Serious Replies Only How is it to be trans in Ireland ?

Hi everyone, I (F25) went to Ireland from France for a work venue a few weeks ago and i really enjoyed the life there . As you might know the presidential election in France are running this year and we are in a pretty bad situation. I'm preparing myself to leave my country if the far right win the election, mostly because i'm trans and i'm scared for myself and Ireland seems good option as i feel good there, loved the culture and the food and the history, the relation to nature, sea etc.. I'm just Wondering how is the situation of LGBT+ in you country ? The access to healthcare for trans people ? the everyday life ? Is there a big community ? I'm curious :)

Thanks

Work New job, am I entitled to any pay from the government until I get paid?

Started a new job which is monthly pay, today is the first payday so I won’t be paid til the 27th of November. I came from a job and not social welfare so is there anything I can claim to help with money until then?

Work Leaving job after a month?

Hello, I know this has been asked before but I’d like advice on how I should relay it to my employer.

I’m planning to leave in a few weeks before Christmas as I have another opportunity lined up.

Just some background on the job itself: Everyone has been very nice and welcoming, it’s a great team but at the same time there is a culture of eating at your desk, and gossiping about other people.

My first two weeks, I had no equipment to even do the job I was hired for. They hadn’t ordered my laptop which needed to come from the IT team based in the UK. I was pretty much left to shadow other people when available, or sit at my desk trying to look busy. The top managers, who were the ones who interviewed me and were responsible for my onboarding were either too busy to sit with me or away on holidays.

I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing each day because different people of the team either worked from home on certain days or were taking holidays. It’s been very chaotic.

It’s now my third week and I’m still waiting on news for my IT equipment, let alone the work accounts I’m supposed to have access to.

I guess what I want to ask is, how do I actually word my resignation letter? Do I say the truth about how I didn’t like the disorganisation, or do I say something along the lines of “it wasn’t a good fit.” I ask because they genuinely seem to feel sorry about the way things were handled, but I’m also thinking about the commute long-term. I have to take 2 buses for what would have been a 14-minute drive if I had a car. A job in the city centre with the same commute time for one bus would be better for me.

Thank you!

TL/DR: I’d like advice on how to word a resignation email. Not liking the commute time and the disorganisation of the workplace.

Irish Culture Mother in law stories?

I was dating a guy who at some point told me he was a momma's boy. I told this to an Irish friend and she said it was common in Ireland to be a momma's boy... I don't think so? Or at least it had not been my experience until quite recently. I'd love to hear other stories tho, but I think it's not an Irish thing only.

Travel Why do some men romanticise moving to Asia?

I’m from Asia and moved to the Ireland for what I hoped would be a better quality of life. So far, quality of life is soooo much better apart from weather.

So I find it strange when I see Western men talking about booking a one-way ticket to Asia and staying there indefinitely almost as though it’s some kind of paradise.

I understand the appeal of sunshine, a lower cost of living and a different pace of life. But sometimes it feels like dating work and getting attention or validation is a big part of the appeal too. I wonder whether some men imagine they’ll have more success with women there than they do at home and that makes me uncomfortable.

I can understand a young person wanting to travel and experience something different. But when it’s an older man who seems particularly excited about going to Asia to meet women, especially much younger women, I find it more alarming. I wonder what he’s looking for and whether he sees those women as individuals or has a fantasy about them.

Obviously, people move for all sorts of reasons and there’s nothing wrong with moving to Asia or dating someone there. But I can’t help wondering how realistic or sustainable some of these plans are, especially when it comes to work, visas, healthcare and building an actual life.

Food & Drink Is Ireland the best Burger country in the world?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've been thinking this for a long time, but after just having another exceptional burger I think it needs to be said. We have to be one of the best countries for Burgers in the world. The breath of excellent burgers across the country, I can't think of elsewhere that ive seen better.

Now granted, I've had the fortune to go a bit more in depth on this, I can't say I've tried dozens of burgers in other countries. But I do know what's on offer here, I've had burgers all across the country and you are never too far from an excellent burger.

Let's start with the meat. We already have some of the finest beef in the world, so it being close to home and in abundance is a great first step. You know it's quality, you know it's clean, you know it will taste great, what more do you want.

