Welcome to this sub! After a long period of inactivity, I’ve became a mod of this subreddit and decided to revive it! I hope to foster a community where Avatar fans can discuss fanfiction. This can be a great place to discuss, share, analyze, and recommend fanfiction. Korra-era fanfiction is also welcome!
If you have any suggestions (user/post flairs, weekly discussion threads, etc.), feel free to message the mods!
I’ve added a few rules which can be found in the sidebar.
Enjoy!

Opening Sequence:
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Water Tribes attacked.
For generations, the Northern Water Tribe had been a peaceful nation. But in 63 BG, following the death of Chief Tiguaa, his son Skiri inherited the throne.
Skiri believed the world had grown weak. The Fire Nation possessed great military power. The Earth Kingdom commanded enormous territory. The Air Nomads enjoyed their freedom, untouched by the ambitions of kings.
He believed the Water Tribes deserved to rule them all.
In 54 BG, Skiri launched his war during a solar eclipse, when the firebenders were powerless. Fire Lord Sozin, who had never sought to conquer the other nations, found himself defending his homeland against an enemy he had never anticipated.
The war lasted decades.
In 12 BG, Avatar Roku was killed while attempting to stop the Water Tribe's conquest. The Fire Nation fell, and the Northern Water Tribe became the world's dominant military power.
That same year, a child named Aang was born at the Southern Air Temple.
By 12 AG, the Northern and Southern Water Tribes had united into one empire: the Water Nation.
In 40 AG, a waterbending master named Hama discovered a terrifying ability. She could manipulate the blood within another person's body. The Water Nation transformed this forbidden technique into an instrument of imperial control.
Every year, firebenders were captured and transported to frozen prisons in the far north.
And the Avatar, who had vanished in 0 AG, was nowhere to be found.
Until now.
Book One: Fire 🔥
Episode One: The boy in the Volcano 🌋
Fire Nation — 99 AG
The volcano had been silent for nearly a century.
Its enormous black slopes rose above the southern islands of the Fire Nation, overlooking villages that had once belonged to a proud and prosperous civilization.
Before the conquest, the Fire Nation had been renowned for its engineering, industry, and mastery of firebending.
Now its cities were occupied by Water Nation soldiers.
Firebending was forbidden without imperial permission. The royal palace had been converted into a military headquarters. The portraits of former Fire Lords had been removed from its walls.
And in the mountains, entire communities lived in fear of the next imperial collection.
Every winter, Water Nation ships arrived.
Every winter, firebenders disappeared.
Prince Zuko had spent much of his childhood watching it happen.
He was sixteen years old, a descendant of Fire Lord Sozin, and heir to a royal dynasty that no longer possessed a kingdom.
His younger sister, Azula, was fourteen.
Unlike their counterparts in another history, neither had grown up surrounded by imperial luxury.
They knew hunger, occupation, and the constant danger of being discovered.
And both were extraordinarily gifted firebenders.
The Mountain Road
"You're going the wrong way."
Zuko stopped walking.
Behind him, Azula stood with her arms crossed, staring at the mountain trail.
"We've been following this road for three hours," she continued. "The village is east. You're taking us north."
"I'm following the old maps."
"The maps are a hundred years old."
"That doesn't mean they're wrong."
Azula rolled her eyes.
"No. It just means the roads have been destroyed, the bridges have collapsed, and the Water Nation has spent ninety years rebuilding everything."
