ragebait title aside… a couple things first…
a) this is not a florida appreciation post. nor is it co-signing any politics they may have.
b) im a lefty loony, bernie loving, mamdani worshipping, take all my money and give it to the poor, progressive social democrat.
that being said…
WHY ARE OUR ROADS SO AWFUL???
this was my 2nd time in florida this year for work. tampa and an hour inland, palm beach and an hour north. everything is so clean and well maintained! i95? not a single piece of trash/debris on the shoulders, no tagging, no off color shoddy paint job cover up, and there were WORKING light posts, about 50 feet(?) apart, all the shining the same color, lining the entire hour drive. it was really soul crushing to see. lol.
and from what little I know… their tax burden is not as heavy as ours. so wtf are we doing wrong?
is it our people? our govt? our priorities? i know our roads are more heavily traveled (though this was the same case in tampa- super clean!)… but there has got to be an explanation as to why almost all of our freeways look like a garbage truck dumped its load on it every day instead of the yard.
even when i was in mamdanistan a month ago, in MIDTOWN of all places, there was not a single piece of trash on the floor. im not even exaggerating. so this can’t be a red state/population size thing. if nyc can… we 1000% can too.
what is going on? genuinely asking. how do we fix this??
and yes, i know there’s a lot of important things to fix and cleanliness may be low on the list*, but we can hold space for several things to be true at the same time, that need attention.
thank you, if only for letting me rant.
*how we show ourselves first to each other, and then the world, is arguably important. it’s not just vanity. it’s our core.
ETA…
I understand there are going to be good and bad parts everywhere.
I specially brought up NYC so people wouldn’t make the population comparison.
Let’s not miss the forest for the trees… we shouldn’t be accepting our roads being trashed, littered, and not picked up after / taken care of.
