Discussion Plex fires the player team right after dropping this

Post image
581 Upvotes

Their AI slop client doesn't know how to display the folder view interface with landscape thumbnails, and results in everything overlapping in a mess. Bonus points for not being able to scroll vertically at all to anything offscreen!

Bought Plezy; its browse interface is tedious for large/nested folders - but at least it's functional.

EDIT: I suppose worth noting (based on the comments) that we don't know if this is AI or not; I said that because I read it around here, but it is just speculation. It follows the general pattern we've seen of a lot of... Let's just say "accelerated" development. Whether it's bad management, uncritical use of AI, lack of testing, whatever - the proof is in the results. And they're not pretty.

EDIT2: This is the folder-browsing interface, designed for libraries that don't have a metadata agent. So this is not a movie or tv show library, but a folder of various random bits from YouTube, Reddit, etc. That probably wasn't clear with folders like "Disney", "Pixar", etc, but this is NOT a movies library.

Discussion What does it mean exactly, that Plex has laid off the entire player team?

Edit to add: I know what being laid off means, lol. What I’m asking is what the implications of this layoff might be?

———

Stumbled onto this post. The entire player team was laid off?

Since posting this I’ve spoken to other developers on the team, and it turns out they’ve laid off the entire player team, including the most senior player engineers there. People who have been holding that side of the product up for years.

I genuinely don’t understand the thinking. The player is the product. If the video doesn’t start, doesn’t seek, or doesn’t recover from a bad network, nothing else on the roadmap matters. I’m not sure what path they’re taking from here.

Plexamp v4.50.21-beta.4

Out now on the desktop beta channel, TestFlight and Play testing. The main one: Plexamp no longer sometimes stalls for several seconds as it starts.

Added

  • Desktop: an artist page shows the artist’s style and country beside their name.
  • Desktop: the buttons over an artist’s, album’s or playlist’s art sit on translucent circles and light up under the pointer.

Fixed

  • Plexamp no longer sometimes freezes for several seconds as it starts.
  • Desktop: dropping a track you’ve dragged in the queue no longer plays the track it lands on.
  • Windows: WASAPI output plays on DACs that stayed silent, such as the Scarlett 2i2 and Xonar Essence STX.
  • iOS: AirPlay volume shows the speaker’s real level straight away.
  • iOS: on iPad, the Top Albums and Top Artists grids fill the width.
  • CarPlay: no longer crashes when two screens open at once.

Help Help for parents cabin

All,

My parents bought a cabin this summer and they get zero TV reception and barely a cellular connection (usually 1 bar of LTE). Spectrum was supposed to be coming through by this fall but I just found out that is now delayed until at least spring. I need to get them something they can watch up there without internet required. Right now they have an old VCR that the previous owners left behind and they are sick of watching the same video cassettes over and over. I would love to gift them at least a stand alone library of something they can watch and maybe even bring back home so it can update on their internet at home. I live 2 hours from their cabin and over an hour away from their home. They are retirement age so it has to be senior proof.

I own a lifetime plex license that I'm not using. Any suggestions at all? It doesn't have to be super high quality, I would just like to give them some chances until they get internet for streaming.

The other challenge is how to get them the content.

I'm techie...I just don't do any of this stuff. I'm corporate network techie.

Help Apple TV 3rd gen- Sudden, random bouts of audio + video choppiness / slowdown

An issue that has been occurring with the new player. At any given time, the video will slow down about 2x, get choppy, and the audio becomes choppy as well. This is what results (each one random)

  • If I let it play through for a few seconds, it may resolves itself
  • If I seek back 5 seconds and play, it fixes it. Sometimes it doesn't help
  • Worst is it will completely kill all audio. I have to exit Plex and turn my ATV off and then back on

The weirdest part is how random it is. It doesn't tend to occur during motion-heavy scenes. and it never happens twice for the exact same spot.

