Games Start Times
Hi all!
I’m travelling to NYC next year for my honeymoon! We both would love to see a Yankees game - we don’t have baseball in the UK really so my question is, if you don’t mind me asking, what are some things we must know?
Also - we’re looking to go July next year and on some websites it’s listed as starting at 1pm and others it’s TBD - do you know when about we’ll know what the start time is so we can plan our itinerary? We’re heading over end of June/start of July if that helps

Yankees have been to 8 World Series since 1996, in an alternate universe, how would the Yankees have done if they had faced the other NLCS opponent?
In an alternate Universe Yankees face:
1996 - vs. St. Louis Cardinals
1998 - vs. Atlanta Braves
1999 - vs. New York Mets
2000 - vs. St. Louis Cardinals
2001 - vs. Atlanta Braves
2003 - vs. Chicago Cubs
2009 - vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
2024 - vs. New York Mets

Nothing was better than hearing Enter Sandman with a one-run lead
Man, watching Mo come out of the bullpen was something else. Didn't matter who was up to bat, you just felt like the game was about to end.
I don't think I appreciated it enough at the time. You almost took it for granted that the 9th inning was handled.
Now I feel like I can't even relax with a three-run lead in the 8th.

Hideki Matsui in the 2009 World Series was something else
Matsui hitting .615 in the World Series and winning MVP is still crazy to think about. Dude looked like he couldn't get out.
That whole 2009 team was fun to watch, but Matsui absolutely went off when it mattered most. Six RBIs in Game 6 alone 😭
Still wish he could've stayed with the Yankees a little longer.
Anyone else remember watching that series live?

26 years ago today, the New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets in the 2000 Subway Series, securing a 3-peat. The Yankees won four World Series in five years from 1996 to 2000. No team has done that since the Yankees from 1949 to 1953.

Precursor Notes and mindsets to my offseason plans (dsmithnyciii) (long read)
An update (if interested-I know a lot won’t be)-I will probably have 5-6 full fledged offseason plans later this week. For comparison purposes. I just got back from vacation and it was/has been a busy day at work monday and today.
All of these plans will be somewhat realistic (no Soto re-acquistions etc) and all of them actually cut payroll anywhere from $5M-$35M AAV from this past year (we finished at $341M). I think Hal will reduce payroll for sure after that press conference. I also can’t see him doing anything too drastic. Since the next seasons (2027 offseason) and (2028 offseason) a ton of money is off the books (2027-$66M-Bellinger reduction, Garcia, McMahon, Schmidt, Stanton all gone) (2028-$67M-Rodon,Cole and Weathers money gone).
For anyone who thinks that a salary cap and floor will occur (I still think a new CBA gets done without it even with 10-50 missed games) understand that there is no way it would be implemented right away. It is a bit annoying that people don’t understand that. 2-3 years will be used for teams to be compliant.
For offensive positions of need of improvement (3B, 2B, CF, RH C, 1B-I have Garcia traded in most of my plans-in that order-3B, 2B, CF and RH C are musts and are in all of my plans) I like most of you are looking at 2026 vast improvements in OBP (at least 33%), SO% (no more than 22%) BB% (at least 7%) and defensive WAR (being no less than -7 FWAR). I don’t look at anyone else except for a few notable exceptions. Ideally all of these offensive changes are from the right side. A lot harder said than done.
Ones who match these metrics (not including players who are already on the team)-
3B: No Alex Bregman, Jose Ramirez, Junior Caminero, Kazuma Okamoto, Gunnar Henderson (move from SS), Maikel Garcia, Miguel Vargas, Ezequiel Duran, Caleb Durbin, Nolan Arenado, Max Muncy, Manny Machado, Kevin McGonigle listed (too good and/or obviously not on market) .

RH-Ty France (FA), Charles McAdoo (5 yrs of control-trade from TOR-EXCEPTION MADE-OBP, BB%)
For pitching upgrades (bullpen only) in all of my plans I bring back Bednar either at 1 yr/$23.15M (QO), 2 yrs/$40M ($20M AAV), 3 yrs/$55M ($18.1M AAV) or at 4 yr/$64M ($16M AAV). Those are my max years and salaries I go.
I have Blackburn back in half of my plans and in all of my plans I want to add high velocity relievers.
Listed in order are my 10 BP candidates based on feasibility of acquiring who have both a minimum 2026 FB velocity of 97 mph, a K/9 over 9.50, an FIP under 3.50, an ERA under 3.50 and a BB/9 under 4.00.

