Dear Hennings: get it together with the heating

“Wow what a brisk morning. I can’t wait to warm up hennings” I thought to myself. I was then blasted by the surface of the sun.

HENN and I have beefed about the heat before, but today was unreal. Had to have been at least 27 C in there. Prof was visibly flushed and students were getting dizzy. My prof called maintenance immediately but we ended lecture early when they didn’t come at all in the HOUR we waited.

Like get it together. I’m the first to complain about the cold but cmon now. Ghosting the maintenance request is wild

Confession Here is why I don't wait at the end of the line for the 99

People constantly stop loading into the bus before it is full!!

I take the 99 twice a week and at least once a week, if not twice, people at the doors stop getting on and let the bus leave when there is heaps of space!

Today I was walking up to the middle doors of the 99 as it was pulling away and there was lots of space and people waiting by the doors who chose not to get on.

And then because most people are looking at their phones, they just assume the bus is full without looking up and also stop and wait without going in.

I easily was able to get on the next bus and again, people chose to wait by the doors as soon as all the obvious seats were taken, letting the bus leave with space. I counted space for at least 3 people to sit and 12 people to stand comfortably.

So, because I can't trust people to actually load into the bus when there is space, I always walk past the line. I don't butt in while the line is still loading but if people choose to "wait", while there is still room, I'm going to hop on.

Is AI devasting higher education?

This essay written by a colleague in the Centre for Advancing Journalism at the University of Melbourne is more pessimistic than I am, but it is worth reading.

There are fundamental questions we should be asking about a university's relationships with students, academic or otherwise. What do we believe our value propositions to students are? What do students believe those value propositions should be? To what extent are we meeting their expectations, and how well do we understand the differences between our perspectives and theirs?

Term isn’t going great

Basically the title. Registered for 5 classes this term because I thought I could handle it, but surprise surprise my mental health is even worse this year than it was last year, and I missed a bunch of classes for this one course because I physically couldn’t get out of bed because I’d spend the nights before just absolutely paralyzed with sadness, and I bombed the midterm so I ended up withdrawing from the course last night. I don’t even recognize myself anymore- skipping classes, withdrawing from a course, handing in every assignment late, not preparing for midterms and assessments. Even at my worst last year, it wasn’t to this extreme level of indifference. What makes it worse is that I want to be a good student, I want to do well so I can get a great job in the future, but it’s so goddamn hard to care about anything when your mental health is so shit. I just feel like a failure, I feel bad that I’m out $700 for dropping a course because I gaslighted myself into thinking I’m doing better now. I know university is not easy for anyone, but why is it so difficult for me to stay afloat? UBC was my dream school but nothing has gone as I imagined or planned now that I’m actually here.

Discussion R4 service is shit now

Idk what it is guys, why is R4 timing + service so shit now. There’s never a bus on time. They are all delayed and they all then arrive at the same time AND THEN THEY ARE ALL FULL!!

Is this due to infrastructure planning problems. I feel insane waiting 15+ minutes for a RAPID bus

Course Question Is it bad that I just want to pass?

Is it a bad mindset to just want to pass everything? (Like get the credits without caring about super high grades). I want to focus on my mental health and also training. I'm only a first year not planning on grad school and I want to do well but passing (each class and getting credit) to me is a win on its own. Is that bad?

South is down cuz South Korea and north is up cuz North Korea

Or think of Texas (down south)

West and east are simple if you think of it as WEst, where W(west) is the first letter of the word to the left and E(east) is the second letter to the right of W.

Thank you

Have had multiple midterms but just keep going blank

Hi I’m a first year, and had multiple midterms and I failed most of them, and it’s not that I don’t study but that once I have the papers in front of me my mind just goes blank I see the question and the words just don’t enter my brain and sometimes I remember the specific time and questions I practice for studying but just couldn’t recall how to do them properly, and everything around me just seemed to get so loud like the sound of people writing and even the sound of breathing, not to mention I had a drippy nose… honestly I feel like I have something wrong with me but have never gotten it diagnosed so I could be just hallucinating. Anyways, I was just wondering is it still possible to do alright by the finals even if the midterm I did recently is worth a quarter of my grade? Like genuinely I think I got 0 on it… I’m willing to put in the effort I just don’t know if I can push through with this awful anxiety and I don’t know how to improve my study techniques so I can retain information better. Is there any advice that I can get to help me push through or like study techniques I can try? Any advice will help and I’d be really thankful 🥹. Honestly I feel like an impostor because everyone around me if understanding things faster and seems so put together 😔

Has anyone used ihatecanvas.com ?

