Sonarr v5 - Now in BETA!

1.2k Upvotes

Almost 2 years since Sonarr v4 released, we are ready to announce that the Sonarr v5 beta is launching, and its big! At almost 1000 commits by almost 100 contributors we are ready to open up v5 to users for beta testing.

Competition

To celebrate this milestone we're launching a community competition, giving our users the chance to be part of Sonarr forever by suggesting your own ICONIC loading message! Submissions of loading messages are open for 4 weeks, and can be submitted via this Google Form.

After submissions are closed our dev team will shortlist our favourite suggestions and then open them up to community voting. The top chosen results will be added to Sonarr in time for the final v5 launch!

Major Changes

There are many changes to both the front end UI as well as the backend system, including some long desired features. As such downgrading back to v4 is not possible unless you restore a v4 backup. Here is a summary of things that are changing:

User Interface

  • Completely redesigned UI - A refreshed, more modern interface with improved navigation, layouts, tables, dialogs, and responsive behaviour.
  • Improved accessibility - Better keyboard navigation, focus handling, labels, screen-reader support, and accessible controls throughout the application.
  • New Statistics page - Get an overview of your library and its contents.

See a preview of the UI here: https://imgur.com/a/73T072h

TVDB Metadata

  • Language Metadata - Sonarr can now utilize metadata from TVDB in languages other than English. Choose which metadata language you want to use per series
  • Series Ordering - Use other series orders on TVDB, eg DVD orders or Streaming orders. This is defined when adding a series to Sonarr.

Search & Releases

  • Prevent grabs before airdate - Define whether Sonarr should download releases before its official air date via Release Profiles.
  • Improved Interactive Search - More detailed release information and clearer explanations of why releases are accepted or rejected. Results are now virtualized, so no more UI hanginging when there are many results, and an ability to filter them on title.
  • Improved season pack handling - Better support for season packs, including the ability to grab season packs before a season has completely aired, and the ability to define when a season pack should replace single episodes.
  • Improved multi-season releases - Better handling and matching of releases containing episodes from multiple seasons.
  • More powerful Release Profiles - Apply a Release Profile to multiple indexers, giving you more control over where release restrictions and preferences apply.
  • Improved release parsing - Better handling of difficult release names, non-ASCII release groups, multi-season releases, multi-episode releases, and many many other edge cases.
  • Improved anime searching - search for and parse season aliases, without season numbers and without duplicating season numbers. Only search for anime season packs after a season has aired fully, reducing API hits and improving performance.

Downloads

  • Malicious Extensions - prevent torrents containing malicious file extensions from being sent to the download client.
  • Queue Grouping - Only show one entry on the activity queue for multi-episode releases.
  • Qbittorrent Tagging - Optionally add a series' tags to qbittorrent when grabbing a release.

Library & Statistics

  • Custom Wanted filters - Create filters for Missing and Cutoff Unmet episodes to quickly find exactly what you're looking for.
  • More detailed media information - See information for multiple audio and subtitle streams instead of only a single stream.
  • Improved media detection - Updated media probing and FFprobe handling provide more accurate information about files.

Security & Networking

  • Basic authentication - Basic auth has been removed for security reasons, forms auth is now the default.
  • OIDC authentication - New OIDC auth options.
  • Lockout and Password Recovery - too many failed login attempts will now lock Sonarr and require a password reset.
  • Improved IPv4/IPv6 connectivity - Better address selection and Happy Eyeballs support for environments using both IPv4 and IPv6.

API & Integrations

  • New API v5 - A new API version to work with the different metadata languages and series orders.
  • Expanded API functionality - New and updated endpoints expose functionality added throughout Sonarr v5.

Under the Hood

  • .NET 10 - we're making the jump from .NET 6 all the way to .NET 10.
  • Modernized frontend - The frontend has been updated with modern tooling, including the move from Webpack to Vite.
  • Migration to typescript - the frontend has been fully migrated from Javascript to Typescript.
  • Performance and reliability improvements - Hundreds of smaller changes improve database handling, networking, parsing, importing, searching, and overall reliability.

And much more

Sonarr v5 contains hundreds of additional fixes and improvements across indexers, download clients, notifications, metadata, Custom Formats, Quality Profiles, Import Lists, localization, API endpoints, and more.

