NUCLEAR hot take Age gap relationship discourse is mostly people not knowing how to mind their own business

A lot of the time, anyway. Obviously when a 60 year old is dating an 18 year old, there is some wacky shit going on. But people losing their minds over a 30 year old dating a person in their early 20s? Or any relationship that falls slightly out of that half your age plus seven rule? What a non issue. Some people are way too confident at wielding power imbalance theory to be nosy, judgmental pricks. Someone else's romantic relationship is none of your business.

serious hot take If you never want to hear about your friends’ babies, people should not care about many topics from your life as well

Some people do not want to hear about their friends’ babies once they become parents and while I agree that EXCESSIVE talking about any topic (including babies) is mehhh, it’s flabbergasting that babies seem to be the only topic excluded from conversation. If you don’t want to hear about your friends’ children, why do you expect them to care about anything in your life that they can’t relate to? Like a stressful job, relationship drama, hobby, or even unfortunate illness or mental health? If you only view friendship as casual, that’s fair, but if you value friendships for better and for worse than babies should not be taboo for childfree people.
(I know not all people are like that, just basing my observation on some sentiments expressed both on reddit and by childfree people in other communities).

There’s too many subjects that have become so politicized that no real researchers want to touch them. At the detriment of society.

The best and brightest in their respective fields will absolutely not research all the things that need researched. It’s too politicized. So we have no real research. Research now seems to be funded by those with an agenda to “prove” something. This is nothing new. Tobacco and big oil perfected it over the last 75 years. But if we as a society want real facts, and real research, we have to support and protect real scientists doing real research. It’s the only way to advance.

casual hot take Not voting isn't the problem, you don't like people who vote differently

I see a bunch of people talk about how not voting is a red flag and deal-breaker and then go on to talk about the issues that are affecting them personally. The explanation doesn't match the point. The explanation reveals that your actual deal-breaker is anybody who doesn't vote for who you did and that includes people who don't vote

When the truth makes somebody look ugly they choose hide it in lies and misdirection

serious hot take If you're not ready for all the money in one pot, you're not ready for marriage

Basically title, putting all the money in one pot shows a level of trust and companionship that is needed for a successful marriage. If you can't get there, it means there are still trust issues.

(Yours/mine discretionary cash buckets are logistics, as long as most assets are common this is fine)

Possible exceptions for second marriages/kids outside of this marriage etc

Edit: I don't mind a prenup to have insurance for pre marital assets but if you're thinking about marital assets in that way pre-marriage you're ngmi

casual hot take The “your voting record is public” commercials and ads are nothing more than a thinly veiled threat

Pretty much title. There is zero point to those ads or commercials outside of “people can see if you vote or not”. And why does that matter? In a normal person’s brain, it doesn’t matter. But it seems as though they think it’s a good slogan?

Pretty casual take, but it’s still wild to see basically threats to vote online and on tv.

gender Women are more misled by porn than men are.

There’s a massive double standard when it comes to how pornography influences people’s expectations of the opposite sex. Women are quick to point out how porn has conditioned men to have unrealistic expectations of women’s bodies, but I rarely see the same level of acknowledgment when it comes to women’s expectations of male anatomy. In fact, I think the opposite is often overlooked. The casual jokes about penis size, the social media posts, and the way it’s brought up in conversation often reveal just how skewed some women’s perceptions of what’s normal actually are.

What bothers me is the confidence with which some people make these assumptions while simultaneously accusing men of being the ones conditioned by pornography. You cannot spend years criticizing men for developing unrealistic expectations from porn while refusing to acknowledge that women consume the same media and can develop equally distorted perceptions.

don’t take this as me being personally offended, i just had this thought

casual hot take Men not wanting to be a friends with a women for after a rejection is perfectly fine almost all the time

Im not talking about just straight up ignoring someone you see on a day to day basis thats shady but if you ask someone out and get turned down i really don't think its that odd to lessen/end the friendship especially if the friendship wasn't that long. Women find most men physically unattractive(atleast initially) so its definitely common for men to encounter if their friends with women. If you can handle suppressing your crush its probably the best for your psyche but i can empathize with people who don't really want to.

serious hot take Reddit is garbage. They censor topics and ignore the toxic comments flooding the site.