We have amazing variety, any specialty burger place, you are almost guaranteed a great experience. The odd few don't stand out, but by and large most earn their place by being unique enough to tickle your fancy. Tall burgers, we got em, smash burgers, we got em, greasy sloppy boys, we got em, crispy chicken burgers, we got em, fat pub grub burgers, we got em. Even supermacs, great fast food burgers. Chipper burgers, we got them too. You can find cheap burgers still. You can even buy excellent burgers in the supermarket. I had one of my favorite burgers ever recently from lidl. There's even some Brazilian places popping up that have excellent and unique burgers too.

I lived in Dublin city and used to get delivery of a new burger place every week. I've tried most places that delivered and I've also tried most in person to confirm. Lots will point to a couple of favorites over and over, but genuinely, there is so much on offer, it's easy to find a favorite.

But it's all over the country. I had my favorite chicken burger ever in a garden center in Kerry. I just had a 5 star burger in a packed on a Tuesday night place in Cork. It's not just Dublin. Any place that does decent food usually has a great burger on offer.

So I ask ye, do you agree that we are a great if not the greatest burger country on earth? I'm not here to pick favorites, just acknowledge the leap forward in food. We don't have much of a cuisine but I feel the burger scene is right up there. Gotta appreciate what we have sometimes.

Health & Medical Anyone gotten a vasectomy? What way do the appointments work?

My current job is a mare to get single day leave so just trying to plan how a vasectomy would work.

Can I just walk in, get the snip, and shuffle out?

I've read through a few clinic's FAQs. They seem to have an order of Consultation, Procedure, Sperm test. I'm trying to work out what the timeline for those appointments would be. Like the sperm test is obviously a while after its done, but is the consultation and snip done on the same day? Could I bang it out in an afternoon.

Relationships My Irish partner is grieving and I feel like I’m drowning too. How do you support someone without losing yourself?

My partner recently lost someone close to him, and he's taking it really hard. I love him and want to support him, but I'm finding myself getting completely consumed by the grief too.

One thing I'm struggling with is the drinking. I'm not Irish myself and I'm not really used to alcohol being such a central part of coping or socialising during difficult times. It feels like every gathering, conversation, or remembrance involves drinking.

I don't want to make his grief about me, because I know he's the one going through the loss. But I'm exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed, and starting to feel like I'm carrying both his pain and my own stress about the situation.

For anyone who's supported a grieving partner, how did you balance being there for them while also protecting your own mental health? And if you're Irish, is the alcohol side of things something that eventually settles down, or is there a better way for me to navigate it without seeming unsupportive?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Housing Selling apartment in Dublin and buying In the country possibly Gorey?

Hi guys, I'm selling my one bed apartment in Dublin to buy a house as I want a fresh start and the dream has always to have a house with a garden and big dog.I'm a 40 year old women on my own and I'm just sick of Dublin. Gorey seems like the best option as I could afford a house down there from selling my apartment. I thought Gorey would be best as it's still only one hour from Dublin, and it's on the East Coast, and I won't be isolated . I'd done a few viewings down there, and I liked the feeling, but still, I don't know the estates well. I really liked a house in Newborough which I was going to make an offer on. But is it safe for a woman on her own? As you dont have the security you do in apartment block. Will i have irish people around me? When i got the offer on my apartment, the deposit was going through. I freaked out and pulled out altogether. I knew selling and buying would be scary, but this has been so stressful. I also have controlling family members who like to criticise and interfere in everything I do, so I think I got burnt out. I hadn't gotten the energy to even think about going forward. And what if the transition doesn't work out and I know where to live and my apartment is gone. The estate agent said I won't get a buyer like this again because of the fire safety defects. If I could have it all done tomorrow, I would. I'm not sure if it's fear or my intuition telling me not to go ahead as it is still quite safe where I am. But im going to have to do it sometime and theres bo other easy way atound it. Any body any advice on this.

Shopping Harvey Norman refusing remedy for pillows on "hygiene" grounds. €3k mattress and pillows causing back/neck pain. What are my rights?

Hi all, looking for some advice on consumer rights in Ireland.

A few months ago we bought a King Koil Platinum mattress (around €3,000) and 5-6 Pillow Number pillows (around €70 each) from Harvey Norman Liffey Valley. The salesperson recommended both specifically for our needs.

What happened:

- From the second day of use, my wife and I both developed back and neck pain.