Not sure how much it matters, but the chain is: Unraid box > (ethernet cable) > Verizon CHR30A Router > (wifi) ATV > Denon receiver > LGC8

I feel it's a pretty common setup, so I'm pretty stumped.

Help Moved PMS from one PC to another - Launching directly Unauthorized?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I moved my Plex Media Server from an older computer to a newer one - copying the entire folder as well as the Registry as Plex officially outlines. In doing so, and after rescanning the library, everything works perfectly - I can play everything from my other devices, log into Plex.tv no problem.

My only minor issue is that if I double click the Plex icon in the system tray for the server on the computer, it opens the browser with the URL starting with http://127.0.0.1:32400/myplex/launch?X-Plex-Token= and I get an Unauthorized page. I have tried signing out and back in and restarting multiple times, but it does not have any effect. Does anyone here know what could fix it? As I said, this is a minor issue, but would like to get it resolved.

Tips Keep 'Resolution Switching' switched off at all times, otherwise the Chromecast-app will crash when trying to play any SD-content.

Post image
4 Upvotes

I was genuinely shocked that this was the culprit. I had been experimenting in the settings and suddenly, no SD content would be playing. My TV would flick like it changed a channel, and then the Plex-startup logo popped up. And when I tried again, it did it yet again.

This string of updates is an absolute disgrace. Nothing more, nothing less.

Help Suddenly getting errors

I'm suddenly getting errors watching videos that I had no issues playing before

The console is showing me this errors:

Google isn't really giving me a lot to go on.

I'm getting this on a lot of different files, 4k, 1080, h264, h265. I seem to be luckier with older files, but new ones are giving me issues.

They play with no issue in Jellyfin, only Plex

Any ideas on what to do with this one? This is across multiple devices. The only place that it seems to work is the Plex desktop app.

Help Roku Ultra can’t play most of my Plex library, but iPhone/Fire TV work perfectly. I’m stumped.

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve spent hours troubleshooting this and could really use some help before I return the Roku.

My setup:
• Server: Plex Media Server 1.43.5.11079 on a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max (64GB RAM)
• Storage: External 14TB HDD
• Problem client: Roku Ultra 4850X, Roku OS 16.0, Plex app 9.20.12.12103
• Working clients: iPhone Plex app, Panasonic Fire TV
• Also problematic: Plex Web on the MacBook itself
• All devices are on the same local network.

The problem:
Most movies I’ve tested on the Roku either buffer indefinitely or fail to start. A few movies play perfectly.
Here’s the bizarre part: I can play these same movies in 4K HDR (HEVC Main 10, AAC 7.1) on my iPhone, scrub anywhere in the movie instantly, and experience zero buffering.
Plex Dashboard confirms Direct Play for BOTH video and audio on the iPhone.
Meanwhile, the Roku can’t even play the 1080p HEVC version reliably.

What the logs show:
• Roku reports: Problematic AAC stream with more than 2 channels.
• Plex chooses Direct Stream/transcoding instead of Direct Play.
• Roku repeatedly times out requesting start.mkv.
• Server logs show transcoding sessions producing 0 bytes before terminating.
• The problem persists with subtitles completely disabled.

What I’ve tried:
Reinstalling Plex Media Server, reinstalling the Roku app, disabling hardware acceleration, changing Roku audio settings, forcing Direct Play, disabling Direct Stream, reducing playback quality, and restarting everything.
Nothing has consistently resolved it.

My questions:
1. Does this sound like a Plex Media Server transcoder issue, a Roku compatibility problem, or both?
2. Why would the Roku struggle with files that an iPhone can Direct Play effortlessly?
3. Is there a specific server log entry or diagnostic I should investigate next?
I’m happy to share client/server logs.
I’ve got a Halloween movie marathon with friends this Friday, and I’m seriously considering returning the Roku.

Any insight would be hugely appreciated!

Help Can't change language on downloaded files.