Zuko ignored her.
Their mission was simple.
A resistance contact had told them that an abandoned Fire Nation military supply station existed somewhere beneath the volcano. The station supposedly contained weapons, armor, and records from the final years of Fire Lord Sozin's reign.
The Fire Nation resistance desperately needed those supplies.
But Azula had another reason for coming.
She wanted to find something their father had spoken about only in whispers.
The last records of Avatar Roku.
"Do you actually believe the Avatar is still alive?" she asked.
Zuko looked toward the volcano.
"Nobody ever found his successor."
"That doesn't mean anything."
"It means something."
Azula frowned.
"Roku died over a hundred years ago. The next Avatar should have been an airbender."
"He was."
"Then where is he?"
Zuko had no answer.
The last known Avatar had disappeared in the year 0 AG, shortly before the Water Nation began its final campaigns against the remaining independent territories.
The Air Nomads claimed the boy had fled the Southern Air Temple.
The Water Nation claimed he had died.
Neither story had ever been proven.
Suddenly, the ground trembled.
Azula looked down.
"Zuko."
Another tremor.
A deep rumbling sound echoed beneath their feet.
The volcano was waking.
The first explosion came from the eastern ridge.
A column of ash erupted into the sky.
Zuko grabbed Azula's arm.
"RUN!"
They sprinted across the rocky slope as burning fragments rained around them.
A second explosion shattered a nearby cliff.
Azula raised both hands and released a concentrated blast of blue fire, destroying the falling rocks before they could strike.
"You're welcome!" she shouted.
"Keep moving!"
But as they approached a narrow passage, Zuko noticed something strange.
A section of the mountainside was glowing.
Not with lava.
With light.
A pale blue-white radiance shone through cracks in the black volcanic rock.
Azula stopped.
"What is that?"
Zuko approached cautiously.
The light pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Then the stone began to fracture.
"Get back!" Azula warned.
A massive explosion of air burst outward.
Both siblings were thrown backward.
The mountainside split open, revealing a hollow chamber surrounded by layers of rock that appeared to have been bent into place deliberately.
At its center floated a sphere of compressed air.
Inside was a boy.
He wore orange and yellow Air Nomad robes.
Blue arrow tattoos covered his head and arms.
His eyes were closed.
And he appeared to be twelve years old.
Azula slowly stood.
"Zuko..."
The sphere began to dissolve.
The boy fell.
Zuko caught him before he struck the ground.
For several seconds, neither sibling spoke.
Then the boy opened his eyes.
"Monk Gyatso?"
Zuko stared at him.
The boy looked around, confused.
"Where am I?"
Azula stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The boy blinked.
"My name's Aang."
Zuko felt his stomach tighten.
Azula noticed his expression.
"What?"
Zuko looked at the arrow tattoos.
Then at the shattered chamber.
Then back at the boy.
"You're an airbender."
Aang smiled weakly.
"Yeah. Is that bad?"
Zuko swallowed.
"How long have you been in there?"
Aang frowned.
"I don't know. A few minutes?"
Azula glanced at the ancient volcanic stone surrounding them.
"That's impossible."
Aang looked toward the distant sky.
"Wait. What year is it?"
Zuko hesitated.
"99 AG."
Aang's smile disappeared.
"What?"
"It's the year 99 AG."
Aang stared at him.
"No. That's not right."
He stepped away from Zuko.
"It's supposed to be the year 0 AG."
Neither sibling moved.
Aang looked at his hands.
Then at the volcano.
Then at the two strangers standing before him.
"I've been gone..."
His voice broke.
"For ninety-nine years?"

