Announcement Weekly Reminder: Rules and FAQ - October 25, 2026 (Now with updates!)

Below you will find a weekly reminder of our Rules and partial FAQ. It's definitely a long read, but it's worth your time, especially if you are new to the community, or dropping by as a result of a link you found elsewhere. We periodically revise our rules, this weekly notice will help keep you informed of any changes made.

NOTE: These rules are guidelines. Some moderation discretion is to be expected.

Community Rules

1. Kindness Matters

Advise, don't criticize.

  • Post with empathy, thoughtfulness, and constructive commentary rather than judgment. Don't be an asshole.
  • Name-calling, slurs (including gender or race based slurs), and insults towards other community members will not be tolerated. Do not attack others for their personally held values, custody situation, marital status, physical distance from stepkids, or economic status; or on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ethnicity.
  • No name-calling toward children, including the above-mentioned insults or the term "skids", or terms such as "mini-wife" or "mini-husband."
  • Comments advocating spanking or any mention of wanting to harm children are not allowed.
  • This is a support sub, not a judgement sub, assholes are not tolerated. Comments with terms used in other subs to pass judgement on assholes will be removed.

2. No Drama

This is a support sub.

  • Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment will not be tolerated and will be subject to removal at moderator discretion.
  • Do not repeatedly badger a poster demanding answers, or refuse to acknowledge an answer that's already been given.
  • Do not use sensitive issues from past posts (either from this sub or other subs) to attack another user, as we are all discussing vulnerable topics.
  • Crossposting anything from /r/stepparents to any other subreddit might result in a ban and may result in the original thread being locked. Brigading our sub will result in an immediate ban.

3. Report, Don’t Rant

No backseat modding.

  • If you see someone breaking the rules, report the post or comment to the mods rather than engaging them in an argument. Failure to do so may be subject to comment removal at moderator discretion.
  • No meta posts complaining about rude comments, DMs, or general sub issues.
  • If you think someone is a troll or previously banned user, either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.

4. No Naming & Shaming

No userpings or links.

  • Tagging/pinging users or other subreddits in an attempt to bully, harass, or complain will not be tolerated. Do not tag other subs, ever.
  • If you want to complain about another subreddit being hostile to stepparents, do not name the subreddit. "Other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice.

5. No Platitudes

Nobody knew what they were getting into.

  • Comments like "You knew what you were getting into", "Love them, love their kids!", "They're a package deal!" and "You have to love them like your own!" will be removed.
  • Comments suggesting that OP is not cut out for stepparenting will be removed at moderator discretion.
  • Comments like "This is just a part of parenting, deal with it!" will be removed at moderator discretion.

6. No Trolling

We have zero tolerance for trolls.

  • This is a support sub. Our subscribers do not have the time, nor inclination, to provide support to internet trolls. Posts that are suspected to be trolling attempts will be immediately removed, and the poster banned.
  • Concern trolling, devil's advocating, gish-galloping, sealioning, and general asshattery are subject to immediate removal and banning without warning or notice.
  • Any attempt to circumvent the ban by creating a new username will be reported to reddit admins and possibly result in account suspension.

7. No Personally Identifiable Information

Use discretion when posting.

  • We highly recommend using a separate account for support subs to help prevent being doxxed. Do not post any information that may allow others to figure out your identity.
  • Do not post photos of children, or any other photo that could be used to identify you or another user on the sub.
  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.
  • Do not link to social media or any articles/blogs where you or another user on the sub is mentioned by name.

8. No More than 2 Posts per 24 hours

Use the daily threads.

  • We are not a huge sub, but we are no longer a small sub. If you have multiple grievances to air, use the daily discussion threads instead of multiple posts.

9. Follow Reddiquette

Remember the human.

  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
  • Read it in full here.
  • Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
  • If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
  • Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.

10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval

Just don't.

  • This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
  • Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
  • No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
  • No advertising without prior mod approval.
  • No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

Vent Washing my hands of homework hell

• Upvotes

I love my 11yo step son. He can be SO sweet and thoughtful and kind. We have a lot of fun together most of the time. But he is a complete A-HOLE when it comes to homework and showers.

His dad lets him negotiate, argue, bribe, stall, cry, half-ass whenever he needs to do homework and it has turned him into a complete mess. We got him into tutoring twice a week just to have someone in a teacher position to get him to actually READ. I am convinced this is an effort issue, because he can read and comprehend things that matter to him, but will just find any which way but the right way to do his class or homework correctly. What he fails to understand, despite our many attempts to explain to him, is that he ends up spending MORE time trying to circumvent the "rules" of the assignment, than if he actually sat down and did it correctly the first time.