Still Coming

There are some additional features that are still in progress:

  • TMDb Metadata support - An alternative to TheTVDB, use it for all or some of your series.
  • A redesigned main page in Sonarr - Will provide a quick overview of things and during initial setup provided a more streamlined setup.
  • Further Multi-Season Support - Improved handling of multi-season releases
  • Extended malicious file extensions handling - Improved handling of torrents with blocked files - Block downloading of certain files at the client level and still let Sonarr handle treat it as failed (starting with qBit)

How To Upgrade

V5 beta has now been pushed to the develop branch. Updates will happen differently depending on how you have Sonarr installed on your system.

  • Docker container providers will update their :develop tag to v5 (Hotio and Linuxserver.io have been informed)
  • Native versions for Windows, MacOS and Linux have been published and are available to download from sonarr.tv. They will need to be downloaded and installed manually, updates will not happen via Sonarr.

Make sure to make a backup in v4 first before upgrading to v5 incase anything goes wrong and you need to roll back.

Issues when upgrading

Due to multiple database migrations it can be possible that some corrupt databases that were doing OK in v4 may have broken in v5. We don't expect this to be as frequent as happened between v3 to v4. You can try to follow our corrupt database repair guide https://wiki.servarr.com/useful-tools#recovering-a-corrupt-db or reach out to one of our Support channels.

unsolved Search not working?

Hi everyone, i have setup an arr stack on my homelab and at first all went smoothly but right now whenever i search for the monitored episodes on sonarr i receive the following message.
Series search completed. 0 reports downloaded.
I dont really get what that means
Is that an indexer issuer or a sonarr issue?
Can that be fixed or is that a wait till it fixes itself issue?
Could someone also explain how the search works on a techincal level?
the indexers are: nzbgeek, althub, nzbplanet, 1337x, extratorrent, kickasstorrents

thank you

unsolved Tool or script to auto-rotate Prowlarr indexer priority by last use?

I run Prowlarr with a mix of public and private torrent indexers synced to Sonarr and Radarr. I'm looking for something that dynamically adjusts indexer priority so private indexers that haven't been grabbed from or queried recently get a higher priority (least-recently-used first). Is there an existing tool or script that does recency-based priority rotation?

unsolved Can't download file if the name contains square brackets. Help?

My use case:
I want to download an episode of a show (this happens on any show). If i use manual interactive search and select for example the top result with the most seeders, it fails, with the error "Failed to connect to qBittorrent, check your settings.".

I keep going down the list and choose one until it works.

However if i go back and manually go to the website that the episode is sourced from, copy the magnet link and put it into qbittorrent manually it works.

The only thing i could assume is causing issues is that it always fails when the torrent name contains square brackets [].

This is irritating because a lot of shows use square brackets for the season or episodes, OR around the host website name.

Is there a way to fix this?

Sonarr version 4.0.20.3014

qBittorrent v5.3.0 (64-bit)

Edit: clarified error

unsolved unsolved: episodes are never auto grabbed

I can't seem to find the setting I missed that has resulted in NO titles automatically grabbing the episode. I have changed so much at this point, I don't know what else to do. I originally set up radarr at the same time, and all my titles that I add auto grab. I would love some help, please.

thank you.

discussion Sonarr deleted thousands of episodes and left my library in tatters.

This morning I went to watch an episode of Ted Lasso and was puzzled when it skipped ahead several episodes. After some investigating I saw that over 50% of Ted Lasso was missing. After more investigating I saw that almost every non-anime show had at least 1 or 2 episodes deleted. Many had way more missing. Only shows that had all of their episodes maxed on quality were sparred.

  1. Sonarr was doing this over the last 30 days. I didn't notice because I have been mostly watching anime or new episodes that just released.

  2. Sonarr had deleted episodes in preparation to import an upgraded version of those episodes.

  3. For some reason the import failed. No reason for the import failure is recorded in the history or logs.

  4. I did not have a recycling bin set up, so I can't recover the deleted episodes from there. My fault, I fixed it.

Anyone else have this issue? Any solution I should enact? Now that the recycling bin is set up, will sonarr revive the old episode if an import fails?

discussion Malware in matched episodes

Somewhat new to the sub here, I haven't used sonarr in a good while, but have steered a lot of my friends towards it, and am wondering if there may be a concerning trend in the making. One of my friends asked if I could help figure out why some of his new episodes wouldn't play, and what I was able to find was that downloads that were being given a normal/high score for relevance with their release profiles (correct languages & etc), but the title of the download as well as the file were a Windows executable (.EXE)

That raised my pucker factor by quite a lot and told him to shut all downloads off and run a malware scan right away, even if he is using TrueNAS the age of AI malware I trust nothing (big part of the reason I stopped using any of the 'arrs). I got on my group chat and asked if anyone else saw this happen and one other found a download with .exe in the filename as well.