Hi everyone! Chapter Five of The Fire Lord Who Never Was: The Legend of Avatar Taoreta is now available! Our visit to Keiraku continues with pottery, some welcome laughter, and a conversation Taoreta has been waiting to have—though she may not enjoy every part of the answer.
Here’s the chapter summary:
At Chiyo’s workshop, Taoreta trades her ledgers for a lump of clay and discovers that making a respectable bowl requires more than careful attention. Between shared laughter, a small gift for Aolin, and an unexpectedly easy conversation with Amaya, the morning offers pleasures she had scarcely thought to make room for. Luncheon brings good food and questions about what the Crown’s assistance will leave behind. But when Taoreta asks whether Seijun’s doubts about her succession remain, his answer reaches beyond anything a successful relief mission can settle.
She has begun to earn his confidence...but the fears surrounding her future may be harder to reshape.
Read it on AO3: The Fire Lord Who Never Was
You should also be getting a teaser scene from the next chapter in a couple of days! You see, we are approaching my favorite chapter from Story Arc One, The Measure of an Heir, so I’m really looking forward to sharing this next stretch with you.
If you give it a read, I’d love to hear what you think. Comments and feedback are always welcome, and thank you to everyone who has been following Taoreta’s story so far!

Enjoy!

Hi!
I'm looking for someone who might be keen to do some beta reading for my fic! I would be very interested, as well, if you have your own fic and want to do a trade off on beta reading
My fic is at 100,000 words, and is quickly turning into an epic. It's a time travel story centering on the question of 'What if season 1 Korra woke up in the iceberg instead of Aang?' Tone is generally light hearted, but it has had its darker moments. Check out the link below if you're interested!
I've been doing this fanfic writing thing for the past year or so now. I'm new to the writing scene, but am trying to do more research, active reading, etc to get better. I'm hoping a bit of collaboration will go a long way towards that goal.
Shoot me a message if you're keen and we'll see what we can set up 😊

Hi! First post here. I've had this idea since 2013 lol But now the first 2 chapters+prologue are out on AO3~
link: Avatar Aftertime
Three thousand years after the events of The Legend of Korra, the dark spirit Vaatu has grown stronger, enough to restrict the Avatar Spirit. Avatar Suyoon is nowhere to be found, and a historic ceasefire she brokered hangs by a thread as tensions between nations rise. And in the streets of Ba Sing Se, a ruthless vigilante known as the Ghost has become a legend among the city’s criminals.
Hope you enjoy!

I'm writing a fic where Gaara from Naruto ends up in the ATLA world. I'm trying to keep the rules of each world in tact; meaning Gaara can't do any Shinobi type things that defy the laws of ATLA physics. Since Chakra works completely differently in each world, he is going to have to learn how to bend from scratch.
My question:
In Naruto, people have multiple Chakra natures (Gaara has earth and wind). Would it make sense for Gaara to only be an earth bender because that is his strongest nature? Or would he potentially be able to bend earth and air because people from his world are capable of holding multiple?
Any other weird crossover dynamics should I consider?
Link if anyone wants to read what I have so far (would love any other thoughts as well).

Im rewatching atla, and I got to ep 13 where Zuko comes to save Aang from General Zhao, and I remembered a video saying how much Zuko and Aang are like yin and yang and couldnt help but want to read a fic where Aang and Zuko are friends/allies from an earlier point.
Its a drastic au change for sure, but I do think it’s interesting. Are there any good recs that anyone has? Is there maybe a specific tag for this? I rarely ever read atla fanfiction
Edit: preferably no zutara or zukka, mostly just how the canon pairings are bc I like those the most

not to hate on the show or anything but i am rewatching the show and i wanna develop my writting skills by doing this ,so here i go:
starting from episode three , the two first episodes are cool , the only changes are the republic city having many posters of asami as she became the head of her father company at such young age ,calling her youngest brilliant mind of all time ,as for episode three ,the change start from the search for bolin ,where mako ask this kid for info ,korra would ask " who were these kids anyway ?"mako answer " some kids we help from time to time ,it is hard to survive when you are a non bender in this city", the chace scene is the same ,the other change is when they wait for that guy who have the invite ,the change here is when mako talk about his parents ,instead ,his parent are offed by a non bender ," non bender ?,but !" said korra surprised ," but how?" said mako" not everybody is cut up to be a fighter , they were your average nice people who happen to be benders , normal weak people ,but to survive in this city...you cannot be weak, you ever turn into an equalist to become stronger to survive and protect your loved ones ,or maybe become a probender to try and become a bit stronger ,yet i still lost to these chi blocker ,maybe i still have long way to go " korra put her hands on his shoulder and try to comfort him" you are strong mako " mako replied" thanks but when the avatar says this it feel unearned " korra had a smirk and said" hey! even i not strong enough to ait bend or direct lighting or re direct it " mako asked back" lighting ?" korra stood up " yeah lighting is rare and redirect it is more rare ,an old man once told me that ,it is like fire bending but in water bending style, here i will show you " she said as she took his hand and forced him to stand up and showed him something about this technique ,might come in handy ,next change is ,a scene before entering amon revelation , " hold on , you are more recognizable than me , here " he gave her his scarf ," you sure ? you always wear this thing , look important to you " korra said concerned ," if it is , do not miss ,avatar " he said smiling .( note , here lighting is not commen )

I would also like the rest of the Gaang involved along with the roommates thing going on for several years. And I'd like them to live in California. I'd like a realistic depiction of The Golden State bc it's more than just beaches. We have parts that literally snow for heaven's sake!

