feel like celebrating ? Or it feels absurd one day everyone treats you special ,gives attention and the next day you're again back to being invisible? ,but anyways i hope everyone here has an amazing 🫶🏼
