Resources for botanizing during the spring bloom?

Hi all, I'm a soil scientist and amateur botanizer and I'm super excited to be taking my first specific botanizing trip to GSMNP next year in mid-April. Sadly I will miss the spring wildflower pilgrimage. I'm looking for any recommendations for a good field guide book, and/or any useful online forums for learning more about the local flora. Thanks in advance for any recs!

Why was the Cataloochee entrance road never finished?

I recently traveled to Cataloochee Valley and as a landscape historian I couldn’t help but notice that the entrance road seemed unfinished. The paved road inside the valley looks like any usual park road except it doesn’t start at the park boundary and does not directly connect to an outside road. Small, windy gravel roads lead visitors outside the park. The beginning of the entrance road has two gravel roads attaching to it at sharp 90 degrees angles. While there i observed that it looks like the road was intended to continue on, but was never completed. During my research i found that the road in fact was intended to connect to an outside road to make an easier way to get in. Acccording to “§403h–12. Entrance road to Cataloochee section” (1963) the road was intended to connect to White Oak Rd. just outside the park boundary. According to this LiDar Images of the area the road grade was completed up to the park boundary, but was never connected outside. My question is, since the grading was finished inside the park boundary, why was the improved access road never finished? Does anyone have any insights on this?

Has anybody driven Rich mountain road to the Rich mountain trailhead, then done it in and back? Curious if there's any parking on Rich mountain road for it. I've been through the road before but it's been 12-13 years.

Smokies trip late November

So we had planned on going to the smokies the beginning of November. Now we’re thinking the weekend before Thanksgiving. What are the best places to try to go to? I know they have switched a lot of things to Christmas theme by then. We will have a small toddler with us.

Also is it still in between weather by then usually or will it actually be cold enough for sweatshirts and coats?

Smoky Mountains NP (OCT 24 - OCT 27)

I have been having some trouble planning around these few days because of the crowd, any suggestions would be helpful.

We’ll be driving from Knoxville on October 24 and staying in Pigeon Forge until the evening of October 27. I’ve been having trouble planning our itinerary around the crowds, so I’d really appreciate any suggestions!

Below is our tentative plan—please let me know if you’d recommend changing the order to avoid the crowd especially on Saturday and Sunday.

Oct 24 (Saturday)

Time: It will be around 12pm/1pm by the time we reach Gatlinburg/Sugarland Visitor center.

  • Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail (Near Gatlinburg) OR
  • Anakeesta OR
  • scenic drive to Cherokee

Oct 25 (Sunday)

  • Newfound Gap and scenic overlooks
  • Kuwohi tower trail
  • Alum cave trailhead.
  • If we are not able to do the scenic drive to Oconaluftee/Cherokee on Saturday, thinking about doing it on Sunday Late afternoon. (Planning to avoid the Cades Cove during weekends)

OCT 26 (Monday)

  • Cades Cove early morning
  • Trails and spots along the way
  • Foothills Parkway

OCT 27 (Tuesday)

  • Revisit either Cades Cove or Kuwohi before heading back to Knoxville by 4pm. OR
  • Cataloochee Valley with Cove Creek Road.
  • Head back to Knoxville for the flight

UPDATE – Just Got Back From the Smokies!

We just wrapped up our trip to the Smokies, and it was absolutely breathtaking! The fall colors were incredible. I have never seen so many colorful trees in my life!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who shared helpful tips and suggestions. They really helped us plan our trip!

We did make a few changes to our original itinerary, so here’s how our trip went!

October 24 – Foothills Parkway
We drove along Foothills Parkway, and the views were absolutely stunning! The fall colors were only at the high altitude areas, and the scenic overlooks offered some incredible mountain views.

