Troll Posts Earn Bans ❤️

I've noticed an uptick in troll posts lately, and y'all I'm tired. I'm wielding the ban hammer with impunity!

Just keep reporting the people posting nonsense and I'll do my best to make it go away. And thank you all for being, for the most part, a lovely community.

No More Image Posts

Hey guys!

I've noticed a lot of (very young women) posting pictures of themselves and requesting name ideas lately.

Since this sub recently hit 7000 members and I'm the only even slightly active mod, I'm turning off image posts effective immediately. It looks an awful lot like spam, and even if it isn't you should not be posting your irl face on reddit for people to give you opinions.

I get folks will be mad, but I'm not going to do a bunch of unpaid labor to prevent assholes from insulting your appearance (and this is reddit, there are always assholes who want to insult your appearance). If you want to deal with that, please solicit it in another corner of the internet.

Thank you!

Edit: one of our users has volunteered to run the aptly-named subreddit r/namesbutbetter, if you want to do the pictures thing go there and good luck. You may also consider r/namenerds or r/reddit_gets_renamed.

Thoughts on the surname Moon?

Currently going through a divorce and heavily considering just picking a new last name after it is finalized. I don't plan to change my name again if I were to re-marry.

I took my (soon to be ex) husband's name when we got married, and I don't like it. It's a color (such as: brown, grey, black, etc) and makes my name 1 letter off a famous adult film star whom I also bear a small resemblance to. Coincidence, but still not something I am fond of.

My maiden name is a complicated German name that no one is ever able to pronounce, and I despise being associated with my dad. I have other family whom carry the surname so i have no reason to keep it. It will not die with me.

Thoughts on Moon?

Also open to suggestions for short surnames. 3 syllables or less. Uncommon without sounding made up is the goal. I also considered Sinclair for a moment but it didn't feel right.

Initials would end up being AGM.

What girl’s name sounds intelligent, feminine, and professional to you?

Question for both men and women: What girl’s name immediately makes you imagine an intelligent, elegant, confident, and successful woman?

I’m looking for something international, timeless, feminine but not overly delicate, and professional enough to suit a doctor, lawyer, CEO, or journalist.
For example, Nora sounds soft and feminine to me, but not too soft. It still feels mature and professional.

What names give you that impression?

Thnx! 🤍

changing my surname

hello, so i have a problem. I am going to propose to my girlfriend here in a few weeks. it is an ongoing joke between her and I about which last name we will be taking because I have different one I had perviously went by, my biological, my step-dads and my mom's. problem is I do not have a good relationship with any of them. I do not want to take any of their last names and make it mine legally (obviously not biological) so I'm in a stump, yesterday I asked her dad for his blessing/permission to marry his daughter and told him my dilemma. he agrees with me and says change it completely. I want a new start, i want to break the cycle and be my own man. this may not be a popular opinion but I know what it means to me. now with all that for context, what are some last names?

we both have agreed her last name is not something we want. i have asked and she was the first to say no lol. mainly ideas honestly, something meaningful and not to do with ethnicity.

Whats a name hot take you have?

(For those who dont know a hot take is an opinion not many will agree with.)

I feel like whoever had the child should get the ultimate say in what the baby is called. No im not saying the father cant also have baby name ideas, just the person giving birth should have the ultimate say.

My partner’s best friend just named his dog our baby name and told me I'm being dramatic?

Before anyone comments "nobody owns a name," please hear me out because I already feel ridiculous. My partner and I have been trying for a baby for almost a year. Ever since we started, we’ve had one boy name that we both completely adore: Arlo. It’s the only name we agreed on without debating, and our close friend group has known this for literally two years.

Well, my partner’s best friend adopted a golden retriever puppy last weekend. We went over to his place yesterday, and he excitedly introduced us to... Arlo. I stood in teh kitchen completely stunned. When I asked if he was joking, he just laughed and went: "Come on, names aren't copyrighted! Plus he looks like an Arlo. Your kid can share the name, it's not that deep."

My partner thinks I’m making drama out of nothing and told me "it’s fine, our son can just be Human Arlo and the dog will be Dog Arlo." i feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone. Am I being totally petty, or does having your kid share a name with a dog you see every weekend completely ruin it? Can we still use this name?