The straw/camel was yesterday. He has a lot of stuff going on this week (field trip, cub scouts) and needs to read 6 chapters and complete 6 pages of writing homework by Thursday. He also had cub scouts yesterday and wasn't going to get home until late. So I decide to pick him up early from after school and try to hammer out some reading before cub scouts to give him an edge and help him get it done on time so he's not grinding it all last minute (as he tends to do).

I know what I'm in for, so I pick him up, I get him mcdonalds so he's not hangry, give him 15 minutes when we get home to chill out and then it's time. He sits down at the kitchen table with his book and just looks at me.

I say, "What? Go ahead and start reading. Isn't that what you do with Ms. Taylor?"

He looks at me and has this coy smile like a kid that's just figured out that not everything that comes out of his mouth has to be honest and says, "Ms. Taylor reads the book to me."

I'm like, "No.. that's not true. She has you read. You're in 5th grade." He says, "No, she reads it to me. It doesn't matter, I still get the answers."

I say, "So if I ask Ms. Taylor tomorrow if she reads the book to you when you're in tutoring with her, she's going to tell me she does?"

"I can't remember. It was last week, so I don't remember if she reads to me or not"

At this point I'm like.. really mad. I don't like being lied to, especially about something so dumb. So I explain, "I don't like being lied to. You're with your mom this week. You have scouts tonight. Everything is going to be due the day after tomorrow. Do you really think your mom is going to be happy if you go home tomorrow and none of this is done? Let's just get it done."

Then come the water works. So I just walk away. After a few minutes he picks up the book and.... just starts skimming the pages, looking for the answers on his homework page. I explain to him that he is expected to read the book, there are going to be tests and quizzes on material that are not just from these homework pages. He just rolls his eyes and says his teacher told him he could skim.

At this point I just gave up. I call his dad, and told him what happened and my husband says, "Well I don't think he LIED.. she probably reads a page or two for him or something. I'll be home soon." ..... -____- He did threaten him with grounding him off all electronics if he doesn't start getting his grades up but those have been empty threats so far.

BM is so frustrated as well because her own mom will not help by picking him up early and doing homework with him when she works late. BUT I KNOW WHY!!!!

I AM going to ask his tutor today what the protocol is during these tutoring sessions, because I'm positive he flat out lied but I just want to confirm that in front of him. But I'm not going out of my way to help with this stuff anymore. It is just not worth my blood pressure going up over. Anyway, I just wanted to vent to fellow stepparents because telling BPs their permissive parenting sucks and effects everyone else around their kid doesn't usually go over well. LOL Thanks for listening!!

Vent Ours baby coming and NC with his ex wife

• Upvotes

So long story short, we have a baby on the way. Ex is very bitter that we are having a baby and even threatened a lawsuit over our baby. He did not cheat on her with me, I met him after they seperated and she was already moved in with her current bf. We were actually friendly and on good terms for over a year until the divorce started and there was a disagreement about holidays. She blocked me on all social media and text, and also did the same to his entire family which I find bizarre since she used to reach out during holidays with the kids and stay in contact with their fathers family.

Now baby is due soon and I’m having hard feelings about our relationship with her. Of course I want my partners children to be able to share their new sister with their mother but their mother made it clear she wants to hear nothing about it. My partner and I have discussed deleting pics of our baby off of their iPads before dropping them off at their mothers to avoid triggering her into a rage because that is the type of person she is. We also discussed keeping our baby away from her as much as humanely possible, again to avoid triggering her rage and to avoid unnecceasry drama and negative emotions around our baby.

That is the part that kills me. I wish she could just be mature and have a normal relationship with everyone. Of course she doesn’t HAVE to talk to me or my partners family and I don’t expect her to want to or feel the need to. But a part of me wishes everything could just be chill and we could have a good relationship.

This is more of a vent post. I expect nothing of her and have no expectations. Being NC has been best anyways since she is HC. But a part of me just longs for us all to get along and work together as a team for their children and to allow a baby to get to know their sisters without us fearing a rabbit hole of negativity. Again, I don’t think she has to do anything or feel a specific type of way, this is just something I wish could change to benefit everyone. Maybe she sees it as too much for her and her children and thinks it’s best to keep everything separate and avoid acknowledging our baby. Idk but it just makes my heart break just a bit.

It was so hard to explain to the kids that no your mother is not coming to the baby shower. We kept it short and to the point. “I think your mom is busy that day”. If things were different we would’ve invited her. The kids wanted her there so bad and of course being cute kids they wanted to take the party gifts home to their mom. We hid them so they wouldn’t. I hate walking on eggshells like this.