October 25 – Kuwohi, Cherokee, Mingo Falls & Blue Ridge Parkway
We started our morning at Kuwohi to catch the sunrise, and WOW! It was absolutely magical. Definitely a must-see!
A few tips for anyone planning to visit:
● There are no restrooms near the Kuwohi Visitor Center, but you can find restrooms near Newfound Gap, about a 20-minute drive away.
● I personally preferred watching the sunrise from the parking lot because of the unobstructed mountain views.
● The Kuwohi observation tower also offers beautiful views, but there’s an antenna near the sunrise viewpoint that can get in the way of photos.

After sunrise, we took a scenic drive down to Cherokee. The fall colors along the way were absolutely gorgeous, with vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow everywhere!

As you get closer to Oconaluftee Visitor Center, expect some bear and elk jams, especially since it’s elk mating season.

We later visited Mingo Falls. One important tip: The directions to the falls on the map were incorrect, so I would recommend getting directions from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center instead.

After that, we went for a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the colors were BEAUTIFUL!!! Every turn seemed to have another amazing view.

To make the day even better, we spotted a baby bear and elk on our way back!

October 26 – Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail & Cades Cove
We explored the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, and the fall colors were absolutely gorgeous! The entire drive was surrounded by beautiful autumn foliage.

October 27 – Cades Cove & Foothills Parkway
We started our morning early at Cades Cove. The first half of the loop was especially beautiful in the early morning, with gorgeous fall colors and peaceful mountain views.

Unfortunately, during the second half, we got stuck behind a leaf blower, which slowed things down quite a bit.

We decided to head back to Foothills Parkway, and I’m SO glad we did!
The colors had changed so much in just THREE days! The trees had become even more vibrant and red, and it was amazing to see how quickly the fall foliage transformed. It honestly felt like a completely different drive from our first visit!

For anyone planning to visit in the next few days, most of the leaves around Newfound Gap and Kuwohi have already fallen.
However, the lower elevations are looking absolutely gorgeous right now, especially Foothills Parkway, Roaring Fork, and the drive toward Cherokee.
Overall, the Smokies completely exceeded our expectations! ❤️

Trails/Hikes Recommendations for December

Taking my fiancée to Gatlinburg in mid December. We are both first timers so have been researching but don’t know a ton about the area. The main trails we’ve looked into are:

- Charlies Bunion
- Alum Cave to Mount LeConte
- Rainbow Falls
- Grotto Falls
- Chimney Tops

We are both in pretty good shape but don’t have much experience hiking and are concerned about the cold/wind/ice. Should any of these be avoided that late into the year if we aren’t used to these types of conditions? The only long trails (8 miles +) that we’ve looked at are alum cave and Charlies bunion. Any advice or other trails to look in to would be greatly appreciated.

4th trip to the Smokies (Oct 23–25) – looking for underrated spots

Hey everyone!

I’m heading to the Smokies next weekend (October 23–25) with a couple of friends. This will be my fourth trip, so I’ve already covered most of the popular attractions.

We’ll be camping at Cades Cove from Friday to Sunday and have two days to explore. This time, we’re looking for some lesser known spots, scenic overlooks, moderate hikes with amazing views, or any unique experiences worth checking out.

We’re also interested in spotting black bears, so any tips on the best places and times to see them safely would be appreciated!

Would love to hear your recommendations, thanks!

First Time Smoky Mountains Trip (Oct 23–26) - Need Suggestions on Our Itinerary!

Hey everyone!

We're a group of 4 visiting the Great Smoky Mountains for the first time from Friday, October 23 to Monday, October 26. We're planning to start early each day to avoid crowds and hopefully catch some beautiful fall colors and wildlife.

Here's our tentative itinerary:

Friday, Oct 23 – Cherokee & Pigeon Forge

  • Oconaluftee Visitor Center (hoping to see elk)
  • Short scenic drive along Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Alpine coaster
  • Explore Pigeon Forge

Saturday, Oct 24 – Sunrise & Gatlinburg

  • Kuwohi for sunrise
  • Newfound Gap and scenic overlooks
  • Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
  • Gatlinburg
  • Anakeesta (especially the open-air gondola)

Sunday, Oct 25 – Cades Cove & Scenic Drives

  • Cades Cove early morning (hoping to spot wildlife)
  • Spruce Flats Falls
  • Upper Tremont Road
  • Townsend and Little River Road
  • Foothills Parkway / Look Rock for sunset

Monday, Oct 26 – Adventure & Anything We Missed

  • CLIMB Works ziplining
  • Explore any scenic spots or activities we missed
  • Start our return journey in the afternoon

Would love your suggestions!

