I remember being a kid growing up without extra money. I got a Christmas one year because the church sponsored our family, we had actual roaches that would eat our food if we left it unattended in our own home, the bullying at school (one year from a teacher), endless expectation that you would do better than your parents, etc...
Well I did. I have a household income of over $130k between my husband and I, own a 2,000+ sqft home and get to travel to see friends who moved away. I finally made it happen and decide to get into hobbies I wanted to get into as a kid such as TCG or Disney collectables or video games.
Everything is being scalped. I couldn't get my hands on anything without paying a stupid amount of money for it. It wasn't just limited to hobbies either. When my husband and I had a baby, we discovered that he had to be on a specific formula. I would go to the store and try to get it, but it was always sold out. I saw a woman (noticed her because of her cart + the pink/yellow hair she had) at the check-out with the entire inventory of this formula. I asked her if I could have just one can, and she said "for $80 you can." I was horrified.
I started joining online mom groups for my area, trying to offer free photography shoots in exchange for cans of formula. Found this same lady in there reselling the formula for $80 a can (she paid $32 at the time). Then this continued for Millie Moon diapers, the only brand that didn't cause issues for my son. Again, always sold out on shelves but always available online in our local mom groups for double the price.
This lady had the audacity to tell me she was a single mother and this is how she supported herself and her kids. She had to create a business, and she was just being entrepreneur and that I shouldn't be so upset when supporting a "local small business".
Turned to online big box stores, had a subscription for formula and diapers set up but even online these stores were always sold out. It was insane to think I couldn't even care for my own child because people were scalping baby formula and diapers.
So not only could I not get into any hobbies, I couldn't even take care of my kid because of scalpers. Want to play TCG (not just collect, actually go to a local shop and play it with friends to save your sanity from being a parent all day?) gotta pay a premium for that on top of it already being a luxury to have the extra money to pay retail for it. Want a spirit jersey to wear to work or Disney Ears for your Disney wall at the office so you don't have to stare at blank walls all day? "oh we aren't scalpers. We are personal shoppers with a fee and you also have to pay S&H on top of the "processing" fee of your payment through cash app."
want to feed and diaper your kid so they don't starve or sit in their own mess and get sick? gotta pay a "local small business" for that at double the price.
Then the issues with the gaming industry on top of all that is another story. I had paid for the same game three times because the license kept expiring before I finally gave up on playing video games. And no, it wasn't pirated or anything. I bought it from the online store from my console and the third time on the computer through steam and it still wouldn't stop expiring so it didn't even matter where I was playing the game either.
there's just not any more joy in life at this point. You can't afford hobbies because of scalpers. You can't afford a kid because of scalpers. You can't afford video games because of how pricey everything is, scalped consoles and even this new "you don't actually own anything" mentality the industry has.
Reselling should require a permit, even if it's some "single parent just trying to earn some cash" and it should be regulated. It's gotten so out of hand across all industries from entertainment to basic needs that someone needs to either ban it altogether or penalize people for overdoing it.
As a kid, I had nothing. As an adult with adult money, it still feels like I'm that kid being told "oh sorry, you don't have enough for that in your piggy bank." when I literally have $100 for a $30 item but they want $300 for it.
and lastly, I shouldn't have to wait 2 hours in line for my coffee just because the company wants to give away nee-dohs with coffee purchases. Get over yourselves already and get real jobs, not some fake online business you think you deserve to have just because you have the free time to stalk isles like a creep for toys when real parents with real full-time jobs that keep them from being able to just go and get it from the store are just trying to make their kids happy and their own lives a bit more bearable when they actually do have time to themselves. Resellers, "legitimate business" or not are just a scummy as anyone else who takes advantage of other people.
Anyway, now that I've got that out of the way. Back to making people more money than they need and paying me as little as possible to create bigger profits for themselves while I'm just trying to make enough money to pay $80 for a $32 can of formula for my kid because someone else is allergic to getting a job.