I don't think I've seen anyone doing this since Ye Olden Days of Kazaa, are we seeing a return to this kind of thing, and do you suppose that adding "must not" profiles to avoid anything with executable filetypes would be enough to cut a lot of the mess out, and how likely are we to be seeing multi-platform video-based malware in the wild?

solved Sonarr downloads TBA episodes but doesnt import them and require a manual intervention. Is there a way to block pulling TBA episodes even tho they are already released officially?

Right now is happening to black clover but also happened to some other tv shows and animes before. The ep releases but the ep is named TBA on sonarr so once the download is finished sonarr doesnt import the EP cause it doesnt have a name so I have to do it manually.

Are you guys using it in prod yet? I've spun up a different container to check it out, but I'm curious if it's stable enough to run in a prod environment? Would love to hear feedback!

Edit: It seems I have struck a nerve calling it a "prod environment" lol.

Does anyone know why the versioning on Linuxserver.io's Sonarr build rolled over from 4.0.20.3014-ls329 back down to 4.0.20.3014-ls1? Been using their Docker image of Sonarr for a long while and first time I've seen this occur.

discussion Forked Sonarr - Started work with Podarr, the podcast equivalent

Hi! I hope this is a suitable subreddit for this post.

I have just started with this work, and while it still have a lot of "dead" (not used by my project) backendcode, and some frontend stuff, i got it up and running. I am trying to build something in the lines of sonarr, but for podcasts.

I have so far managed to add a indexer through the jackett api (torznab), and for matching podcasts through the free Itunes/Apple podcast api. It then downloads and generates a RSS-feed for your podcasts.

One detailed i noted though, is that my Podcast app (Pocketcast) didnt seem to work with local rss-feeds. So i added the option to add a s3-compatible bucket (Digitalocean, cloudflare etc have their own) to serve the rss-feeds. Which just links to the local ip (or domain in my case, which points to a IP behind tailscale VPN), which seems to work for atleast pocketcast! So no media is getting pushed to the bucket.

As i said, highly work in progress, but suggestions and PRs are highly welcomed!

unsolved Bit of help - Arr stack stop working and I cant figure out where the issue is.

Hi, hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.

I run the Arr stack on an unraid server using the binhex versions of prowlarr, sonarr, radarr, overseer, delugevpn, flaresolverr and plex. This has been set up for about 2 years with no issues.

earlier this week I noticed something had stopped working and I cant get to the bottom of it.

When searching for a show, it immediately showed as nothing found.

When I checked the indexers, they were all down.

In prowlarr, all indexers showing as disabled.

When I test any indexer it gives the following error
"Unable to connect to indexer. This is typically caused by DNS/SSL issues. Check DNS settings, ensure IPv6 is working or disabled, consider using different DNS servers, or try a VPN/proxy if needed. See: 'https://wiki.servarr.com/prowlarr/troubleshooting#dns-ssl-connection-issues' An error occurred while sending the request."

under indexer proxies, flaresolverr fails with the following message

"Unable to connect to proxy: HTTP request failed: [500:InternalServerError] [POST] at [http://192.168.1.106:8191/v1\]. Check the log surrounding this error for details"

I dont think I have changed any settings. followed install guides and everything appears set up as it should and it worked for 2 years, I cant figure out what has broken in the chain.

Hope somebody has an idea,

cheers

unsolved Local Model Setup?

Hi - never had an Arr stack, been a debrid guy so far. Considering going to plex/Jellyfin and arr stack route. Essentially, my goal would be to not have to think about setting up the movies/shows. I was thinking I could set up a local model and I could just text it and have it set up shows/movies for me so they’re ready to go that evening.

