Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Mourning/Loss Saying goodbye to my best friend today, I can’t believe it

My little man Meow is being put down today, I just can’t believe the day is here and I am never going to see him again.

He came into my life 11 years ago, found him at the bottom of the garden and said hello to him, little did I know that he would change my life. He kept showing up in the garden, coming into the house wanting food and in the end we took him in as one of our own. We later found out that his owners moved and abandoned him so he was coming into our family.

We called him Meow because he was so loud! He demanded food he would meow the house down, when we didn’t have a cat flap he would meow on the fence to wake my parents up and even got complaints from the neighbours that he was too loud!

Sadly he had some health issues, he had Cat asthma and when lying in the bushes in summer in the dry it would cause him to have attacks and we would sit with him until the attack has passed. One of the scariest issues is when he drank poison, we thought we lost him then, luckily he made it through then. Finally, this latest scare is too much, a few weeks ago he started loosing a lot of weight dropping down to 3.8 kilos and didn’t want to eat anything. Something wasn’t right, took him to the vets and they assumed it was a thyroid issue, got some medicine and we thought he was on the mend. Sadly not, we took him back to the vets and he had to be drained of fluid around the lungs. We thought he would be getting better from there, but a few days have passed and he just hasn’t, his breathing is so bad, it’s not fair on him and not a good quality of life.

Today, I have just had the news that the decision is to say goodbye to him. It still doesn’t feel real and I can’t comprehend the house without him. He was such a good boy, was never nasty you could touch him anywhere and he would hardly ever scratch or bite you.

Fly high little one, I hope we gave you a good life nonetheless! Life can be so cruel sometimes and I will never forget you! ❤️

Edit: thanks to everyone sending love, I’m upvoting everything and I appreciate it all!

Delivery driver here. Recently I came across a video of an Amazon delivery driver throwing a package at a house cat for no reason while on the job. The video disturbed me. It disturbed my wife, who was also a part time delivery driver at one point. It was disgusting and a disgrace of human etiquette. I deliver in a town south of Dallas, and this town is home to dozens possibly around 200 if I had to count of cats and kittens. Both domestic and strays. I never miss them. Some are shy, some I have to call, some run straight to me and roll over. Many customers even offer them to me for adoption, which I reluctantly refuse. Many of them I take pictures of and send them to my wife. I always pet them when I get the chance so much so my cats at home freak out over the unfamiliar scent. I used to bring cans of wet food and give some out at certain houses and the homeowners never breathed a single complaint. Earlier this year I rescued a kitten in a parking lot a day before the snow storm hit and we kept her at home until she passed away a week later from a respiratory infection. One of my current cats, Sal, is another orange stray that we have taken care of since February and he’s been a sweet boy joined by his adopted brother and sister, Teddy and Salem.
Cats are extraordinary creatures and I’ve seen nothing but pure love and joy from them. Some are born in survival and others are born in a home. We should never treat such majestic beings with cruelty. That goes not only for cats but for all animals.
The last picture is Sal, the stray we had given a home.

Advice My cat is ruining my sleep, and I'm reaching my breaking point.

Post image

I honestly just need to vent because I'm so exhausted, and I don't know what to do anymore.

I have a young, unneutered male cat who constantly meows at night because he wants to go outside. He starts around 1 AM, and eventually, I can't take it anymore, so I get up and feed him. He then meows for another to ten to fifteen minutes before finally going back to sleep. By that point, my sleep is already ruined, and it takes me around an hour to fall asleep again. Then he wakes me up at 3 AM and starts meowing all over again, except this time, he keeps going for hours, sometimes until 6 or 7 in the morning. This happens every single night, and I'm honestly exhausted.

He has a little brother, a kitten, and they play and wrestle before bed until they're tired. So it's not like they don't get enough playtime.

My cat was attacked by a stray before and I was absolutely devastated. I genuinely thought I was going to lose him. I don't want to go through that again, and I'm terrified something might happen to him if he goes outside.

I can't afford to get him neutered right now. I live in an underdeveloped country, where veterinary procedures like neutering can be very expensive relative to what I can afford. I'm a student, I work, and I'm the primary financial provider for my family. My mother is sick, I have so many responsibilities and expenses, and I'm trying to save money for other important things.

I know some people might say I shouldn't have gotten a cat if I couldn't afford everything, but I didn't go out and buy one. I found him on the street in a horrible and sick condition. I brought him home because I wanted to give him a better life. I took care of him, gave him medicine, and eventually adopted him. I took responsibility for him because he needed help, and I genuinely wanted him to have a chance at a better life. I don't regret saving him, and I love him so much.

I already spend a significant portion of my salary on my cats. I try to buy them good-quality food and the vitamins they need because I don't want them to be malnourished or miss out on anything important for their health. I cut back on my own spending to make sure they have what they need.

The lack of sleep is affecting me so badly that I honestly don't know how much longer I can keep doing this. I have constant headaches, and I can't focus properly on my work or my studies. I already have so many responsibilities, and I'm struggling to keep up with everything.

