ATTN: Trans US Americans Considering Moving to Ireland
Howdy! If you are a US trans person seeking information about life in Ireland as a place to move to outside of the States, please please ask your questions here or search within this community for already discussed content.
I have been seeing more and more fellow US Americans posting here for information. This is completely understandable due to the intensifying situation in the US! I am a US transgender man myself who moved to Ireland who may or may not be working closely with a legal team to explore asylum systems in Canada and Europe. (I also have an Irish sweetheart I intend to marry but that is besides the point! Haha).
I am not here to provide "legal advice." You are responsible for your own decisions. I can provide considerations/suggestions and an opportunity to alleviate the labor from my Irish trans friends of repeatedly providing information about Ireland (Of course, feel free to still contribute to the conversation if you have the bandwidth! I would never consider myself an expert on trans life in Ireland!).
Some things I have gathered thus far during my time in Ireland:
Safety:
- Ireland is a very safe country. Of course, there is always risk wherever you go so be mindful of your surroundings. Although still a minority, there is anti-(im)migrant sentiments that have manifested in the form of rallies/protests. Although there has been incredible pushback/counter protests, this is something to keep in mind, especially if you are a person of color. I have learned there were cases of violence in Dublin and up in the North. Again, few instances.
Housing:
- Housing is very limited here and therefore it is (more often than not) incredibly expensive. I cannot stress this enough. Coming from the States where prices are also ridiculous, one needs to keep in mind that your US dollars will be weaker here (USD is around .85 to Euro approx rn) and that wages here are not keeping up with the cost of living.
Medical:
- Access to gender affirming care (specifically HRT) is quite a difficult process in Ireland. I have heard people say it is one of the worst in Europe. If you are first starting out on HRT, there is an incredibly long wait time to go through the public system (like several years) and it is not cheap to access care through private telehealth companies. If you are intending to continue your care (like I have), know that your specific medication might not be available here. My testosterone cypionate is not. In addition, finding a primary care doctor (general practitioner/GP) is even a difficult process for cisgender people. The medical system is also overwhelmed here. Trans people are able to access HRT, but generally either go the pricey private route or DIY.
Permission to stay:
- Moving here is going to require one to figure out how to stay here legally. US citizens can be here for 90 days as regular tourists. One could look for work visas (must secure this while in the States. Might be able to secure while here, but it must be rare, nonexistent, or kept quiet). One could also apply for asylum, but be advised that this is not a guarantee at the current time, but we may very well be fast approaching this. The asylum system is also incredibly overwhelmed. In addition, you would not be able to work, even remotely until after 6 months of your case being processed without a first instance decision. So you will need substantial savings to wait this out with no guarantee for asylum status.
I share this info not to be considered an "authority" on the trans experience in Ireland. I only share as a US trans person who has been navigating life in Ireland. I do not mean to discourage other US trans people coming here, but I must be honest with the very real challenges present.
Although not without its own issues, Canada may provide an "easier" alternative. There are reports that there is an active asylum case for a US trans woman. Shortly after applying, she was able to work legally as well. In addition, a US non-binary individual's deportation out of Canada was halted citing the unsafe conditions for trans people in the US. All my love to you. I cannot explain how much my heart aches seeing the developments. I hope this information provides some help. Truly. I will answer questions as best as I can and my apologies to the Irish trans folks for me taking up space here. I just know these questions will keep coming with no slowing down in the near future...I am more than happy to take on this labor!
Please consider this resource to explore your options for leaving the US. It is only in its alpha stage, but it may prove useful to think of options. I know having the ability to leave is a privilege for various reasons, but we must not give up hope. This is the time to build community and keep each other safe. You existing is the biggest slap in the face to those who despise us. Sending you all so so much love. Be safe. https://www.helpmeleave.us/

- Testosterone and estradiol
- Urea and electrolytes/kidney panel (creatinine, eGFR, urea, sodium)
- Lipids/cholesterol panel (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL)

All Island Where to get top surgery consultation / any surgeons that do peri areolar?
I’m looking into top surgery. I’m not sure if I’m eligible for peri areolar and was wondering if anyone knew anywhere where I could get some sort of consultation. And also any surgeons who do peri (close enough to Ireland)

ROI Specific Dublin nights out as a trans guy?
Hey folks
New to Dublin. Used to live in Cork and hang out at Nudes with their cool goth/indie electronica scene, but since moving to the Big Smoke I’m finding it difficult to find my niche.
I liked Nudes because I could change it up between pints at the bar like an old man with my Beamish/Guinness or raving it up upstairs, but I don’t know where to go for that in Dublin. Doesn’t help I’m pushing 40!
Having been to a few dedicated trans-specific events, I don’t really enjoy that scene (with love to the sheer number of puppy girls: not my thing!) but if anyone has any clubs or pubs with a queer focus off the beaten track please let me know!

