Build Upgrade 5700X → 5800X3D or just jump to AM5? (9070 16GB, 1440p + Quest 3)

Got a 5700X and a 9070 16GB. Mostly play at 1440p and do a fair bit of Quest 3 VR.
Is the 5800X3D still worth it as a last AM4 upgrade, or should I just move to AM5 at this point?
Curious what people would do in my situation

Build Complete Built my first ever PC after 15+ years of console gaming and it was one of the most fun/rewarding things I’ve ever done.

I’ve never been enough of a gamer to think about building a PC, but I’ve been getting back into Fortnite after I quit during college in 2019 (playing on a ps5 this time). I noticed the jump from 60 to 120 fps and then started using kbm on console to prep for when I could spend some money on a pc… and man. A locked 240fps on a 240hz monitor looks out of this world.

Got a ryzen 7 7800x3d and a 5060ti with 32gb ddr5, fried a motherboard in the first build attempt (lol) and had to make a windows bootable usb from my Mac (ugh) bc I’ve never had a windows device.. and after all that, I’m left with this beast of a machine (by my standards) that I created.

I just wanna look at it while it runs lol I’m completely obsessed with this thing. I wish I would have done this before but I didn’t have adult money. Probably not the most relevant thing in the world but I just felt like sharing bc nobody else I talk to really cares to hear about my “computer stuff” but this was really an awesome experience. I’m so glad I didn’t buy a prebuild if for nothing else but the learning experience.

Build Upgrade Cheaper to max out AM4 platform or buy mid-tier AM5 Microcenter bundle?

Hi all,

My brother's PC is (imo) adequate-ish with managing of settings, but according to him, he wants to upgrade soon for new games like the recently released Modern Warfare 4 and potentially GTA 6 if the rumors of Q1 2027 are to be believed. Either way, I think he'd most benefit from a better CPU and GPU. As far as GPU goes, he will have to find a deal on one at some point, but that can be kicked down the road as a separate purchase.

For CPU, I'm not fully sure which path is best to take from the current specs and prices:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

4x8 Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO SL DDR4-3600 for total 32GB

EVGA RTX 3070 Ti XC3

2TB NVMe + some 500GB-1TB SATA SSDs

EVGA 750GQ Gold

Dual 1080p 165Hz monitors

Basically, I think he could buy a 5800X3D for roughly $300-350 to max out this (surely?) dead platform and get 2-4 more years out of it, or buy the cheapest Microcenter AM5 CPU/Mobo/RAM bundle for $400. The only issue is that that bundle has a 6 core 7500X3D with mATX and 1x16GB DDR5. I'm sure he can offset some costs by selling off his old CPU/Mobo/RAM, which can be used to buy another stick or a whole new 32GB DDR5-6000 kit and selling that one stick.

Is that 7500X3D worth getting as an upgrade over the 5600X and for the future socket upgradability? Will the 3D V-Cache bring his fps up at 1080p enough to run decently? After reselling old parts, he should be better off just having the same core count but with newer architecture + 3D V-Cache and upgrade path rather than maxing out the AM4 socket with a 5800X3D for marginal cost difference of $50-100-ish and no available future upgrades, right?

The GPU will need to be done at some point later regardless of the CPU platform, so we'll decide on a decent AMD GPU later.

Thanks.

Troubleshooting I'm Tech support, Stumped

Naturally, as I think that the majority of us are in this subreddit, I am tech support for all my friends; However, recently I have had my first "unsolved" mystery...

My buddies computer failed to post. So he calls me up and asks me to help him, the first thing I made him do was re-seat the RAM naturally, and then check single sticks. as that seems to be the quickest thing to cause any issue. Then I realized that we were working with a solid white VGA LED. So naturally, we try some Graphics card Debugging, reseating it, unplugging connections from the power supply, and the Graphics Card, plugging them back in etc. Plugging it into a separate PCIe slot.