  1. Is this itinerary realistic, or are we trying to squeeze in too much?
  2. Are Cades Cove and Kuwohi worth visiting at sunrise, especially during peak fall season?
  3. Any hidden gems, scenic overlooks, or short waterfall hikes we shouldn't miss?
  4. Is Roaring Fork worth doing during fall, considering traffic?
  5. Are Anakeesta and the alpine coaster worth the time and money?
  6. Any suggestions for Monday morning before we head back?
  7. How bad should we expect traffic and parking to be during this weekend?

We're especially interested in fall foliage, scenic drives, waterfalls, wildlife, and beautiful sunrise/sunset spots.

Open to changing the order of days or swapping activities based on local recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

Proposal spots in the Smokies? Looking for a mountain view w/ a little room

Hey everyone, I’m going to Gatlinburg at the end of October and I’m planning on proposing to my girlfriend while we’re there. Right now I’m thinking of doing the Alum Cave → Mt. LeConte hike and possibly proposing around Cliff Tops, but I wanted to ask people who know the park better if there are any other spots I should consider.

Also how are the leaves looking did the hurricane make alot of them fall? lol how are the colors?

I really want somewhere on a mountain with a great view, especially if we get lucky with the fall colors. I know Charlies Bunion is another option, but from the pictures/videos I’ve seen it looks kind of tight and crowded for what I’m trying to do.

The slightly weird requirement is that I need a little bit of open space. We have this stupid thing we do where I pick her up and spin her around and call it a “rocket ship.” That’s basically my excuse for setting my phone down and recording us without her immediately realizing I’m about to propose. So ideally I need somewhere I could prop my phone up on a rock or something and have enough room to pick her up/spin her around without being right next to a cliff lol.

I’ve also heard Cades Cove has some really beautiful spots even though it’s obviously not a mountaintop, so I’m open to that or anything else in the park if there’s a specific overlook/field/trail spot people think would be better.

Smokey Mountains in November?

I'm taking my first hiking trip in November! Thinking of doing smokey mountains and other surrounding areas, specifically November 6-9.

My questions are mainly

  1. Are their any fall colors left around this time? If not what can I expect to see (naked trees, leaves on floor, greenery, etc)

  2. How cold are we looking at around this time? Will I be fine with a hoodie/jacket or am I definitely still shivering the whole way lol

  3. What are the best routes you like here, especially for the time frame

  4. And lastly if this time frame is worth it in your opinion

Thanks!!

Where can I car camp near the park?

I have an SUV and will attach a tent to the back overnight with the hatch door up. Obviously i know you can't park inside the park and do that but would like to do it somewhere else. Really anything on or near blue ridge parkway or the border of TN-GA-NC. A campground or spot somewhere in National Forest.

Hike recommendations-?

Hello all!

My partner and I are heading to the great smoky mountains for our 7 year anniversary Oct 30th-Nov 2nd and are obviously to do some hiking! So far, we’re planning on hitting: Charlies bunion, Andrews bald, kuowhi trail (for sunset), alum cave (to the bluffs, no time for mountain le conte unfortunately), and laurel falls. Given our very limited time, we want to see as much as possible! We’re also coming from a place in the US with very limited fall foliage so we’re wanting to maximize seeing that as well. Any suggestions welcome!

We are very experienced hikers and don’t shy away from a challenge! Our biggest constraint is honestly time and the fact we’re flying in so we can’t bring all of our usual gear. Thanks in advance!

