I was inspired by yesterday's post to see what it might take to actually create a Republican district in CT. The answer: extreme gerrymandering, and the seat wouldn't even be that safe. Every other seat would be unflippably blue. (Yes, the performative red/blue dichotomy is tiresome, but we're stuck with it. For now.)
There's a viral maga meme that "New England is gerrymandered" citing 40% Republican registration (which I didn't verify, and don't believe). Aside from New England not being a state, Connecticut is simply not gerrymandered. Massachusetts, the birthplace of gerrymandering, is also not gerrymandered. The fact is that any of the New England states that could even do this, would have to go very far out of its way to coddle these people, and none of them would be successful without gerrymandering.
The base map is from the NYT's "An Extremely Detailed Map of the 2024 Election," which I used to build out the "R" district first. Turnout in that contest was.. unpredictably uneven.. and so it may not fully represent each town, but close enough for this. I matched the boundaries to existing municipal borders to keep it relatively simple while getting the population division as close as possible. It worked.
But it only works in practice if you're deplorable.
| District | Population ('20) | Results (R - D) | Partisan Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 720,798 | 41.1% - 58.9% | 17.8% |
| 2 | 725,518 | 39.6% - 60.4% | 20.8% |
| 3 | 718,873 | 55.0% - 45.0% | 10.0% |
| 4 | 717,676 | 35.3% - 64.7% | 29.4% |
| 5 | 722,651 | 40.5% - 59.5% | 19.0% |
| Statewide: | 3,605,516 | 41.9% - 56.4% | 14.5% |

I’m in the medical Homecare field, and my car is basically my office. Wondering how people have found Starlink in a car in this area. I’ve heard that tall trees can block a clear view of the sky, and it doesn’t work anywhere like a parking garage, etc. I’m thinking of fully replacing my other device, and I’m wondering how it would work as a standalone ISP.
I usually travel with two devices, one has Verizon and one has AT&T. There are still so many dead spots where neither one works. I’m thinking particularly about parts of Greenwich and other suburbs.
Appreciate your thoughts!

The U.S. Department of Justice announced this week that it has opened an investigation into the firearms permitting process in two Connecticut cities.
The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division announced via a press release that it is investigating Waterbury and Middletown over the two municipalities’ “policies and practices” for issuing firearms permits.
In certified letters sent to the mayors and police chiefs in the two cities, the DOJ explained that it intends to investigate whether local authorities are “unnecessarily” delaying or denying gun permits.
It unclear from the release why the DOJ is singling out Waterbury and Middletown or whether this is part of a larger push by the Civil Rights Division to investigate local firearms permitting in other parts of the country.

Ahead of the November election, our local newsroom at the Bloomfield Community Dispatch set out to conduct an in-depth, on-the-record evaluation of the candidates running for the open 2nd State Senate District seat (representing Bloomfield, Windsor, and North Hartford).
Our editorial board initially invited both Democratic nominee State Rep. Maryam Khan and Republican challenger Atty. Timothy Knotts to a live, televised debate to be moderated by respected former Bloomfield Mayor, former State Rep., and attorney David A. Baram.
When Rep. Khan’s campaign did not respond to the debate invitation, we converted our eight debate modules into a formal written policy questionnaire, followed by eight granular follow-up questions examining:
• FOIA accountability: whether towns should be barred from using taxpayer dollars to bail out officials personally fined by the FOIC.
• Municipal legal spending: requiring explicit Town Council votes before outside law firms are retained.
• Property taxes: establishing caps for fixed-income seniors tied to federal COLA rates and fully funding PILOT.
• Utility fees: independent audits of Eversource's "Public Benefits" charges and returning overcollections pro rata to ratepayers.
• Municipal audit delinquency: targeted penalties against administrators rather than cutting state aid to schools.
Atty. Timothy Knotts answered all 16 questions on the public record. Rep. Maryam Khan did not respond to the debate invite or the written questionnaire.
Regardless of party registration, voters deserve elected officials willing to answer tough, substantive questions about how they intend to govern.

I’ve been so interested in trying out a Pole class as I’ve heard it’s SO GOOD for your upper body strength. Does anyone have any studio recommendations? Central CT preferably:)

The New Haven Independent reports that David Salinas has another dispensary coming to State Street. All five of New Haven’s permitted recreational dispensary slots are spoken for.
As an activist who helped pass homegrow, this looks like culture-vulture business to me: borrow cannabis culture for credibility, build a retail footprint, and sell the expansion as community progress.
Where’s his push to let small growers enter the market? Where’s the work to open doors for independent businesses? From what I see, the ambition here is to dominate a broken market. Where’s the ambition to share the opportunity with folks who were arrested and targeted during the war on drugs?
Connecticut doesn’t need another entrepreneur explaining why his next cash register is a win for all of us.
A CT Examiner opinion piece also describes his public support for Trump during the 2024 election. Customers deserve to know whose business they’re supporting.
A retail portfolio isn’t a community résumé.
What has Salinas actually done for small growers and independent operators? If there’s work worth recognizing, put it on the table.

Hi everyone,
I’m gathering feedback from adults 18+ about household life skills and interest in potential programs or resources.
The survey is intended to help identify the topics adults [including parents] would like their children to learn about, rather than making assumptions about what would be useful.
Take the survey here:

hello all, looking for thoughts on the various emergency rooms in CT! pretend that commute time does not matter. I recently left yale.
here's a blurb about Yale ED so that hopefully people can give me the kind of info I want about other EDs: theres usually 100-150 patients in the department at any given time, probably around 30 nurses working on a shift, there is a good amount of high acuity and critical care but on the flip side the ED is organized so that some assigned areas have no high acuity at all. the pay is mediocre, the management does their best while being squashed under the higher ups, there are way too many hall beds, and the retention is not great and we have a lot of travelers.
how is HH in comparison? L+M, Backus? Middlesex? Middlesex Marlborough?

Whether you’re a new arrival or a longstanding Connecticut resident looking for the ideal five digits to append your mailing address, which ZIP code is the best to seek out?
To attempt to answer that question, we pulled in a wide range of data. But what we quickly realized is that there is no one answer to the question.
Some ZIP codes have obvious appeal — 06492, home to the fictional Stars Hollow! — and others obviously none, like one of the three ZIP codes in the state with estimated populations of zero.
Tell us what you think.

Saw this the other day. Is this license plate legit? Blacked for privacy.
It’s not a special plate. Two letters followed by a dash and then five numbers. Pretty standard format these days. But those five numbers appeared to be all zeros.

I saw it’s suppose to be 90 days but I’ve been so busy. Yes obviously not an excuse. But of course there’s tricks and nothings ever easy. I need to do all these steps to register and honestly haven’t got around to it. Really going to try and get it done within the next 2-3 weeks.

I have anthem through access health here in CT. Did anyone else lose coverage when their autopay was shut off last spring when CT temporary assistance was rolled out? Trying to figure out how many others were affected