Also notable is that he has no NVME Storage devices. He only has a 2.5' SATA SSD. I also had no means to a spare Graphics card, Spare PC etc. So I was not able to verify that the Card hadn't died. I also tried the "turn it on, unplug video outs, turn it off, turn it on, turn it off, plug video outputs back in and then turn it on" trick, that didn't do anything. Now I am wondering if it's a BIOS issue. We did reset CMOS by Bridging JBAT1. Didn't work, I am going to flash it, but I obviously can't get it to post.

Finally, after I was at my wits end, he tells me that he had the computer on over night, and then it just turned itself off and now won't post. So now I'm straying towards a potential Power Supply failing issue. This seems most likely, but I don't think he want's to go down a "Fix It" rabbit hole...

We are working with system specs of -

CPU: i7 10700k

RAM: Vengeance 32gb kit (2x16) 3200 cl16

Graphics Card: RTX 3080 Founders edition

MB: MSI MPG z490 Gaming Plus

Power Supply: RM850e (I Don't know what year, but I do know that it's new enough to have those braided style cables)

All In one water cooling, don't know the brand, and case looked like a h7 flow.

Any ideas that could help would be awesome, otherwise I guess I'll tell him to take it to someone :'(.

The only reason this upsets me is because I've never came across a computer issue that I wasn't able to troubleshoot and this would be my first one. I don't want a loss on my record.

Discussion My PC was easy to build and surprisingly annoying to work on afterward

About a year and a half ago I spent weeks picking parts for my PC. Checked GPU clearance, cooler height, airflow, PSU wattage, basically every compatibility detail I could think of.

Last weekend I decided to add a second NVMe drive.

The free M.2 slot is underneath my graphics card. Fine, remove the GPU. Except the PCIe latch is almost impossible to reach with the CPU cooler installed, and I have to take off the GPU support bracket first.

Eventually got everything out, installed the drive, and put it back together. Then figured I might as well clean the dust filters while I was down there.

Turns out the bottom filter only slides out from the back, which means pulling the entire tower out from under my desk. Naturally, I'd made the cables exactly long enough to reach.

None of this is a disaster. It's just funny that I spent so much time thinking about how the parts would go IN and almost none thinking about how I'd get to them again.

Next time I build, easy access to storage, filters and cables is going on my list alongside airflow and temperatures.

Do you actually consider how easy a build will be to maintain and upgrade, or is that something you only appreciate after living with it?

Build Upgrade Upgrade or Buy? Help a lost noob

• Upvotes

Question: Is my PC upgradeable/ is it worth upgrading or should I plan on buying a newer one?

Context: I have always just gamed on PlayStation. My wife and I have been playing our PS4 for like 8 years, never felt the need to upgrade to a PS5 but we know we will upgrade to something eventually.

A friend gave me his old gaming pc that he was done with so I could get into sim racing. It was a prebuild from Cyberpower that he tinkered with. I have been driving on Assetto Corsa with a single monitor and the PC has done just fine. The only plan I had for my set up was going with triple monitors down the road.

I figure I could get the PC up to snuff and ditch the console. We play on a projector that we would upgrade too. We play a bit of everything but have spent days upon days on games like God of War, Elden Ring, Bloodborne, COD MW3 but also Hollow Knight, Death's Door and whatnot. Definitely don't care about having the most insane graphics. I mainly care about not being able to play a game because my PC can't handle it. I want the PC upgrade to be a longer term investment and not feel lacking in a couple years.

We will watch an occasional movie off of it but other than gaming that's it. I don't edit media, stream, or much of anything outside of very basic laptop usage.

PC Specs:

CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

GPU AMD Radeon RX 5700

SSD Samsung 850 Evo 500gb

SSD #2 Sandisk X300 256bg

Ram 32gb DDR4

Board Asrock B550AM

Power EVGA 600 watt Gold 80 Plus

Cooler Master A71C

Fans 3 Aprevia 120mm

Case Cyberpower H550

OS Windows 11

Monitor Dell S2721DGF

I have read different comparisons of what CPU and GPU would give the most similar performance to a PS5 Pro.

