Subreddit Meta Comment Cooperative - October 28

Welcome to the Comment Cooperative!

This thread is for sharing positive feedback and reviews with your fellow fanfictioneers!

No concrit, no nitpicking, no grammar checks, no "I don't like this part because..." NOPE! None of that, nada, zero, zilch. We've got a weekly thread on Saturdays for constructive criticism if that's your preferred style of feedback.

Key Rules for Participation:

  • If you're posting in this thread you must leave a review for someone else. This is a community based thread, and therefore needs the community to be involved so that it is fair for everyone.
  • 30+ words when leaving reviews, please. This is to promote fair play and level the field. If you want to ramble on from there, go right ahead!
  • Quoting parts of the fic does not count toward your review word count.
  • It is highly encouraged to review in this thread and also copy/paste it to the actual fic or chapter they've linked.
  • If you see something that doesn't have a review yet, please try to give it a read to spread the love around.
  • If you have the time, reviewing more than one fic would be a thoughtful thing to do.
  • If you just want to hang out and review fics without putting in your own, you're more than welcome to!

Posting Fics for Review:

  • Select a passage from a fic you want a comment/review on. There is a hard limit of 600 words.
  • Please use wordcounter.net to check the length of your snippets. Going forward, snippets over 600 words in wordcounter.net will be removed. This is to ensure a consistent standard. Users are responsible for making sure their comments abide by the rules.
  • Top level comments should be fic snippets.
  • First line should be Fandom | Title | Rating | Link - AO3, FFN, etc.
  • Copy and paste your fic tidbit directly to the thread unless it contains Mature or Explicit content.
  • If the fic contains Mature or Explicit content (explicit sexual situations, extreme depictions of violence, or underage content), please provide a link to these fics with appropriate tags and warnings.
  • If your fic contains this content but the specific scene you've chosen to post does not, please warn those who might go link-clicking about the content in the rest of the fic.
  • If you, for whatever reason, would not like the review also put on your actual fic, please say so.
  • Reminder: If you contribute a fic, you must leave a review for someone else!

Formatting example:

Fandom | Title | Rating | Link to offsite

(new line, double enter) Any applicable warnings

(new line, double enter) Your fic text.

Tips and tricks for leaving a positive review:

  • When a line catches your eye, quote it and say what you liked about it.
  • If there's an overarching theme or technicality the author did well, point it out.
  • You may have no clue about the fandom, but did you get a good sense of a character, or the scenery, or the plot, the action, the feeling of the scene, the interactions, the dialogue? I'm sure they'd like to know!

Discussion Must unhinged thing you did for research?

• Upvotes

I consider to not just buy and read one bible, but two. Cuz the fic I write is set in an era were the specific chuch the MC is in, transitioned between bibles.

Is this even unhinged, to buy two bibles as an atheist to research for fanfiction?

What about you? Any overkil reseach you did?

(Technically they are in the public domain, I could just get the PDF's, but I prefer physical books to mark stuff to find stuff easier. A colorful sticky note is easier for me to find than a specific page in a 800+ page book, especially when I don't exactly know what I am searching for.)

Writing Questions Any Navajo writers here?

I'm writing a Fallout 4 fic where Nate and his side of the family are Navajo, I'm not sure how to include Navajo culture in his character without it sounding like a wiki page.

Activities and Events Word Excerpt Game: Anything Goes Edition 🧠

Lets play an excerpt game!

- To play this game, post a top level comment with a word of your choosing. Yes, any word you'd like; fandom related, common, funny, anything!

(That being said, try not to pick anything too crazy; we want people to be able to find an excerpt that fits, after all.)

You can post multiple prompts, but make sure to put them in separate comments.

- After you've done that, reply to others' top comments with an excerpt of yours that includes the word that's chosen.

- Try to keep the word count under 500 words!

- Make sure to follow the sub's rules! Tag triggering topics and do not use plaintext for your NSFW excerpts, and anything that falls under Rule 12.

- Please try to at least respond to a few of the excerpts you get! Even a short "This was fun!" or "I really liked *detail*" goes a long way in making your fellow writers feel seen. ❤️

Discussion Reading fanfic in a new fandom is like a breath of fresh air

• Upvotes

I started reading Harry Potter fanfiction about 16 years ago (yes, I'm old). I have read what feels like every classic in the fandom and then some. I have started reading Twilight fanfiction and it is such a breath of fresh air. New tropes, new pairings, new writers. Hopefully I won't spend the next 16 years in only one fandom and will explore more haha

Writing Questions How do you know when your work is "ready to post"?

• Upvotes

I'm new to writing fanfiction. After having read my fair share of it, and having some prior experience writing original fiction for my own enjoyment, I've recently gotten into a new fandom which has inspired me enough to want to write and share my own work -- yay!

I have like five seperate oneshots in various stages of development, and I've realised I have a problem: I have literally no idea how to know when the fic is "done". Not in terms of the storyline -- I planned the plots ahead of time, and for a couple of them I've basically written the entire story and there's nothing else I can really add, content-wise. I just feel the need to keep rewriting and editing it literally for weeks. I've always written for myself with no intention of sharing my work with others, so I guess it's just kind of nerve-wracking knowing that other people will (potentially) read whatever I end up with, so I keep putting off declaring a work "finished".