here’s the fic (: https://archiveofourown.org/works/93859396/chapters/250479781
Originally started as just a continuation of what I think would happen after the war and some politics. Some zutara, and an exploration of Zuko and Azula as siblings beings raised in the royal family and being abused. Azula’s psychosis and Zuko trying to handle his new responsibilities and rebuilding the fire nation (except something kind of gets in the way.)
But as I started drafting it, it kept getting longer and longer and I realised that it’s turning more into a political thriller.
I’d love any advice, thoughts, opinions, or feedback on this. I never wrote a fic like this before or a long fic in a verrrryyyy long time. Or if anyone is looking for a fic similar to what I wrote maybe this would be of interest to you.

Is there a fic where the air nomads or a group or subset of them fight back during the genocide and escape/survive and fight against the fire nation in later wars till aang showed up again?

Hello again, everyone! The Guiding Moonlight has finally reached Keiraku Island, and Taoreta’s first royal relief expedition is about to begin in earnest. I’m excited to share Chapter Three: The Work of Ruling, continuing Story Arc One: The Measure of an Heir in Book One: Dreams! If you missed my earlier posts and want to get more explanations about it, here is the link to my first post about it. But for my other readers, here is the summary for the chapter itself:
Keiraku comes into view in green terraces and blackened fields, its harbor already busy with the work of recovery. Taoreta has brought food, medicine, and carefully prepared plans, but Clan Lord Seijun has concerns that no cargo manifest can answer. Between formal welcomes, displaced families, and the first decisions of her commission, she begins discovering how much a generous gesture can imply...and how easily the Crown’s assistance might complicate the recovery it is meant to support. Her father has trusted her to act in his name. Now the Crown Princess must decide when to give an order, when to ask another question, and whose judgment deserves to be heard.
Read Chapter Three on AO3 here!
If you give it a read, I’d love to hear what you think! Comments and feedback are very welcome, either here or on AO3. Thanks to everyone who has been following along so far and giving my take on the story for the currently unnamed female Fire Avatar before Szeto a chance!
And as promised in my earlier posts, I’m including a brief sneak peek from the chapter in this announcement. Here it goes:
---
Taoreta looked again toward the damaged mountain.
“Do we have anyone with the road crews who can help with the heavier rockfalls?” she asked. “Not simply laborers. Someone who can tell whether moving one boulder is likely to bring half the slope down after it.”
“As a matter of fact, we do,” Jensu replied cheerfully.
Taoreta glanced at him, not really expecting such a quick and confident response. “Do we really?”
“I hired an earthbender.”
That earned him her full attention. “You found an earthbender willing to travel with a Fire Nation royal relief expedition on less than a few weeks’ notice?” she asked with an impressed tilt of her head.
“One of the few currently living in the capital,” Jensu said, with the particular satisfaction of a man who had anticipated a problem before anybody else had realized it existed. “He has taken occasional contracts involving foundations, retaining walls, collapsed masonry and excavation. I had his name in the Ministry’s specialist records.”
“Of course you did.”
“I will consider that praise,” Jensu responded as he elected to ignore her teasing tone. “Regardless, he agreed remarkably quickly once I told him who was leading the expedition,” Jensu added. “Before I had finished explaining the fee, in fact.”
Taoreta supposed some people liked an interesting contract and the opportunity to gain further connections in case they impressed enough to gain some royal patronage. “Interesting. Where is this mysterious earthbender then?” she asked with a chuckle.
“His name is Tieguai,” Jensu added helpfully as he gestured toward the cargo area.
Taoreta followed the motion and found an elderly Earth Kingdom man standing near a stack of tools while two Keiraku workers argued over where several iron pry bars were supposed to go. He wore plain traveling clothes in faded earth-green tones and possessed the unremarkable posture of someone who had perfected the art of being overlooked. Nothing about him suggested to her eyes that he considered himself particularly important.
At that exact moment, one of the workers nearly dropped a crate. And Tieguai caught its edge with one hand before it struck the ground, steadied it, and returned to whatever conversation he had been having without any apparent effort.
Taoreta raised an eyebrow at that. “How old is he?”
Jensu considered the question. “You know, I have suddenly realized that I have never received a consistent answer.”
“That sounds promising,” Taoreta said sarcastically.
“He is very good at his work, for what it is worth.”
“Alright, that sounds more useful.”
As though sensing that he was being discussed, the old man looked across the harbor toward them. Only briefly. His gaze passed over Jensu, settled upon Taoreta for perhaps a heartbeat longer than courtesy required, and then moved away again as he bent to examine a fractured paving stone beside the quay.
Taoreta just shrugged and returned her attention to her hand-picked minister.
“Make sure the road officials know they have access to him,” she said. “If they think earthbending can make a damaged slope safe, let him help. If they think it cannot, he listens to them.”
Jensu nodded. “Already discussed.”
---
Well, I hope you enjoyed that! And if you are curious for more, such as, I don't know, what exactly Lao Ge was doing here in his older Tieguai the Immortal persona, then by all means, you can start by checking the full chapter and the last few before it, if you hadn't already, in the link above. Believe me, I am really, really excited to share my plans for this one after developing the pre-production section of this fic involving Tieguai/Laoe Ge for so long...among other things.
Anyway, happy reading to you all. Stay tuned for more updates to come soon, and until next time.