I know things probably won’t change. I have a hard time with her presence as well because she has called me names and threatened to call the cops on me and accused me of plotting to kidnap her children which was crazy tbh we were planning a waterpark trip and he asked if they were available that weekend. We used to keep her in the loop about everything, like almost over sharing. We both thought she would like to know the whereabouts of her kids and how they were doing but maybe it was too much for her and she snapped? I’m not sure idk but lesson learned I guess.

I’ll probably get roasted in the comments for being naive or something but whatever, a girl can dream!

Long story short our baby is due soon and I wish we could all get along for the benefit of all our children.

Vent Underappreciated and being made to feel like the bad guy about it

• Upvotes

Thank god there’s a sub for every situation. I need advice I guess or maybe just need to vent. I (33F) live with my boyfriend (45m) and he has 50/50 with his ex wife of his 10y/o son. I’ve been in the picture for the last almost 5 years now, living here for the last 2. I knew I never wanted to birth children (mental health concerns with PPD) but I like kids. It was definitely an adjustment going from living by myself and my two cats for 10 years to moving 3+ hours away from my family into a house with a man and a little boy. I also have pretty bad OCD (the actual kind, not the quirky kind. I am medicated and in treatment but that only does so much yknow?) so routines are a huge part of what keeps me sane. Anyway. They don’t have routines. I’ve managed to maintain my own around them. Life is mostly copacetic.

My boyfriend and I disagree on parenting sometimes but since I’m not mom, I usually keep my thoughts to myself for the most part. Lately though, child has not been brushing his teeth or washing his hair and it’s obvious to me. He’s also just not listening when he’s asked to do things like put his dishes in the dishwasher instead of the sink, put his clothes away properly (I’m the one who exclusively does the laundry and folds everything), pack his stuff to go back to his moms the night before. I know he’s a kid, but I’m getting frustrated.

Last night he had a huge pile of laundry to put away and had a few days to do it and waited til the last minute last night and it was all shoved into a single drawer and it really pissed me off this morning. I took a picture of it and sent it to my boyfriend saying it pissed me all the way off and he sent me this big long thing about how I’m always so negative about him (mind you I’m never negative TO him). I try to parent but I always toe the fine line because I’m NOT mom yknow? He sees me as his stepmom. He calls my mom “gramma”. I buy him clothes, I cook him meals he likes, I shuttle him to and from school and soccer practice, I’m making his fucking Halloween costume from scratch at this current moment for crying out loud.

I’m just…tired.

TLDR, never expected to have a kid but I’ve gotten accustomed to being a bonus mom but I’m still not doing it well enough.

Discussion Besoin d'un avis

Merci

Advice Should dad?

My husband's oldest turned 16 next week. He's throwing a party for her. Her and I don't have a great relationship. She has been pretty awful to me and her siblings. Doesn't really have any friends or much of our relationship with her own family. Decided to let my husband play in this party on his own. Honestly, I don't want to help celebrate a child who doesn't even like me. But we'll see my question is is his kid 14m has a football game directly before the party. He decided to go and wants me to stay home and prep all the food, etc.... I told him I don't wanna do that. And I don't plan to. Mind you he hasn't helped me with any of my daughter's birthdays over the last five years. Didn't help me with our shared daughter's birthdays. And I ended up planning on doing all the work for one of his other kids bdays and don't want to again. What should I do? Should he skip his son's game to prep for the party?

Advice I’m struggling with my girlfriend’s change in dynamic with her ex-girlfriend. I need advice/perspective?

My girlfriend is suddenly wanting to shift the dynamics of our relationship to have more consideration for her ex-girlfriend/the mother of her child. What I mean by this is that she’s now wanting to incorporate me less into the moments where her ex-girlfriend will be present as she knows her ex-girlfriend has a hard time mentally/emotionally seeing us together. So, for example, their child has a Halloween parade at school and historically I would have been able to join but now my girlfriend doesn’t want me to attend because she knows her ex will have a difficult time seeing us together. Her logic is that ultimately that’s going to benefit their child because she wants to create a relationship with her child’s mom where both of them can be in the same spaces together and get along for the benefit of their child and so their child can have memories of both of his moms together and happy. She said something along the lines of, “Is it really fair that Jack (their son) has to deal with his mom crying herself to sleep and laying around all day and struggling and shouldn’t I help her how I can not for her but for Jack?” This is just so different from how she’s historically shown up— letting me be more present even if his ex is around out of respect to our relationship and prioritization of me as her serious life partner.
They’ve been separated for somewhere between 2-3 years but only stopped living together as co-parents when she met me, so I think I also struggle with “you two have been separated for 2-3 years, it’s not your fault if your ex-girlfriend didn’t use that time to focus on her healing and is now having a hard time emotionally. This seems like a normal amount of time to have passed to allow yourself to incorporate a new partner into your coparenting dynamic.
It’s also hard because in the past she really nailed down certain statements like, “You’re my serious, committed partner and if you can’t be there, then I don’t want to walk without you” and “I want to regard our relationship like we’ve been together long term and have you present in all moments as my partner,” and “I just want to let you know that going forward, I will have bare minimum communicating and interacting with my ex” but then this is not bare minimum.
Is she being mature and healthy and I am just having a hard time? Or is my girlfriend’s ex being prioritized above me/her current partner in a way that’s not respectful or appropriate?