There really is no first amendment left. Yes, you can say things in private, but you‘ll never get the masses to hear you without a lot of money and some leverage over a broken system.

gender Women flashing male singers or throwing their bras and underwear at them on stage is disguising behavior and they should be kicked out.

Like if a man threw their underwear or exposed themself to a female artists, people would be outraged and make comments about men being creepy/disgusting and try to dox/cancel them.

So why is it acceptable or empowering when women do it to men? Being a male performer doesn’t mean you automatically consent to being sexualized or having your boundaries crossed.

casual hot take not everybody should be an entrepreneur, and a 9-5 isn't "settling"

motivational videos telling everyone to quit their jobs and "turn your passion into a business." Most people shouldn't.

The second you monetize a hobby, it stops being a hobby. Now it's deadlines, demanding customers, and complaints.

I watched a friend go through this. She loved baking and she was really good at it, so everyone told her to start selling. She did, and business was booming. She still shut it down because it made her miserable, and now she doesn't even enjoy baking anymore. She lost the thing she loved.

If your job covers your bills and lets you keep your passions for yourself, you're doing fine. Not everything has to be a side hustle.

Hot take: I'm tired of feeling like I have to hide certain opinions, and I'd love to find people who genuinely share them.

• Upvotes

Over the years I've found myself keeping a lot of my political opinions to myself because I know they'll be unpopular in many social and professional circles. I'm right-leaning, support Reform UK, agree with a tougher approach to immigration, would like to see welfare spending reduced, and generally hold views that are often criticised as being harsh or uncaring.

The frustrating part isn't people disagreeing with me. It's feeling like there are certain opinions you're expected to keep quiet about because expressing them can lead others to make assumptions about your character.

As a result, I often find myself self-censoring. I'll avoid certain topics, keep my views vague, or stay quiet altogether because I know where the conversation is likely to go.

Yet Reform UK attracts millions of votes, so clearly these views aren't as rare as some people make them seem. There must be plenty of people around who broadly agree with them.

Does anyone else feel isolated politically despite knowing there are many people who probably share their views? How have you found like-minded friends, social groups, or communities in real life?

They are unable to be uncomfortable, sacrifice, or be selfless. People are doing less favors for others. Showing up for people less. Most cannot handle parenthood or homeownership. Forget their inability to afford either- besides the point. But they’re the ones complaining about how they wish life was how it was when they were younger. Reels about how life was simpler, better.

Everyone today prioritizing themselves, socializing less, addicted to their phones. Care more about an influencers life than their actual friends.

The beauty of life is gone.

casual hot take Men cant hold other men accountable

• Upvotes

Put the pitch forks down. Generally speaking men tend to travel in packs of like minded men. Its why many of us are baffled, confused or grossed out when we hear things like a group of guys creating a group chat to share their girlfriends nudes.

There's generally very little over lap in archetypes of men in terms of core values at least within our close circles. This is because generally if we find behavior grating then we don't want to be around it, least of all from other men.

Accountability is something that tends to require sustained effort. It's not often that you hear something once then change immediately. It helps to be within an environment that is conducive to sustained change. Almost like getting in shape. But as I mentioned men do not like to be around or associate with behavior they find unappealing.

As you know what's appealing or unappealing differs from person to person and group to group. In a perfect world, every man would be on the same wavelength and messaging to create a sustained environment of accountability everywhere. But this is not a perfect world. Look at your neighborhood as an example. There are very good areas and there are pockets where you would advise people you care about to avoid. Yet there are people who still seek out those bad pockets for the next reason.

Another reason group accountability is difficult is that there are many men who are actively rewarded for their bad behavior. You've probably heard the recent adage that an abusive man has no problem finding someone to abuse. Now its not an abused person's fault for being abused. But if theyre an adult they do bear some responsibility to themselves to leave yet they often dont for various reasons.

What makes that even more interesting is that man becomes a representative point connecting multiple people who have targeted grievances about men because of his specific actions. So these men create ecosystems of people who bear the brunt of their behavior and that gets caste on the entire group. Which is sinister because that casting provides him unintended cover. If its everyone then he's a needle in a haystack. There's no reason to address why specifically he is able to consistently find people eager to be around him.

