Mod Post Taking action against bots

We’ve heard your concerns about the increasing prevalence of bots in the subreddit and over the past week we’ve been taking steps to address it.

We’ve been trialling a new app called Bot Bouncer and it’s extremely effective. In fact, it’s quite scary just how convincing some of these accounts are. They’re able to communicate in a way that’s very natural, understand Irish culture and slang and generally blend in incredibly well. We’ve observed a number of you interacting with these accounts believing they were genuine users.

For the past week, we’ve been manually reviewing every flag from Bot Bouncer to make sure it’s accurately identifying accounts and that we’re happy with how it’s working.

Having now trialled it for a week, we’re confident enough in its accuracy to allow Bot Bouncer to issue bans itself going forward.

What if you’re falsely flagged?

Obviously, no automated system is perfect. If your account is incorrectly identified as a bot and banned, you’ll need to contact r/botbouncer via modmail to appeal the ban directly with them. Once they’ve reviewed your appeal, please let us know the outcome of their decision so we can follow up on our end where necessary.

We’ll continue to monitor how it performs and make adjustments if needed.

And perhaps most importantly, if you’ve spent the last week arguing with someone in the comments and thought “there is absolutely no way this person is real”… you may have been onto something! 😂

Mod Post Regarding News/Current Affairs/Global Events.

This is not the place to discuss these issues. This sub is a more light-hearted place where users can ask questions and advice on everyday issues.

We have seen another surge of qiestions about politics, News, whats going on in the States etc.

There's plenty of other subs on Reddit which deal with these issues.

Postage & Shipping Customs duty and handling fee?

Why do we all accept this in ireland, €6.15 per item for anything arriving from 1 November. That's the €3 customs duty plus the €2 handling charge, with 23% VAT on top.

There are some other rules Ireland does not follow under EU law but we do these two! Why don't we protest like the farmers did on fuel.

Enough is enough, we have expensive fuel, houses, rent, food and now just top this on for the Christmas shopping. What is wrong with our government!

How can we organize a protest?

Am I The Gobshite? Is my MIL rude, or am I just being too sensitive?

My MIL is very much the stereotypical Irish mammy to four sons. We get on well. However, she does things quite a lot that I find a bit rude.

I’m not Irish, and have no other family here, so I very much consider my husbands family my family too.

At a dinner out with my MIL, my husband and his three brothers, she turns to everyone and says, "wow, it’s just so nice being here with my sons".

Me: the only other one at the table 💀

She does this kind of stuff all the time. I guess it hits harder because my parents treat my husband the exact same as their own kids. For example, my parents always get him a nice birthday gift even though they are overseas, and yet I never get one from mine that are here. That’s just one more small example.

Am I being too sensitive?

Random Clever hacks/tricks that really work!?

I'm curious about peoples go-to 'hacks' or clever tricks for day to day stuff! Ive a few cool ones that save time and stress and would love to have some more up my sleeve!

The two great ones that work every time for me are:

Unblocking nose: Pinching nose, and while holding bend head down towards ground and then up towards ceiling, and repeat for and 10/20 seconds at a steady pace. Always opens my stuffy nose!

Cooling a warm can quickly: If you have some ice and cheap table salt handy, fill a pot with enough water to immerse the can, and chuck in an generous handfull of ice cubes and few tablespoons of salt, and stir rapidly. The salt forces ice to melt rapidly which requires a thermal exchange and it pulls heat from the can to do so. Takes about 2 minutes

Adulting Non traditional or unusual career, job or income?

Hello!! I’m always interested how people make a living from unusual careers or jobs that wouldn’t be the norm😊It’s interesting that people can make a living from being creative or finding a niche to make income!

Do you or anyone you know make a living in something that isn’t the norm? Or have you a business in something that is different from average job?

Adulting Question for the married women?

After a few years of marriage my wife has zero interest in me and does nothing to work on our relationship.

We dont go anywhere as a couple unless I arrange, unless its a family day out. Even then its mostly/nearly all the time me arranging things.