Help me find a name to match my daughter’s!

I have a daughter named Rosalie and am having another baby girl. I want to know some names that match the essence of Rosalie - timeless, elegant, smart, maybe a little vintage, and have the options for nicknames.

I absolutely love the name Violet, but don’t want to have a floral or nature theme. Florence, Cordelia, and Valentine are three others that are on my list!!

Ghislaine… a ruined name that was never pretty

i saw another post about this name looking like “gasoline“ and I agree completely. it baffles me how people say “I think Donald was always an ugly name even before Trump“ but now people are like “This is such a beautiful name, but it’s ruined”

How is Donald even a LITTLE worse than this...

Ghislaine.

how do you even pronounce it, anyway.

What’s your opinion on this initials

• Upvotes

Hello! Could you please tell me if the initials AJNL (L is the family name) sound okay? I’m asking because they would be the initials of my child’s name, and I want to make sure they don’t have any negative connotations. I know I’m probably overthinking it, but I just want to be sure.

Have you named your child something that people unfortunately associate with something that you've never heard of? Or they associate it with something negative from their own personal feelings/experiences?

Whenever I tell people my sons name is Rhys, I've had a number of people say "ACOTAR?" I had literally no fuckin idea what that was! But I assume there's a character called Rhys, and from the things they say, I assume he's not a very nice character? 🤣

I mean, it is what it is, but it does make me roll my eye's when people assume I've named him after a character from some fuckin book I'd never heard of. Lmao.

L names + M names for girls

My husband and I are on somewhat of a trend with matching first and middle name initial.
Ex. L first L middle; M first M middle and so on.

I have first names, just in need of middle names!

The middle name i have for M is too basic for me (may/mae) so I want to hear some pretty options!! I love type names that roll off the tongue!

Current L middle name I LOVE and have loved is “Lainey” but I want to see some other option’s

Not maya, Lylah, Layla, Emma, Evelyn, Elsie, Eloise, those are mostly names already in my family LOL.

Bonus for letter E!!! Elizabeth is on my list bc it’s classic and pretty so I want other options for the middle name.

Little Girl Due In A Few Days!! Completely Stumped On First+Middle Name Combos!

First names : Fiona, Katherine, Rhea, Victoria

Middle names : Colette, Olivia, or the other three first name options

Last name : Rhymes with Herald

Full List :

- Fiona Colette, Fiona Katherine, Fiona Olivia, Fiona Rhea, Fiona Victoria

- Katherine Colette, Katherine Fiona, Katherine Olivia, Katherine Rhea, Katherine Victoria

- Rhea Colette, Rhea Fiona, Rhea Katherine, Rhea Olivia, Rhea Victoria

- Victoria Colette*, Victoria Fiona, Victoria Katherine, Victoria Olivia, Victoria Rhea

(* "Victoria Colette" means "victory victory" so it's the only certain no-go)

If it's not too much of a hassle, I'd love to know which middle name you like the best out of each of the four first names, even if you aren't crazy about the first name, thank you so much!

Also note: We will be using the traditional pronunciation of Rhea which is RAY-uh. It's a very common way to pronounce it where I live, and it's a family name. We know some people will say it REE-uh too, but that's alright. Just when picking your favorite middle name for Rhea, please consider both pronunciations

Opinion on boy names!