I had this fanfic idea between the Fire Hazard Siblings (Azula + Zuko), they're my fav characters in the entire series. However, I'm still trying to figure out their sibling relationship dynamics.
Especially since I've only watched ATLA once and I'm still in the middle of my rewatch, I can't really remember the details, and the details are always the most important when it comes to fanfics. It's like, canon gives you crumbs, and with crumbs us fanfic authors have to bake a whole cake. (I found that quote on tiktok somewhere.)
Anyway, back to my point-- How much do you think they hated eachother at the start? Who hated eachother more? Why did they hate eachother? I want stuff for BOTH Zuko and Azula. Because Zuko also heavily disliked Azula. I would argue that Azula actually cared for Zuko more before his redemption, and before her breakdown. (But I also don't like how people say that Zuko hated Azula COMPLETELY. Sorry, I'm starting to ramble. I'm trying to say is that I won't accept any slander for both of them and they both cared for eachother even if just a tiny bit, and I want to expand on that in my fic).
What will it take for them to start to start to care for eachother again? Get into the details. I was also wondering if you guys had any headcanons for them that I should add in my fic.
Heres one that I really like as an example: Azula being super hungry all the time; comes from the headcanon that firebenders need fuel, so they eat a lot. Azula must need a lot of fuel for her strong flames. Zuko always used to sneak and give her some food from his own plate. Azula would try and be woman-like and dainty at the dinner table. In the safety of her room, she would completely stuff her mouth.
And when it comes to dynamics, I like Azula being a ragebaiter and Zuko being easily ragebaited. That's not even a headcanon, it's basically canon.
A cute thing I want to add in my fic is Azula initally thinking “Zuko is a fool” in dislike and hatred, and eventually starts to think it but fondly.
Of course, most of it is probably going to be sibling chaotic shenanigans, their rivalry, Azula's redemption. There will only be a bit of soft moments together-- making it more impactful that way. I also love them being protective for one another by the end.
(I don't like the comics btw and I haven't finished reading them at all, Ik their dynamic is expanded on there but I just can't with how Zuko treated his family)
if you want to know the summary of my fic:
As Zuko gets struck by Azula’s lightning in the final Agni Kai, it causes a rift in the spirit world and they are both transported, isolated and stuck with each other until they find a way out.
Thank goodness you can’t bend in the spirit world— Zuko would have been freshly sizzled fire flakes by now.
Any thoughts???
Thoughts about the fire siblings?? character studies??? Even any fic recs????
Thank you sm!!