Sex is very rare and normally before it starts I am told to hurry up Which has totally turned me off her. I dont want to be intimate with someone that is going through the motions. Not an inkling of physical interaction ever really. She gets dressed in another room behind a locked door. Our kids are teens and even on weekends when they are off on sleepovers, if we go for a pint and come back to an empty house I sometimes think maybe tonight will be the night! She goes straight upstairs and puts on massive PJS and a huge housecoat and basically thats the signal! Not a shred of interest in anything remotely romantic or intimate. Its soul destroying.

She keeps telling me she loves me but I am now starting to think she just loves the security provided for her by my salary. She makes the dinner and does the house stuff and I chip in with that at the weekend when I am not working. Most of the time she is in her little office doing her bit of work - she is self employed but she only makes about 10k per year. Enough to keep her going but I pay the mortgage and all of the bills and I pay to keep two cars running for us. When she is not in her office or doing house stuff she just doom scrolls. I slept in the spare room last night - I got up early to go to work. She came down the stairs as I was getting ready to leave and went and made tea then sat down and started doom scrolling. 7am. Barely said bye to me!

Is this normal for early 40s women? I am similar age and I am quite fit, have all of my own teeth etc - watch what I eat etc.

Is this the end?

Random Opinions on the vape flavour ban?

As title says, curious to see others perspectives, I’m not big on the mad flavours they have nowadays but I love a good rip of menthol, as someone that used to smoke 20/30 fags a day moving to the vape has helped me get off them but now i’m wondering what will happen when this comes into law and what everyone’s thoughts are on this :)

Travel Why do some men romanticise moving to Asia?

I’m from Asia and moved to the Ireland for what I hoped would be a better quality of life. So far, quality of life is soooo much better apart from weather.

So I find it strange when I see Western men talking about booking a one-way ticket to Asia and staying there indefinitely almost as though it’s some kind of paradise.

I understand the appeal of sunshine, a lower cost of living and a different pace of life. But sometimes it feels like dating work and getting attention or validation is a big part of the appeal too. I wonder whether some men imagine they’ll have more success with women there than they do at home and that makes me uncomfortable.

I can understand a young person wanting to travel and experience something different. But when it’s an older man who seems particularly excited about going to Asia to meet women, especially much younger women, I find it more alarming. I wonder what he’s looking for and whether he sees those women as individuals or has a fantasy about them.

Obviously, people move for all sorts of reasons and there’s nothing wrong with moving to Asia or dating someone there. But I can’t help wondering how realistic or sustainable some of these plans are, especially when it comes to work, visas, healthcare and building an actual life.

Work Emotional after handing in my notice?

I've just handed in my notice this morning. I've been at this job for 7.5 years and whilst there has been some downsides, I overall have loved this job and I have a great relationship with my Employer and everyone that works here. I am literally bawling my eyes out now because I feel so many emotions.

I am scared of regretting moving on, I am scared that the people wont be nice where I am going to. I am scared I'll miss my coworkers.

The move makes complete sense as regards career progression and increase in salary. It is also a massive difference in commute time.

Not sure why I am even posting this. Just want to let my emotions out and for someone to tell me things will be fine!

Serious Replies Only Outside Pyjamas? (In the storms)

I know the average Reddit user might not be this person but Ireland is small and people know people so asking here anyway.

I've never understood the outside Pyjamas thing, personally would be embarrassed to be caught out in my pyjamas.

The last few days have been wild and I've started to see people in a raincoat with pyjama bottoms and runners.

Wearing them to the shop especially.

Seem people pushing buggies back from the shop with bits in them whilst wearing "jammies" in a storm. So it's "planned" in those circumstances.

I guess my question is does anyone know anyone who does this?

I've never understood how you'd A)feel comfortable when you get home in them and B) not be freezing when you're out in them.

Adulting How to confirm gardai report tracking?

There is a park in our community with drug dealing activity.

Dealers causing issues from driving motorbikes on one wheel past babies, making parents feel unsafe to use the park playground, users are now going to the park to buy. It's a disaster.