I read stuff about parts being too old to upgrade with the wrong ports and whatnot.

I put all of my components on the different sites but they just told me that my CPU and GPU were well balanced without bottlenecks.

Then my eyes crossed. Like I said, I have always been a spoon fed console boy, PC world is weird.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this!

Troubleshooting PC occasionally will black screen while gaming, then a few seconds later shut off

• Upvotes

hey all. please read full post if you can.

i've recently noticed in my (incredibly) budget build, periodically (as in probably one every week to two weeks) i've been playing something mildly intensive for my system, usually fortnite, will run just fine for about a half an hour, then, almost randomly, will totally cut video instantly, then a few seconds later my computer will shut off. it's not an instantaneous shutoff like if you were to unplug the power cable or trip the power switch on the back of the PSU, but more like something overheating. thing is, i've been monitoring my GPU temps and rarely do they get over about 83 degrees celsius, which i know is a little toasty but shouldn't be triggering a thermal protection. i just recased my computer from a crappy montech x1 (technically the inland version) with molex fans to a fractal pop air. i was thinking maybe poor airflow or the cheap molex fans in my montech could be the culprit but this machine has pwm fans and half-decent airflow (which albeit are daisy chained but still) and it just happened again last night.

curiously, it doesn't seem to be related to how long i play, or how hot things are. it happens the same way any time that it does. screen cuts, then maybe 3-5 seconds later, machine shuts down. no error on startup. sometimes i'll run several solos matches on fortnite in a row with no problems at all, then boot up something like quake champions and play a couple matches on high graphics settings and have no issues, even running the AMD adrenalin stress test doesn't seem to trigger it. other times i'll play two games of fortnite and it'll shit out.

i just put in a new cpu cooler a couple days ago, thinking maybe it was some sort of cpu overheat from my stock cooler, didn't help. ran memtest86 today, nothing. checked crystaldiskinfo, nothing.

power supply is an ASUS tuf gaming 750w modular, which is only two years old and has given me no trouble to speak of (yet). it's a pretty decent unit as far as i can tell, not the best but it's certainly no slouch. my graphics card, however, is an rx 580 4gb which i bought used. i did realize today that i had some conflicting drivers from a previous nvidia card i had, so i wiped everything and reinstalled my amd drivers. no problems yet but as i said it's never very consistent. i am wondering if maybe it's possible for my graphics card/driver to be the culprit considering it isn't an instant shutdown but rather a black screen and then a power down. i usually up until recently would leave this machine on in my room while letting the screen go dark. not the smartest decision but i don't think it would really do a number on things.

i don't believe i've updated my bios since i got this board. i was curious if this could be the problem as well. trying to be as thorough as possible. whenever i boot up event viewer after these crashes i usually get a 6008 error and nothing really informing around it.

spec sheet (don't judge my parts list lol, i'm a musician and computing is but a hobby for me, not something i tend to dump much money into):

board: ASUS gryphon z87

processor: intel i7-4770

cpu cooler: thermalright assassin x 120r

gpu: sapphire pulse rx 580 4gb

ram: 4x 4gb DDR3 sticks, two are samsung from a dell machine i had, two are patriot from a project pc

storage: inland platinum 1tb SSD

power supply: asus tuf gold 750w modular

case: fractal pop air

Build Upgrade What should I upgrade when I’m on an extreme budget?

I bought a prebuilt in 2020 that has served me pretty well. I’ve been playing a lot of deadlock, but I’m averaging 50 fps with semi-frequent stutters. I am wanting to upgrade my PC slowly as I’m on a pretty extreme budget due to health issues that make me unable to work consistently. The specs are:

Motherboard: AsRock A320M
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100
GPU: Radeon RX 570
RAM: 32gb DDR4-3200
1gb hard drive + 250gb SSD

I guess technically my main question is what GPU should I look for. I’m thinking I need to find a cheap (ideally <$200) GPU, but I’m not sure which one would be a decent bump in performance for relatively cheap. I’m also thinking about purchasing a Ryzen 5 5500 from Amazon as it’s around $90.