My Relief Preference Rankings (again Bednar is coming back in all scenarios-based on feasibility who match that criteria) :
-RH Michael Petersen (3 yrs of control trade from MIA)
-RH Juan Morillo (5 yrs of control-trade from ARI)
-LH Adrian Morejon (FA-LEAST LIKELY-TOO EXPENSIVE)
-RH Paul Blackburn (FA-EXCEPTION MADE-FB velocity, SO/9-MOST LIKELY)
-Jacob Latz (4 yrs of control-trade from TEX-EXCEPTION MADE-FB Velocity-Very unlikely)
-RH Seranthony Dominguez (1 yrs of control-trade from SEA-only in a “salary dump” trade-McMahon)
-LH JoJo Romero (FA-EXCEPTION MADE-SO/9, FIP, FB velocity)
-RH Trevor Megill (trade from MKE-2ND LEAST LIKELY-NOT TRADED BY BREWERS)
-RH Bryan Abreu (FA-EXCEPTION MADE-FB velocity, FIP, ERA-I love his playoff experience)
-LH Gregory Soto (FA-EXCEPTION MADE-ERA)
Except for one plan I plan on having one of Weathers or Warren always stay as the 5th starter. 1 plan has me keeping both. More to come later this week.
Finally here is a group ranking of trade/FA pieces of ours:
MLB players brought back in all of my plans (FA) (2): Bednar and Yarborough

My Yankees offseason plan for 2027 if i was GM
Here is how i'd handle the offseason if I was the Yankees GM
*Resignings:*
- CL: David Bednar 3yrs $48M
I know the price might be high considering what the team has usually spent, it also could be low because of the QO at 23 mil. I think paying him is priority #1
- RP: Paul Blackburn 2yrs $10M (club option for year 2 & incentives for performance)
Blackburn was great out of the pen bridging the gap to David Bednar. His metrics showed didnt back up his sub 2 era but he outperformed the metrics and was really good with enducing ground balls to get out of jams, bringing him back
*Trades:*
Cardinals receive:
- 3B Ryan McMahon
Yankees receive:
- Cash Considerations or player to be named later
We also eat $12 mil of his salary.
We need him off the team, he isn't a good hitter and his defense regressed
Trade Heliot ramos for prospects
I don't know what team we can trade him to maybe the white sox or another outfield needy team. His defense is awful and hitting isn't on par. We wont get what we traded for him but maybe a catching prospect or something.
3.
Rangers receive:
- LHP: Ryan Weathers
Yankees receive:
- 3B Josh Jung
Jung is my #1 pick for a third baseman, the rangers have duran who can play third or maybe move walcott there. He does have some injury history and his defense took a step back, but i think he can revitalize it. He is also a right handed contact bat who doesnt strike out a ton and his metrics support his .299 BA. He can be a middle of the order bat.
Marlins receive:
- INF Anthony Volpe
- RHP Luis Serna
Yankees receive:
- Xavier Edwards
Edwards is what we need, a contact and speedy leadoff hitter who can get on base, walks close to what he strikes out and is a switch hitter. He'll also be cheaper than Otto Lopez.
Padres Receive:
- OF Jasson Dominguez
Yankees Receive:
- RHP Jeremiah Estrada
He does have some control issues and had a couple IL stints but he does strikeout a lot of his opponents and has a lot of swing and miss which is what we need especially in october he is also controllable. He is also a pain for lefty bats to face with an expected .066 BA against. He can be another high leverage/middle relief option.
*Signings:*
- Evan Phillips, RHP: 1 yr $7M with performance incentives
A little bit of a pricier Matt Blake reclaimation project. Evans features a three fastball mix (cutter, sinker, 4 seam) as well as a sweeper which is what Matt Blake loves. Evans has been pretty good throughout his career at limiting walks and having a higher strikeout rate. He is coming off an injury which could make him cheaper. He also has some closing and high leverage experience. And a career 0.00 era in the post season.
- Carson Kelly, C: 2Yrs $12M
I think this probably my favorite move. Wells is great defensively, Kelly is also really good defensively. He was a former top 100 prospect and a decent contact bat. He is a great platoon bat with Wells that mashes lefties (.298 BA vs Lefties) another great thing about Kelly is he is one of the best Catchers at ABS and could maybe help Wells with that. I'd rather make this signing than trade for guys like Langeliers or Goodman (I really like both of those guys but they strikeout a lot and arent the best defensively.) Kelly doesn't strike out a ton and knows when to take a walk. This is my dream right handed bat.
- Tyrone Taylor, OF: 1 Yr $3.5M
Former Gold glover who has decent speed and bullies lefty pitchers. He did very well in chicago after getting traded there. He can give Judge or Jones a day off by manning the outfield.
I also thought about Jacob Young but i dont know what we'd trade to get him.
- JoJo Romero, LHP: 3 Yrs, $20M
I like JoJo a lot, he brings a lot of energy and gets lots of ground balls, he can be our lefty specialist to alleviate Headrick's workload. This brings in another lefty with a sweeper for Matt Blake to have fun with. I liked Romero even before his lights out playoff performance. I wanted the Yankees to trade for him back in the 2025-26 offseason.
Projected Lineup:
C - Wells/Kelly
1B - Luis Garcia Jr
2B - Xavier Edwards
SS - George Lombard Jr
3B - Josh Jung
LF - Cody Bellinger
CF - Spencer Jones
RF - Aaron Judge
DH - Ben Rice
Bench:
OF - Tyrone Taylor
Util - Jose Caballero
C - Wells/Kelly
DH - Giancarlo Stanton
Rotation:
SP 1 - Cam Schlittler
SP 2 - Max Fried
SP 3 - Gerrit Cole
SP 4 - Carlos Rodón
SP 5 - Will Warren
Bullpen:
Bulk reliever: Yerry De Los Santos
MR: Clarke Schmidt
MR: JoJo Romero
MR: Jeremiah Estrada
MR: Evan Phillips
SU: Paul Blackburn
SU: Brent Headrick
CL: David Bednar
Please let me know your thoughts or any questions you guys have.