Advice High expectations from SD7 to be entertained during weekend . How do you spend your weekend with step and bio?

• Upvotes

I asked my sister for advice since shes a mum oh two young children who have zero screen time . She said its the same and different because they are used to certain routine and end up doing stuff alone when they don’t get attention

my sd keeps asking us what’s the plan and we played with her a little . Pretend play , then she ask to watch cartoon but then shes not able to finish a cartoon and skips to the next and I feel bad for her cos her behavior feels like a ticking bomb where she wants to make the most of the time she spends with us but we don’t have energy for 12 hours. I’m wondering if anyone has children with similar behavior? I can’t relate to her cos I used ro play with my sister when we were little and never felt lonely.
also when we play pretend with her she changes the scenario of the story so much that we are unable to keep up . I’m a fastpace person but tend to take my weekend slow to relax and chill and I feel like we are not able to have a chill weekend. I also don’t want her to be watchint cartoon and when we suggest for her to paint or draw which she rarely does but when she do she has for feedback every few mins or asking us to bring her things like colors or eraser. I started to tell her to look for it herself and not keep asking for help.
I notice my husband is a little bit like this and I wonder if this is genetic? I’m very independent and only ask for help when I really need so this kind of trigger me. I need constructive advice how to put structure in our household where everyone is feeling welcomed respected and not burntout. It is weekend!

Advice Living separate from partner and stepkids

I need advice on my living situation.

To preface this, I do not particularly enjoy kids, especially young ones, and I do not want kids of my own. The constant noise and seeking for attention, together with their general messiness, make me bubble up and set me in a constant fight or flight state.

Now, to the question in the title.

My partner has two kids aged 6 and 8 who are with us every other weekend. I find them particularly difficult as they are very loud, constantly seeking attention, and always bored and looking for input. They can be left playing on their own for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time, after that, they start becoming extremely loud and run around the house. They refuse to do quiet activities (i.e., drawing, making a puzzle) on their own.

When they are with us, I have no space for myself in the house. If I "hide" in our bedroom, they will eventually make their way to it even if my partner told them not to. My other option is leaving the house, but I sometimes just want to relax at home.

There are other things happening surrounding them (me being the taxi driver for everyone, them starting a Saturday morning activity and me having to drive them, me cooking and cleaning the house whether they are here not) which are not the main focus of my question.

I was wondering if it would be worth staying in a relationship with my partner, whom I love dearly, but getting my own place where I can live in peace and without chaos and noise surrounding me.

Does anyone have any experience on a similar situation? What would you do if you were me?

Edit: this post seems to have gotten out of hand. I'm not asking advice about the custody arrangements nor am I asking to judge the other parent. I'm asking about the living situation, so please keep your comments on that topic or do not comment. Thank you.

Support Depressed About How Things Are Going

My girlfriend and I have been together for about a year and a half. She has two daughters, 9 and 14. She didn't introduce me to them for six months, which I really respected, even though she told me about them on our first date. I also felt, at the time, that I didn't want to meet them if things didn't work out with us.

I met them last Christmas. Since then, things have been going fairly well. This summer we agreed to move in with each other and we rented a house and were able to give the kids their own rooms.

Since living together I feel like things have been tense. I have a lot of responsibilities but no authority and I am not making the kind of connections with them I thought I would. SD9 razzes me a lot and makes me feel unseen. Perhaps this wouldn't be a big deal but I never had kids of my own and always wanted to be a dad. And I'm starting to feel like the kids are never going to see me that way. And it's extremely depressing.

My girlfriend reads to SD9 most nights except when she has to work. Whenever she is gone, SD9 will never let me read to her. I went home recently and brought back some of my old kid books thinking I could share them with her and we could have some bonding but she has been stubbornly disinterested in them.

And I feel like I'm the one being a child over all this. I typically have a firm grip on my emotions and my life... At least I thought I did. And now my feelings are getting hurt? I feel pathetic. Like how could I let a 9 year old hurt my feelings?