In many circles his behavior is seen as something that must be tamed or is even okay so long as his approval is received. Other men can advise him to change or exclude him but what incentive does he have to change if is consistently rewarded for his behavior? Why would being excluded from a group expressing behavior that doesnt appeal to him matter when he can find groups that do and they dont overlap?

He has no incentive to listen to other men. Chris Brown and John Lennon are perfect examples of this. Men with a documented history of abusive behavior whose most ardent supporters are the very people they are most likely to harm. They're rewarded, so they dont change. Chris Brown could be talked to and even beaten but find someone more then willing to lick their wounds. Reward is a greater motivating factor than pain.

If someone handed you 1000 dollars every time you littered or even encouraged you to litter so they could give you 1000 dollars, I guarantee your backyard would look like the great pacific garbage patch.

Now of course this doesnt mean that men shouldn't try. If anything I'd argue that men do but within their consistent circles. If those circles rarely physically overlap with the bad circles then there's not much that can be done. And there's only so much you can do in the chaos online.

So yeah. Men will change when bad men stop being rewarded for their behavior.

serious hot take wanting to have sex with teenagers as a full grown adult is weird.

Thats it. Thats should be the end of the discussion.

Wanting to have sex with someone because they are a teenager, whether thats an actual 18 year old or someone dressing up as a school girl/girl scout/etc, you are still a weirdo for seeking out the fantasy of a teenager, and frankly if it was legal I wouldnt be surprised if half of the people who seek out this content would go even lower than 18.

its one thing to enjoy sexual power play, its another to fantasize about victimizing someone.

Dating is easy if you dont care about dating conventionally attractive people

That's why so much dating advice on Reddit falls on deaf ears. If you're reasonably health-ish, haven't had your expectations completely warped by social media, have a decent personality, and are willing to look past superficial things, dating really isn't as difficult as people make it out to be.

Most men and women are hypergamous to some extent, and social media has only made that worse by giving people unrealistic expectations of what they should be able to attract.

The whole 6-6-6 thing is a perfect example. A lot of these guys know they could realistically get into a relationship with an ordinary woman who has an average job and isn't in perfect shape, but that's not who they want. They want THE girl.

A lot of it is just LARPing, and I'm guilty of it too. At the end of the day, who doesn't want to date someone attractive? But the simplest way to improve your chances of attracting someone attractive is to become more attractive yourself.

If you cant become more attractive and you've reached your ceiling then its kinda just tough luck, right.

Either you need to adjust your standards and date within your range or stay single

Here's the kicker, thats very difficult to do. Theres a reason psychologist dont claim to heal people.

casual hot take There is always a minority group which is acceptable to discriminate against

• Upvotes

American society has always had mainstream discrimination against minorities. Back in the old days black people were enslaved, a particularly extreme form of discrimination, justified by some strange interpretation of the Bible that they were cursed descendants of Noah's son Ham. After that they were segregated, then after the Civil Rights movement, equal rights were achieved, but plenty of racist talk still went on.

Thanks to the joint effort of many political activists, it is now less acceptable to invoke vitriol against black people. Since the vitriol still needs to go.... somewhere, it then went against the Hispanics - with the more straight up racist people calling them dirty, and the people who wish to disguise their racism citing the taking of American jobs as a valid reason to discriminate against them, instead of blaming the businesses who employ them illegally.

You also had the casual racism against East Asians - men were not masculine and had small dicks, women were fetishized. But that was okay since they are a model minority. Then when Covid hit, there was "stop Asian hate", but once people realized that the no.1 haters against Asians were black people, the movement quickly ground to a halt.

Now we need a new target to hate, so the new acceptable ones are Indians (dot not feather), people cite that they are dirty, impolite and to cover for the discrimination, the men are misogynistic. This may be true, but the women get lumped in the racist damage anyway, which makes me think it's more of an excuse to be racist in a progressive way.

I think the sociological root cause is that it's just great to have a minority that people can feel superior too, and eat their morally correct cake at the same time.

Note: to Europeans reading this, you guys are pretty much the same with Muslims and gypsies. To my fellow East Asians in Asia, come on we all know that we practice competitive racism to anyone with darker skin than us.

Everyone sucks and I think this is an innate human moral failing.