Jeffrey Maier: Was It Retribution?
I assume we all know who he is, but for the Baby Bomber Fans, he’s the kid who reached over the fence and grabbed Jeter’s fly ball in the 1996 ALCS, which the umpires then called a home run (think if this season’s Volpe call had gone the other way). I just watched a minidoc on the event, and a strong through-line was drawn between Alomar spitting in that ump’s face and the outcome of the call. I was 9 at the time and had no clue what a scumbag Alomar was, and all these years later it was still news to me. So for the older heads who were a bit more conscious at the time: was the perception that the umps ruled against the Orioles as retribution for Alomar?

[Kirschner]: Ten steps the Yankees should take to reach the World Series in 2027
The free-agent market is weak overall this offseason, but second base may have the most talent. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is arguably the best available second baseman, but the Yankees should let him explore free agency.
Chisholm has immense talent — just a year ago, he joined Bobby Bonds and Alfonso Soriano as the only Yankees in franchise history to hit at least 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in a season. But some relationships are meant to last only a few years, and this should be one of them. The club should focus on finding the right long-term match.
The Yankees need players they can trust to make the right plays. Chisholm has shown on the biggest stages that his lapses in focus can hurt the team. Boone benched Chisholm in Game 3 of the ALDS, even though the Yankees were facing elimination. That spoke volumes about how much the manager trusted Chisholm.
Overall, Chisholm excelled as a Yankee. Some of his numbers were elite, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him keep thriving, but giving him a long-term deal is risky.

Should the PED users be allowed in the HOF?
Seeing Arod a lot lately refuels my interest in this topic.
The MLB steroid era is typically said to be the late
1980’s till the late 2000’s.
If you talk to anyone who was a gym rat in the 1980’s, I bet they would all tell you they knew people using steroids. Steroid use in the NFL started in the 1970’s. If an MLB player was into weightlifting, it would have been a tough temptation not to use them. It’s likely steroid use in the MLB started much earlier than the late 1980’s.
ESPN has a great series of articles called “who knew?”. One of my favorites is the article by Tom Farrey “The Memos: a ban ignored”. Here’s an excerpt:
“In the spring of 2002, the Milwaukee Brewers' manager shared his thoughts on players' taking steroids. "To be honest," Jerry Royster told the Los Angeles Times, "until they make it a rule, I don't care what anybody does."
It was a common defense at the time: If it's not against the rules, then what's the problem? Even today, many players believe that steroids were not banned in the majors until August of 2002, when the league's first drug-testing agreement kicked in. Before then, says former pitcher Bryce Florie, steroid use "may have been against national law, but it wasn't against baseball rules." It's a notion that has been stated as fact in national media as reputable as USA Today, The Associated Press and ESPN The Magazine.
In truth, steroids have been banned in baseball since 1991 -- in a policy baseball officials made little effort to publicize. A source provided a copy of the seven-page document to ESPN The Magazine on the condition of anonymity. Titled "Baseball's Drug Policy and Prevention Program," the memo was sent to all major-league clubs on June 7 of that year by then-commissioner Fay Vincent. He spelled out components of the program, and ordered, "This prohibition applies to all illegal drugs and controlled substances, including steroids."
In conclusion, PED use was widespread in the MLB and the organization put little effort to eliminate it
until 2002. Nothing was done to the official records to try and eliminate PED aided statistics.
Should the HOF selection committees consider steroid use? Should it make a difference if the player used PEDs after testing was enforced?

Brian Cashman’s 2026 Report Card
If I owned the Yankees, I would ask Brian Cashman to explain this to me (AI generated):
Financial & Performance Metric
New York Yankees Milwaukee Brewers Tampa Bay Rays
Total Adjusted Payroll $308,336,780 $146,206,320 $95,615,469
Regular Season Wins 93 wins 103 wins 98 wins
Payroll Cost Per Win $3,315,449 $1,419,478 $975,668
MLB Financial
Efficiency Rank 25th 6th 1st
And I guess he would say, “Our players did not play up to their potential. We had a World Series Championship team out of Spring Training.” And I would say, “It seems to me that either you are wrong, or I should fire Aaron Boone, because this is a failure in my eyes and it’s not the first time with the two of you in charge. In fact, since you continue to advocate for Aaron Boone, I should fire both of you, no? Explain to me why not, and make sure your explanation includes some acceptance of responibility for results, because I don’t retain managers who don’t accept responsibility for results. And if you find yourself about to utter the phrase ‘quality at-bats’ please stop, go to the parking lot, and never come back.
