My family is from Utah (aka Mormon final boss) and I was born there.
Once you’re born, when you’re blessed as a baby they say “may she hopefully grow up to find a husband” or whatever. You never hear “may he find a wife” when they bless baby boys!
When you’re forced to go through the puberty you didn’t want and get those fat sacks of shit you never wanted to have on your chest, everyone’s calling you young woman young woman YOUNG WOMAN even if you don’t feel anywhere close to a woman and are not even a teenager yet.
A year or so after you find out you’re some sort of queer, gay marriage is legalized across the states. A few months after that, your church makes a horrible policy designating members in gay marriages as apostates and forbidding their children from being blessed or baptized until they’re 18 and, said policy requires those children to disavow queer rights to get those.
When you start high school, you’re forced to get up at 4am for this stupid class at your church called “seminary”. This would continue for all of high school and you’d end up hating it for robbing you of getting enough sleep and teaching you pointless stuff you don’t care about. You’d go to school feeling like a zombie for not getting enough sleep, because seminary yanked it away. One of the questions for a seminary test asks you to defend marriage being “between a man and a woman”.
One day when you go to church, the lesson is about marriage and how it’s only heterosexual. You immediately feel like you’ve been slapped in the face. At some point, the person leading the lesson asks the kids how they would defend marriage being between “a man and a woman” and you refuse to answer.
When you’re 16, the age where dating is a-okay, people begin to ask if you have a boyfriend. It starts to get grating.
At church, once you go into the young women’s room they pray about how we should be good wives and mothers, something you don’t want to be. Then there’s a “young woman” activity with the “young men” (actually just tween/teen boys) about ballroom dancing, and you sit out because everyone is obligated to dance with the opposite gender, someone you’re not attracted to. You cry in the bathroom about not being “normal” enough to want to dance with a boy.
A month later, they have an activity about planning your wedding, all while you’re 16 years old. You’d sit out of it and again, mope in a room alone for not being “normal” enough to want to marry a man.
Another month passes and the church finally rescinds its policy on the children of gay parents from a few years before, but the damage has already been done. There’s still their fucked policy on transgender people, which is basically “we totally accept you but if you do as little as use different pronouns we will give you membership restrictions.” You’re questioning your gender at the time, and this only further encourages you to repress yourself.
A year passes and quarantine happens. You don’t have to go to church for now, but you’re still forced to listen to this boring thing called “general conference” consisting of old people talk about things you don’t care about and are also forced to participate in this lame thing called “zoominary” which is basically just seminary on zoom.
Another year passes and you’re finally 18. You’re excited to graduate high school, but ultimately fail seminary and don’t graduate from that. You don’t care about being unable to graduate from seminary, but you worry you might be a disappointment to your family because of that. However, your actual graduation from high school is what matters to you more than your seminary graduation, as seminary graduation won’t get you a job.
However, after you turn 18, you’re pressured to go to these stupid “young single adult” wards. You refuse to, as you’ve heard horror stories of 30+ year old men hitting on 18-19 year olds there and don’t want to put yourself through that.
The pressure doesn’t end there, though. You’re then pressured to “take out your endowments” which is basically some lame ritual at the temple that ultimately means you have to wear magic underwear for the rest of your life. You don’t like the idea of that, as the top part of the magic underwear has symbols sewn into the part where your nipples would be, and the idea of that makes you extremely uncomfortable. You choose not to do it, but they NEVER STOP pestering you about it.
A tragedy happens in another country. Due to your empathy for the people suffering from that tragedy, you want to make a donation that would help the people there. However, people start demanding you give it to the church instead, because “oh you don’t know if donating to charities for that country will actually help the people!!!” when you know at that point that all the church does with the money you give them is either hoard it or use it to build temples in “exotic” countries.
You end up hating the Family Proclamation with every fiber of your being due to how much it was pushed on you and made you hate yourself as a result. You could recreate AM from I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream’s speech about hate to show how much you hate the Family Proclamation. If you could, you’d desecrate every copy of it you see as revenge for how much it made you hate yourself.
I wouldn’t live through all this all over again, not even if it meant I’d win a million dollars.