The community is ringing the local Garda station regularly.

We're not seeing any action by the gardai in response to these calls. It's a 2 minute drive from the station.

Is there any way to check these reports are being logged rather that somebody in the station just saying whatever gets the person off the phone?

Health & Medical Health insurance - who has used level health?

I've been with laya for years, never an issue. Just looked into level health and their prices etc are very good. But the cover in some private hospitals and for scans looks a bit light. I think a lot of it is pay and claim rather than layas direct payment service. Can Anyone share experiences with claiming back from level health and their experience in general.

Adulting How does Halloween (trick or treating) work in 2026?

Recently moved into a new build estate after living abroad for close to a decade. There's a good few families with small kids around. Don't have kids ourselves and haven't been kids for over quarter of a century so would like to know what's expected nowadays?

Fully appreciate this is entirely optional but see it as a good chance to meet the neighbours etc.

Can we just open the door from 6-8 or similar? Do we need to decorate? Do you distribute something to each kid or let them pick 1-2 bits from a bowl? How much stuff should we buy in?

We got some mini bags of Maltesers, Squashies, Swizzels in but looking at it now it's hard to gauge how long it will last (4-5 variety bags). Any advice welcome!

Emigration (from Ireland) Anyone else devastated by the state of things?

I was born abroad, but I have an Irish parent and came to live here since I was young. I’m an Irish citizen. Let me start by saying I loved my childhood here. Honestly best place ever to grow up is rural Ireland in my opinion. Loved primary and secondary school.
Then I grew up, and it’s like the older I became the more I came to resent Ireland. I went to college, moved to a city that has become way rougher than it was when I came here at 18. Everything is just getting dirtier, more dangerous, and rent is absolutely insane. Poor garda presence and rampant drug use has made town feel unsafe. What is the point in paying exorbitant rent to live in a city is that horrible to be in? And the job market is so poor. I am currently re-training for another field. We’re constantly told what a wealthy nation we are yet everyone I know is struggling.

This hopelessness in regards to money and security has leaked into my resenting aspects of Irish culture I find toxic.
I hate how gossipy and fake so many Irish people are. I thought it was just a secondary school symptom, but no, that’s how many Irish adults operate. (I’m not saying all Irish people are gossips and that gossip is limited to Irish people, but I feel like we are very bad for it.)
And the drinking culture. I am so sick of drinking. I am so sick of people getting absolutely destroyed every night out. Why do we do this?
I think we’re a very lonely people as well. At least, I’m very lonely. The last few years I’ve realized how hard it is to make friends in this country as an adult - if you’re past secondary school and didn’t make friends in college, well, enjoy never being invited to anything. Why are we such an embarrassed people? Why can’t we just talk without double meanings and why can’t we say what we really mean?

Long story short, I looked at jobs abroad today and felt like crying, because the salaries were so much better. Broader range of jobs. Better rent to salary ratio. Better standard of living. Many people I grew up with have gone. It makes me want to cry. I think I’m going to join them. I don’t want to leave but I want to earn decent money. I want to be able to own a house someday. I just want to live well and I’m realizing I can’t really do that in the country i truly loved growing up in and envisioned spending my life here.

Nostalgia What would you say was the best era in Ireland?

For me, I’d say it was the mid-90s to the mid-2000s, when I was 12 to 22. I just remember everyone being so optimistic and excited about the future. People had jobs and disposable income, the music scene was unreal, and the nightclubs were hopping. People were starting to get a real sense of themselves, and the Catholic Church didn’t have as much of a hold on the place anymore.

I know most people are going to think the era they grew up in was the best, but I don’t know... Even though I was only 12 at the time, I genuinely feel like the mid-to-late 90s were the sweet spot, probably right up until the recession.

Although, my sister, who is years younger than me, was in college during the recession, and she said they were easily the best years of her life. I feel like our parents used to get excited for the future for their kids back then, wheras, anyone who has young kids now are anxious for their future.
