Manchester City have been found guilty on almost all of the charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations.

The sanctions have not been decided, with all possibilities remaining on the table, and City are expected to appeal.

City have been found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges, according to sources briefed on the matter who spoke anonymously as they were not authorised to do so publicly.

The PL KMI panel voted 4:1 that Botman should have been sent off for his challenge on Jackson. However, they also voted 3:2 that the VAR was correct in not intervening.

'KMI Panel: This was a split decision, with the majority of the panel feeling that a red card for serious foul play should have been awarded, 4:1. Botman was out of control, lunging at speed, making forceful contact with Jackson despite his leading leg missing the Villa attacker. The non-VAR intervention was supported, 3:2, on the basis it was not a clear and obvious error.'

[Laurie Whitwell] Michael Carrick to be given more time to turn Manchester United form around

Thumbnail

Michael Carrick will be given more time to turn Manchester United’s fortunes around after a meeting of the club’s hierarchy on Monday.

Carrick’s position as head coach appeared under serious threat following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth, a result which left United 16th and without a win in their last eight matches in all competitions.

It was their second successive loss by a three-goal deficit, after and meant the club have only gained seven points in the Premier League this term — their lowest tally after eight games in 40 years.

However, following talks on Monday between the club’s senior leadership figures, including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, the decision has been made to give Carrick and the players more time.

Head of recruitment Christopher Vivell would prefer Julian Nagelsmann, having worked with the German coach at RB Leipzig. Nagelsmann is also understood to be interested in taking the job, but Wilcox would have to be persuaded.

Antonio Conte has made it abundantly clear in recent interviews he is itching to return to management and would welcome another shot at a Premier League club.

There are plenty of figures at United who would choose the fiery Italian, believing his combative nature is exactly what the ailing club needs right now.

However, senior figures have doubts that the former Chelsea boss would be able to work cohesively in the current footballing structure in place.

[Oliver Kay] Is the Premier League short of stardust?

Thumbnail
nytimes.com

It is a complicated picture, with a multitude of factors, but perhaps the flip side of the Premier League’s greatest selling point, its strength from top to bottom, is that it has become less attractive to the biggest talents in the game.

It certainly doesn’t look a whole lot of fun for creative players right now.

Florian Wirtz, at Liverpool, is the most obvious case, but Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden have all found it heavy going at times over the past couple of seasons.

Then you look at Michael Olise, Luis Diaz and Harry Kane at Bayern Munich, at Anthony Gordon, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal at Barcelona and, in particular, at Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at Paris Saint-Germain and it looks like they are playing a different sport, one played with joy and freedom of expression.

Trophies, glamour, recognition, status, sunshine (in Spain at least), the opportunity to express yourself without fearing that every game is going to be a war of attrition.

It is not just that the Premier League lacks stardust by comparison.

It is also that stardust often seems to vanish into thin air in the Premier League, lost amid the blood, the thunder and the driving rain.

A spell in the Championship might be what Manchester United needs

I used to follow Man Utd quite avidly in the 1990s. More recently I’ve got back into watching football and have enjoyed watching the PL as a neutral. It’s sad to see what’s become of Utd under the Glazers. Good teams usually build from the back. It was scandalous and idiotic for Utd not to buy defenders in the summer. It doesn’t matter whether Carrick is sacked or not. Changing managers at this point is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. It probably has to be done but we know it won’t change the fundamentals. The club is disastrously run and 90% of the players aren’t good enough. Fernandes especially is a disgrace. He’ll never be as popular among United fans as Carrick was as a player. No manager could turn this shitshow around, especially with the club so laden with debt. A spell in the Championship might just be necessary to force the parasitic Glazers to sell. It’s hard to see how else United can escape from this purgatory.

Bruno Fernandes has been left out of Manchester United’s starting line-up against Bournemouth.

Head coach Michael Carrick has decided to drop United’s captain to the bench as he bids to turn around his team’s form in a pivotal moment.