However, I don’t know very much about arr stacks. Would I even need to do that local model step, or is it already pretty much that simple to get things set up without using my laptop?

unsolved Frustrated by Seinfeld

I know this is a personal issue, not blaming Sonarr. Sonarr works perfectly 90% of the time but when it comes to older shows, the ordering of aired vs dvd/stream order can really make things annoying and required a lot of manually intervention of opening up each file to see what each file actually is. This is really biting me with Seinfeld right now as in season 3 the two parter The Boyfriend was merged into one episode. So I switched Plex’s ordering to TVDBs stream order. But then I go to download season 4 and it’s downloading the two parters in the aired order and not streamed.

I see here that Sonarr has a beta with an option to specify the ordering now which is great! But even after I delete and reimport Seinfeld with ordering set to stream, I am getting the wrong episodes downloaded and renamed wrong. I’m guessing this is mainly because of my sources and the fact that TVDB still has the combined two part episode listed as The Trip (1) so the search is only coming back with the first half of the episode.

Anyways more of a rant and to get a check to see if I’m doing anything incorrectly or others also struggle with this occasionally?

waiting for op Release Rejected

I have a show that keeps getting rejected:

  • Custom Formats No Audio have score -10000 below Series profile minimum 0
  • Existing file on disk has a equal or higher Custom Format score: 50

I think it might be the Quality Profiles pulled from Dumpstar (using Profilarr), but I am not sure how to resolve this. Looking for suggestions.

external app I made an Android app to manage my Plex + *arr stack and let my family request stuff (looking for testers)

Hey all,

I’ve been working on Rainarr, an Android app for Plex and the *arr stack. It started back in 2020 as a small tool to send movies to my Plex from my phone, and it slowly grew into a real app.

What I spent the most time on is the setup. It finds your services on your network, and one Plex login is enough to pull in Seerr and the keys for Radarr, Sonarr and the rest. It also switches between your local and remote addresses on its own.

As the host you get a home screen with widgets, Seerr requests you can approve with a swipe, your downloads (qBittorrent or Transmission), Tautulli, Prowlarr, Maintainerr and notifications. Your friends and family get their own simpler space: they scan a QR code, request what they want and get a notification when it’s ready.

It’s free, no ads, no tracking, and your credentials stay on your phone. It’s not open source, but feel free to ask me anything about how it works.

It’s in internal testing on the Play Store right now, and I’d love some feedback, especially from people with unusual setups (reverse proxies, NAS, Docker...). You can sign up at rainarr.app

Full disclosure: the app is mostly written by hand with some AI help, and the demo posters in the screenshots are AI-generated.

Rainarr provides no content: it controls servers you install and run yourself. It is not affiliated with Plex or any of the projects mentioned.

Ricked Card
— It’s time

—————————————————————————————————————————————————

EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback! I worded this badly, so to clarify: Rainarr is mainly a phone remote for the server owner, for the whole stack (Plex, Radarr, Sonarr, Tautulli, Maintainerr, your download client), a bit like nzb360, with a 2-tap setup. The guest side is an optional extra for family members who won’t use a web app, and it only goes through Seerr with the role you set. Your \arr keys never end up on their phone.*

I am using Sonarr and Clonarr to arrange things... is there an easy way to prefer 265 releases where available? I would much rather download 265 releases when a good one exists...

external app (ai coded) TRAWL: faster Cloudflare bypass for your *arr stack

I built TRAWL because FlareSolverr was slow and failed too often on the indexers I used. It's an open source, self-hosted scraping engine that works with Prowlarr and Jackett through a FlareSolverr-compatible API.

Here's how it performed on two protected indexers:

Site Tool First request Repeat request
1337x TRAWL 4.3s 141ms
1337x FlareSolverr 12.1s 11.2s
1337x Byparr 18.1s 20.7s
EZTV TRAWL 5.0s 651ms
EZTV FlareSolverr 11.2s 11.3s
EZTV Byparr 16.5s 16.8s

Results vary by site and IP. The full benchmark report is available in the repository.

There are built-in paths for supported CAPTCHA variants, plus a native API and MCP tools if you want to use it outside your *arr stack.

It runs in Docker. To try it, point your existing FlareSolverr integration at TRAWL and keep the matching indexer tags.

GitHub, documentation and setup

AI disclosure: I chose the "Built by AI" flair for transparency. I wrote TRAWL's original core without AI. Some recent changes and community PRs used AI assistance, but I review, edit and test what gets merged. The flair doesn't mean the whole project was generated by AI.