Smokies in the fall with a toddler

Planning a trip in November to the Smokies. Can anyone recommend the best things to do with a toddler under 2?
What attractions are kid friendly and what trails are short easy hikes or stroller friendly?

AM Radio Reception Elkmont Campground

I'm camping at Elkmont on Thursday/Friday night and I'm wondering if I'll be able to use a portable AM/FM radio to pick up a station or two as I'm hearing cell service is a lost cause. Hoping to listen to the ALCS. Anyone have experience?

River/Creek Hiking

Hello. Spent years in the park but I'm looking for some recommendations I may not have come across in my time. I'm looking for your favorite trails/hikes (of any distance) that are great for river/creek views.

When are things reopening?

Anyone know when things will open back up? At least where I was at I didn’t really see any impact from the hurricane today. I’m hoping to do Charlie’s Bunion early tmrw (start 10am) but am disappointed because it probably won’t be open until later than that. Are conditions in higher elevations really that much worse?

Looking For Input On My GSMNP Itinerary : )

Hi everyone! It will be my partner's and my first time visiting GSMNP, and we are very excited, especially to see the fall colors there! We want to see as much as possible, but I also don't want it to be an unrealistically packed and stressful itinerary! If anyone could let me know if this sounds reasonable and like a good plan, or if you have any suggestions at all, please let me know : ) I super appreciate it.

For context, my partner and I love hiking and camping and don't mind getting up early.  We are going in October, so I know it will be busy. I am just a little worried about how much traffic there will be and am not sure if we should plan for the drives in between our campsites to take way longer than normal or just account for a little bit more time. If anyone has any tips or tricks for GSM, super open to any of that as well! Thanks : )

Thursday night — Arrive & camp

  • Arrive at Smokemont Campground
  • Set up camp and get settled for the night

Friday — Big hike + drive to Elkmont

Get up early to reach the trailhead by 5:30 AM

  • Choose one of the following hikes:
    • Alum Cave
    • Charlie's Bunion
    • Taking input on which one we should do!
  • Drive to Elkmont Campground for night two
  • Stop at Sugarlands Visitor Center on the way
  • Explore any worthwhile overlooks or stops along the drive

Saturday — Elkmont history + elk viewing

  • Spend some time relaxing at camp
  • Walk through the Elkmont Historic District
  • Pack up camp
  • Explore other nearby sights or activities in the Elkmont area
  • Head toward Oconaluftee Visitor Center
  • Arrive by 6:00 PM to watch the elk
  • Drive to Deep Creek Campground
  • Set up camp for the night

Sunday — Waterfalls + drive home

  • Wake up and hike one of the Deep Creek waterfall loop trails
  • Pack up camp
  • Begin the 8-hour drive home

Edit: Hi everyone, thank you so much to everyone who took the time to leave their thoughts! I really appreciate your time. I forgot to mention that, yes, all of those campgrounds are already booked. It's not ideal, but those were the only spots available because we booked last minute, so we decided to make the best of it and use that as a way to see lots of different parts of the Smokies! Also, we are headed south, so Deep Creek puts us a little closer to home, so that was slightly intentional (within our options).

I am a home builder and kind of a geek about historical rural architecture. I have looked for a couple of year unsuccessfully for plans on the historical home stead’s of Cades cove and catalogue. Is there a resource somewhere with drawings of these structures?

Cosby knob closed for aggressive bear.

So got a notice today that Cosby knob is closed for an aggressive bear until late November. That was my first stop for sobo through the smokies for me late October. Davenport doesn’t make much sense for me. Will the back country office divert to the cammerer tower? Seems like the gap between davenport and tricorner/pecks is less ideal.

Escaping the October crowds?

It has been almost 20 years since I have gone backpacking in the smokies but I was thinking of going one weekend this October. I know October is the busiest time of year. How crowded do the trails get these days that are not the AT or Mt Leconte trails? How far away from the roads do you have to go to get away from the crowds?