Should I just keep tinkering with it until I finally feel satisfied? Or is that a trap that means I will never finish anything ever?

Does anyone else struggle with this? When did you know that your work was ready for posting?

It's worth mentioning that I'm quite the overthinker (if you hadn't already gathered that from the rest of the post, lol).

Activities and Events Alphabet Excerpt Challenge: B Is For...

Welcome back to the Alphabet Excerpt Challenge! As a reminder, our challenges are every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm London time.

If you've missed the previous challenges, you're welcome to go back and participate in them. You can find them here. And remember to check out the Activities and Events flair to play along with other fun games.

Here's a quick recap of the rules for our game:

  1. Post a top level comment with a word starting with the letter B. You can suggest more than one, but please put them in separate comments.
  2. Reply to suggestions with an excerpt containing that word. Short and sweet is best, but use your judgement. Excerpts can be from published or unpublished works, or even something you wrote for the prompt.
  3. All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning. Mods may remove excerpts that break these rules.
  4. Respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, at a minimum, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!
  5. Upvote other excerpts you enjoy, and leave a friendly comment. Again, everyone likes nice comments!
  6. Most important: have fun!

Writing Questions Which grammatical tense do you guys prefer ?

Hi !! I’m currently writing my second fic and my first one was a one shot in the present tense. Now I’m reaaally indecisive about which tense to use ! Do you prefer reading a fic in the past or present tense and why ? To you personally, what’s the difference ? I started writing my fic in the present tense because it felt the most natural to me (like for my 1st, I didn’t even think about it). But then I was reading a fic and I realized that it was in the past tense and I was like ohh I also like it ! Then I went back to my bookmarks and realized that i actually read many fics in the past tense but i never payed attention🤣
Thanks in advance everyone !!

Discussion Something I don't understand about my own fics

Something I really don't understand is that while I expressly write self indulgent fics for myself, at the same time, basically every fic of mine consists of things that I typically avoid while reading others' fics ??? I don't understand how my fics are simultaneously my exact taste while also being not my taste at all. I am the change I want to see in the fandom. Yet also not.

Ex. My personal standards for my own fics is that there HAS to be some illustration or it will feel incomplete. Yet I usually don't like art in fics at all. Another is that I basically only write really niche AUs, yet I almost always prefer to read canon based fics > AUs, and honestly often avoid AUs. (It reminds me of how a friend assumed I must LOVE historical AUs, cause I had a long running one myself, but I told them, no I actually avoid those completely LOL.)

Does anyone else deal with this or am I just weird????? I'm honestly just very grateful though that there are still people who do like my fics regardless of my own odd preferences 😭

Discussion So strange visiting fandom spaces from 10 years ago

So, I recently decided to visit the fandom I got into like 10 years ago. Since I Ao3 wasn’t that big of a deal back then, in order to read some fics for this fandom, I dusted off my ancient Wattpad account and went searching through my fic history and scouring the app for some new ones.

And man, it’s so strange to see how fans weren’t afraid to be genuinely weird back then. I saw teenage writers casually shipping themselves with adult characters, introducing their OCs in between the one shot chapters, doing challenges, once again, in the middle of the stories, and so on and so forth.

Nowadays, normie fandom posers would 1) ridicule those writers to hell and back on social media and 2) scream and virtue signal about “pedophilia” etc.

While fandom culture as a whole getting bigger did attract more attention to many wonderful and fun stories written by fans, it’s a shame that because of stan twitter rejects, engagement farmers and other kinds of posers hopping on a bandwagon, this sort of genuine, unapologetic and fun cringeness is almost extinct in the modern fandom as a whole.

Discussion How to get your New Document on FFN, It's Really Annoying

I have seen people say on the subreddit that you can get new documents to upload to FFN via the mobile app, and you can; it's just really annoying.

I logged into the mobile app and made a new document with the title of my fic and the chapter number. I then added it to the mobile app, but instead of writing anything in it, I just wrote "Test" so there would be a word in it. I was able to save a new document, and it did show up when I went to look at it in the web browser. So yes, it does work, but I wouldn't recommend writing inside the mobile app. Just put "Test" and then paste your writing on FFN under the new document works. I hope they fix it so the web browser will let you upload text. While the workaround still works on mobile, I wish they would fix the site, but it's still broken when you look at the stats page.

Discussion Looking for a discord group to talk about fanfiction/writing fanfics

Just like it says in the title. I'd prefer if it was an adult-only space, but beggars can't be choosers. I'm planning on undertaking a huge writing project this november and wanted to find a space for fanfic talk specifically.

Discussion How do you decide whether to make something a multi-chap work or a series?

I'm currently working on a fic and having a hard time deciding whether to post it (to ao3) as a multi-chap, a series, or some combination of the two.