Plastic surgeon for top surgery
I’ve seen plastic surgeons offer mastectomies for 4k, is this available for trans men too with good results? Seems like a no brainer compared to 8 grand spent abroad

Hysterectomy hospital
Hi guys,
Does anyone know if the national maternity hospital takes trans men for hysterectomy?
I’m not with the NGS, so it would be a referral letter from my GP.
Would this work?
Thank you!!

All Island Help for MtX partner with clothes shopping?
Hi all!
Trans bf here looking for help for my trans-femme partner!!!
They’ve been on E for about a year now but they’re struggling with finding a style for themself & getting clothes that match that AND their changing body shape. They’ve had a decent amount of growth in the chest region, but areas like their hips are still filling out and it’s causing a lot of dysphoria & frustration.
They’re tall (6”), medium-plus sized and find trying on clothes in shops to be distressing & dysphoric so we’ve been avoiding that. They’d rather buy online, and so I was wondering if anyone had any links to some good clothing brands (Ireland/Europe or otherwise) that they could recommend?
They’re looking mainly for a set of dungarees and are a fan of autumnal colours, & a sort of minimalist grunge aesthetic (midwest-emo-but-enby is how I describe it) They see a lot of pieces they like but are unsure how it’d fit on them due to the model being afab & skinnier.
Included photos of the style they’re going for!
I’d really appreciate any help on this, ty 🫶

Really good comic
https://jewishcurrents.org/diary-of-a-transgenderr-ideology-extremist
I just wanted to share this because I think it does really well to depict the modern trans experience, especially beyond the whole transitioning part, the every day life part and how the world can make you feel even after all that's done. I find it quite uplifting though, and my trans mam has a guest panel at one point which is really cool and makes me super proud of her.

All Island looking for wedding witness (Dublin)
hi! my girlfriend and i are getting married next week and we're looking for somebody to be the 2nd witness for the ceremony. unfortunately it's legally required. we don't really have friends and don't want to get family involved, so we don't have much of a choice but to ask around.
there's not really much of a wedding to speak of, just the formal ceremony. we're not getting dressed up or anything. it's just us, a friend, and the person doing the marrying. that's about the size of it!
we're more than willing to pay you some €50 for your time and to cover your travel costs. you would need to bring your passport, so be aware of that if you haven't updated your documents!!
the ceremony takes place in Dublin. if you're interested, please feel free to send DM or comment and we'll DM.
sending love <3

Government opposes bill on non-binary recognition
I'm not surprised yet I'm still fucking devastated. it's been 12 years since I first heard the word non-binary and knew it suited me. I was 15 then, I'm almost 28 now and I still can't envision a possible future for me until I can change my name AND gender marker together.

All Island Awareness about potential anti-trans group
Hello! I just got this ad (in comments) and decided to take a look at the website to see if they sounded like a supportive organisation or not. What I saw was a collection of anti-trans sentiments that discourage transition at all. Detransition is 100% fine if that works for you, but the wording in this site worries me. I also noticed that some of the therapists in their network are based in Ireland, so just wanted to warn people who are comfortable and not seeking detransition about these practicioners should you be looling for a therapist in general!! Be careful out there, and mind eachother

ROI Specific GRC question
Hi guys, im thinking of getting a GRC done but I have a few questions
Im not an irish citizen, im a polish citizen, but I posses an irish birth cert since I was born here, the GRC website doesnt state anywhere that I would require an irish citizenship to get a GRC, and i was wondering if anyone else who is in my situation has gotten a GRC done
additionally if i can get a GRC done, would it be valid to change my name and gender on polish legal documents? this might be the wrong place to ask tho, so no worries if you dont have answers
(for those wondering "how were you born here yet you dont have an irish citizenship?", in ireland you can only be a citizen if one of your parents is a citizen. it is by blood, not by birth. and a citizenship by naturalisation is fucking expensive to apply for so im focusing on transitioning first)

ROI Specific Blood tests with doctors
So to have blood tests with doctors, what do I need to tell them?
Do I have to specify what things I need tested (estradiol, testosterone, full blood count, liver function etc) or do they testing provide detailed results?
Sometimes, doctors & nurses can just be very much, if you don't ask something specifically, they don't tell you.
