Discussion Middle Earth SBG Questions Thread

Keep 'em coming

Edit: Stealth Mod announcement (I don't want to unpin the two pinned posts)

First, I have updated the rules to include something obvious to most longtime wargamers on reddit - posts asking or offering access to the rules is not allowed. Please do not ask for PDF's.

Second, no hate on 3D printing, but also do not come to this subreddit asking for STL proxies, or offering that. This may be too cautious of us, but I notice the reddit spam filter seems to remove any mention of STL's outright. So I figure I might as well make it a rule.

Finally, I have eased up the Spam filter from High to Low. Hopefully the redbubble spammers are still caught by this, without catching stray blogspot content creators. I've noticed the reddit algorithm taking down much more bycatch than usual, so we can experiment with a lower setting for now.

And as always, if you ever notice something astray with your own posts or someone elses, do not hesitate to message the mods.

Thanks everyone, -Tezerel

Been dreaming of adding some dwarf warriors to my collection for 20 years. Finally got these guys painted up and decided they needed some dwarven halls to defend. Experimented texturing some EVA tiles, and overall I'm pretty pleased with the effect. Joint lines between tiles still a bit more pronounced than I'd like. But the stone texture turned out great and makes a really good playing surface.

This is a conversion for a home-made scenario we played. We used the Palace Guard Captain profile for her.

I used parts from a Palace Guard miniature, and an actual face from a Legolas mini to guarantee a family ressemblance !

I had fun with it, making up the costume, and using some wild colours and basing. Note the white gems of Lasgalen details. A Lothlorien shield was used, I didn't have one from Mirkwood and I was in a rush, but that provides some storytelling (more exchanges with Lorien before the Necromancer ? Is she a Galadhrim maybe ?).

Question Starting help Harad

Hey guys so I finally figured after like 16 years I’ll try MESBG again. Good buddy of mine did so too with the osgiliath box plus Mordor and Gondor starter armies respectively. I looked at a few armies and while I like the idea of quite a few more hero themed list for the start I figured it’s best to get a proper army. I chose Harad.

While I read up on quite a bit of blogs etc there are questions I still can’t really answer for myself, so I figured if anyone has some pointers that would be immensely helpful and appreciated :)

I’ll definitely start with a box of Harad warriors first, maybe add a box of riders. Eventually I’ll want a mumak because they are awesome but I’ll wait until I’ll have played a bit. I also dabbled with the list builder for a bit.
This is where my certainty ends though, here come a bunch of questions:

I want to play mostly pure Harad so my options are serpent horde or harad, right? Most stuff I read points towards serpent horde given it buffs the limited roster more, the Harad list almost seems unnecessary if I’ll restrict myself to Harad units anyway? (Despite buffing mumaks more)

So if I want a beginner friendly yet worthwhile experience, should I aim for 300-400 points?
How about the Harad command box? I get there’s a taskmaster, banner and sort of leader in there, also a guy blowing a horn. Does he have rules too? And how useful are they?
Since suladan seems to have a banner and something like a taskmaster or leader can be kitbashed or bought separately I figured the command box is quite overpriced given what I’ll actually get, right?

I’m mostly leaning towards the serpent horde but since I need to play (and thus buy) suladan there I figured maybe for the start it would be okay to just play a Harad list with warriors and riders accompanied by generic leaders….
Is that kind of list even worthwhile or will I just get crushed against a similar sized Gondor or Mordor army that brings a bit more variety than just that?

I guess what would help me the most is some advice is some beginner lists that make sense but also start slow on the amount of models bought. I don’t mind splurging a bit and starting with suladan too, I just want to make sure I’m going about it the right way so I can test the waters and have fun doing so.

Thanks a ton in advance!

I recently had the opportunity to paint this model for a commission. It was an absolute pain to assemble but such a joy to paint, these new sculpts are an absolute dream for painting compared to the older ones (I still love the old ones but for different reasons).

I think I'm going to have to paint a dol amroth army for myself after this.

How do you deal with the difficulty of finding a Girion miniature?

Hello everyone!

I've recently been playing Army of Thrór, and I've noticed that it lacks effective ranged options. Because of this, I've become interested in the Erebor & Dale army.

From what I've seen, Erebor & Dale looks like a really appealing army, especially since Dale's ranged units can make up for the lack of ranged firepower in Army of Thrór. (It's a shame that I can't use the Windlance, but I think that's a reasonable trade-off.)

However, the main problem is that the Girion miniature has been discontinued, and the prices on eBay and other second-hand marketplaces are ridiculously high.

So I'd like to ask: How have you guys dealt with this issue?

I'd love to hear how others have handled it!

Question Secret Mission cards

Hey,

I'm going to a tournament soon which is using the secret missions from the matched play guide.

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a printable version so I can make up actual cards? I cant find anything for the life of me.

If not i guess I'll just have to make my own.

thanks

Army List Rivendell 700pt options?

Thumbnail

I want to run a 700pt Rivendell list at an upcoming local tournament and I'm trying to decide which to run. I want to run Elrond and Lindir behind a battleline pumping out WoB, but I'm considering the rest of the list: either Glorfindel to provide a big hitting hero to target high value targets, whilst providing some mobility and anti-monster; or a Captain with more troops to provide numbers and broader mobility (through Heroic March).

I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

Hi everyone, i am painting miniatures for a long times but never try those dirty and filthy mordor orcs.

I wanted to know your opinions about mine, I only want them to be push to table top ready ++ level, so they can look good in groups, and one the table.

I really like my metallic work, maybe I could improve it ? More rust ? Weathering powder in the recesses ?

What i think is weak is the skin. I only use contrast paint (militarum green and gore-grunta fur for the brownish skin tone). With only one edge highlight, maybe I should paint it the conventional way ...?

My base modell are primed in grey with a light ocre drybrush.

Had this model as a kid and recently found it in a state of some disrepair. Thought I'd get it ready and try and get Road to Helm's Deep on the table in 2027 (the painting speed has slowed right down since baby arrived in August...)