- We know it usually takes a couple of weeks to adjust to a new mattress and pillows, so we stuck with them for about two months hoping it would settle. It didn't. The pain got worse, and we've now stopped using them completely.

- The mattress at home feels much softer and bouncier than the floor model we tested in store, which felt properly firm.

- We have a newborn, so this has made feeding and settling the baby on the bed really difficult.

We emailed Harvey Norman with photos. They've passed the mattress complaint on to King Koil and are waiting to hear back. For the pillows, they replied that they can't take them back due to hygiene.

My questions:

  1. Does a hygiene policy override the Consumer Rights Act 2022 when the product was recommended by the salesperson for our specific needs and turned out not to be fit for that purpose?

  2. Since we waited past 30 days in good faith to allow for the adjustment period, are we still entitled to a refund, store credit or price reduction?

  3. Does the difference between the mattress we tested in store and the one delivered give us extra grounds (goods not matching the sample or model)?

  4. Has anyone been through something similar with Harvey Norman or King Koil? How did it end?

  5. Is the Small Claims Court worth it if they refuse?

We've also contacted the CCPC, but we'd love to hear from anyone with real experience. Thanks!

Postage & Shipping Customs duty and handling fee?

Why do we all accept this in ireland, €6.15 per item for anything arriving from 1 November. That's the €3 customs duty plus the €2 handling charge, with 23% VAT on top.

There are some other rules Ireland does not follow under EU law but we do these two! Why don't we protest like the farmers did on fuel.

Enough is enough, we have expensive fuel, houses, rent, food and now just top this on for the Christmas shopping. What is wrong with our government!

How can we organize a protest?

Adulting What's the main reason you would go to a nightclub?

Adulting How does Halloween (trick or treating) work in 2026?

Recently moved into a new build estate after living abroad for close to a decade. There's a good few families with small kids around. Don't have kids ourselves and haven't been kids for over quarter of a century so would like to know what's expected nowadays?

Fully appreciate this is entirely optional but see it as a good chance to meet the neighbours etc.

Can we just open the door from 6-8 or similar? Do we need to decorate? Do you distribute something to each kid or let them pick 1-2 bits from a bowl? How much stuff should we buy in?

We got some mini bags of Maltesers, Squashies, Swizzels in but looking at it now it's hard to gauge how long it will last (4-5 variety bags). Any advice welcome!

Random Opinions on the vape flavour ban?

As title says, curious to see others perspectives, I’m not big on the mad flavours they have nowadays but I love a good rip of menthol, as someone that used to smoke 20/30 fags a day moving to the vape has helped me get off them but now i’m wondering what will happen when this comes into law and what everyone’s thoughts are on this :)

Work Am I screwed?

Starting my first job tomorrow. They said they need my passport to photocopy but it’s expired. I looked online and it says an expired passport is no good except sometimes if you’re Irish with an Irish passport (because they need the passport just to make sure you’re eligible to work in Ireland) but I’m Lithuanian, born in Lithuania with a Lithuanian passport. But I’ve lived in Ireland since I was 2.

It takes months to renew in the embassy. So I was looking for any other form of identification I can apply for and found the public service card, which would only take 7 days, so its better because atleast I’ll have something in a week to show my workplace and I can have that excuse that I’m waiting for it and it’ll come very soon.

The public service card also needs a valid passport, but it said ON THEIR WEBSITE that they allow you to get one with other documents if it’s an emergency. So I go there and tell them all of this and that I need this card and present my passport and proof of residence and my birth certificate and leaving cert etc. They told me that they don’t do this emergency thing at all, (even though I read it on their website.) and that they need a current passport and can’t accept anything else

They told me they wish me luck and asked what job I’m doing (retail) and they said to bring my passport and birth certificate and just hope. They said they “should” be okay with it. But I’m pretty sure they’re not.

Am I going to get sent home on my first day?

Serious Replies Only Feeling left behind?

I am a 25f (short, curvy, red hair) and have never been in a serious relationship. I’ve had short term relationships where I have been the dumpee and not the dumper, constantly being told ‘you’re funny, kind, beautiful but…’ and I am honestly wondering what’s the point anymore. Or I get hounded by men who pursue me and then when things start getting a little serious it’s ’I’m not ready for a relationship’. I’ve put myself out there, even joined a yoga club during the summer to see if that would help in anyway. I don’t get approached often on nights out (which are rare because what do you mean it’s €10 for a drink?!) I work for myself (started up my own at home business this year), I go to the gym 3 times a week, I look after my health and I’ve done a lot of work on sorting myself out with insecurities and mental health.