This morning, I actually spent time crying because of how overwhelmed I felt. He woke me up again during the night, and after keeping me awake and ruining my sleep, he just went to bed in the morning and started sleeping peacefully like a little baby. Meanwhile, I'm left exhausted, frustrated, and trying to somehow get through my day when I barely have the energy to do anything.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? How do you deal with loving your pet so much while feeling completely overwhelmed by the situation? I know neutering is important, and I am saving money for that. But it could take some few more months.

After over 15 years we said goodbye to this girl today. She fought hard and went out on her terms. I did my best to keep her comfortable and warm for as long as possible. She is a great friend and an even better family member. She will be missed.

Edit: Thank you everyone for the kind words and support. Almost a week ago we saw the doctor. That’s when we decided to keep her comfortable as long as possible. Today has been difficult everyone gave loves and said goodbyes. She is an amazing family member and will be missed so so much.

Medical Questions New cat dad here.. is she in heat or is something wrong?

She’s been purring all day, rubbing against everything, licking herself and she’s been walking with her belly almost on the floor. Caught most of it in this clip. Found her outside, think she’s about 5mo.

I know it’s likely heat and this is probably a stupid question for you experienced cat servants but I’m just learning and want to be sure. Please let me know if I should be concerned!

Cat Picture - OC Meet Kiro, my first cat! 🐱

I recently adopted a 4-month-old kitten named Kiro, born on 6 June 2026, and I'm so happy to finally have my very first cat!

According to his previous owner, Kiro is a mixed-breed cat, and his mom is supposedly somewhat related to a Persian traits.

I understand that without a pedigree, he'd generally be considered a Domestic Shorthair or Domestic Longhair rather than a specific breed. But I'm curious about which traits he might have inherited from his parents side?

Some said British short hair? I'm not sure, any help is appreciated regarding this :)

I've ordered a water fountain for him to drink, which should be arriving soon! For food, I'm currently mixing Me-O Ocean Fish wet food with Kitchen Flavor kibble and Royal Canin for kitten. I'm still learning as a first-time cat parent, so I'd also appreciate any advice on his diet, hydration, or anything else I should prepare for a growing kitten.

Thanks, everyone! ❤️🐾

EXPERIMENT #1: IS IT THIRST?
Method: Exposing kittens to clean and slightly cooled water.
Results: Kittens still don’t understand it, and after several attempts of licking it lost any interest and waddled away.

They just start licking the lamp from time to time, all together at the same time, can anyone explain why? 😅

My 20 year old family cat passed away last night, she was an outdoor cat most of her life until her late teens. We wouldn't see her for days/weeks on end sometimes and she'd come home with spider webs in her whiskers or her stray cat boyfriend yelling at us to let her out after her absence. Her 9 lives were well spent and I'm glad she passed with me talking to her. The sadness is still here but really I am shocked, with how small and independent she was, to have lived as well as she did

Mourning/Loss I’ve posted a few times about her issues but this will be the last

Post image

My 15 year old girl had chronic vomiting issue most of her life, multiple blood tests and ultrasounds and vet visits and different medications. Only thing that helped her feel more herself were steroids for a few months until even those started to fade.

Yesterdays ultrasound showed that she has enlarged lymph nodes and the only way to diagnose it is to go through a biopsy and then possibly chemo which there’s no way I’m putting her through all that after what she’s already been through.

Yesterday she ate around 1 pouch of wet food all day, she’s lost a lot of weight the past 6 months or so and I’ve finally pulled my courage through to ask my vet for a home euthanasia. I’m 35 years old in November and this hands down has been the most difficult decision to make. Ever.

I’ve been balling my eyes out the second I think of her gone.

Hold on to your loved ones dearly cause you never know when is their last day.

Tapeworm (white) and margaret (black and white.) They're turning a year old soon, and they've gotten so big, but they haven't changed much. I found them in my yard at eight weeks old. When I first took them in and they were still skittish, they would sprint and hide in corners whenever I entered the bathroom, where i'd set up a temporary living space. If they were in separate corners, margaret would scream, and tapeworm would immediately come running for her, even if he was scared of my presence. It's been nearly a year now, and they're still practically glued together.

Stories My Lola is sick

I hope that's the right flair; sorry if not.

This is what my Lola looked like in June. It's October and now her right eye may have to be removed as it's bulging and leaking. [I don't need medical advice as we've been to the vet multiple times and are going to an ophthalmologist tomorrow afternoon. She's on meds and they seem to be helping.] Today, they confirmed she has hyperthyroidism, but that's "common" for older cats. So more meds.

I got her in 2013 when I loved in S.Korea and brought her back to the States because she's my lil heartbeat. I've tried to give her as comfortable and peaceful a life as I can. I'm also trying to find a silver lining in acknowledging that I got my sht together to where we can even actually go to the vet, see a specialist, and afford care so if there's pain, I can get her some relief.

But I feel like I've failed her. I think I'm looking for comfort from some other Cat People who could really understand the bond. 16 is about the average of my cats and she's not too far off (15 in December) but I dunno man... It never feels like enough time. To her credit, she's still demanding treats and acting normally. She's sleeping and purring next to me right now.

Hug your kitties for me. And share pics maybe.
