Can people really not see well enough to need their led headlights while the sun is out? What is going on

History October 28, 1965: the Arch's last piece wouldn't fit. The sun had expanded the south leg, and firefighters hosed the steel until it shrank.

It wasn't a warm day, but the south leg had been in direct sun since dawn, and the warm side grew. Thermal expansion had closed the 8.5-foot gap at the top by five inches. They moved the insertion thirty minutes early to get ahead of it, and the fire department sprayed the south leg down to cool the steel and make it contract. The keystone went in at 9:30 in the morning, took thirteen minutes, and was secured by noon.

Here's what the day itself felt like:

Clear and cold at first light, the air near 37°F with a north breeze that had blown all night. The sun climbed into an empty sky and the day warmed slowly to near 49° by mid-afternoon, the air dry and the light hard. Cloud drifted over for an hour or two near dusk and left again. The evening was clear and the cold came back quickly, near 35° by late.

Gateway Arch Topped Out • Dayfall.app

An empty sky all morning is the whole reason there was a problem.

I’m not from St. Louis. I’ve been building something that pulls historical weather records for specific days. This is one of the few I’ve found where the weather is the reason something happened.

Note: The photo is from September 4th 1965, about eight weeks before the last piece went in so the gap is larger than just the keystone.

Went to a show at Off Broadway* and saw this skull with really bolty looking SS’s in the glasses, is this parody or was there a notsee at the show? He had a mask on and left early.

Edit: I alerted the light guy and front desk. I asked three people at the show if I was overreacting. I also group chatted my close friends and they didn’t even know what a totenkopf was. Fuck that guy

Second edit: Free Palestine and fuck bigots in all their forms.

Why Can’t Ann Wagner Run On Her Record?

It is pretty obvious Ann Wagner is not running on her record of taking care of the rich while ignoring the needs of the 44,000 people living in poverty in the district, or keeping the Federal Minimum Wage at $7.25, or taking healthcare away from millions of people. Her strategy is to hide and’ bombard the TV with culture war attack adds that are so over the top you’d think you are watching a SNL skit.

WELLMAN is a Patriot that put his life on the line for this country every day in combat in a war zone. In 30 seconds on any day of any of his 4 Combat tours, he has demonstrated more bravery, courage, and honor than Trump has in his lifetime. How are those bone spurs doing, Mr. President?

Attacking a West Point grad, career military with 22 years, 4 combat tours, for hating the police, for Transexuals in sports, blah, blah, blah, is shameful and dishonest. But that is the best Wagner can do while running away from her disgraceful record. She doesn’t serve the 2nd District, she serves Donald Trump and does so with glee.

I found a green Taiwanese passport in Forest Park today, beside Round Lake. I've already left my name and number with lost and found at the park, and I'm contacting Wash U to see if it belongs to a student. But if anyone can further help me get the passport back to its owner, please let me know.

UPDATE: PASSPORT RETURNED!

Brentwood, Missouri has designated blocks of the Manchester Road Corridor as blighted, a first step in an envisioned plan to redevelop the neighborhood. Several small businesses are fighting those blight designations in court with the Institute for Justice (IJ) to prevent their locations from being subject to eminent domain.

Politics St. Louis Daily Newsletter: Democrats' Hope Soar Over CD 2 Polling

• Upvotes

Source: https://info.stlmag.com/daily-newsletter-102826

Another day, another indication of a tightening race in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District. Yesterday, acclaimed pollster Larry Sabato moved the race from "leans Republican" to “tossup." Perhaps not coincidentally, incumbent U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner (R-Ballwin), who’s held the seat for 13  years, has been hammering Democrat Fred Wellman in TV ads that show him describing himself as a “liberal” and a “progressive.” In a recent interview with St. Louis Public Radio’s Jason Rosenbaum, Wagner professed to have no regrets on her votes against curbing Trump’s war powers, despite the unpopularity of the ongoing war with Iran. “I believe that this will come to a quick end,” she told Rosenbaum. —S.F.

Thoughts on Blues Protest Being Called Anti-Semitic

I heard on morning radio today a DJ saying the Blues made a statement about a "terrible Anti-Semitic sign" being brought into the Blues game. He said he wouldn't even repeat what the sign said, because it was so Anti-Semitic.

I looked it up for myself, curious. What I saw said the sign said "Israel kills" and "Free the US from Israel."

I mean this with all respect for Jewish people, but I do not understand how signs against the government of Israel are Anti-Semitic? I am a white Christian, and I don't think protest signs against the US are anti-white or anti-Christian. I know there are a sizable number of Jewish people in the US who are against Israel's actions in Palestine.

What are other people's thoughts?

Hello St. Louis Reddit,

My partner and I make catnip filled "toasted ravioli" and thought I would share on here! You will find my partner most weekend at Tower Grover Farmer's, but this is the last weekend for regular market. We have gotten our website up and running if you're unable to make it to market or would like to send some to a loved kitty elsewhere!

Our cat toys are made as sustainably as possible. Secondhand felt from City Sewing Room and organic catnip from Local Harvest.

Hope to see you at market this weekend!

Ask STL What are your opinions on the now U/C Chesterfield downtown.

I love the new investment but wish it was a bit bigger. It feels more like a tiny subdivision of tall apartments/office buildings with a park mixed in than a proper downtown.

And it’s already getting watered down (lowering density for single family homes).

But I’d love to know your opinions/thoughts.

Construction/Development News Jamestown mall plans call for 700 McBride homes including single-family homes, villas, townhomes and multi-family residences that could house around 2,000 residents, retail shops, restaurants, a grocery store and more

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Major redevelopment plans are moving forward for the former Jamestown Mall site in north St. Louis County. New plans call for 700 homes, retail shops, restaurants, a grocery store and more.
Jamestown Mall closed doors more than a decade ago, and crews completed demolition of the former mall last year. Since then, developers and regional leaders have considered solutions to revitalize the site.

On Tuesday, McBride Homes announced it signed an agreement with the St. Louis County Port Authority to serve as master developer of the former mall site.
The agreement calls for a mixed-use community with more than 700 new homes, including single-family homes, villas, townhomes and multi-family residences that could house around 2,000 residents.

Plans also call for neighborhood retail, at least one grocery store, restaurants and a connected network of community amenities.

“North St. Louis County is one of the first communities McBride started in, nearly 80 years ago, and we’ve never stopped building here,” said Jake Eilermann, CEO of McBride Homes via a news release. “This site has been waiting a long time for the right plan. We’re glad to bring new homes and the everyday places a neighborhood needs back to it, and we’re grateful to Ambassador Kevin F. O’Malley, Chair of the County Port Authority, and Councilwoman Webb for the trust they’ve placed in us.”

McBride Homes says it will work with St. Louis County Councilwoman Shalonda Webb to shape a vision for development, including an emphasis on youth sports amenities.

“For years, people in this community have asked what would happen with this site, and they’ve been clear about what they want to see: quality homes, a grocery store and places for families and young people to gather,” said Webb, District 4 Councilwoman. “This plan reflects what our residents asked for, and I’m looking forward to meeting with the residents to discuss a name.”

McBride Homes estimates construction could take around eight years, with roughly 70 homes and supporting amenities being built each year.

Once occupied, the community is expected to support more than 300 jobs and generate $3.7 million in local tax and government revenue, according to McBride Homes.
It remains to be determined when construction could begin at the former mall site and whether any additional procedural steps are needed before redevelopment can move forward.
