Hi guys, have lurked for a while but recently picked up my first player (a DVL-919E) for a steal; Old karaoke guy retired and was selling his gear, so got the DVL-919E, a CD karaoke player, 40 karaoke LD and 140 karaoke CDGs for £350. I am selling everything else in the bundle to get the LD player for free (or at least nearly free).
But before i plug it into my setup, I want to get an AC3 demodulator; It seems silly to put it into its final home without giving it the setup it deserves.
Getting a demodulator in the UK is proving much harder than i anticipated without paying extortionate shipping/import. I am a poor uni student, so everything I do home-cinema-wise is on a very low budget (normally £0, as i rely on buying joblots and making my money back by reselling what I dont want). I probably should have expected it if I had given it any thought, given that PAL discs had no need for one.
Have any fellow UK/european people used a high-end AVR from the late 90s with built-in demodulator? I already have quite a nice AVR (Denon AVR-3300W) with all the modern amenities I need, so it seems silly to get a second AVR simply to process the RF signal then feed that right into my orignal AVR to feed my 5.1 setup.
But suitable old AVRs can be had on FB marketplace for £20 if you are patient, whilst the proper AC3 demodulators START at £220.
I guess my question is, does anyone else use an AV receiver as a demodulator, and does it work well?
Edit: Ive done a bit more research, and i think unfortunately the setup will be fairly clunky :( Once i feed the RF signal into the vintage receiver to demodulate it, theres then no good way to output that signal into my main AVR. And I dont want two AVRs I need to switch between, and all the extra speaker runs that come with that.
One reply made a good point that AC3 surround probabky doesn't actually add a whole lot and I should just enjoy the system as-is for a while, and I think I agree with him. Thanks the the advice!