Some considerations:

  • The fic follows two characters over a span of about 35 years
  • Each chapter is more like a vignette in the sense that in most cases you could read a chapter without reading the one before it and not be too lost or confused
  • The ratings for each chapter will vary widely, from G up to E
  • The main community hub (a discord server) for the fandom is all-ages, there is no linking to explicit content allowed

This sounds like an obvious candidate for a series, right? Especially in terms of sharing my work with the community. But in my head, this is one complete work/story, not a series of smaller stories connected together. The fandom is tiny (fewer than 100 fics on ao3, and most aren't in English), so there aren't exactly community norms I can use as a guide here.

One thought I had was to do a series of multi-chap works, where each work is consecutive chapters with approximately the same rating. This isn't perfect, because I expect the rating sequence to go something like, for example, G, G, T, M, G, M, E, E, G, G, T, T, T, M, G but it would allow me to advertise share the all-ages chapters in the community while still maintaining some sense of cohesion of the work. It would also make it easy for people who are just here for the smut and don't care about character development (or vice versa) to find the parts they're interested in.

What would you do in this situation?

If you have any general thoughts on deciding between making something a multi-chap or series that aren't relevant to my specific situation, feel free to share those too! I'm interested in how others approach these decisions.

Lost Fic Omega Rick Grimes/Alpha Daryl Dixon (TWD)

Y’all PLEASE help put my friend and I out of our misery bc we’re starting to think it doesn’t exist 😩 We were doing a rewatch of TWD and came across the alpha/omega group, which sparked this discussion for the millionth time now.

Plot:
A while back there was this fanfic with omega Rick grimes and both Merle and Daryl were alphas. My best friend says it started with them driving to the hospital for supplies only to find Rick there, who happens to be an omega. I remember Merle actually being a decent guy there and they were quite physically affectionate with Rick. I think they took Rick back to camp where he realized Lori and Shane are having an affair, and we’te pretty sure there was Lori bashing. She swears there was a scene with Rick and Daryl in a tent where he’s in heat, and Merle was guarding them from the rest of the group? Or something like that? Pretty sure Glenn was a beta but had an omega family member and so understood Rick better than the rest.

I believe it was a decently short fanfic but she’s been going out of her mind trying to find it! I could’ve sworn it was on AO3 originally.

Any help is appreciated! Feel free to drop some recs of anything similar as well!

Recs Wanted Kirk/Spock fics

Haven't read for them before, thinking about jumping aboard the ship if anyone has any recommendations. I've read gen fics stemming from the 2009 Alternate series/timeline so mostly I'm looking for stuff based off that, but I'll read stuff from anywhere else as long as I don't need a deeper understanding of the universe or characters than what those movies gave us.

(Doesn't have to be canon complaint or anything, I'm down for AU's, I just haven't seen more than those movies and a handful of episodes from voyager/next gen)

Please no MCD, unhappy/ambiguous endings or anything more than passing mentions of recreational drug use.

Activities and Events Excerpt Game - Song Lyrics

Let’s do one of these today

As always, here are the rules:

  1. Leave a song lyric in a top level comment. Let’s keep the lyrics to 1 - 4 lines or one verse if the song has shorter verses. To not bury other prompts, let’s limit it to 1 - 3 consecutive prompts in a row.

  2. Reply to prompts if you have an extract that you feel matches the meaning of the lyric, has the same vibe, your extract contains words from the lyric in it or the phrase itself is used in the extract.

  3. Upvote the ones you like and try to at least comment on one answer to your prompt

  4. Be mindful of the sub’s NSFW rule

  5. Have fun :)

Discussion Tell me your craziest AU

Mine are a how to train your dragon Antarctica AU, the riders are Modern day researchers living on a base in Antarctica with their pets. Toothless is a Norwegian forest cat with his own ski goggles.

Ttte riders AU, the engines are now humans with horses. There’s currently an ongoing lawsuit against two canon characters and both decided to represent themselves. It’s so derived that the only thing in common with the source material is story beats, character names, and personality. But at least everyone is in character.

Plus it gives me an excuse to infodump about horses.

Discussion Should I include Whump as a tag?

I recently learned about whump, and I'm not sure I entirely understand it yet. But it sounds like maybe I could add it as a tag to a certain fic of mine (I'm always on the lookout for new tags to add to my fics). From what I found, it's when a character is put through a lot of suffering. Related tags being Angst and Hurt/Comfort or even Hurt/No Comfort. But at what point does it turn into Whump?

Here are the things the character will go through...

The mental trauma of being ripped away from her home and everything she knew.

Being poisoned and almost dying.

Being kidnapped and beaten, receiving broken bones in the process.

The mental anguish of believing she is the reason someone close to her died.

Watching an innocent man die.

An attempted kidnapping that leads to her having suicidal thoughts.

Another kidnapping that is successful, and results in SA.

She gets away from her captors and throws herself off of a cliff to do so, choosing death rather than what they would do to her.

Injuries resulting from falling into a river from so high up.

So, does this fit the Whump tag? Or is it too much, too little, or not the right type of thing altogether? There are other things, but these I would say are the biggest. Curious about your thoughts, thank you!

(yeah, there are several kidnapping ploys... it's something I enjoy writing and I swear it makes sense with the right context for it to happen 3 times)