The only upgrade I made to the pre build was buying the 32gb of RAM in 2021, so I’m wanting to stick with AM4 so I can take advantage of the RAM/avoid having to pay for the exorbitant prices of DDR5. Would it be worth it to upgrade my motherboard as well?

I also have a 75hz monitor and would like to get a better one and use the one I have as a secondary monitor. Not a huge priority as I don’t even get 75fps in deadlock with my current specs, but any suggestions for cheap monitors with a better refresh rate?

Troubleshooting New PC builder, bios qs

• Upvotes

Hey all,

First time long time(God I'm old)... so I bit the bullet and built my first PC because my son has been wanting one and ps doesn't seem the route for me going forward. I built it with a Ryzen 7 5800x3d, asus b550 tuf gaming wifi plus 2, asrock challenger 9070(non xt), 32gb ddr4 3200, 2tb ssd, semi modular, and a case from new egg. Main question, benchmark showed me that I got a few issues so I looked into it. Based off what I have, what BIOS settings should I have set.. like when I play a game the AMD GPU tells me to alt r and enable graphics setting but when I do it tells me I have to enable it on bios.

I'm not sure if anyone will know what I'm talking about, I'm just new to PC and have no idea what these things mean. Is there a way to tell me what I should have set(like just by knowing my set up or if someone has the same one) or should I delete this and post with screenshots the things im seeing. My apologies for asking questions with out some screenshot help for what I'm saying but i just finally worked up the courage to ask.

Also, did I f myself by not giving myself an upgradeable route. I did research, alot, but didnt know all the little stuff til after I bought. I saw ram prices and my research said... ddr5 gives you 10% more speed but is double tbe money so I thought staying am4 was smart but now I know that to upgrade I'll need a new cpu, motherboard, and ddr5. But I know I'm good for a few years so I'm not kicking myself too bad

Build Upgrade Dusted off the old PC, need some advice

This was my gaming rig a few years ago and it served me well, but life got busy and I quit using it. I've recently gotten back to PC gaming, and I'm just curious if this system is still decent nowadays? Is it worth keeping and upgrading? Or would I be better off starting fresh?

I was going to attach a pic but it's saying that's not allowed so I'll type it out I guess.

GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super

RAM: 32GB DDR4 @2666 Gskill Trident

CPU: Intel core i5 8400 @ 2.8 ghz

I'm not looking for 4k or anything crazy, just 1080p on triple A games and the occasional shooter.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Gaming OC 8G Graphics Card, WINDFORCE 3X Cooling System, 8GB 256-bit GDDR6X, GV-N307TGAMING OC-8GD Video Card

I bought in 2022 finale succumbed to dog hair and overuse. So I am looking to replace.

Know very little about pc hardware, that’s why I copied the entire name from amazon as I don’t know what’s relevant.

I would like to not worry about replacing it for a few years and don’t like to think about game requirements.

Would like to stay below $1,000. Obviously cheaper is preferred but would rather spend money if it was worth the investment.

Suggestions?

Build Upgrade Help! I'm buying a DDR5 RAM kit and I don't know if it's legit

Hi! I found a pretty good deal for a ddr5 kingston set, and tomorrow I meet the guy I'm buying from. We're meeting in a parking lot so I don't have any way to test the kit beforehand. I have these screenshots from him and I want to know if it's actually legit, since AI signaled me some problems with the serial number and the tRC on XMP-6000. Here are the screenshots he sent me:

Build Upgrade Looking for a 4tb NVMe

Currently researching into adding a 4tb NVMe before prices explode even more. Currently have a 2 tb gen 4, and trying to decide between a gen 4 or 5 as a backup/additional storage. Mobo is MSI MAG X870E, which supports a gen 5, though will run at half speed unless I disable the 40gb USBC. Either option will not affect my usage. Looking at Microcenter, the one closest to me has a crucial T700 with heatsink for the same price as a T500 with heatsink, but for fear of potentially damaging the NVMe while removing the heatsink, and voiding the warranty, I’m considering a gen 4 for around the same price ($600). Are there any good 4tb gen 4 or 5 NVMes that will not break the bank?