I can’t change the language on any of my downloaded files on either my iPad or my Samsung tablet. I still have the option to but the language will stay the same as the default. Happened about a month ago and applied to everything, even files I already had downloaded.

I can still change the language when not watching from my downloads.

Help Fire TV: Server transcodes DTS-HD MA to AAC

Anyone else having this issue? My setup can play the DTS Core however Plex flags it as a banned codec on the device. It's not that big of a deal but on some movies AAC 5.1 sounds really bad

Help Frame rate matching on chromecast 4k and 25/50fps content issue

Since the new update, I have a problem with refresh rate matching.

I use the chromecast 4k with match frame rate enabled in the Android options, as well as Auto resolution and refresh, connected to a Denon receiver and a Sony TV.

If I enable refresh rate switch in Plex, the tv keeps going black screen from time to time for a couple of sec, like it is switching frame rate, but only if the content is 25FPS or 50FPS. It can happen once every 10 minutes, as well as once ever 30 sec, it seems random.

On other contents FPS, 23, 24, 23something, everything works fine, tested for hours and hours, no drops.

I played with all the options and still no luck. Only way to avoid this behavior is to disable match frame rate on Plex.

Anyone has the same issue and found a solution?

I will also open a thread on Plex forum.

Help Does anyone have any solution to Plex constantly crashing on the Xbox Series S?

For the last month or so every time I use Plex on my Xbox Series S on my downstairs TV it will start streaming and then after 10-15 minutes it will start buffering until the app crashes. If I back out and resume the show before the buffering results in a crash, it lets me watch another 10-15 minute before doing the same thing. Not sure if it’s just a general bug or an issue on my end. The TV is an old Vizio TV if that has any impact this issue only happens with the Xbox Series S used on that TV.

News Caldera Music v1.2.0-beta.9 Released

Caldera v1.2.0-beta.9

A beta of every Caldera player:

  • Headless v1.2.0-beta.9
  • Amp v1.2.0-beta.9 (macOS, Windows, Linux)
  • Apple TV v1.2.1 (build 51), TestFlight
  • Google TV v1.2.0 (versionCode 29), Play beta

The Apple TV and Google TV builds reach testers once Apple and Google finish reviewing them.

New

  • A visualizer showing another room’s music can meter each channel’s level and show when the music overloads, reading the same as on the room itself. (Headless)
  • A visualizer showing another room’s music can ask that room which notes are sounding, across the mix and in the bass alone, so it can follow the key. (Headless)
  • Now Playing shows lyrics, with a lyrics button beside the visualizer button. Timed lyrics follow the song and you can pick a line to play from it, and lyrics from your own files stay on from track to track. (Apple TV, Google TV)
  • Artist pages show albums, EPs, singles and other releases in a grid, with See All when a section runs past three rows. The artist’s … menu switches between grid and carousel. (Apple TV, Google TV)
  • Settings has a Loved Presets Only switch, so the visualizer rotates through only the presets you’ve loved. (Apple TV, Google TV)
  • Settings has a Show Visualizer switch, so the visualizer can stay off. (Apple TV, Google TV)

Fixed

  • The signal path shows the volume as a step whenever it is below 100%, including when the track is also resampled. (Amp, Apple TV)
  • The artist photo blurs as soon as you scroll into an artist’s releases, not two rows later. (Apple TV)
  • Hated presets stay out of the visualizer’s rotation on Google TV, and on Apple TV no longer come back after changing Preset Quality. (Apple TV, Google TV)
  • The visualizer button in the player shows whether the visualizer is on or off, and the label above the buttons follows it (and Play/Pause) as it changes. (Google TV)

Help Help! Buffering issues out of knowhere

Wondering if anyone has any fixes or can help me resolve this issue!

