Former CSKA Moscow boss Fabio Celestini is a strong contender to be named Burnley’s new head coach.

Burnley sacked Nicky Hayen on Saturday following a 4-1 loss to Lincoln City, a result that left them 22nd in the Championship, the league’s final relegation place.

Celestini, 50, features prominently among the names to be appointed Hayen’s successor, according to sources with knowledge of discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships.

Sources added Celestini has already travelled to England with his staff, but the details of the potential appointment are still to be agreed.

Celestini has been out of management since departing CSKA Moscow in May.