I got SD14 a turntable and stereo for her birthday. I thought it was weird she didn't have a way to listen to music. And I gave her a ton of records. Since March I don't think she has listened to a single one of them. And if I'm being too sensitive about this, please tell me. This is all new to me and I don't know what to do. I don't know how to navigate this experience... And I know what's really upsetting me is that my expectations are different from reality. But I don't want different expectations. I want to be a dad and feel like a dad. I mean... I do feel like a dad... Kind of... I just want them to see me that way.

I just don't know what to do and feel stuck. I mentioned having a kid to my girlfriend and she said she would be down but that the likelihood of that is slim at her age. I'm very jealous of the relationship her kids have with her. I am filled with emotions that I don't feel are very mature and are probably misplaced. It's a very confusing time for me.

But here I am... We have a house together and I have to see this through. And I can change my perspective and expectations. But it's so depressing that I've had less than pleasant thoughts about my own safety and well-being. Maybe it will pass.

Discussion Before I ever met DH and SKs...

I had been a nanny for foster/adopted children from a troubled background and really felt like I had a heart and a call for loving and healing troubled children. I think that's part of the reason I eventually ended up as a stepmom; I was open to mothering children not my own. And I went into it wearing my heart on my sleeve.

Fast forward to now, and looking over my stepmom journey, I'm horrified and heartbroken to realize that I've witnessed happy, (relatively) normal children being incredibly emotionally damaged in real time. I've fought with sweat, blood, and tears, and I feel like my best efforts have been nearly fruitless. My SKs are so far beyond my reach now - physically for the older one, since he now lives full-time at his mom's; and emotionally for both of them since they've verbally abused me, scapegoated, and lied about me times beyond count.

I 100% blame BM and stepdad. After the custody case, the PA stopped, but it had already gone on for years and trauma like that doesn't just disappear.

I don't access these feelings so much anymore because they're frozen over, but the love and the pain are all still there underneath, and I can access them when I'm alone and undistracted.

Discussion Do people really think you should wait until your stepkids move out for their well being before having kids of your own??

I saw a post in another sub where someone was asking how people handled having a new baby while their stepchild was a teenager going through a rough phase. Fair question, I get that teenage years can be hard, especially in a blended family.

But I was honestly surprised by some of the comments. A lot of people seemed to think you should basically put your own life on hold and prioritize existing child until they turn 18 and move out before even thinking about having kids together.

I disagreed and said you can actially balance both. I also voiced how it isn’t fair for the new partners who is not a parent yet and want to be one. Step parents are supposed to only prioritize someone else’s kid’s well being first, over your desire to become a parent on your own and build a family for yourself? Well, my comments got downvoted like crazy, points being a teenagers living in a split divorced household is hard already, so bringing a half siblings will add more negatives into it so waiting is the best option? Some people even got petty, saying they hope my husband doesnt have majority custody of his son because they feel bad for my stepson?

But seriously, what about the partner who doesnt have kids yet? Are they just supposed to wait another 10+ years to become a parent because their partner already has a child? What if they’re in their late 30s or 40s? What if by the time the stepkid moves out, they cant even have kids anymore??

Of course your existing kids should be loved and taken care of. Nobody is saying otherwise. But why does having a child from a previous relationship mean your new partner has to put their own dreams of becoming a parent on hold? Why is everyone acting like you cant be a good dad to your existing child AND have another baby with your new partner? If I were to be a divorced parent with a child, I would not want to jeopardize a chance of having a new family with a new partner I love, just because my existing child is a teen going through a rough time.

My husband would never ask me to put my life or my dream of becoming a mom on hold just to accomodate his son. We believe there can be a balance. His son spends good balanced time in both households, I know it is hard growing up in a divorced households, but we do the best we can in a given situation to keep everyone happy in healthy balance.

Genuinely curious if other people see this differently.

Advice Hi, new here Need advice.

Please, ask me any questions as I'm not gonna tell you everything from the beginning because it's a lot, but I'll answer questions.

I'm fairly new at this. I'm about 5 months in this relationship & with someone who has kids. I've know the person I'm dating for a very long time & we decided to give it a go.

I know what I got into when coming into this relationship. He has two kids, I ABSOLUTELY adore them. He also knows what he got into coming into it knowing that I have a few mental illnesses.

I know what I'm capable of & what I am not.

I know my limits. Custody is still being worked on through the courts with the kids, & yes. Everything has been very messy. There's no set routine.