So there’s this website called ihatecanvas.com and supposedly it transfers your assignment/exam deadlines into your Google Calendar, a feature Canvas should already have, but it requires your canvas login credentials. So I’m wondering if anyone has used it and can verify it’s legit.

PHYS 131 Textbook

I didn't realize so many people didn't have the PHYS 131 textbook! I’ve found it really helpful, so I wanted to share a few tips for using it.

If you have access to the textbook, I definitely recommend doing the MCQs at the end of each chapter since they're very similar to the questions we get in the course. For more challenging written questions, try the problems by section, and don't skip the checkpoints either because they're great for testing your conceptual understanding.

Hopefully this helps some of you with studying!

Discussion UPDATE: Prof asking for supporting documents from a verified person about my senior dog's declining health and my mental health declining due to that for midterm concession

The head finally responded to my email regarding everything but had a super vague reply telling me that she's been in contact and suggests that I email my prof for further steps. I am frustrated because I don't know what they've talked about or whether this is even going to change anything. I sent a reply back:

"Thank you for getting back to me.

Before I contact my professor again, could you clarify what to expect? Specifically, will she accept a self-declaration for my concession, as the Senate policy on academic concessions allows, or should I expect to be asked for documentation again?

I’d like to keep a good working relationship with my professor and I raised this only because the request for documentation didn’t align with the policy I’d been directed to by other instructors. I requested the concession on compassionate grounds and understood a self-declaration would be sufficient. I’m also happy to meet or have you joined the conversation if that would help resolve it smoothly.

If it’s helpful, I can share the specific policy language I’m referring to.

Thank you again for your help."

Is this a good message? Should I reach out to other profs to vouch for me? I feel really powerless and this makes me not want to go into class knowing that I might be looked at like a liar or someone purposely making their life hard. I have proof that I've gone to my counselling appointment but why should I need to provide that when it's my right by policy to not require it. Am I over-reacting? Is there any prof who would be wiling to help me?

ubc pharmd advice

I'm a second year student who is applying to pharmD this year. I personally don't plan to finish the rest of my undergrad nor want to as i personally see it as a waste of money for my future. In the event that i don't get in, would it be plausible to just take a year off, and wait for the next admission cycle, or is it better to continue taking courses towards my degree until i get in the subsequent year.

my average should be in the 85 range

Thanks for the input!

New UBC seminar on AI and critical art | ASTU 400-E: Creativity and Critical Thinking in The Age of Intelligent Machines

Post image
1 Upvotes

Have you thought about how AI intersects with art and critical thinking? Are you interested in using artistic practices to inquire into the technology? If so, you might be interested in ASTU 400-E, UBC's only research-creation seminar that addresses AI!

Over Term 2, we will explore various critiques of AI, alongside how the arts can serve as a venue for knowledge production and social critique. By the end of the term, each of us will create an original artwork on AI and present our pieces at an open studio event, where you can share your insights and creative process with the Vancouver public! And yes, you will receive upper-level credits for this seminar as you do for a normal course!

  • ASTU 400-E will run 02:00-03:30 PM (Tuesday/Thursday). This seminar will run only once and have limited capacity.
  • We welcome students from all disciplines and artistic backgrounds---the only requirement is that you must be an undergraduate student with Year 3+ standing.

Registration is open now on Workday! Interested? Please scan the QR code for the introductory syllabus, or check out this link to learn more about the seminar.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop them below---or send me an email at [ninh.dang@sauder.ubc.ca](mailto:ninh.dang@sauder.ubc.ca) (yes, I am a Sauder student who makes art---we do exist, haha!)

Thank you so much for your time :D! I look forward to learning and making art with you next term!

In solidarity,

Khang-Ninh.
