Sunset Lake Road at Lockley Accident
There was another wreck at the entrance of Lockley Road at Sunset Lake Road last night. This is now the tenth recorded since they widened Sunset Lake Road with the 540 extension last year. The previous traffic study conducted in 2023/2024 found zero accidents at that intersection. So an infinite increase when you divide by zero.
We set up cameras a few weeks ago and finally get one on tape (unfortunately this sub doesn't allow video!).
As crazy as it sounds, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is starting on a (twice delayed) project to widen Sunset Lake Road from Lockley Road to Holly Springs Road as we speak. This multi-million dollar widening will take a year or so and they are just starting to put the cones out this week to begin in earnest (be prepared for the delays on Sunset Lake Road as November sets in).
Despite everybody begging NCDOT to include a light in the project, they didn't find the merit. They just moved some power lines out of the way and they are striping Lockley with a crosswalk. Not even a turning lane for residents (https://ncdot.publicinput.com/A0587 to learn more).
The prospect of waiting for a bond to pass in 2028 (which seems rather unlikely tbh) to get any relieve here, all the while we continue to see crazy approvals for more pressure on that part of town, is untenable.
Last year, the Mayor of Apex Jacques Gilbert, Mayor of Apex, NC was able to undercut NCDOT and worked hard for his constituents to find funding for a major safety issue: https://www.instagram.com/p/DKu48iARHCF Surely somebody on this side of the highway can step up before 2030, the most likely earliest anybody will be spending any bond money were one to pass.
