Discussion I wanted to give some advice for cleaning very moldy tapes

I'm not sure if this is okay here, but I wanted to give some advice from my experiences in cleaning severely moldy and sticky tapes, and some huge do's and don't's I've encountered when watching other's videos on the matter. Pretty much in the hopes of helping people who preserve tapes, and are not familiar with cleaning really moldy tapes.

Do's:

  1. I really recommend one of those tape cleaners, like the tape saver you may see online. The mechanism is pretty useful especially to do quick passes after you do a careful manual first pass. I will however, condemn the cleaning pads they usually use for these machines, they're extremely destructive and I will go into it later in the don't's section.
  2. Do multiple passes and clean both top and bottom of the reels. Mold doesn't only sit on the top of the tape, it sometimes penetrates pretty deeply. Once you've unstuck the tapes and cleaned the reels, you may need to do multiple passes on each side of the tape to get rid of the mold. Sometimes it's taken my 5-6 passes before I see nothing on the cleaning cloth. By then the tape is really clean.
  3. Use isopropyl alcohol with the least water content. You absolutely need to use some sort of solvent to clean the mold, as trying to clean it dry can cause a lot of friction and damage the tape. Also the alcohol evaporates quickly, allowing you to clean quicker, and the moisture doesn't get left behind creating more mold later. Moisture is an enemyof VHS tapes.

Don't's:

  1. DO NOT use paper or towels to clean tapes. I've seen many who've used them with extremely mixed results, leaning more towards failure. These leave lots of lint on the tapes which covers the magnetic portion of the tape and also gums up the VCR heads. I recommend strictly lint free cloths, like the kind you clean your glasses with. They go for pretty cheap online for a bunch. I can't stress enough that you need to go lint free.
  2. I've also seen videos where the person would lift up the top plastic of the reel to remove a huge portion of the mold on top of the tape. This is also pretty destructive method in my opinion as it can potentially deform the reel and cause playback issues, I've run into that as well. It's best to take your time and unwind the entire tape, put it in between a lint free cloth and clean the mold from there. When the reel is empty then you clean the reel gently from top to bottom.
  3. When using a mechanical tape cleaner, you should be vary wary on the first pass. I've run into tapes that are so sticky due to mold that when you use these mechanical cleaners they tear when they get stuck. At worst go on the lowest possible speed or put the reels on the spindles and spin them manually by hand. Especially if it's a precious tape you want to preserve. Once you unwind each end completely and ensure the tape is sufficiently unstuck you can go quickly with the machine.
  4. Do not clean tapes and leave them for months on end. You should clean the tapes and aim to capture them as soon as possible. Cleaning these tapes isn't exactly a perfect process, and sometimes a bit rough on the tape and there's always the risk of leaving some bit of moisture behind. Try to capture as soon as you can.

Collection Waited 3 months to buy this spinning display.

Each month I go to a local flea market to buy tapes. Most of my collection is from that particular store. 3 months ago I saw this display rack sitting empty in a corner of the store. I told the owner to name his price. Each month he told me he planned to use it on the media aisle. Finally, he caved and sold it to me for $15. That’s $35 less than I planned to spend on it.

I placed it next to my other thrifting trophy: a mother of pearl inlayed cabinet that I found by wandering into a thrift store by accident on 1/2 off furniture day. It was marked for $100. I get to the register and the girl told me if I checked into the store on Facebook, I’d get another 50% off the discounted price. So I’m pulling out my wallet to pay $25 and realize I have a punch card for $15 in store credit fully redeemable from my last few visits. So I paid $10 for a holy grail piece. It holds all my clamshells and kid’s movies.

Both of these stores will usually charge $1 per vhs, but sometimes you catch them on a bad day and suddenly a tape that’s been sealed for 30 years is $5 or a Disney Black Diamond Edition is $10. Sometimes different cashiers interpret the pages of dynamic pricing information , faded and edited in pen from years of policy changes, different from another cashier and suddenly what was a good deal on Monday becomes highway robbery on Friday. Sometimes an employee with no barcodes keeping track of the rules will let you stack three discounts on one another. Sometimes you don’t find anything interesting.

Happy hunting!

Been watching for these to appear and finally got lucky! Lots of nostalgia here growing up in the 90s and sneaking to friends houses to watch these. 😝 Goodwill auctions and it wasn’t cheap but worth it for me.

DIY By god, I figured it out!

I hate standard bookshelfs for vhs tapes. I remember the video store displayed the cover in full glory to attract your attention. Well I finally figured it out. A 1 1/2 inch block of wood with a 10 degree angle on the top. It holds tape firm to wall with gravity, and shows off that cover as it should be. I still have to paint walls before I attach these, but I will post updates in future.

New Pickup Recent purchase I wanted to get the companion to my B&O TV so I got a lovely fully boxed and complete Beocord VX7000 VCR that has been fully overhauled

Bought this up last week, although getting it here was a bit of an ordeal!

It initially went missing in transit, and I was starting to worry it wouldn’t turn up at all. Eventually, it arrived about five days late, but unfortunately, it had taken quite a shake around during shipping. I discovered that the pinch roller had come loose inside the mechanism, so was a little bit gutted at first.

After a day or so of fiddling about, I finally managed to get the pinch roller back into position and properly secured. Thankfully, it’s now working perfectly.

VHS Hi-Fi sounds absolutely incredible. I’ve got the VX7000 connected to my Bang & Olufsen TV and Beosystem 5000, running through a pair of Beovox Penta floorstanding speakers, and the sound quality is genuinely impressive. It’s easy to forget just how good VHS Hi-Fi could be.

The Beocord VX7000 is somewhat notorious for its reliability issues, even when these machines were quite new. Interestingly, the tape transport itself is a fairly robust Hitachi mechanism. It’s actually the power supply electronics that tend to let these machines down and they go bang.

Fortunately, this particular example has already been extensively overhauled, including a full recap of the power supply.

Its actually sitting on a Microwave stand I found on amazon as I realised its 54cm length its also about the typical size of most microwaves. Everything else I was looking for was either 10cm too small or way too big for the corner I had in mind.

The machine was fairly sophistic for the time (1993), does NTSC playback, has 7 heads so can do a proper pause and apparently can do slow motion although I have not played about with that yet.

It came from a well known B&O collector who has written a couple of books on the subject and is an absolute fountain of knowledge when it comes to the brand , I’m delighted to finally have a working VX7000 as part of my 1980s & early 1990s B&O setup.

I am desperate for Moomin' VHS but they're so rare in the US and the price tag is crazy... So DIY seems to be the best option right now!

I even have a cover I am printing myself! (I will update when I get a chance with some photos)

Discussion S-VHS: Can you tell the difference from VHS?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Today were are featuring the JVC GR-SXM265U -- a Super VHS camcorder that uses VHS-C tapes!

All footage was shot in S-VHS mode, which offers about 400 lines of resolution (comparable to LaserDisc) versus 240 lines from standard VHS tapes.

Color resolution is unchanged.

I used the Portta digital recorder to capture at 1080p and deinterlace to 60 frames-per-second simultaneously. It did a pretty good job as usual.

How do you like the S-VHS footage? Do you still find it vintage since it's analog after all? How about the mono analog sound? Good enough for VHS? Or is it way worse than the FM or PCM from more modern camcorders?

Let me know!

P.S. 60 frames per second encode available on YouTube:

Is it bc I have a crappy tv with built in VHS? Would the tape run better in a stand alone VCR?