I'm coming here because pickup days keep switching, I keep agreeing to everything but also voicing when I need space for myself as well, as I don't want to burn out & not be able to give all of what I need to for the kids. I took them on during the week while my boyfriend worked, had the little one, toddler for 8 hours a day for 3 days. THe older 1st grader has school & after school program. That, was already a little overwhelming for me as I've never been put in a situation like this, I took it on because I care & love my boyfriend & them very much. The schedule stopped due to the parents. Now, recently, they've agreed one week on & one week off. I wasn't spoken to about this.. I feel like I should have been included in this conversation because I'm being included in that decision that was made. So I'm expected to watch the little one all week, do morning drop off & after pick up. I should have been included to make sure I'm capable of that, because that's all it really comes down to for me. I'm typically getting more time with the little one, than my boyfriend is. I don't want to be selfish, because they are his kids. & I absolutely adore them. I just know how my body works, & that's going to be a lot for me.. I'm scared I'm gonna burn out & not provide what I need to provide for the kids & even him. I'm scared to bring it up because in my head, I knew what I was coming into.. I should be willing, & it's not that I'm not, it's that it's gonna take a toll on me & I will get overwhelmed & over stimulated. I feel like I'm continuously having to fight for my time & space & even time with him. I want my days to be my days.. I want my week to be my week. No interpretations of her calling asking us to take the kids on our week off.. & I feel like SUCH a shit person for thinking this way, but I'm also trying to keep my mental health in check. Advice please, am I wrong for thinking this way..

JustBMThings Did she tell an adult?

That's my new go to question any and every time my SD 8 tells me something her mom is going to do or said she would do. Her mom is flakey. I am so tired of that poor kid getting let down every week. Thanksgiving? She's going somewhere 8 hours away according to 8 yo. Has her mom asked or told an adult? No.

Last week she told kiddo she'd come pick her up from school and take her to do something. Never told an adult and day of at 7 am called my husband and goes, I can't come get her after school today so don't send a note with her. No one had any clue of her intentions to do that because she never spoke to an adult.

Today? She told my husband she'd take her out of school early. He called to make sure she was going to, she's flaked before after we canceled an adult waiting on kiddo at the house and we've had to scramble... Anyway, he calls her to make sure and she goes, well actually I am sick. After driving an hour and a half, she picks kiddo up from school an hour early, took her to target, bought herself some shoes nothing for kiddo, and then made her go to urgent care with her then dropped her off before school ended at our house.

  1. Why the fuck did you feel the need to take her out of school early?

  2. If you're sick why did you feel the need to pick up a child and not just cancel like all of the other times?

  3. You drove an hour and a half here knowing you were sick? Why?

I just don't know or understand.

Normally I don't concern myself with it but like I don't want to be sick? I don't want your kid who lives with me to be sick? She has her 2 weekend of the month this weekend with her and she normally doesn't see her 2 weeks at a time, why not wait until Friday when you feel better to spend time with her? Just GAH

Advice Being pulled into HCBM drama at their house

So SD13 was at her moms house throwing stuff in her room, trashing it, locked the door

Her mom’s husband (stepdad) took her door off the hinges and removed bc she was going crazy.

SD13 then called my husband (her dad) to come get her bc she was angry. He said no bc she isn’t in any danger and often acts erratic like this. She’s been kicked out of school, in ISS, and is currently in tenancy court for not attending school regularly. The truancy period is three years bc her mom let her skip school all the time and she’ll now go to jail it it keeps happening.

He usually doesn’t answer calls from

His ex bc she is super super high conflict. Drags us into these fights, then starts cussing my husband and threatening him.

It’s been peaceful for around 6-8 months… he stopped taking any and all

Phone calls and limited all communication via text.

If her husband took the door from the hinge bc her daughter is trashing her room

Smashing stuff etc

Why would the mom let her call her dad demanding he comes? Is she wanting him to confront her husband? Demand he puts the door back?

I can’t think any reason I’d disrespect my husband

Unless I didn’t agree with him and let my kids try and drag my ex into a conflict like this.

Anyone have experience?

Advice Basic Internet Safety

My stepson is a tween, and this has been an issue for years but it’s just getting worse as he gets older (unsurprisingly.) His parents are in a nasty custody battle (HCBM wants to live off child support and my partner just wants his kids equal time and to be able to afford that) and he currently is at his mom’s much more than at our home. His mom doesn’t want to parent and is much more interested in her own life than her children. Thus, there is zero internet safety when it comes to the children.

This was one thing while they were young but as you’d imagine, step son is getting curious about things. For over a year my partner has been begging HCBM to put any kind of safety filters and effective passcodes on her electronics but she refuses or says she will and never does etc.

Lately, step son has been getting into trouble, including lots of sneaking around deleting history on devices at her house. She’s caught him with porn before. He’s been talked to by both parents. When he’s at our home he has zero access to unrestricted internet. It’s all very monitored and timed. We parent. But his mom doesn’t. So it just gets worse at her house. She screams and punishes but doesn’t actually put guardrails on anything and is constantly disgusted when stepson sneaks around and watches porn and god knows what else.