I have a plex media server running on a DS423+ NAS and I have have a lifetime plex pass, I have a relatively large media collection 8TB (ish)

I have a bit of a weird network setup at home as we are limited to a Starlink internet connection. Its currently Starlink > Secondary router (AP mode) via etho > DS423+, PC, TV etc. Other tenants in the house connect to the starlink router via WiFi as one of them owns the connection and when I moved in I added my router via Ethernet so I could use it as a switch but also get a wired connection out to my office which is where the NAS lives. Pretty much all my devices are connected to my office router via ethernet of WiFi.

Plex has been functioning completely fine for the last 6 months, never had an issue playing movies or shows via my Samsung Smart TV (DU8500), been able to play stuff remotely via my phone when I'm away from home via a relay connection. Life's been great!

However..... I went away over the weekend and when I returned, I can't play anything on my TV without it making it 2minutes in and either going to a black screen, buffering and being all stuttery every 10sec or the video seems to pause and the audio continues and then buffers and then plays for 10sec again and then buffers again.

TV is connected via WiFi, the one other person in the house who I shared my library with has no issues playing files via chrome browser on a shitty old iMac and they're connected to the Starlink WiFi network but my TV which is connected via WiFi to the router that is hard linked into the NAS is having issues.

Everything was fine 3 days ago! Hardware acceleration is enabled on the Plex media server, the media server itself is on a secondary m.2 nvme drive in the NAS to try and improve library caching /loading times for meta data.

Surely someone has some tips, trick, or something to help fix this issue, its driving me bonkers. Its happening on files that I have previously played with ZERO issues.

I've tried reinstalling plex on the TV, clearing the data, clearing the cache, restarting the media server, changing WiFi networks, cold restarting the TV. Has the Samsung plex app just completely shit the bed for good?

TL:DR - plex works fine on every device except my TV, Was working fine 3 days ago no buffers, stutters, struggles to make it more than 2 minutes

Discussion No gapless music playback in the new app????

I wanted to make a positive post about how the new app finally gave us multichannel music support on the Shield. Unfortunately it's completely useless as a music player because it doesn't have gapless playback. What the fuck Plex? The old app, while it was stereo only, had gapless playback. Kodi has gapless playback (and multichannel). Every competent music player made since the invention of recorded music has had gapless playback. It's bare minimum basic functionality to play an album the way it was intended.

This is ridiculous.

Help Plex app on Nvidia Shield is forcing me to select "more ways to watch" to get a show to run, for every episode of a show or movie

I never had to select "where to watch" for every episode. I only had to do this once for the show. Since the latest "upgrade" (more like downgrade...) the app forces me to select "more ways to watch to get ever episode to run. Plex is circling the drain...

Edit: The forced selection is actually "where to watch" not "more ways to watch" but its still requiring selecting "where to watch" for every episode.

Help Local server shows up as a remote server

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello, I am new to Plex and I am having issues with the mobile app. I am connected to my home network (the same network as my server) and still, my server shows up as a remote connection on the mobile app. When I’m trying to play something, I get this message saying I have to buy plex pass. I do not have a VPN running on my phone. What might be causing this? And what can I do to fix this?

Edit: Details about my setup: I am running Plex on Casa OS, on an old gaming laptop with Debian 13 OS. The NAS laptop is plugged into my internet router, while all other devices are on WiFi. I have assigned a fixed IP for the NAS laptop. I have not touched any other network settings.

Meta (Plex) Goodbye, DuckDNS, my old friend

Post image
0 Upvotes

After a whitehat broke into my system a couple months back (yay Tautilli for not being updated and had a vulnerability), I slowly have been moving everything to Tailscale except Plex, since it already requires MFA and I use PlexAmp constantly. Got my internet provider changed to one that now apparently puts me behind a CGNAT, so Plex remote access worked for about 6 hours...until I guess the CGNAT rolled the exposed IP? Not entirely sure how CGNAT works, but figured it was time to put my old reliable DuckDNS put to pasture finally and finish getting Tailscale on clients tonight.

Godspeed, DuckDNS - you've served me well for the past 7 years 🫡