Looking for feedback on my current boy name shortlist, as well as suggestions for other names that might fit our style! 😊
The siblings, in age order, are Felicity, Augustus, Gideon, Phoenix, and Elodie.
We try not to repeat first initials between our children (middle initials can repeat), and all of our children’s middle names are more familiar, established names.
Ideally, I like boy names that fall somewhere around the 300–600 range in US popularity. I prefer names that feel established, a little old-fashioned, and recognizable without being overly common or trendy. I also try to avoid names that are rapidly rising in popularity, although I made an exception for Elodie because I loved it too much to pass up, even knowing the Ellie-name trend was gaining momentum.
I love names that feel distinctive without sounding invented or like we’re trying too hard to be unique. My current favorites are a little more unusual than my other children’s names, so I’m looking for an outside perspective on whether they’re wearable as first names or might be a little too out there.
My top four contenders (the more unusual options):
Nazareth(is this too weird?)
Laszlo / Lazlo
Wilder
Calloway / Callahan
Calloway and Callahan are a little outside my usual naming style, but I’m considering them partly to honor a family member, Cali.
Some of the more familiar options I’m considering:
Jasper
Declan
Malachi
Sullivan
I’d love feedback or suggestions for names with a similar feel: established, sturdy, a little uncommon, and preferably with some history behind them. Ideally, I’d like to avoid anything too trendy or anything that feels like a made-up spelling.
We’re in the US, so US popularity and naming trends are what I’m interested in.
Thanks for reading! 😊

Are these initials bad

So I realised my 2 year old sons initials spell COW. It’s been bothering me lately, but not sure it’s worth the hassle of changing or adding another middle name. Are COW bad initials? Funny thing is we own cattle lol

How to deal with people not liking daughters name?

I'm from a Spanish speaking country and currently living in Spain. Me and husband decided to name our daughter (1month old) a traditional madrid name (which is not known back home). We really liked the name and the idea of honoring the city where she was born, so we went ahead and named her Almudena.

When we chose it, we received mixed reactions but we made it clear we were not open to suggestions and that the decision was final. Regardless... it hasn't been easy. MIL didn't hide that she disliked the name. Great uncles and great aunts can't remember the name.

I don't regret our decision but it's difficult not to feel hurt by people's reactions. Should I impose a nickname? At home we actually don't use her name but her nickname but I was hoping to keep it private, maybe that's a dumb idea and I should share it? As I can imagine people liking it more than the actual name.

Thinking about rearranging my name

My boyfriend and I aren't even engaged yet, so this is pretty preemptive, but it'd rather think on a decision for a while before I have to actually make it. (We've talked about engagement extensively, so I know it is coming in the somewhat near future).

So let's say my name is Jane Mary Doe, and my boyfriend's is John Smith (His last name actually is Smith, which is part of the reason I'm so set on keeping my birth last name as part of the equation)

I'm thinking I could start using my first and middle name as a two part first name, and make my maiden name my middle name.

So it would become
First: Jane Mary
Middle: Doe
Last: Smith

I've been using "Jane Mary" informally for a long time, and things like my Facebook and license have my full name opposed to just my middle initial. I also have been using "Mary" as my name for pickup orders and such because it's easier to pronounce and I get a lot less spelling errors (usually) than my first name. (First name isn't super unique, there's just a lot of individual possible variations).

One thing to note is even though me and him both have very short last names, my current first and middle combined is 13 letters.

I have thought about making my middle name "Mary Doe" but then I would become "Jane Smith" and that is way too common for me. I feel like I would be losing my identity at that point. Regardless of my slightly unique first name, I've checked and there are multiple other people with the same first/last name combination.

What are people's experiences with having a two part first name? Is there anything I would have to be aware of before making this change, legally? (I am in America) I appreciate all input and thoughts! This is still very much me testing the waters, but it's my favorite name change combination I've found so far!

What’s the most beautiful Arabic or Hebrew girl’s name you’ve ever heard that would also fit naturally in your country or culture?

I’m looking for something feminine, elegant, and international a name that wouldn’t feel too unusual where you live.

Help my partner and I choose a surname

I'm a lesbian about to marry the love of my life next year and neither one of us wants to keep our current last names. So we've decided to choose one together, but neither of us really knows where to start. I have significant religious trauma (and homophobic parents), so when I came across the name St. James, it felt delightfully irreverent. My fiancé isn't totally in love with it, however, and worries that the abbreviation will be a hassle on legal things. What are your thoughts on that? And if you have any suggestions, please send them my way. Something with sapphic or femmenist significance might be fun, so go crazy. She's a big Wonder Woman fan if that helps. My first name is Stephanie and hers is Michelle, which I'm including here because I think it's important for understanding how the surnames might flow.

ETA: We're also crazy outdoor adventurers if that stirs up any new ideas.