War: over
Kataang Is locked in immediately. Everyone's an adult.
Aluza has been through some therapy. Lat r, when zuko and katara discussing the Agni Kai with some scholars. (The whole securing the legitimacy of the throne situation has already been dealt with. This is more for the record)
Here's the problem, as legally recognized under fire Nation
"A royal Agni Kai is an event witnessed by not just the people in attendance but the gods. Specifically the fire. God Agni. And whatever happens the battle is the god's will. "
For one Royal members, such as a firelord proclaiming, a royal Agni Kai would essentially be a very easy chance of being overthrown.
Which is why in standard practice these battles are traditionally duels between two individuals. It's not impossible to have a secondary for either party. But traditionally, those are either a successor or a bodyguards
By legal right, Katara of the Southern water tribe could have became the leader of the fire Nation because she was the one to ultimately finish the duel.
Yes Katara could have became a fire lady by right
of conquest. Because this
was a royal Agni Kai. And because fire lady Azula was arrogant enough to allow katara into the duel. And allow it to be a two-on-one And sure she gave up her chance at being Firelord to zuko.
That doesn't stop that. She has a potential claim to the throne.
Another thing is another possibility because there was a male and female claimant, There was a possibility of zuko marrying his sister for political power. (This is from the age when when firelords were expected to ride dragons)
But no, he's not into that. However, interestingly. Katara could also be The one to claim azula as the loser of the duel .. Because Royal Agni Kai is breached into the realm of politics, into the realm of the Divine Which is why they're so rare.
One scribe points out.
This actually might tie a fevw loose ends. And preventing her from even be able to attempta claim on the throne..
Another points out.
'She is the daughter of the chief of the Southern water, tribe and War hero. "
However, the third objects
but lady katara is marrying the avatar."
"And? He's the Avatar! This isn't an unprecedented, kyoshi had two lovers that we know of"
*And this could be seen as reparations to the last Airbender for the crimes of the fire Nation against the air nomads."
But wait wouldn't The princess be only the sister wife to the Avatar, as she would be going to be married to his wife and not himself."
"They're the Avatar last of the airbenders a little bit of polygamy and rule bending isn't out of the equation for someone as a tune to the spirit world as they are."
From there the debate spiraled. (This was neither kataang or zukos or azulas plan)
------
When questioning why ozai and Avatar aang weren't discussed.
Simply put Avatar aang never actually challenged Agni Kai for the throne, he challenged Lord ozai as a form of ending the war And seeing as he quasi-elevaded himself to "Phoenix King" he wasn't actually acting as firelord.
Thus even if they did challenge him for the throne he wouldn't have any ability to back up the throne. Still this ends with katara, aang and azula together going on adventures, ty lee, didn't want to be left behind. If azula was stuck here then ty lee would follow Technically this is two couples with a marriage chain keeping them a person from each couple locked in But it did protect all members involved
Still though the gossip mongrels love this to this day it would be dubbed the "air Nation reconstruction harem" There was many, many people who volunteered could simply be babysitter is and training The new crop of children.

Summary:
It came to her, suddenly, that the Marquis, while dying honorably, must have been very young. The moonlight reached into the room, and she stared up to meet its totality. The full moon was a lovely sight, now it pulled at the thread of her heart and she felt an inextricable sense of longing.
“However, our father used to tell stories of the Avatar.”
To Xiao Ning, this opportunity must have been irresistible, as she copied an earthbending, firebending, airbending, and waterbending stance. Planting her feet into the bed, and bringing her arms above her head to move her rock. She then took those hands and brought them down, and let one hand punch out to pretend to be a firebender. She spun around, to replicate the circular nature of the basic forms for airbending. Taking snow from outside the lattice window, it became a true liquid in her hands and it stayed that way for only seconds before a loud sound as it became a puddle on the floor. This amazed Changyu, who knew Ning paid attention to their mothers teachings on bending philosophy and diligently watched the other benders. Having never seen firebenders or airbenders though, her stances were less convincing. It was adorable.

Does anyone have any recommendation for a fanfic where Yue is the avatar/based on the theory that Yue was supposed to be the avatar after Aang and that’s why she was born without a soul.
Any suggestions would be great thank you!

It's a LOK rewrite that mostly sticks to canon apart from a few tweaks (No love triangle, Asami and Opal get together instead), although Book 4 will be more AU-ey (Currently in Book 3). Just more of the silliness that we got from their date.
I'll keep an open mind about the show, and I'd love to see Bolin be some sort of crazy hermit grandpa to the twins. Might write something for that too depending on what I see from it.
