Resources Freelancing in India: Start Here | r/FreelanceIndia community guide to jobs, rates, GST and scam checks

Welcome to r/FreelanceIndia, the community for freelancers in India. 57,000+ Indian freelancers, founders and the clients who hire them. Whether you're figuring out how to start freelancing or you've been at it for years, this post is the map: where to find freelance work, how to price it, how to get paid and how to stay safe.

Who this community is for

  • Freelancers in India: developers, designers, video editors, writers, marketers, virtual assistants and everyone in between
  • Students and beginners working out how to start freelancing in India
  • Founders and companies hiring Indian freelancers

Find freelance work

Hire a freelancer

  • Post with the Hiring (Paid) flair and include the role, budget, timeline and how to apply (Rule 3). The posting guide has a template.
  • Or post a job on the jobs board. It's reviewed, usually within a day, and applicants land in one dashboard.

Pricing and rates

Not sure what to charge? Read the rates wiki, then ask with the Pricing & Rates flair. Share your skill, experience and the client's country so people can give you a real number.

Getting paid: invoices, GST and tax

Stay safe: scam checks

Never pay to get work. Report anyone who asks for a "registration fee", your bank or UPI details, OTPs or account logins. Not sure about a company or a typing job? Check the scam-check wiki, then post with the Is This Legit? flair.

How to post here

Every post needs a flair: Hiring (Paid), Collab / Unpaid, For Hire, Ask the Community, Pricing & Rates, Is This Legit?, Client Stories, Tax & Payments, Wins, Resources.

The rules, in short: be respectful, no spam or self-promo bombing, clear and legit job posts, no AI-generated junk, no surveys, referrals or MLM, keep it relevant, and no "earn X in Y days" posts.

Quick answers

How do I start freelancing in India as a beginner? Pick one skill, make 3 to 5 samples (real or self-initiated), set up a profile with that work, and apply to small gigs. Post your portfolio with the Ask the Community flair for honest feedback.

Where can I find freelance jobs in India? Hiring (Paid) posts here, the jobs board, and your own network. Most long-term clients come from referrals, so do great work for the first few.

How much should freelancers charge in India? Start from what you need each month, divide by the hours you can actually bill (usually half to two-thirds of your working hours), then compare with the rates wiki.

Do freelancers in India need GST registration? Registration is required once your annual turnover crosses ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special category states). Working for clients abroad has its own rules (export of services, LUT). Check with a CA for your situation.

Is this job or company legit? If they ask you to pay, share bank details or move to Telegram before any contract, walk away. Otherwise post it with the Is This Legit? flair and the community will weigh in.

Say hi 👋

Drop a comment: what you do, which city you're in, and what you want help with this month. Freelancers here reply, and it's the fastest way to find your people.

Hiring (Paid) (₹20k/month, remote) Content Board Designer for health + biology YT Channel

• Upvotes

(Only message if wanting role long term, and want to begin fast)

Hi! We make educational content about the human body, health and the biology behind both, and I am hiring one person to own what we publish and why.

(Ideally UI/UX background, or biology background, or physics background and creative minded, intelligent, very good English)

Scope in numbers so it is clear:

6x Canva Board’s each month (in depth, structured to keep viewers hooked) There is no editing and no filming in this role.

What I am looking for is someone organised who is genuinely curious about how the body works. Sleep, hormones, nutrition, jaw and facial development, recovery. You do not need to know our subject already, but you have to want to learn it properly, because boards made by someone who is not interested look exactly like that.

Deadlines matter and feedback is direct. If you would rather be told clearly and once, this will suit you.

Message me if you’re serious and interested and I will send you the YouTube channel. Using that the trial piece will be creating your board following the standard of the videos.

Resources 9 ways to price client work, and when each one actually makes sense

• Upvotes

When I freelanced in 2025, getting a proposal approved often took longer than the work itself. Since then, I’ve spent a lot of time on how freelancers and agencies structure pricing. Here’s the breakdown I wish I’d had:

  1. Fixed price: clear scope, work you’ve done before. The risk is scope creep eating your margin, so list what’s not included.
  2. Milestones: bigger projects. Tie each payment to a deliverable being approved, not to a date. Deposit up front.
  3. Paid discovery: when the client doesn’t know what they need yet. Charge for scoping separately instead of doing it free inside the proposal.
  4. Retainer: ongoing work like maintenance, SEO, or content. Define hours or deliverables per month, and what happens to unused time.
  5. Hourly: open-ended or unclear scope. Fair, but it caps your income and clients watch the clock.
  6. Subscription: productized services. Works when you limit throughput, not scope.
  7. Packages: good/better/best tiers. Clients pick a tier instead of negotiating.
  8. Value-based: priced against the client’s outcome. Needs trust and real numbers from the client.
  9. Per deliverable: logos, pages, videos priced per unit. Simple and easy to upsell.

The biggest shift for me was choosing the pricing model before writing the proposal, because it decides the payment schedule, the scope language, and what you end up chasing later.

What do you mostly use, and has switching models ever made a big difference for you?

Hiring (Paid) [Hiring] Short-form ad scriptwriter (UGC / Reels) | Remote | Paid project

Hey! We need a scriptwriter to turn about 20 creative briefs into short, high-converting video scripts for a new consumer tech brand. These are UGC-style Reels and ads made by real creators: hooks, beats and a clear call to action.

What you’ll do

  • Turn briefs into 30–60 second scripts creators can actually shoot
  • Write strong hooks for the first 3 seconds, with variations to test
  • Keep claims honest and on-brand

Good fit if you

  • Have written UGC, Reels or performance ad scripts before
  • Know what makes people stop scrolling, and what makes them buy

Why this one’s worth it
It starts as a paid project. If it goes well, we want you to join us  full time remote across influencer marketing, product seeding and ads.

To apply: DM me 2–3 scripts or videos you’ve written so far along with your portfolio.

Resources 17F moving to India for college, how can I earn ₹7–8k/month independently?

Hi everyone! I'm 17, currently living abroad, and I'll be moving to India for higher education after Class 12. My parents will be supporting me financially, so I'm not in a situation where I urgently need money, but I really want to start earning on my own and become a little more independent. I'm hoping to make at least ₹7,000–₹8,000 a month while studying, and I don't mind putting in the effort to make that happen. A little about me: I'm fluent in English, Malayalam and Tamil, have good communication skills, enjoy writing, and am pretty good at artwork, painting and making clay sculptures. I'm also good at assignments and written work. I'm open to both online and offline opportunities, whether it's tutoring, freelancing, selling handmade products, taking commissions or something I haven't considered yet. I'd prefer something I can manage alongside college without a huge initial investment. For those of you who've been in a similar situation, what did you do to start earning? What are some realistic ways to make this amount as a student, and how did you find your first customers or opportunities? I'd love to hear about your actual experiences, not just ideas that sound good in theory.
