Original Content Blacktober 21: Blake “Black” Protea (By me)
A drawing of my OC Blake in his Hunter X Hunter AU version. He is a Specialist with the ability “Manushya’s Greed: Thief of the 6 Treasures.” This allows him to steal the aura of a living thing he is making direct contact with and add it to one of his 6 “aura pools.” Each one corresponds to one of the 6 Nen types, and he can call upon said aura at any given time to effectively raise his affinity with one or more of the Nen types by using the corresponding aura. For example, if his Enhancement pool is 100% filled he can “burn” 100% of the aura to make his Enhancement techniques work at 100% effectiveness for about 10 minutes by using the aura of an Enhancer. There’s more info and limitations that I can’t put here (but it all exists in a Google doc). He has a Nen ability for each Nen type.
He was awakened to Nen when he was climbing Heaven’s Arena. He wasn’t as lucky as Gon or Killua and didn’t know what Nen was. So he was “initiated” and lost a hand in the process. However, he was saved by a combination of Lily, her girlfriend, and his ability unintentionally restoring some of the aura he was losing by draining the aura of those he was in direct contact with. He is eventually taught Nen by Lily, her girlfriend, and Sky (so he wouldn’t just be leaking aura all the time). At one point, Blake fights Hisoka and loses (but Hisoka sees some potential in him and lets him live so he can provide a better fight later). The encounter leads to Blake avoiding Heaven’s Arena until he can get strong enough to face Hisoka again (lest the killer clown kill him the next time they fight).
This version of Blake wears bandages under his clothes because I thought it would be cool to have him take them off sometimes to increase the surface area by which he can make contact with someone.

- My OC Blake is a Black man with brown skin that’s on the lighter side and a stove top haircut made of brownish red hair, and he has hairy eyebrows of the same color. A line from the bottom of his sideburns up is dyed black. Blake is looking at the camera with his split tongue out. His left hand is raised and emanating a dark gray aura. His nails are long and sharp, plus he has an ominous ring on each of his fingers that resemble spines curling around each of his digits. His right arm ends in a hook and gleams as it tears away bandages from around Blake’s left arm and hand. Over the bandages on Blake’s body, he wears a black jacket. While his right arm is through the jacket’s sleeve, his left arm is not through its respective sleeve. Leaving the jacket dangling half off him. Blake is also wearing a purple scarf that billows in the wind. The environment is clearly that of Heaven’s arena with a white tiled floor that’s damaged and cracked in addition to two tall pillar-like torches behind him on either side with a spiraling pattern of blue and white. “HEAVEN’S ARENA” is plastered in big blue letters on a wall behind him (although he partially obscures it). On top of the wall is a crowd of people, including my other OCs Lily, Viola, Adam, and Chloe.

Original Content Project 8: Bottle It Up and Red Planet (by me)
Some pieces I did for a painting and watercolor class last fall semester. We were supposed to choose artists to take inspiration from and I choose trenton_doyle_hancock (on instagram) and jooyoungchoiwow (on instagram). The thing I tried to capture most is how they often use vibrant colors and whimsical ways of representing things, including serious topics. They also pour a lot of time into their own personal worlds and stories so I decided to try to create a similar feel by creating something akin to one of their recurring characters. The “character” I made was the “Red Planet” meant to symbolize false hope. Part of the theme I'm going for is the Red Planet is a planet of blood. Only death awaits.
While not an artist, Martin Luther King Jr’s speech “Major Drum Instinct” also gave me a lot of inspiration and direction for what I want my piece to convey. MLK says “And all you are living on is the satisfaction of your skin being white, and the drum major instinct of thinking that you are somebody big because you are white. And you’re so poor you can’t send your children to school. You ought to be out here marching with every one of us every time we have a march. Now that’s a fact. That the poor white has been put into this position, through blindness and prejudice (Make it plain!) He is forced to support his oppressors. And the only thing he has going for him is the false feeling that he’s superior because his skin is white— and can’t hardly eat and make his ends meet week in and week out. (Amen!)” One of the themes I want to make sure I capture in my paintings is both a theme of scale but also interconnectedness. Specifically, how social issues and problems don’t exist in isolation. If we wish to make the world a better place we cannot just only tackle issues separately or act like they only affect one specific minority group, but have as holistic a view as we can manage. Additionally, just because we cannot immediately see how an issue affects us does not mean the effects aren’t there. For example, sometimes infrastructure was specifically designed poorly in order to hurt minorities only for it to come around and affect everyone and make every person’s life more difficult no matter their social classification.

1: A painting depicting a bunch of people uncomfortably squashed into a bottle filled with green vapors. At the bottom of the bottle is a town flooding with blood. Below the bottle is the Earth being torn in half as all of its contents are being sucked out and forcefully shoved into the increasingly cramped bottle.
2: A spaceship flying through space from a dying Earth towards the maws of a malicious looking planet with an orange skull-like face full of yellow teeth. The sclera of its eyes alternate between waves of yellow and pink while blood spills out of its mouth and other openings in its body. The Earth is half shoved into a bottle.