The Standard Model doesn't get enough attention for how badass it's name is

• Upvotes

Its literally The Standard Model. Not the standard model for any specific idea or thing of some sort, but The Standard Model. Literal everything we can observe in the known universe can be traced down to this description of the smallest particles and fields that actually exist. The Standard Model is literally the standard for how everything does everything's (except dark stuff). We don't give scientists the credit for how subtly badass that title is.

casual hot take Sympathy for Mass Shooters/Serial Killers is not Valid at all

I am constantly seeing things surrounding many cases of school shooters/mass shooters that sympathize with them, more so than with the actual victims of the violence and in reality the perpetrators should be degraded and shamed to oblivion.

"He had a rough childhood"

"He was bullied" etc.

An important thing to remember in the most infamous mass shooting case, Columbine, is that Dylan and Eric were the bullies themselves and would consistently harras students, break into people's property and threaten death on other people. They were not "picked on by society" they both had a massive persecution complex and were generally well liked before their descent. (If you wanna blame anyone besides them, blame the parents and school admins.)

The worst thing the two faced were parents that didn't seem to be in their lives all that much but even then I cannot sympathize as many of us have had neglectful parents (me included) and while we might have turned out weird, we never went and hurt others violently. I can sympathize with a mean streak and slight misanthropy as a stage in getting over childhood trauma, but I cannot for mass violence onto others.

I know there are many more cases but my attitudes towards all of them are the same.

To sum this up, if your solution to spiraling mental health and isolation is mass violence onto others, I cannot sympathize with you whatsoever. Please make a mockery of these people when you can, whilst respecting the victims.

gender Women who tell men struggling with dating to “just be confident” often don’t acknowledge how much less important confidence is to their own dating success.

I frequently see women tell men who struggle with dating to “just be confident,” and I think there’s a lack of perspective here.

Confidence is attractive in both men and women, but I think it’s substantially more important for men to have. Men are generally expected to initiate romantic interactions, make the first move, flirt, escalate, and risk rejection. All of these things require a certain degree of confidence and assertiveness.

Women, on the other hand, can often afford to be shy, passive, or socially awkward without those traits being nearly as detrimental to their dating prospects. A shy woman can still attract men who approach her. A shy man who never approaches women might never get anywhere.

I’m not saying women don’t struggle with dating, or that confidence isn’t attractive in women. I’m saying the consequences of lacking confidence are very different depending on your gender.

And I think that’s something worth acknowledging before telling a man who’s struggling with dating to “just be confident,” as though it’s some simple adjustment he can make.

serious hot take Reddit advice is way too quick to cutoff relationships

We've all seen the advice posts:

"My [relationship] did [somesuckthing], what should I do" or "I feel [somefeeling] for my [relationship]

Inevitably a large portion of the advice will be leave them/cut them off/ they're toxic.

And this goes for a lot of types of relationships, from familial to romantic.

And honestly, people need to apply more caution. They don't know 99% of the context. Maybe the person is in a bad headspace when posting. Maybe there was context. Maybe people are imperfect.

But more than that I think the advice is undervaluing the intrinsic value of relationships. And the value of working through things. And the inherent imperfection of people. Like there are posts with a single text conversation and then people dog pile and say the person is clearly horrible. In a shocking twist people say and do things on text which really are momentary lapses. Emotional people do stupid things.

Is the advice always wrong? Most certainly not. But it's not about those times. It's about the sheer lack of restraint people have with telling someone something like

"Cut your mom out of your life." Or "end this 10 year marriage"

Unless there is obvious abuse, that's not the advice you should be giving a stranger on the internet. Even if they are asking for that advice it needs to be restrained to the limits of your knowledge.

If you took seriously all of the advice on this sites about the expectations for people, you will live a very lonely very unfulfilled life. And I fear there are a lot of people who are in serious danger of that outcome.

serious hot take I have no problem with eating dogs

While i do dislike the illegal dog meat trade as it abuses the dogs

If someone were to raise a dog then eat it, i dont see why not, chickens, cows, rabbits, pigs are eaten even horses and i dont see any porblem with it, aslong as the animal aint abused you should be able to eat it (unless its poisonous or you know someone elses)

I know its an rare tale but seriously there just animals