Well, now she’s found on a lesser-used device of her‘s an extensive history he forgot to clear of porn - including cam girls. This child is not even a teenager yet. Of course she demands his dad talk to him about it. And again he begs her to monitor step son’s Internet usage. She won’t put in the effort to protect him from unrestricted internet. This creates a cycle of damage control at our home and then back to mom’s house to acquire more damage we then have to deal with. (As you can imagine that extends to more than just Internet issues.) You would think anyone in the courts would care about this but it seems that HCBM can do whatever she wants with zero consequences or repercussions. (a theme with her.)

Have any of you dealt with this, and do any of you have advice for a situation like this?

Just struggling a bit and wanted to share. My partner and I have been together for three years. He’s got an amazing 10 year old. I consider myself fortunate that he’s such an awesome little kid and we’ve got a good relationship. He’s really become part of my family.

His mom doesn’t collaborate with my partner well, to the extent that we had to go court to get more time with him. She didn’t engage in mediation and spent the court process trying to tear down my partners character and parenting abilities. My partners stance was that she was a fine mom, but didn’t want him to be in his son’s life. We ended up winning lots more time with his son in court, but not 50/50.

It’s a year into the court order and basic scheduling is like pulling teeth. My wider family live thousands of miles away, so they go to lengths to get time with my SS. We have only one week a year where the whole family gets together, which our kid came to this year. We’re putting it together and his mom doesn’t want to give us the time with him. Even with the court order, it feels like things are done by her permission, not as parents with joint custody, and it denies a kid family that he loves (even if the whole step thing is unconventional.)

It tough. I love our family and what it’s grown into. It frustrates me that I don’t expect of her. I feel for my SS- we’d never talk poorly of his mom in front of him. It’s tough when it feels like she devalues our family.

Advice Help setting boundaries re mother of kids and new partner

Looking for some support. Dad here, have 2 kids under 10. The kids’ mom and I have had a troubled relationship full of ups and downs even after we separated. No official court order or even a formal parenting plan, but we are now doing week on week off. Both our families live out of state so we are kind of on our own. We were also sharing a dog and cat going back and forth between houses but stopped doing that recently, now the animals stay with me full time, because she didn’t want them anymore.

I don’t have a good history with boundaries. I haven’t always been honest. I carry some guilt for how I treated her in the past. She is also fairly emotionally unstable and has caused me a lot of distress over 15 years. We both caused problems and hurt each other.

We’ve been separated for 2 years, the first year we played family for a while doing more stuff together with the kids but living separately, but now things are more separated. I am moving in with my new partner who was a friend for a long time prior, knows my kids well, and is amazing with them, they love her and are excited to live with her, and I feel blessed by all this. No, not an affair, we just found this path.

My ex is unsurprisingly not happy about any of it.

My partner has always been friendly to her despite internally not liking her, and has never said any bad things about her around the kids, very respectful and educated about how to do all this stuff well. My partner and I are on a path to have a child together in the next year and make a life of our own. My ex doesn’t know that but honestly I have kept a lot hidden because I don’t want her to unleash on me and have it affect the kids.

Mom of the kids is asking to see my/our new house, wants freedom to come in and out, generally likes to talk to me about what’s going on in her life, wants to know about my life and relationship, calls and texts all the time, makes comments about me in front of my partner to cause drama. On its face not anything that bad, but she has also been very manipulative and tried to sabotage my relationship. She also does not understand boundaries or respect them. She has thrown huge fits and threatened legal action when she doesn’t get what she wants. My partner is trying to be flexible but struggling, not okay with a lot of the communication and physicalities (ex always makes a point to hug me in front of her and our kids for example) and is asking me to set better emotional and physical boundaries with the mother of my kids. She doesn’t want any drama or hostility but is asking for clear, consistent boundaries, and says that will help our relationship grow, and it could enable friendship with my kids mom over time, which is what I want, for things to be easy. Partner doesn’t understand why this is so hard for me. I don’t know how to move forward I feel totally lost.

I really don’t understand boundaries honestly. I didn’t grow up with any of this and I don’t know how to set them. They feel mean to me like shutting someone out and it throws me into a dark fearful place. I can’t have a bad relationship with the mom of my kids. But it’s hurting my partner and my relationship and the life I want to pursue.

Throwing this out there in case someone has experience and might be able to guide. Would appreciate help figuring out how to set boundaries with the mother of my kids in this context and still aim for having a respectful friendship, since I really don’t want drama and can’t bring it around the kids.