All I seem to be attracting is men looking for casual things, and once I shut it down because it’s not what I’m into I’m being told I’m ‘too much’. A lot of my friends are in relationships and have been for years, Christ I even have married friends! It’s made me look at my own life and wonder what in the name of all that’s holy is wrong with me.

Is anyone else feeling like this or has anyone felt like this?

Irish Culture I'm an Englishman travelling to Dublin for work and I'll be there on the 11th November - is it insensitive for me to wear a poppy?

Edit: Glad I asked and thanks for all the replies. I'll leave it at home.

To my shame (given my heritage) I'm not as clued up on this as I should be, but I am well aware that the history of the British army in Ireland is negative to put it mildly (yes, this could be phrased better, but words are had and I'm doing my best not to insult anyone!).

At home I'll wear a poppy every year to remember those who fought and died in my family, but I'm concerned that it could be seen as a provocative act in Ireland.

Am I overthinking this (I do that a lot!) or should I leave the poppy at home?

Serious Replies Only Nervous about psychiatry appointment, wondering what to expect?

Hi all,

I have an appointment with the psychiatry department of my local adult mental health team soon and I'm feeling really nervous as I don't really know what to expect for the initial appointment. I was referred by the on call psychiatry team in A&E after needing stitches for a physical injury. I was with the service as a teenager and it's the same catchment area so hopefully they will be able to recall my old file.

I'm wondering about a few things:

I'm not sure how long an initial assessment appointment usually lasts. It's scheduled for half an hour before what would be a typical time to have lunch, so I'm a bit worried that's how long it'll be, which doesn't seem enough time to cover everything. I know routine appointments are quite short, but I imagined a first appointment could be about an hour?

If psychiatrists usually prescribe medication if needed in the first appointment or if they offer you a separate appointment shortly after the initial one to discuss this, and if so, how often they review things in the very early stages. I know when things are more stable, it can be every few months, I'm just wondering for work.

I've been having difficulty with my mood for a really long time so I think I have a good idea of what could be going on for me, and I also work in mental health, but I don't know how receptive they might be to my thoughts or if they typically ask what the person thinks? It seems like sometimes people can be deemed as "invested in a particular diagnosis" or "seeking a particular diagnosis" if they share what they think.

Also, I'm living at home with my parents for half of the week which is my permanent address and in the catchment area of the mental health team, but I also have a temporary six month college placement in another county for the other half of the week, and I'm worried that will be an issue, as they might say I'm out of area for half the week? I think it will definitely come up as I told the doctor in A&E what I do, and it's not something I can really lie about.

Thank you all so much for any insight/advice, and hopefully no nasty comments, I'm really anxious about the whole thing, so just trying to be prepared. Thank you.

Random HR folks, how do you actually decide what to do for staff at Christmas?/IRELAND

To all the HR fellows reading this, I am just curious and want to know how Christmas presents are decided for the team, how this works behind the scenes. Hampers, vouchers, a cash bonus, an extra day off, a night out, how does a company land on one?

Do you survey staff, take a vote, go with whatever management likes, or just repeat last year? 😅

And what about remote staff or people who joined in November? Do they get the same thing posted out, or do they quietly miss out?

Eager to hear what’s actually worked and what’s flopped at your place.

Am I The Gobshite? Is my MIL rude, or am I just being too sensitive?

My MIL is very much the stereotypical Irish mammy to four sons. We get on well. However, she does things quite a lot that I find a bit rude.

I’m not Irish, and have no other family here, so I very much consider my husbands family my family too.

At a dinner out with my MIL, my husband and his three brothers, she turns to everyone and says, "wow, it’s just so nice being here with my sons".

Me: the only other one at the table 💀

She does this kind of stuff all the time. I guess it hits harder because my parents treat my husband the exact same as their own kids. For example, my parents always get him a nice birthday gift even though they are overseas, and yet I never get one from mine that are here. That’s just one more small example.

Am I being too sensitive?