Build Upgrade Help with GPU/PC upgrade?

• Upvotes

Hello, I’m looking into upgrading my graphics card because I’m struggling to run some games (like bloodborne new pc port??) and have been pushing off getting a new one with the inflated prices for the last few years, but it doesn’t seem like I can escape that.
I’m also relatively inexperienced and built my pc 6 years ago with the help of a friend, so can anyone help me with recommendations based on my set up?

I’m not trying to replace everything but only what’s needed, trying to spend no more than $300 on gpu… possibly used?

cpu: amd ryzen 5 3500x
gpu: rx570
mb: b450m
32gb ram

Troubleshooting PC won’t boot — Yellow DRAM or White VGA/Green BOOT lights

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, my PC was working perfectly fine before I unplugged it for about 2 months. Now when I turn it on, the fans and RGB work, but there’s no display.
I have an ASUS ROG Strix motherboard with two RAM sticks. When both RAM sticks are installed, I get a solid yellow DRAM light. When I remove one, the yellow light disappears, but I get a white VGA light and green BOOT light instead. My monitor still says “No DP Connection.”
I’ve already tried reseating the RAM and replacing the CMOS battery, but nothing has changed.
Does anyone know what could be causing this or what I should try next? Thanks!

Hi all, I'm looking to build a gaming pc. I found out about microcenter in this sub and luckily for me, there's one about 40 mins away. I checked their website and saw a cpu+ram+motherboard bundle with a sale on a graphics card. I wanted to ask if this is a good deal and how this set up holds in 2026. I have attached a link to cart. Thanks in advance to all.

Build Help Help ! Motherboard and CPU compatible ?

Help ! I’m a first time builder , if you can even call me that. I have basic knowledge and am pretty good with my hands. I’m helping my step son build his first PC (more like I’m doing it)

Long story short , everything seems to be connected, I go to turn on the PC and all that turns on is this red flashing light. The motherboard and the CPU are Ryzen 5500 and the motherboard is B550M pro vdh wifi .

Any thoughts ? Any suggestions? Every time I try to turn it on , nothing happens and I press this black button on the panel in the black and it keeps flashing red but stops after a few seconds.

After doing some research, it said something about BIOS flashing and I did this hard drive thing , extracting some files from MSI and yeah I’m lost as hell. Any help or suggestions ?

Thanks !!

Build Upgrade Upgrade my 5800x to Ultra 5 250K+?

Hey all.

I have a 5800x with 32gb of RAM and a RTX 3080 10gb.

I recently noticed in Gears of War E-day, I'm pretty sure my CPU is a bottleneck as I've been getting some questionable performance, and my GPU isn't at 100% usage in game. Also, I've been doing a lot more hobby development work using Claude.

At first I considered a 5800X3d, but that's like $340 right now.

Now, my local microcenter, has a Ultra 5 250KF+ and 32gb of ram with a B860 motherboard for only $500. Sounds like a more worthy upgrade.

They also have an Ultra 7 270k+ combo with a z890 mobo for $630, so maybe that is worth the price premium?

Now I know the 1851 is essentially a dead socket right now, but these prices are soo much cheaper than the equivalent AM5 platform.

Build Help BUILD help please (9600x + 5070ti or 9700x + 9070xt)

If both combo cost around the same, which one should I pick? I plan to use them for 7+ years.

I am running a 1440p monitor and mainly play FPS games like cs2, battlefield, delta force etc… Sometimes play AAA games as well.

I have done some research on these spec, 5070ti got better RT performance and lower power consumption while 9700x got better cpu performance.

Can anyone share your experience if you have these combo?