Thank you

Advice Left alone with stepson

DH14 and I have been together for 2 years and married since July. He has SS14 and SD20. SD20 has a strained relationship with her father due to the divorce and his past treatment of her, but the son comes every other weekend max, many times skipping a weekend. DH has a “fun job” bartending at college football games that isn’t necessary for us to stay financially afloat. The games always seem to line up when his son comes. So he will pick his son up late Friday, go to dinner, watch tv and go to sleep, wake up and drive to the stadium an hour from our house, and is normally there until about 9 cleaning up. This leaves me with his son all day long. His son can’t make basic foods and just hogs the living room tv all day long on my one day of the week off to relax (I’m a lawyer and often work weekends.) He doesn’t leave his son easy to prepare microwave foods so I end up cooking all meals and buying all groceries and cooking basically all day. To be clear, it’s not his son’s fault at ALL. I can’t imagine having my child 3 days a month and skipping the only full day to make “fun money” and I have expressed this. It’s not like I have to babysit, but it’s completely unfair to me and his son. I know his son feels just as sad and enforceable as I do. Any words of advice?

Support At what point should you get some concern about stepchildren who have “crushes” on each other?

My SD (6) lives with her stepbrother (10) when at her mother’s house. She told me in confidence this morning that they have “crushes” on each other and have been “kissing on the lips” but begged me not to tell her parents.

I am going to tell my husband after they’re in bed, but not sure if I should encourage him to raise it with their mom. It’s a very high conflict relationship and I am sure she will be angry at us and say we’re “accusing” her stepson of something.

I haven’t come across this before and I’m not sure if this is a typical and totally innocent thing or if this is a cause for concern. I know grooming and inappropriate touching does happen between step siblings but have no way of knowing whether that’s happening here or likely to happen. I’ve only met the kid once at her birthday party and he just seemed like a totally normal kid, so I don’t want to upset the apple cart over nothing.

Support Does it ever get easier?

I've been with my partner for almost 5 years. We're long distance and I've put in a lot of effort into the relationship over the years. Driving to see him because he has a son. I've tried for years to engage with his son, who is now 16. Asking questions about school, hobbies, friends. I rarely get more than a few words back. When we're all out together as a "family", he'll start conversation with his dad and I'll do my best to join in but I'm never invited to the conversation. Dinners and car rides are awkward. I rack my brains for things to ask, it's definitely got harder.

We're away this week all 3 of us and it's been one of the worse weeks I've experienced. I've cried a lot. My partner has snapped at me for not putting the effort in and also because his son doesn't put the effort in. But at no point will he say to his son to put effort in. I have asked questions, I have tried to initiate conversation. I've had zero answers this week. We went to see a film, I asked what he thought of it, he didn't reply. Looked at me then carried on playing on his phone. There's a point when you can only do so much and I'm exhausted. My partner has said we're not going away all together again and I agree because I dont want to be in this situation again but there is a huge divide.

I'm struggling to see that at any point it'll get easier. He's the type of parent where his son is smart and can do no wrong. There's plenty of wrongs but me crying will get ushered into the next room to prevent his sensitive son from hearing it. When he's the reason I'm crying, because I've been told off for his lack of effort. I love my partner, I wouldnt put the effort in if I didn't but I'm tired and not sure where to go from this.

Advice Step Ex

Does anyone feel like they’ve taken on not only Step Children, but the Ex Partner as well? The WHOLE package. I have recently just woken up to the whole dynamic. I didn’t realise how much some Ex partners are still so dominant in each others lives. Is this a deal breaker? It is really quite a dark dismal reality dealing with this when you step back and look at it. Even if you love someone dearly.

“ Thank you everyone. I got great insight, validation and clarity. I’ll be requesting boundaries or I’m just going to leave the blended family world. It’s just not for me. 🙏

Vent SO Halloween festivities

So my S0 has cptsd and freaked out on me about casually mentioning that I can drive separate for the Halloween trick or treating portion since his son was invited to go back to his friends house for a party after we all trick of treat together. I said. Maybe I shoukd head home since he has a play date after. He got so angry and even through some stuff in th home toward me but not at me.

My kids are grown adults. One is dependent on me while in college so life stages are totally off. So I sencond guess if I want to keep up with this relationship.

We talked later on and I said if its that important why don't you express that youd like me to tag along to all the festivities.

I feel like I cant express thoughts here. Makes me feels unsafe.

I already dont feel safe hanging around his ex because he lacks boundaries with her and im trying to protect myself from getting disregulated there. Friday afternoon we have to go to the kids parade then take the child home. Then Saturday to soccer then to halloween festivities by night. Thats alot for me. His child has ahdh and over stimulates me as is. I cant help this.

He asked me to go to a boy scout activity on the sunday after Halloween. I was like thats a hard No. I will be burnt the fuck out from his child for 2 days and all the other children and festivities. If I make it through the weekend I may end up not coming back. Ever.
